5 Years Earlier, Starship Endeavor
βReport.β
Jim Kirk looked up from his PADD into the questioning face of his commanding officer, Robert April.
βItβs currently too dangerous to use the transporter, Captain.β
βDamn. Rigel 9 really needs those medical supplies.β
Doctor Helen Moore bit her lip and shook her head. βAgreed. Theyβre really dealing with something down there. What about the shuttlecraft?β
βWith that Ion storm thatβs going to be risky too,β Jim stated.
βLess risky than trying to do the transporter though,β Dr. Moore said. She turned to April. βIβm a pretty good pilot, Bob. I only need a few medical personnel with me. Just two. Iβm willing to risk it.β
βHelenββ Jim began to protest.
βJim, I know what youβre going to say. But the citizens of Rigel 9 are dying and without this needed medicine, they donβt stand a chance.β
βWe wail for the storm to pass,β Jim maintained.
βAnd that could be days. They might be dead by then! Bob, I can do this.β
Captain April pursed his lips. βOkay, Helen.β
βCaptainββ
April held up his hand to cut Jim off. βYour protests are duly noted, Jim. But Helenβs right. Rigel 9 needs these supplies. But Iβm afraid Iβm going to have to ask you to go along with the party, Jim.β
βWhat?β Helen exclaimed. βNo!. Captain, I donβt need to endanger unnecessary personnel. Commander Kirkββ
βWill accompany you. Iβm not going to have a team of only trained medical crew members go into a potentially hostile situation. Commander Kirkβs an exemplary negotiator and well-trained in combat.β
βButββ
βYou both have your orders. Doctor, Commander. Get your team together and the supplies and head out.β
Jim watched Captain April depart, then he turned to Helen. βItβs okay.β
βIt is not. I never intended to make you part of this, Jim.β
He drew her into his arms and held her against him, kissing her forehead. βI would have wanted to go.β
She sighed. βThey really do need that medicine.β
βI know. So letβs get organized and do this. Weβll be back home before you know it.β
Jim woke feeling pain everywhere. All around him the shuttlecraft filled with smoke from the fire that had apparently started the minute the shuttle had crashed. He unconnected his seat belt and scrambled from his chair.
He checked Helen, who had been in the pilotβs seat next to him. Half of her face had been battered in from the crash. There was no pulse.
βSorry, Helen,β he whispered.
A quick check of the others revealed he was the only survivor. He knew he had to contact the ship but his first task was to remove himself from the shuttlecraft before he succumbed to smoke inhalation.
His left leg was bleeding pretty badly and his head was killing him, but he made it to the door, which was twisted and bent. There was a hole at the top not big enough to fit through. Jim, coughing and wheezing, tried the controls and then manually to open the door.
Nothing.
βDamn, damn, damn.β
He glanced up at the hole, feeling weaker by the minute. He had no choice. Heβd have to use his last strength to do it.
A moment later, he shifted into cat form, leapt on to the bar of the twisted door, and then out the hole, onto the planet.

Twist!! I didnβt expect that. I maybe should have for reasons but I didnβt. Nicely done!
And the plot thickens and more questions have now arisen. Canβt wait for more!

Yikes! You certainly caught me by surprise there! I was thinking β¦ who is this Helen, what rabbit hole are we going down. Jim shifted? Wow!
Now we wait for the next installment. Did I mention that Iβm not very patient. Kudos! β€οΈπππ

OMG, love the twist! I’d thought that something on the planet caused him to be changed into a cat, not that he was a shapeshifter! Really enjoying this story.

Hey, at least you didn’t say Helen was ‘toast.’ Ahem. (Too soon?)
What a great twist! I too never saw that coming, nor even imagined it.
Well, I guess Jim wasn’t actually in love with Helen. That was a very short and not lovey goodbye. No tears. Just action.
Had Jim not been a shape shifter, he’d have died too. So I’m glad. And also on pins and needles till next Friday.

Toast some yes, but since they do find some remains of the medical team in the wreckage she didn’t get burnt to dust anyway
Ouch, that sounds a bit sick LOL
I view Jim and Helen as having been close friends, not necessarily romantic. He seems to become friends with doctors LOL
Yes he wouldn’t have been able to make it out either had he not been a shifter π

I donβt recall, are you planning on putting this on ao3 when itβs completed? Iβm enjoying this story and itβs just easier to reread it there. More people should get to enjoy this. π
