Advent Day 19
βIt is illogical for us to be obtaining a Christmas tree when we do not normally celebrate Christmas,β Spock’s father told his wife, Amanda, Spockβs mother, as they arrived at the tree lot to do just that.
Spockβs father, Sarek, a full Vulcan celebrated nothing. Spockβs mother had been born and raised Jewish but as far as Spock could tell, she likewise celebrated nothing.
Yet here they were.
βSusan converted to her husband, Tomβs religion and they do celebrated Christmas,β Mother said as they passed through the open gate.
Susan was Motherβs sister and Spockβs aunt. They were on Earth at present in San Francisco near the Federation Head Quarters. Aunt Susan and Uncle Tom lived there and at present Spock and his parents were staying with them.
βI told Susan we would get the tree for them,β Mother continued.
Spock was aware that his father knew all this and yet Sarek chose to complain anyway, which Spock found most illogical. A part of marriage, his mother would have told him had he asked.
Spock had decided some time ago he had no intention of ever being married.
βSpock, why donβt you look around and see if you can find a tree? As soon as you find one you like, come and get us and weβll take it home.β
βI can choose the tree?β Spock decided to clarify the point.
βYes.β Mother smiled. βThereβs a stand over there selling hot cocoa. Iβm going to make your father buy me one.β
Spock nodded. βVery well.β
Spock walked away from his parents and down the next aisle. He quickly noticed two Human boys on the same aisle. One was about his age, but the other was a few years younger and wore some sort of elaborate Christmas tree costume. On the top of the boyβs head was a star and only his face and feet were uncovered by a giant fabric tree upon which glittery applique ornaments had been glued.

βYou look ridiculous,β the older boy said.
Spock had to agree.
But the boy noticeably deflated and his bottom lip trembled.
βOh donβt cry,β the older boy snapped. βYou had to know how stupid you would look in that dumbass costume when you chose to wear it, Jim. Why Mom agreed to let you wear it when we came to get a tree is beyond me.β
βBecause she made it, Sam. It was for the pageant at school.β
βI know what it was for. I just donβt know why you had to be such a dork as to wear it tonight.β
βBecause we were coming for a tree and I thought it would be funny.β
Sam grimaced. βWell, itβs not. It just makes you look stupid. Iβm going over to the next aisle so no one sees me with you. Donβt follow me.β
βSamββ
And the older boy left the younger one standing there by himself. For a moment the young boy did nothing, just stared at the ground. His cheeks were so red, Spock feared he might have a fit.
When Spock took a few steps closer, he noticed a single tear had fallen onto the boyβs cheek. And he realized then that he not only did not agree with the bully βSamβ, he actually hated the other boy.
The young boy suddenly looked up and Spock saw that he had the bluest eyes Spock had ever seen. And they wereβ¦beautiful, even as they glistened with tears.
βUh.β
βI am sorry I overheard that other Human picking on you.β
βThatβs my brother,β he said. βIβm used to it. He doesnβt like me.β
βHe is a fool. My name is Spock.β
βJ-Jim.β
βHello, Jim.β Spock held out his hand. βCome with me.β
Jim frowned though he put his hand in Spockβs. βTo where?β
βI was told that I could choose any tree on the lot,β Spock explained. βI have chosen you.β
βMe?β
βYou are a tree, are you not?β
βWellβ¦β
βSpock? Oh there you are.β Mother came down the aisle toward them. She smiled widely at Jim. βOh who is this?β
βHis name is Jim and he is the tree I have chosen.β
Mother actually laughed. βHello, Jim. Spock, Jim is a boy, not a tree.β
βBut he is dressed as one and you saidββ
βJim! James Tiberius! Where are you?β
Jimβs eyes widened and he dropped Spockβs hand. βThatβs my mommy.β
Suddenly a blonde Human woman appeared together with the bully βSamβ. βThere you are. Donβt get separated from the family.β She glanced at Spock and his mom. βAnd you shouldnβt bother other people.β
βHeβs not bothering us,β Mother assured her.
The woman smiled. βOh, well, good. But we do have to go. Say goodbye to your friends, Jim.β
βK. Bye Spock and lady.β
Spock nearly took hold of an ornament on Jimβs tree to pull him back, but at that moment, Mother put her hand on his shoulder and stopped him. They watched the Humans walk away.
βSpock? Whatβs gotten into you? You know you canβt keep another child.β
Spock nodded. βYes. But I have not chosen another tree.β
βI know. Itβs all right. Your father has found one. Letβs go.β
Spock trailed after but he did not forget the Human boy dressed as a tree and in fact he was certain he would meet that boy again some day. He was right.

Older brothers suck sometimes. Sam was so mean. Jim is downright adorable. Which of course Spock saw immediately. I think it was funny too Jim!
I love when Spock comes to his rescue. Even when itβs the emotional kind.
Well done!

I just absolutely melted into the floor. This flash is nothing but oooey goooey goodness and wonder. I am absolutely at-first-sight in love with this. So adorable.
I had absolutely no idea where you were going with this in the beginning. I LOVE where you took it. And that you added hope for the future for the boy with the bullying brother and the boy who had decided never to marry.
May they live wildly happy ever after.

Yes I have to agree there’s nothing cuter than little Spock and little Jim together. I don’t know why it just is!

Yes, it just IS. You have brothers, right? Do you write this from experience with them?

I do indeed have two and both are older than me, though the oldest, admittedly, played little attention to me as he was seven years older, but my next oldest brother was three years older so yeah somewhat experience indeed π

I greatly enjoyed this story. I had previously typed out a comment and didnβt hit the post button. Yikes! Sorry.
Amanda has high expectations of Spock picking the tree. Love him picking Jim and comforting him by saying that Sam is a fool for treating Jim as he does. Jimβs tears greatly effects Spock. Thatβs his Tβhyβla, although he is unaware of it!
Jim is very young but he trusts Spock immediately as he puts his hand in Spockβs. Iβm picturing this in my miind. So cute!
Spock is indeed right, he will be meeting Jim again one day.
