Decided to do this from Amanda’s point of view

It was a rare occasion when Amandaβs son asked to meet with her. It wasnβt at all that Spock did not love her. She knew he did, though he had not said so since he was a very small boy. She knew it, nonetheless.
But Spock, being Spock and Vulcan, he was not very sociable. And certainly not with his parents.
They were currently in San Francisco, though, where Spock was going to school and she had hoped to see him while there. On her own of course. Sarek was still not pleased with their sonβs choices, though he had welcomed a visit just before the holidays with Spock.
Still the late invitation to meet with Spock at one of the familyβs favorite restaurants had been surprising and unusual enough that Amanda was certain something was up.
When she arrived to be seated, Spock had already arrived and been waiting for her. Amanda herself was punctual, but Spock was always early.
He stood when she approached the table he had selected, but she waved him back into place. She knew better than to greet him with a hug or kiss.
She smiled though, very pleased to see him. βYou look well.β
βThank you, Mother. You do as well.β Spock hesitated. Then said, βI have moved locations.β
βYouβre not at the dorm anymore?β This was surprising news to her. βI thought you liked staying with that boy. Um. Jim?β
Amanda had been surprised how warm Spockβs eyes had gotten when discussing his roommate, because that had not been like her son at all. Sheβd even theorized out loud to Sarek that Spock might have a crush on his roommate but Sarek had downplayed the idea.
At that moment, the waiter arrived with a pot of tea Spock had ordered and they both ordered their usual favorite dishes at the restaurant.
Spock poured them tea and said, βYes, Jim. Jim moved with me.β
She paused in the middle of stirring sweetener into her tea. βDid he?β
Her son shook his head. βIt was not my intention, initially but thenβ¦β
βThen?β
βHe inferred that moving out would be βditchingβ him, he realized I intended to move because I was not comfortable living with him, and he thought we were friends andβ¦β Spock paused.
βWait. You wanted to move out to get away from him?β
Spock nodded.
Amanda frowned. βI see. Well. Then, Spock, was it wise to have him move with you? I donβt really understand.β
βNor do I. But his clear disappointment in me drove me to alter my plan and I said he could move with me. Completely illogical.β
βHmm. I had gotten the impression you liked Jim.β
βI do.β
βYet you were uncomfortable living with him. It canβt be because heβs human, since you lived with me.β She laughed. But Spock did not look amused. βSpock, will you explain?β
He blew out a long breath and took several sips of tea. Then the waiter arrived with their dinner, so Amanda ate for a bit before pressing him.
βSpock?β
βThe reason I was uncomfortable living with Jim is that I developed feeling of affection for him.β Spock looked away. βMore than friendship.β
Then Amanda had been right. Of course she would gloat to Sarek later. Right now this required her serious attention.
βWell. Why didnβt you tell Jim that you wished to consider himβ¦romantically?β
βThat is not an easy conversation for me. And while I was still contemplating the exact nature of my emotional attachment to him, I saw him with a paramour.β
βOh.β Amanda tried not to sigh. And be affronted on her sonβs behalf. She hated seeing her quite sensitive son getting hurt. βWell.β
βI did not wish to live with Jim while experiencing unrequited love. But when he expressed disappointment, I could not refrain from inviting him to move with me.β
βIs that why you wanted to see me?β Amanda guessed.
Spock nodded. βToday was moving day. It went well enough, but Jim already mentioned each of us having intimate partners over and Iβ¦β
βWhat?β She asked gently.
βI am not comfortable having him bring paramours over.β
Amanda sat back. βI think that you have to be honest with him, Spock. I recommend expressing your deeper feelings to him.β
βAnd when he says he does not share them?β
βIf he says that, then you must accept it of course. But I think perhaps his expressed disappointment at exiting your sharing the dorm with him just might be because he has similar feelings and just doesnβt know how to tell you.β
βDoubtful.β
She smiled softly. βIf you arenβt comfortable telling him how you feel personally about him, then at the least you should tell him you arenβt comfortable with him bringing lovers over to your apartment. If he doesnβt accept your terms, then heβs welcome to move back to the dorms. Your feelings and needs matter too, Spock. Speak up for yourself.β
Spock knew she was right and agreed, but he forecast that heβd have another stomachache when he had such a conversation with Jim. But if it sent Jim packing, it would be, perhaps, for the best.

Brilliant to do this one from Amanda’s POV – we wouldn’t have gotten the image of Amanda gloating to Sarek otherwise. That is totally my favorite part. And of course Amanda tells Spock to talk to Jim, duh! Can’t wait to see that conversation!

Isn’t that the perfect image? And you know she would

Oh this. I love Amanda. I love that she always know the right thing to say. It helps I absolutely agree with her lol.
I feel for Spock so much in this one. I have a stomach ache too. Poor baby. Hopefully itβll all work out if he can be brave!

This makes me think of a breakfast we had with parents one year before a trip. One of the dads was talking with me. I don’t know WHAT his daughter had gotten upset about that morning, maybe not making their usual starbucks stop on the way to school or something, but he was saying how she was the most brilliant when it came to book learning and the dumbest when it came to just life! haha
I relate. Not with the brilliant part but the other.
And I think right now Amanda might have entertained a stray thought like that too.
I love her being affronted on Spock’s behalf and advising him to stand up for himself.
And Spock actually IS right – if Jim isn’t going to return his affection, it WOULD be best they didn’t live together. Each of Jim’s dates brought home would be like a knife in his heart.

Yes Amanda knows Spock is not brilliant when it comes to dealing with emotions especially of the nature he feels toward Jim.
Yes Spock is right, but of course do we really know how Jim feels….
