Sneak Peek December Holiday Story

It’s sneak time. And it’s never too early to begin your Christmas story. This won’t debut until December. But you lucky blog followers (ha) get to see the beginning now.

There’s just the slightest bit chill in the air as James Kirk held open the department store door for Winona Kirk as they exited.

β€œBrr,” his mother said. β€œIt’s gotten cold since we went inside.”

β€œWe were in there for hours,” Jim replied, making his tone just a little like a protest. He stopped and adjusted the scarf around her neck. β€œAnd anyway, this is nothing like Riverside in December.”

β€œThank God for that.” She smiled. β€œDo you think I got enough?”

β€œYes.”

β€œBut maybe—”

β€œMom, yes. You got plenty for heaven’s sake.” He looped his arm in hers and dragged her away from the store before she can decided to go back inside.

β€œLet’s go to Humphrey’s.” Her eyes were glowing.

Humphrey’s was just a little restaurant, almost a diner really, about half a block or so down from the department store. Once it had actually been in the department store or so his mom said. She had a complete and utter fondness for it because back in their academy days, when Winona and George were just new and in love, they’d gone there many times.

β€œSure, let’s do it.”

They got seated by the window, looking out to the street, which was shining brightly with red and green lights, and gold and silver garland set up on old fashioned lamp posts. Holiday music played softly in the background at Humphreys. They’d stuffed her shopping bags under the table and against the wall under the window.

When the waitress arrived at their table, his mother turned pleading eyes at him. β€œPlease?”

Jim laughed because he knew exactly what she wanted and wasn’t that a little freaky? Kirk habits died hard. β€œFine.”

She beamed a smile at the waitress. β€œTwo hot cocoas with peppermint schnapps.”

β€œComing right up,” the waitress promised.

Winona sighed and rested her chin on her hands. β€œThis brings back such memories.”

β€œI know.”

β€œYou could still come with me.”

β€œI know that too,” Jim said with an agreeable smile. β€œBut no. This is your time with Sam and his family.”

β€œYou’re Sam’s family too, you know.”

β€œJust go and have a great time with Sam and Aurelan, Debbie and Peter. They’re excited you’ll be spending Christmas on Deneva with them.”

β€œBut what about you?” His mother grimaced. β€œPlease don’t tell me you’re going to Riverside by yourself.”

β€œHell no. Not dealing with the snow. I’m staying in San Francisco.”

Currently, he was on a six month leave, required by Starfleet, before going out for his second five year mission, thank you very much. He couldn’t wait for the leave to be over. But unfortunately he wasΒ  only about a month into it.

β€œHm. Nobody should spend the holidays alone, Jimmy.”

The waitress brought over their spiked cocoa and then looked at them expectantly.

β€œI’ll have the French Onion soup and a side of garlic bread.”

β€œThe club sandwich,” his mother said. She looked at Jim as the waitress left. β€œOnions and garlic? Not kissing anyone tonight I’m guessing.”

He rolled his eyes at that. β€œObviously.”

β€œWhat about your friend Leonard?”

β€œI don’t kiss him,” Jim said with a straight face.

β€œFunny. I meant what’s he doing for the holidays?” She picked up her cocoa and blew on it.

β€œSpending them with his daughter in Georgia.”

β€œAnd your first officer?”

β€œHe’s a Vulcan. They don’t do holidays.”

She took a sip of the cocoa and smiled. β€œSo yummy.”

Jim loved when she was like this. AlmostΒ  innocent.

β€œAnd anyway, he’s probably spending his leave with his fiancΓ©.”

β€œHe has a fiancΓ©?”

Jim shrugged. β€œYeah, pretty much. My communications officer.”

Mom shook her head at that but she didn’t elaborate further on her thoughts. β€œWhat about that evil admiral’s daughter?”

He laughed again. β€œCarol? Uh, Mom, she left the Enterprise because we didn’t work out.”

She sniffed. β€œJust as well. She’s probably as batshit crazy as her daddy.”

β€œYou’re too much. And anyway, I’m fine here. I don’t need anyone to keep me company.”

β€œWhat are you going to do?”

β€œOh, I don’t know. Probably get myself a littleΒ  tree and some decorations and watch old Christmas movies or something. Maybe make some gingerbread and cookies.”

She bit her lip. β€œSounds lonely.”

β€œIt’s not. I’m looking forward to it.”

β€œDon’t let me forget to give you your present before I leave.”

β€œI told you notΒ  to get me anything.”

She arched her brows. β€œI didn’t listen.”

β€œYou never do.” He took a big sip of his cocoa.

β€œRemember that Christmas before Frank? It was the last one we had with just you, me and Sammy.”

Jim nodded. β€œSure, I remember. I loved that Christmas.”

β€œMe too,” she said wistfully. β€œMaybe if you came to Deneva—”

β€œMom.”

The waitress arrived at the moment with their food, successfully distracting his mother.

Such a treat seeing this and getting a sneak peak of your Holiday story. I like Jim’s mother, reminds me of how my Mom is when we are together. I have never had Peppermint schnapps, is it good? Now you have me in the Christmas mood… damn and it’s October still. Well, maybe I can listen to holiday music as I write today.

Thanks for sharing your sneak peak.

Yeah Mom is nice in this for a change. I am basing this Jim off the Beyond Jim who spoke of calling his Mom, implying they have at least some kind of relationship

It’s good in cocoa if you like peppermint cocoa but if you don’t, it won’t work for you

Gosh, and I thought school music programs always beat everyone else to working on Christmas (except catalogs and stores). You definitely beat us. Can’t wait for more.

Yep the last thing I need is to be scrambling at the last minute to come up with something worthy of me and Spirk and since I am taking it mostly easy this weekend it was the perfect time to start something I knew wouldn’t be posted

Loved this beginning πŸ™‚ I like that you’re basing it on the Jim from Beyond.
Can’t wait to read more when the time comes!
I started a third xmas story last year, never got past the first chapter but I may go back to it now, but with some changes.

Jim sounds like he’s setting himself up for a lonely holiday. But he does seem to be unconcerned about it. Looking forward to reading this story!

I recall having peppermint schnapps in hot cocoa many years ago at a bar in Greenich Village NYC! Yummy, but very rich!
