โTarsus Preparatory School,โ Captain Christopher Pike read off.
Jim nodded. โYes, sir.โ
Pike frowned. He was seated behind his desk, going over Jimโs application for admittance to Starfleet Academy. โRough time.โ
โFortunately, the school was evacuated before the worst of it,โ Jim replied. He folded his hands in his lap and tried not to twist them together.
โBy your headmaster.โ
โThatโs right, sir. Retired Starfleet captain Robert April.โ
โYes, I knew April. Left active duty after the partial loss of his left leg. Settled on Tarsus IV.โ Pike pursed his lips. โGot you all off but he was not as lucky.โ
โYes.โ
โHow was the school before all that?โ
โI learned a lot,โ Jim conceded. โMy mother taught me not to speak ill of the dead, though.โ
Pike smiled slightly at that. โConfidential, James.โ
โI prefer Jim for the most part, Captain.โ
โOkay, Jim. Tell me what you thought of Captain April.โ
โHe evacuated all of us students and ultimately saved our lives. For that heโs a hero, sir.โ
โBut?โ
Jim shrugged. โHe could be a strict disciplinarian. Which is why I was sent there in the first place.โ He paused. โThat being said, I think he should be remembered from his heroic acts.
โI see. You might be interested to know that thereโs a currently enrolled cadet who also came from the school.โ
โOh?โ
โSpock is his name. Son of the Vulcan ambassador to Earth. Know him?โ
โOnly rather nominally, sir. I spoke briefly to him when we were both waiting for our parents on the space station after evacuation. Not even sure heโd remember me after all these years.โ
โUnderstood. Well, if you run in to him, I didnโt want you to be surprised.โ
Jim smiled. โRun into him, Captain?โ
Pike returned the smile and stood up, hand thrust forward to shake Jimโs hand. Jim rose too.
โCongratulations on being accepted into Starfleet Academy, Jim. Youโll be starting this next semester.โ
โThank you, Captain Pike, I appreciate it.โ

โI want a milkshake. Do you want a milkshake?โ
Jim shook his head, amused at his mother as she sat across from him at the diner theyโd headed to after he came out of Christopher Pikeโs office. They decided to celebrate by coming to this old diner before boarding the shuttle back to Riverside. The next semester didnโt start for a few weeks, so heโd spend most of that time back at the farmhouse.
His mother had told him that back in her academy days sheโd gone to this old diner numerous times with Jimโs dad.
โIโll pass.โ
โNo milkshake?โ
Jim laughed. โIโm already getting a cheeseburger. I have to fit in my cadet uniform, Mom.โ
โYouโre slim and fit. But okay. I wonโt push. Iโm getting a salad that way I can have the milkshake.โ
โOkay.โ Jim glanced out the window. โIโll have to be careful not to come here too often.โ
โJust like George. Did you know your Grandpa Kirk was turned down for the Academy?โ
โTurned down?โ
โYep. Idiots. Thatโs why your father tried so hard to get in there, you know. Wanted to prove them wrong about the Kirk family. I think heโd rather have stayed on the farm to be honest.โ His mother shook her head. โIโm not surprised you got right in.โ
โYeah well. Hey, I guess Captain Pike said thereโs another cadet there from the school. Tarsus I mean.โ
โOh?โ
โSpock. From Vulcan. I guess his dadโs some dignitary or something.โ
Mom pursed her lips. โDo you suppose he was sent there for getting into trouble?โ
Jim laughed again. โDoubtful. I mean not everyone there was sent because they were a delinquent, Mom.โ He paused. โSome were, obviously.โ
โJim, if I could changeโโ
โI know. I know it was Frank. And the experience wasnโt all bad,โ Jim said, softly. โAnyway, I am guessing not everyone who was there got there because of someone like Frank, but the truth of it is that I know nothing about Spock at all. Maybe he is a secret troublemaker.โ
They both laughed at that. The idea did seem absurd.
Later when they had finished their dinner, they headed back for Riverside. Jim couldnโt wait to return to San Francisco to begin the next chapter of his life.

Now I do wonder why Spock was at the school. Secret troublemaker?
I’m glad Jim was accepted! Of course he would be ๐
I can’t wait for more!

It IS true that not all kids sent there were troublemakers, lol, so we shall see!

Oh Jim, you have no idea what a troublemaker Spock is soon to become in your life. And vice versa. Your adventure is only beginning!
(Now, how in the world did you expect us to read this, sticking THAT picture at the beginning? Took me awhile. Heavy swoon!!!)

Oh – and according to TNG Unification Part 1 – Spock WAS a troublemaker. I can so see Sarek sending Spock to Tarsus IV to stop his disappearances into the mountains…

Yep I was thinking of that scene

Spock as a troublemaker! Love this concept! Love this story! I wonder if he really is a troublemaker? Maybe from Sarekโs POV he is. I sure bet Spock with his eidetic memory remembers Jim! Jim certainly remembers Spock!
Iโd say Jim did very well on the admission interview with Pike. He was very diplomatic and mature in his responses.
Question- how many years has it been since Jim met Spock? Jim says… โafter all these years.โ Of course when youโre young, even a couple years seem like an eternity.
Looking Forward to the next installment of this story, just as Jim is looking forward to the next chapter of his life.

Several. Jim was a young teen at the school on Tarsus, I’d say the equivalent to 9th or 10th grade to our way of thinking and Spock was a senior (12th grade or so), If you recall Jim previously thought how Spock had started at the school prior to him. So I guess that would have made Jim about 15 at the time he was evacuated from Tarsus. For the Academy I am going with about 20 for Jim and 23 or so for Spock. I’m thinking Jim would have gone to our equivalent of Junior College for a couple of years before applying to the Academy. He’d be a first year student while Spock is in about his third year there. All this means its been about 5 years since Jim saw Spock on the space station.

You know, even if I didn’t like reading your stuff, I would totally come back for all the pretty pictures. But since I do (a lot), that’s like a two-in-one thing :).
So…they could totally be two troublemakers. And they’re totally gonna meet at the academy. That would totally make the rate of trouble go up exponentially. Besides, it depends on the POV and from Sarek’s, I can totally see Spock being a troublemaker.
I very much approve of Winona’s hunger for a milkshake. I would definitely take the milkshake over the cheeseburger.
