Valentine’s Day Flash

Jim waited to see Captain Pike in a crowded waiting room. He knew Pike was a busy man. He knew he probably should have gotten an appointment. But he hadn’t wanted to wait for that but apparently he was having to anyway.

He felt pretty stupid. Mortified might be a better word. He stared down at his now bleeding cuticles. He’d been picking at them since he’d been sitting there waiting.

And he had to pee. But he was afraid if he got up to do so, the severe looking brunette ensign manning the desk outside Pike’s office would skip right over him and give the next slot to someone else waiting.

“Kirk. Cadet Kirk,” the Ensign said in a loud, nasally voice.

Jim went up to the desk and she sniffed. “He’ll see you now.”

He nodded and went past the desk to the double glass doors. They opened at his approached and he stepped inside.

Behind a large oak desk sat Pike. He hadn’t seen the captain since that day in Riverside Jim got on the shuttle after Pike dared him to do better.

Pike looked up and gestured to a chair in front of the desk. “Jim. Have a seat.”

“Thank you, sir.”

After Jim took the chair, Pike raised both eyebrows in query. “I didn’t expect to see you here.”

“Yes, sir. I have a request to make.”

“Okay.”

“I’d like to be reinstated to Professor Spock’s Merits of Logic class.”

Pike steepled his fingers. “That course is an elective and not required for command.”

“I realize that. But it was a course I found interesting prior to my…being kicked out.”

“And why were you booted from that class, Jim?”

Why?

****

Jim smirked as he read the text from Feeney. It was a stupid text, really, and only mildly amusing, but he responded to it anyway.

So what if I do want to sleep with the teacher? He’s hot. You want to too, don’t even pretend otherwise.

And then Jim located the “eggplant” 🍆emoji on his communicator and added it to his text.

I’ll bet his is massive.

Jim looked up at Spock’s back just before he hit send. He was busy demonstrating something on an overhead screen. Jim hit send.

And Feeney, the swine, burst into loud guffaws.

Jim turned red and slunk down in his chair just as Professor Spock turned around.

He glanced at Feeney who was still making a loud nuisance of himself and then to Jim as Feeney took a second to point to Jim.

Spock stepped forward. “Your communicator please.”

“Uh.”

“Your communicator, Cadet Kirk.”

Jim cleared his throat. “I’d rather not.”

Spock thrust out his hand.

Jim handed him the communicator.

Spock frowned slightly. “Why is there an eggplant on your screen?”

And the entire class busted up.

****

“I see,” Pike said slowly. “So you were disruptive, inappropriate, and insubordinate.”

Jim winced. “It could be viewed that way.”

“It was viewed that way by Spock. And he’s not wrong. Request denied.”

“Sir—”

Pike held up his hand. “Spock requested that you not be reinstated.”

“He knew I would request it?”

“Apparently. He also requested that there be no mark on your record for the dismissal from the class. He did likewise for Feeney. As I said, this was an elective course that you don’t actually need so the only reason for you to want to go back is to prove something that no one thinks needs proving. And of there is nothing else, Jim, you’re dismissed.”

“Sir—”

“Jim, I have a lot of people waiting out there to speak to me. And this is Valentine’s Day and I still need to get flowers for my wife. So, dismissed.”

Jim left, realizing there was really no point to arguing further.

He went to the restroom on his way out and then left the building feeling dejected.

He should be celebrating. He would have no mark on his record and it would be one less class he’d have to deal with for the semester.

Too bad he had liked that class and most especially Spock. And his idiotic foolish behavior with Feeney had cost him that. And likely any chance he ever had with the Vulcan. If there had been any, really.

He was only vaguely surprised to find his best friend, Leonard “Bones” McCoy, waiting for him.

“How’d it go?”

“I’m not allowed back in.”

Bones nodded. “Consider yourself lucky because that class was boring anyways.”

Jim frowned. “Anyway.”

“Huh?”

“You don’t need the s after anyway. That’s not correct.”

“Are you the grammar police?” Bones demanded.

“A guy has to have something. Apparently it’s not going to be on my record that I got kicked out though.”

Bones chuckled. “His massive eggplant.”

Jim groaned. “Don’t remind me. I feel stupid enough as it is. So where are we going tonight?”

“Tonight?” Suddenly Bones looked uncomfortable. “It’s Valentine’s Day.”

“So?”

“I have a date, genius.”

“Wait. What? I thought we’d go stag.”

“You thought wrong. Sorry, Jim. But this time you’ll have to find something to do on your own.”

“Fine. Whatever.”

As it turned out, Jim went home to his dorm room alone. He was, admittedly, feeling sorry for himself. His reputation as some kind of Lothario was mostly exaggerated anyway. And the only one he really wanted to spend time with wouldn’t give him the time of day.

Jim had just opened a bottle of whiskey to drown his sorrows when there was a knock at his door.

Standing there was Spock. One hand was behind his back, but in the other was a brightly wrapped box.

Jim blinked. “Uh.”

“May I come in?”

Jim stood back to allow him inside. He glanced around his messy room. “I, uh, I wasn’t expecting anyone so the place is a mess.”

“That is fortunate.”

“It is?”

“Not the mess part, but that you were not expecting someone.” Spock held out the box. “Happy Valentine’s Day.”

His mouth dry, Jim opened the box. He stared at the large eggplant inside. “What—”

“It is my massive eggplant.”

Jim’s gaze flew to his, his face hot with embarrassment. “Uh—”

Spock shook his head. “It is an effort at a joke, Cadet.”

Then he brought his hand from behind his back to reveal a large bouquet of at least two dozen pink and red roses.

“These are for you.”

“I don’t understand it.”

Spock sighed. “You cannot be a student in my class and date me.”

Jim’s mouth dropped open. “Did I…are we going to be dating?”

“I have presented you with flowers and my eggplant. I would think it was obvious.”

Jim laughed. “I see.” He tossed aside the eggplant, grabbed the flowers, and planted a long lingering kiss on Spock’s lips. It was returned most enthusiastically.

Bombay, Chapter 4

5 Years Earlier, Starship Endeavor

“Report.”

Jim Kirk looked up from his PADD into the questioning face of his commanding officer, Robert April.

“It’s currently too dangerous to use the transporter, Captain.”

“Damn. Rigel 9 really needs those medical supplies.”

Doctor Helen Moore bit her lip and shook her head. “Agreed. They’re really dealing with something down there. What about the shuttlecraft?”

“With that Ion storm that’s going to be risky too,” Jim stated.

“Less risky than trying to do the transporter though,” Dr. Moore said. She turned to April. “I’m a pretty good pilot, Bob. I only need a few medical personnel with me. Just two. I’m willing to risk it.”

“Helen—” Jim began to protest.

“Jim, I know what you’re going to say. But the citizens of Rigel 9 are dying and without this needed medicine, they don’t stand a chance.”

“We wail for the storm to pass,” Jim maintained.

“And that could be days. They might be dead by then! Bob, I can do this.”

Captain April pursed his lips. “Okay, Helen.”

“Captain—”

April held up his hand to cut Jim off. “Your protests are duly noted, Jim. But Helen’s right. Rigel 9 needs these supplies. But I’m afraid I’m going to have to ask you to go along with the party, Jim.”

“What?” Helen exclaimed. “No!. Captain, I don’t need to endanger unnecessary personnel. Commander Kirk—”

“Will accompany you. I’m not going to have a team of only trained medical crew members go into a potentially hostile situation. Commander Kirk’s an exemplary negotiator and well-trained in combat.”

“But—”

“You both have your orders. Doctor, Commander. Get your team together and the supplies and head out.”

Jim watched Captain April depart, then he turned to Helen. “It’s okay.”

“It is not. I never intended to make you part of this, Jim.”

He drew her into his arms and held her against him, kissing her forehead. “I would have wanted to go.”

She sighed. “They really do need that medicine.”

“I know. So let’s get organized and do this. We’ll be back home before you know it.”

Jim woke feeling pain everywhere. All around him the shuttlecraft filled with smoke from the fire that had apparently started the minute the shuttle had crashed. He unconnected his seat belt and scrambled from his chair.

He checked Helen, who had been in the pilot’s seat next to him. Half of her face had been battered in from the crash. There was no pulse.

“Sorry, Helen,” he whispered.

A quick check of the others revealed he was the only survivor. He knew he had to contact the ship but his first task was to remove himself from the shuttlecraft before he succumbed to smoke inhalation.

His left leg was bleeding pretty badly and his head was killing him, but he made it to the door, which was twisted and bent. There was a hole at the top not big enough to fit through. Jim, coughing and wheezing, tried the controls and then manually to open the door.

Nothing.

“Damn, damn, damn.”

He glanced up at the hole, feeling weaker by the minute. He had no choice. He’d have to use his last strength to do it.

A moment later, he shifted into cat form, leapt on to the bar of the twisted door, and then out the hole, onto the planet.

Spock spotted the dark pink heart-shaped box on the dining room table as soon as he shrugged off his coat and hung it up on the peg by the door.

Since he knew the box was not from him, Spock approached it, expecting it to be addressed to him, most likely. Though Jim knew Spock seldom indulged in chocolate, his mate could be incorrigible at times. So he leaned down to read the attached tag.

“Be Mine, Vanik.”

He sighed inwardly. Now the pest was giving Valentine’s Day gifts to Spock’s boyfriend. Yes, he was a child and was no real threat. Still Spock might have to have a word with him. He had long suspected his nephew had a crush on Jim and it was hard to blame him. Jim was uncommonly delightful.

But boundaries must be set.

“Oh, hey. You’re home.”

Jim appeared from the bedroom and gave Spock a welcoming smile and a kiss. “Got any ideas what you want for dinner?”

“Perhaps we can go out. It is two days until Valentine’s Day and I would rather not deal with the crowds on that day.”

“Are you actually going to take me to a nice dinner?”

“You do not want that?”

“No, I’d love that, I’m just surprised.” Jim’s gaze went to the heart. “You looked?”

Spock sniffed. “It was hard not to when I find that my mate has a box of candy that is not from me.”

Jim laughed. “You can’t possibly be jealous.”

“No?”

“No. And besides that heart box isn’t for me.”

Spock frowned. “Who is it for?”

“Vanik has a crush at school and he wants to give her that. But he didn’t like his handwriting and asked me to do it for him. He’s picking it up in the morning.”

“Oh.” Spock’s ire deflated.

“Were you really jealous of your own nephew?” Jim looked far too amused at Spock’s expense but then Spock experienced that often enough.

“Not…truly.”

Jim threw his arms around Spock’s neck. “I love you.”

“And I love you. Be mine.”

“I’m always yours.”

“Well that wasn’t exactly how I thought Valentine’s Day would go,” Jim Kirk said to his best friend, Leonard “Bones” McCoy.

“Yeah, yeah.” Bones smirked. “You expected to get laid at least two or three times.”

Jim shot him a look. “Once would have been enough. Who knew they would raid that club?”

“I did. Well, maybe not this exact night, but that club’s been crazy and asking for it for months. All that illegal shit going on there. Just be glad they didn’t lock us up and we’re leaving the station and able to go home.”

Jim sighed as they went through the double doors the Federation Police Department and back out to the fresh air. Sort of fresh air. There was a little bit of sewer smell drifting their way.

“I don’t think they arrested any patron except that dude in the back.”

“And its no wonder. I did say we should cross that place off our list.”

“The Federation’s done that for us now.” It was too bad too because Jim wore a red t-shirt and he looked good in red.

“I’m actually surprised you wanted to go to a club.” Bones turned at the end of the pathway toward Starfleet Academy and their dorm.

“Why?”

He shrugged. “I sorta thought you were seeing that Vulcan.”

“Spock?”

“You know any others?” Bones snorted. “Maybe you do. After all you spent a summer there.”

“Hottest damn summer I ever spent.” Jim grinned. “In more ways than one, I might add.”

“Wish you wouldn’t.”

Jim laughed. “Anyway, I haven’t heard from him. Not since the last time.”

“You will.”

“Maybe.”

They turned to other subjects until they got to their dorm. There standing at the door was Spock holding a dozen red roses.

Jim smiled. “Are those for me?”

Spock arched a brow. He looked vaguely annoyed, no doubt from having stood outside waiting for who knew how long. “They are not for Doctor McCoy.”

“Awe, man, way to hurt me, Spock.” Bones rolled his eyes, went past the two of them, and into the dorm room.

“Been waiting long?”

“Long enough. I was about to leave.”

“Sorry. I was at the police station.”

“Do I wish to know?”

Jim smiled and took the roses. “Nope. But my Valentine’s Day just got a heckuva lot better. Your place?”

“Unless you intend to give the doctor a show…yes.”

“No shows.” He linked his arm with Spock’s. “Perhaps a private one for you. I’m wearing red silk briefs with pink hearts on them.”

Spock shook his head. “Of course you are.” He frowned. “You were not expecting me, why are you wearing—’

“Better not to ask.”

Spock sighed and led Jim away from the Academy campus and to his apartment. A very good Valentine’s Day for Jim.

We’re closing February and love month with OMS

“You’re half Human, haven’t you got any goddamn feelings about that?”

The angry, irritated words spoken by Jim during the recent crisis stuck in Spock’s memory, like an old song playing over and over in your head.

Perhaps it should not bother him. He was a Vulcan after all.

He’d gone through the “trial” standing beside his comrades while they were judged, Jim being demoted back to Captain. Jim had been pleased, so Spock accepted this. Had it upset Jim, Spock would have argued against it.

Spock had spoken to his father before his father left to return to Vulcan and they had parted…well. A definite improvement from the past.

And still the way things had been left between himself and Jim nagged at him.

Jim had left his side to speak with the president of the Federation, but when he was finished, he once more found Spock.

He smiled faintly at him. “I’m starved, but I don’t really feel like going to a restaurant and being on display. The, uh, the apartment is nearby. Wanna go there?”

Spock inclined his head in agreement. He noted that Jim didn’t say “my apartment”, so Spock suspected it was a mutually shared residence from their time together. His memories were returning, albeit more slowly than any of them would have liked.

The air was chilled and they wore only their uniforms, having not prepared with overcoats. He was glad that Jim kept up a brisk pace.

Once inside, Jim ordered the heat on and Spock was grateful for the immediate warmth.

“Tea?” Jim asked.

“Indeed, but I will attend to it.”

Jim followed him into the small but efficient kitchen, and Spock noted the familiarity there. Yes, he’d been there like this with Jim many times.

But he also noticed Jim watching him, a contemplative look in his eyes.

“What is it?” Spock asked. He returned his attention to his task of preparing his tea.

“Is something wrong, Spock?”

“Wrong, Cap…Jim?”

Jim blew out a long breath and leaned on the counter next to where Spock stood.

“Just…I don’t know.”

Spock pursed his lips. “I have been thinking about what you said during the mission. Are you angry with me?”

“Angry?”

Spock turned to him. “You seemed displeased with my reaction to certain events regarding the possible destruction of Earth.”

For a moment Jim’s frown was one of confusion, but then his expression cleared, and he shook his head.

“I’m not angry, Spock. I wasn’t then. Just…frustrated and irritated. Sometimes…I can’t help myself. It wasn’t any reflection on you.”

“Yet you used a colorful metaphor.”

“I did,” Jim admitted. “Ah, and I’m sorry about that. Like I said I was frustrated by the situation.”

“And my lack of reaction to it.”

“True. Sometimes, I forget, Spock, that you don’t react the same as me to what’s going on. I lashed out at that time because of that, but I’m not angry with you at all. I’m-“ He smiled faintly. “I’m grateful for you. And every moment I get to spend with you is special.”

Spock felt warmth blossom in his side, and he was, admittedly, in eminent danger of an illogical display of emotionalism. He looked at the tea before him to get control.

But then Jim touched his arm and that control eluded him.

“Spock,” Jim whispered.

Spock turned and allowed himself to be pulled into Jim’s embrace. Jim’s warm Human arms held him tight, and Spock felt love. Both loving Jim and having that love be returned.

Flash Fic, February 25, 2022

Jim had the best idea. Or so he thought.

There was a ship-wide malfunction that was causing all sorts of problems with temperature control. His quarters were steaming hot and he could not lower them. Spock’s was icy cold.

He came up with the brilliant idea of going to Spock and telling him they should share Spock’s bed to keep each other warm.

Okay, yeah it was a blatant way of getting into bed with the Vulcan, but Jim had been hinting for weeks that they should act on their mutual attraction, assuming Jim was accurate in that assessment, and either Spock was being deliberately obtuse or Jim was being way too subtle.

This malfunction had been fortuitous.

“Hey Spock, I have an idea.”

“What is that, Captain?”

And Spock looked absolutely adorable. He had wrapped himself in several layers to ward off the cold in his quarters. He even wore a knit cap to cover his ears.

Jim smiled faintly and pointed to it. “Where’d you get that?”

“Nyota presented it to me. I believe she made it herself.”

“Cute.”

“You were saying, Captain?”

“Right. Since your quarters are so cold and mine are so blasted hot—”

“You are suggesting we exchange quarters until the situation is repaired?”

Jim closed his mouth.

Spock nodded. “That is a brilliant suggestion. The heat will not bother me at all. In fact, I will relish it. And since you are often too warm, you will be reasonably comfortable here. I must say, Captain, that is the perfect solution.”

“Uh, glad you like it.” Jim deflated. Well, hell. That was stupid. He should have guessed Spock would think he meant that. Honestly, maybe he should have meant that.

And as he watched, Spock prepared to gather his belongings to temporarily switch quarters with Jim.

In his head he could hear Finnegan’s voice, “Yeah, Jimmy, you’re an idiot.”

Yes, he was.

As soon as they’d made the exchange, Jim felt even worse. Sure, he was usually a lot warmer than Spock, but Spock’s quarters still felt like he’d be bedding down in an igloo.

He couldn’t stand it.

“Ah, Bones, how would you like a roomie?”

****

“You spent the night in Doctor McCoy’s quarters.”

Jim winced at the blatant hostile tone of Spock’s voice. He’d almost call it some sort of weird accusation if it hadn‘t been his first officer.

“Er, yeah. How did you know?”

“I went into my quarters for something I forgot and you were not there, so I asked the computer to locate you.”

Jim definitely heard some kind of attitude there. He stabbed at his pancakes as he contemplated his response to the almost angry Vulcan sitting across from him.

He shrugged. “It was cold in there and the blankets weren’t doing it.”

“Then why did you not advise me you wished to switch back?”

“I wouldn’t. You were happy to be warm. It was no big deal. Bones’ quarters are normal temp.”

“Did you share a bed?”

Jim laughed. “No. Geez. What exactly are you asking, Spock?”

Spock blushed. “I do not understand why you made the suggestion to change rooms if you would be uncomfortable.”

Jim sighed. “I didn’t.”

“What?”

“I wasn’t suggesting that. You just…assumed, so I let you think that.”

“Then what were you suggesting?”

“That I stay with you in your bed so we could huddle for warmth and uh you know, be together.” Now Jim was blushing.

Spock frowned. “Why didn’t you just say that?”

“I don’t know. You seemed eager to change quarters. I felt kind of foolish. Like I have for weeks,” Jim admitted. “I’ve been…” He licked his lips. “I’ve been trying to get you to notice me for weeks and take this-this whatever to the next level and well, I’m guessing you aren’t interested. And that’s totally okay, Spock.”

And he tried to make it okay, but honestly it would hurt, it did hurt, and he knew it. This was why he didn’t do love.

Yes, he was in love with Spock. Not just lust.

“Jim, you are not a subtle person.”

“Well, okay, but—”

“Why did you not speak plainly in your attempts to get me to notice you?”

“I guess I was trying to woo you?”

Spock arched a brow. “Consider me wooed.”

Jim closed his mouth, thought about it, and then asked, “What does that mean?”

“You will be sharing a bed with me tonight.”

“Oh.” Jim grinned. “Oh.”

Spock smiled slightly and shook his head. “It is time for shift.”

And side by side, they made their way to the bridge.

Jim looked at the sky above, noticing the increase of clouds coming in. With a frown, he noted the decline in temperature as well.

A storm was on its way and though it was a bit cliched, Jim could, in fact, feel it in his bones. Years of misuse had given him arthritis in just about every joint.

Spock still wasn’t back from his trip to San Francisco. He was expected back that evening, but with the volatile weather, Jim guessed it was possible his shuttle flight would be delayed until morning. At least. Since Jim didn’t know how long this storm that was coming would last.

He finished loading the wheelbarrow with firewood and brought it to the back door of their house. It took a few trips to get it all inside but Jim wanted to prepared to have plenty of wood for fires if Spock made it home in time. His Vulcan got cold easily and not appreciate the probable snowstorm.

He had plans for a vegetable minestrone soup for dinner too.

Jim checked his messages but there was nothing from Spock to indicate he wasn’t coming, so he decided that was a good sign. He got to work building a fire and putting the soup on.

He decided he’d lost track of time, because before he knew it, he heard the sound of a hover car just outside the house. He went to the window, and sure enough, Spock was getting out of a hover taxi, bags in hand.

Warmth blossomed in Jim’s chest as he went to the front door to greet his husband. He opened the door and drew Spock into his arms.

“You made it before the storm hit.”

“I left early for that very reason.”

Jim thoroughly kissed him. “That explains why I thought I’d lost track of the time. God, I’m thrilled you’re here. I have the fire going and soup is on.”

Spock’s lips curved as he pulled Jim in for another kiss. “I am glad to be home.”

Flash Fic, February 21, 2022

“If we actually get out of this,” Jim paused, as he fired his phasers at the village’s invaders, “we should get married.”

Spock broke his concentration to glance briefly at his captain. “What?”

“I said, if we actually get out of this, we should get married.”

“Yes, that is what you said,” Spock agreed. “You and me?”

Jim fired again. “Well, yeah, obviously.”

“Why is that obvious?”

“Who else would I mean?”

Spock stopped to fire his own phaser and then duck behind a boulder. “We are not engaged in a relationship.”

“Well, if we were married, we would be, wouldn’t we?”

“I cannot argue with that logic.”

Jim grinned. “I think you just called me logical. Coming from you that is a love confession.”

“I believe,” Spock said dryly, “I said I could not argue with you. And that is because there is no point.”

“Exactly.” Jim’s grin widened. “And by the way, I love you too.”

Spock frowned. “I did not say I love you.”

“But you do.”

“Captain—”

“Scott to Captain Kirk.”

Jim paused as he flipped open his communicator. “Go ahead, Scotty.”

“Ready to beam you and Mister Spock out now.”

“Great. Energize.”

Spock felt the disorienting sense of his particles breaking up and being transported back to the Enterprise.

He glanced at his captain as Jim stepped down and greeted Mr. Scott.

“That was a close one. Thanks, Scotty.”

“Aye, Captain. Glad to have you both safely back aboard. Admiral Lowinsky awaits your report.”

Jim nodded and turned to Spock. “Well, Commander, what’s your answer?”

Spock arched a brow. “I believe the proper response is, I do.”

There are all kinds of love, including a mother-son

Photo by RODNAE Productions on Pexels.com

It wasn’t often Jim was around for his mother’s birthday. In fact, he couldn’t even recall the last time. Vaguely he had memories as a child of celebrations surrounding it, surrounding her, but as an adult? No.

She’d told him once that since her birthday was right after Valentine’s Day, growing up she’d often had a heart-shaped cake. And so on his way to see her, he’d picked up a heart-shaped cake at the bakery. The frosting was a light pink rather than an overdyed red. He’d brought her a bouquet of flowers too,

He wondered if they’d let him bring the cake, but the stern nurse at the door just glared at him, so he figured that was as close to permission as he was going to get.

The Enterprise was in San Francisco at the moment, undergoing some needed upgrades, so her crew had a few days off. He would rather not be visiting his mother on her birthday in a Riverside hospital, but she was there, so what choice had he had?’

She’d had a small stroke, just a teeny one she had assured him, but they were keeping her there for a few days to observe.

He located room 215 and went through the open doorway. Winona Kirk sat up in her bed with her head turned to gaze out the window. It was snowing that day.

A memory flashed of her in the hospital when he was pretty young, his grandmother had brought him, and he had scrambled onto the bed, yelling, “Mommy!” before he’d been scolded to get down.

“Mom,” he spoke softly.

She turned her head to look at him and he noticed the slight droopiness of the left side of her mouth, but she smiled.

“Jimmy”

“Happy Birthday.” He held out the brightly colored tulips, her favorite. Her eyes lit up. “I know it’s not tulip season, it’s a bit early, but I found these.”

“They’re beautiful. I’ll have a nurse put them in a vase.”

He set them on a nearby table.

“A cake too.” He showed her.

“Ah, you shouldn’t have,” she protested, but he could see she was pleased.

He placed the cake next to the flowers, approached the bed, and leaned down to kiss her. He straightened.

“How are you feeling?”

“Better. Even better now that my baby is here.”

He rolled his eyes but smiled. “Not a baby.”

“I didn’t say you were a baby I said you are my baby.” She gestured to her face. “They say it’s supposed to get better. I have to do some physical therapy.”

She patted the edge of the bed and he sat there.

“I’m glad I got the chance to see for myself.”

“Me too. It’s been way too long since I got to see you. How’s life on the Enterprise?’

“Good. Still going where no one has gone before.”

“Have you got a certain someone?”

“Mom.”

“Well?”

“Maybe.”

Her eyes lit up. “You have one!

“Maybe not.”

“James Tiberius!”

He grinned and took her hand. “Just—”

“Jim?”

He rose and turned to see Spock standing in the doorway of his mother’s hospital room. “Hey, Spock, come meet my mother.”
