It’s sneak time. And it’s never too early to begin your Christmas story. This won’t debut until December. But you lucky blog followers (ha) get to see the beginning now.
Thereβs just the slightest bit chill in the air as James Kirk held open the department store door for Winona Kirk as they exited.
βBrr,β his mother said. βItβs gotten cold since we went inside.β
βWe were in there for hours,β Jim replied, making his tone just a little like a protest. He stopped and adjusted the scarf around her neck. βAnd anyway, this is nothing like Riverside in December.β
βThank God for that.β She smiled. βDo you think I got enough?β
βYes.β
βBut maybeββ
βMom, yes. You got plenty for heavenβs sake.β He looped his arm in hers and dragged her away from the store before she can decided to go back inside.
βLetβs go to Humphreyβs.β Her eyes were glowing.
Humphreyβs was just a little restaurant, almost a diner really, about half a block or so down from the department store. Once it had actually been in the department store or so his mom said. She had a complete and utter fondness for it because back in their academy days, when Winona and George were just new and in love, theyβd gone there many times.
βSure, letβs do it.β
They got seated by the window, looking out to the street, which was shining brightly with red and green lights, and gold and silver garland set up on old fashioned lamp posts. Holiday music played softly in the background at Humphreys. Theyβd stuffed her shopping bags under the table and against the wall under the window.
When the waitress arrived at their table, his mother turned pleading eyes at him. βPlease?β
Jim laughed because he knew exactly what she wanted and wasnβt that a little freaky? Kirk habits died hard. βFine.β
She beamed a smile at the waitress. βTwo hot cocoas with peppermint schnapps.β
βComing right up,β the waitress promised.
Winona sighed and rested her chin on her hands. βThis brings back such memories.β
βI know.β
βYou could still come with me.β
βI know that too,β Jim said with an agreeable smile. βBut no. This is your time with Sam and his family.β
βYouβre Samβs family too, you know.β
βJust go and have a great time with Sam and Aurelan, Debbie and Peter. Theyβre excited youβll be spending Christmas on Deneva with them.β
βBut what about you?β His mother grimaced. βPlease donβt tell me youβre going to Riverside by yourself.β
βHell no. Not dealing with the snow. Iβm staying in San Francisco.β
Currently, he was on a six month leave, required by Starfleet, before going out for his second five year mission, thank you very much. He couldnβt wait for the leave to be over. But unfortunately he wasΒ only about a month into it.
βHm. Nobody should spend the holidays alone, Jimmy.β
The waitress brought over their spiked cocoa and then looked at them expectantly.
βIβll have the French Onion soup and a side of garlic bread.β
βThe club sandwich,β his mother said. She looked at Jim as the waitress left. βOnions and garlic? Not kissing anyone tonight Iβm guessing.β
He rolled his eyes at that. βObviously.β
βWhat about your friend Leonard?β
βI donβt kiss him,β Jim said with a straight face.
βFunny. I meant whatβs he doing for the holidays?β She picked up her cocoa and blew on it.
βSpending them with his daughter in Georgia.β
βAnd your first officer?β
βHeβs a Vulcan. They donβt do holidays.β
She took a sip of the cocoa and smiled. βSo yummy.β
Jim loved when she was like this. AlmostΒ innocent.
βAnd anyway, heβs probably spending his leave with his fiancΓ©.β
βHe has a fiancΓ©?β
Jim shrugged. βYeah, pretty much. My communications officer.β
Mom shook her head at that but she didnβt elaborate further on her thoughts. βWhat about that evil admiralβs daughter?β
He laughed again. βCarol? Uh, Mom, she left the Enterprise because we didnβt work out.β
She sniffed. βJust as well. Sheβs probably as batshit crazy as her daddy.β
βYouβre too much. And anyway, Iβm fine here. I donβt need anyone to keep me company.β
βWhat are you going to do?β
βOh, I donβt know. Probably get myself a littleΒ tree and some decorations and watch old Christmas movies or something. Maybe make some gingerbread and cookies.β
She bit her lip. βSounds lonely.β
βItβs not. Iβm looking forward to it.β
βDonβt let me forget to give you your present before I leave.β
βI told you notΒ to get me anything.β
She arched her brows. βI didnβt listen.β
βYou never do.β He took a big sip of his cocoa.
βRemember that Christmas before Frank? It was the last one we had with just you, me and Sammy.β
Jim nodded. βSure, I remember. I loved that Christmas.β
βMe too,β she said wistfully. βMaybe if you came to Denevaββ
βMom.β
The waitress arrived at the moment with their food, successfully distracting his mother.

Such a treat seeing this and getting a sneak peak of your Holiday story. I like Jim’s mother, reminds me of how my Mom is when we are together. I have never had Peppermint schnapps, is it good? Now you have me in the Christmas mood… damn and it’s October still. Well, maybe I can listen to holiday music as I write today.
Thanks for sharing your sneak peak.

Yeah Mom is nice in this for a change. I am basing this Jim off the Beyond Jim who spoke of calling his Mom, implying they have at least some kind of relationship

It’s good in cocoa if you like peppermint cocoa but if you don’t, it won’t work for you

Gosh, and I thought school music programs always beat everyone else to working on Christmas (except catalogs and stores). You definitely beat us. Can’t wait for more.

Yep the last thing I need is to be scrambling at the last minute to come up with something worthy of me and Spirk and since I am taking it mostly easy this weekend it was the perfect time to start something I knew wouldn’t be posted

Loved this beginning π I like that you’re basing it on the Jim from Beyond.
Can’t wait to read more when the time comes!
I started a third xmas story last year, never got past the first chapter but I may go back to it now, but with some changes.

Jim sounds like he’s setting himself up for a lonely holiday. But he does seem to be unconcerned about it. Looking forward to reading this story!
I recall having peppermint schnapps in hot cocoa many years ago at a bar in Greenich Village NYC! Yummy, but very rich!
