Advent Day 7

Spock went looking for Jim in the early evening on the first night of Hanukkah. They were visiting Spockβs parents on Vulcan during the time Hanukkah started and though Sarek did not care at all, Spockβs mother had been raised Jewish and enjoyed participating in many of the traditional celebrations.
That morning she had cheerfully served them all sufganiyot. On the menu tonight was potato latkes.
Jim had given to sitting outside in the evenings, the view of the city being one he was particularly fond of. He would sit outside sipping coffee and mulling over the fate of the Universe. Or so he would jest with Spock.
βJim, Mother is preparing to light the Shamash candle to begin the first night of Hanukkah,β Spock said as he found his husband sitting next to the wall that surrounded Sarekβs house.
Jim smiled. βGreat. I meant to go in before. I got lost in thought. Help me up?β
Spock reached down and pulled Jim up from the chair. He had a feeling Jim was bored with their visit, but he never said so.
βDo I need to change?β
βCertainly not.β
They returned to the house where Mother waited. There was no sign of Sarek, which Jim commented on.
βSarek doesnβt come for the lighting?β
Mother smiled and shrugged. βSometimes yes, sometimes no. At present he is in conference and we cannot wait.β
They gathered near the Menorah. Mother lit the candle in the middle, the Shamash candle.
βBaruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech Ha’olam, asher kidshanu bβmitzvotav vβtzivanu lβhadlik ner shel Hanukkah.β Mother spoke the first blessing.
βAmen,β Jim and Spock murmured.
βBaruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech Ha’olam, sheβasah nisim lβavoteinu, bβyamim haheim bazman hazeh.β
Spockβs mother smiled at them.
βAnd now, since it is the first night, we say the Shehecheyanu.β
βBlessed are You, O Lord Our God, Ruler of the Universe, Who has kept us alive, sustained us and brought us to this seasonβ, Mother said in standard this time.
βAmen,β they replied.
She used the Shamash candle to light the first candle on the left. She then picked up the Menorah and brought it to sit in a window to the left of the main door.
βThere! Thank you, boys, for indulging me.β
βWe are hardly boys, Mother.β
She laughed. βTo me you are. Letβs have some wine. Well, you and me, Jim. Spock can have some if he wants.β
Spock inclined his head. βA small amount would be fine.β
She poured them all small glasses of red wine and they sat in the room overlooking the Menorah.
βMany Vulcans over the year have asked Sarek why he allows me to continue with these traditions,β she said, taking a sip.
Jim raised his brows. βAnd? What does he say?β
She smirked. βI do not allow her anything. She is free to make her own choices.β
Jim saluted with his wine glass. βWise.β
βIt reminds me of home, of my family. For years, when they were alive, we could participate in it together, over conferences, videos, that kind of thing. Once when I was quite young and Spock had been recently born, we were even on Earth at the time, and we spent that time with them in person.β
βI did not know that,β Spock replied. βI do not remember.β
βIt was a lovely time. And you were a Kanbu.β
Spock sniffed.
βNow,β she said wistfully. βMost are gone and I do it to remember them. Iβll be following them soon enough.β
βMotherββ
βNo one lives forever, Spock. Not even me. I am not saying I will pass tomorrow, but each Hanukkah might be my last.β She shook her head. βI donβt pretend to think youβll carry on the traditions when I do, but itβs nice to be able to share it with you now, while we are both here.β
Jim reached over and squeezed Spockβs hand. He knew Jim was thinking of already having lost Spock once. And Spock did not look forward to the day he would face without Jim. Without them all, likely.
But for nowβ
βHow about a toast?β Jim said, speaking up cheerfully. βTo being together, to family, friends, to traditions. Happy Hanukkah.β
Mother smiled. βHappy Hanukkah.β
And they all took their sips. The potato latkes were particularly good that night.

Oooh. The feelings! Right in the heart. In the best ways. I love the melancholy, but tempered by the family togetherness. Beautiful

Ooooo – TOS Hanukkah, This is beautiful and thank you for adding all the celebrant Hebrew words. As far as I know there is absolutely no Jewish in my lineage, but I love it all the same! And I’ve watched before but never seen them written out.
I can much easier envision TOS spirk in this story than AOS. Just because of their youth and the brashness that accompanies it, I’m sure. Here, it is as if they are of one mind, as they would be, bonded for years.
Thank you so much for this!!

Yes I think it definitely had to be older TOS Spirk for this as it has a much more mellow feel
I had to, of course, look all that up, but it was interesting to do so π

Love this flash. Itβs a lovely commemoration of Spockβs roots. How Sarek reacts to other Vulcans questions about Amandaβs practices is indeed very wise. βI do not allow her anything. She is free to make her own choices.β Very wise man!
