July Flash Themes

Surprise! In the following days coming up for this month’s flashes you can expect Christmas in July! You will be spending time with some of our favorite versions of Jim and Spock as they celebrate.

So…beginning tomorrow…get out those Christmas tunes and Hallmark movies (or not!).

The Death Wishes

Recently, as in since this all began, the pandemic to end all pandemics (I am using humor here, please don’t think I don’t take it seriously), I decided to watch the Death Wishes. Bruce Willis had done a remake of the movie Charles Bronson did. I could watch both for free on Amazon so I did. Here are my comparisons, which I have been meaning to do for a while.

Now I can take Bruce or leave him. He’s done a couple of movies I just loved. The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable. I don’t mind Die Hard. I like Red (Karl Urban is in that and great too). But lets face it, he’s not always the greatest actor. He’s okay. And I think I’ve heard as a person he can be…challenging.

There will be massive spoilers going forward so be warned should you desire to see them.

I saw Bruce’s version first. His character is named the same as Charles’ is. Paul Kersey. But Bruce’s Kersey is a trauma surgeon in Chicago. He saves lives of gang members and the like all day long, plus good guys too. In the city. He has a very nice suburban life with a beautiful wife and almost graduating high school senior. His slightly less successful brother is played by one of my absolute favorites, Vincent D’onofrio . In the beginning Vincent’s character asks Kersey for money, which he loans him. They go out of their way at first to show that Kersey is not a touch guy with several scenes. Then he goes out to dinner with his wife, daughter, and brother. They have a nice dinner and the daughter talks about where she will go to college. The valet guy overhears where they live while they are talking as he’s getting their car and he hears them say that the next night they won’t be home as they are going out for Paul’s birthday dinner.

Believing they won’t be home, this dude, who is a scumbag criminal, arranges for him and his band of thieves to rob their house. But as it turns out, Paul being a trauma surgeon, is called in to work at the hospital that night and the birthday dinner is to be postponed. The thieves don’t know this, however, and so break in and terrorize Paul’s wife and daughter. When the wife sees they are getting rough with her daughter, she tries to intervene and one of them shoots her. They then beat the teenaged daughter until she is in a coma.

Paul and his brother end up running to where they are taken at the hospital and they are told the wife died but the daughter is in this coma. They never say she is raped, which I am grateful for, since she’s supposed to be a teenager. It’s just implied here that they beat her. (more about the rape when I get to Bronson’s).

Now for much of the rest of the movie, his daughter remains in a coma. Kersey is treating a gang member one day in the hospital and the dude’s gun falls onto the floor. He kicks it under the table to collect it later. He has gone to the police and they are having trouble solving the crime.

Anyhow, one day he sees this couple getting mugged and he ends up using the gun to save them, and thereafter, he makes it his business to find the ones who were responsible to what happened to his wife and daughter.

And he does. He gets every one of the guys responsible. And in pretty brutal ways, not gonna lie.

Now the daughter wakes up toward the end and goes home with Kersey and his brother (who paid Kersey back) and is probably the most likeable character in the movie, and as they are leaving the hospital, Kersey sees the final guy responsible. The daughter doesn’t remember much but this thug thinks she might some day so he decides to go back to Kersey’s house to kill her. But this time Kersey is ready and has her hide and he kills the thug and the cops look the other way because they feel bad they couldn’t solve the case. But they tell him stop killing people and he’s like I got them. I’m done.

Now in some ways I expected Bronson’s movie to be less brutal than Bruce’s. Because movies can do much more now than they did then. But on the other hand I realized this was still Bronson and it was still going to be brutal. It was and a few scenes actually were worse for me.

First, the 70s porn music that played throughout was just horrible. That’s a side note.

In the 1970s one, Kersey is an architect rather than a doctor and they live in New York City not Chicago. Kersey and his wife (a famous actress of the time and I can’t recall who, it wasn’t Bronson’s wife Jill though, who he did do movies with) have been vacationing in Hawaii. When they return, they go out of their way to show that Kersey is a bleeding heart liberal and thinks criminals get a bad rap and are just down on their luck.

The Kerseys have an adult daughter in this one and she is married. In this one, Kersey’s wife and daughter are spending the day together and they are seen at a local high end grocery store that delivers to their high-rise apartment. A group of “freaks” sees them. That is even what they are called on IMDB. None of the freaks are recognizable save for one, and it’s Jeff Goldblum in his very first role. Anyway, these freaks follow Kersey’s wife and daughter back to their apartment building and somehow sneak through a side door even though it’s the kind of building with a doorman.

They ring the bell of the apartment and because they are waiting for groceries to be delivered, the daughter opens the door. The freaks come in and brutally beat both women. They try to rob them but they have very little cash. They then rape the daughter. I had read that she got raped and I was hoping it wasn’t especially graphic but it was graphic enough trust me. There is one thing they do that…I can’t even say. Anyway, it’s mercifully fast and over.

But they leave the women for dead. The daughter manages to call her husband and they are taken to the hospital where the wife dies. The daughter lives but is never the same and just stares into space and is eventually committed to a mental hospital.

Kersey has the son-in-law in this one and he is whiny and annoying. The brother character in the later version is much better.

Anyway similar to the remake, Kersey begins to go after criminals and he ends up killing a lot of them and gets a reputation as a vigilante killer in the city and many people like him because of it.

Unlike the remake, the cops never figure out who the “freaks” were and neither does Kersey. So he never gets those directly responsible for what happened to his wife and daughter.

But I found Bronson’s Kersey to be surprisingly much more sympathetic. When he first starts killing muggers and the like he gets sick and hates himself for it. Feels terrible. Bruce never does. And anyway he just seemed like he had been a nicer guy.

In the end, just like in Bruce’s the cops tell him to stop killing and he says he will. But he then moves to Chicago and starts to look at criminals like he’s not done.

Now, like I said, I thought Bronson was more sympathetic, but I liked how in Bruce’s he went after the guys who actually attacked his wife and daughter rather than random thugs. The son-in-law in Bronson’s was horrible and whiny and the brother in Bruce’s was one of the best parts. I liked how the daughter recovered in Bruce’s and also because she was a teen, they didn’t go the rape route. The music in the 70s version was just awful.

I didn’t come away with hating either movie but I can’t say I loved either movie or even liked them. They weren’t the worst movies I’d ever seen, but they were, like, meh.

The Favs and The Nots

Favorites of things often change, I think. I’ve written several fics since my beginning etc and what I completely loved then, might not be in my top 5 now.

So I thought it might be fun to list my current 5 favorites of the ones I have written. And I thought it would be even more fun to look back at 5 that now make me cringe a bit (not sure if I can or should explain why)

Favorites (not in any order) and these are only a few

The Finer Things

Potions

The Strange Vulcan

You Were Meant for Me

Didn’t We Almost Have it All?

Fics that make me cringe a bit (also not in any order and I don’t hate them)

The Orion Conference

Aftermath (I will tell you why for this one. I held back on doing something in this story because someone asked me not to, and to me personally, not having done that part, weakened my intent a bit for this story. I think most would disagree with me though)

The Sight

Kris’ Birthday Flash 03/19/2020

Written well before all of the happenings….

Spock straightened from his station as he became aware of the little huff of breath coming from the captain’s station. He became somewhat alarmed when he watched as the captain sagged deep into the chair, almost to the point he would surely fall off.

“Captain?” Spock approached out of concern.

“Uhh.” Jim kind of undulated up and gave Spock a rather incomprehensible look.

“You do not look well.”

“Gee, thanks.”

Spock withheld a sigh. “I suggest I escort you to the medbay. Your shift has ended anyway,” he pointed out.

Jim did accompany him to onto the turbolift, but once inside he acted predictably. “I’m not going to the medbay, Spock. I’m fine. Nothing that a long hot water shower won’t fix.”

“You do not look well,” he repeated.

“So you said. I know all of this is very new between us but that’s not the way to win my heart.” He was smiling crookedly. Spock assumed, to indicate he was joking. Humans were fond of joking and Jim in particular.

It was indeed new between them. Two nights ago, after a heated argument, they ended up having rather wild, intense sex. Tonight was to be their first planned date. No doubt why the captain refused to go to the medbay.

The turbolift doors opened onto the deck with their quarters and Jim got out. Spock followed. He followed Jim right into the captain’s quarters.

Jim merely glanced at him and started pulling off his uniform shirts. “I have to get a shower before our date, Spock.”

“Captain, considering you are unwell, I surmise that our date is…off.”

At that, Jim froze and frowned at him. “What? What do you mean off? This is supposed to be like the official start.”

Spock went to him and put his hands on Jim’s arms. “Jim, considering the last two night’s activities we have engaged in, I believe our official start has already come to past.”

“Yes, but…”

“Ashal-veh, my concern is for your welfare and you are not feeling well. I can plainly see.”

Jim deflated before his eyes. “I wanted it to be perfect.”

“Any time spent with you is, as far as I am concerned. If you do not wish to be subjected to the medbay, may I suggest you prepare for bed, get in, and allow me to tend to you. Doctor McCoy can make a ‘house-visit’ as they say.”

Jim blew out a breath. “I do feel kind of crappy. I’m sorry.”

“You owe me no apology. I am sorry that our plans have been postponed. However, I am pleased to be able to spend time with you anyway I can.”

Jim smiled. “You’re almost perfect.”

Spock raised a brow. “Almost?”

“Close to it.” Jim sagged against him. “You win. I’ll get into bed.”

And Jim turned to get into his pajamas, which were little more than shorts and a beat up, stained T-shirt. Once he had done so, Spock stepped forward and helped him get into bed, even fluffing up his pillows.

“You feel warm. Perhaps a fever?”

“Maybe. Are you going to be bored in here with me like this?”

Spock shook his head. “No. I will work on reports and labs. But first the doctor will come to check on you.”

“Do I have to?” Jim asked, jokingly.

“I am afraid so.” Spock brushed his fingers along Jim’s. “I will bring you tea.”

“Thanks. For, you know, everything.”

“Rest, Jim. I will take care of you.”

Always.

Ramblings 02/04/2020

If you aren’t bored with my stupid updates, here’s another! LOL

Did I tell you that we had a film crew on our premises on Friday? We have a shaped lawn outside our building and they wanted to film there. So we had a ton of crew and stuff all day Friday. They also set up their catering trucks, etc. Alas it was not for a movie starring Chris Pine or Tom Hanks or anyone. It was a lawnmower commercial. Still it was pretty cool to watch them.

I have finished all flashes for March now. Lucky you, you are getting Wednesdays and Fridays in March as well. Not sure about April yet. I do have a flash in mind for April 01, which is a Wednesday, and I may just go ahead and get that written and scheduled too. Keep in mind many of these are necessarily short for sanity’s sake.

Still need to do the Leap story.

After that’s finished, my plan is to get an update done for one of the two stories I have left that hasn’t been updated since November 2019, then I will fully immerse myself in the Bang story.

Right this minute I have no concrete plans for this coming weekend, so I hope that is a good thing for me. I could stand some writing time.

Tomorrow is the first February flash.

I preliminarily did my taxes and am getting about $900 back. That will be gone in a flash on bills, etc. And I haven’t yet filed, but wanted to see what I could expect.

In other news they have decided to replace the third person at my job who does it, so that was good news. No one has been hired, yet, as they just got approval, but it’s nice to know we will get that relief eventually.

Plugging Right Along

As of now, I have only two more things to write for February, as all flashes but the one for February 28th are written and scheduled. I have that one to do as well as the sequel to Every Four Years, my Leap Year story.

I updated The Vulcan Who Fell to Earth as everyone knows. Next week I will try to update Cadet Ashayam.

I haven’t started writing my T’hy’la Bang story yet, but hope to at some point soon. I’d like to have the February stuff done before I even begin to tackle it.

I re-posted the lyrics for my perfect Spirky Spock Love Song if anyone wants to check it out. That’s gotta be a fic title one of these days.

Today is the Lunar New Year, so we decided it would be fun to have a Chinese food fest tonight so the cousin is coming for that. M is making the food and there will be wine for me. HA.

Ramblings, January 14, 2020

Here are some pictures from January including a very lazy cat.

January Trees
Different Colors of Leaves
Luna sleeping in

I’m behind schedule at the moment. I’ll throw something together to post as a flash for Friday but I haven’t done it yet.

Sunday I went to drop something off at the sister’s house and we got to doing some wine drinking and before I knew it I was three sheets to the wind. I didn’t barf, but Monday I woke with a bitch of a hangover. I even called out sick and pretty much spent the day vegging and watching youtube videos of which I am not proud. But it put me behind on updates.

Before I get to working on finishing The Space in My Bed, I will get that flash done.

Last week we saw Jumanji 2 and I quite liked it. Very cute and amusing. Tonight is Star Wars.

Still haven’t gotten back to normal food and financial wise after the holidays but I am working on it.

Special Calendar

A present to myself this year was a special-order calendar. It finally came today (via New Zealand and I suspect most of these were posters from the films in New Zealand) but it’s way cool and I figured you’d appreciate it.

Yes. Every movie. Pretty damn cool, huh?

Flash Fic Friday 01/03/2020

For January, we are back to Flash Fic Fridays. In February I will add back in Wednesday Flashes.

Spock should not have been surprised to look down and see Vanik standing beside him as he checked himself in the mirror in the bathroom of his apartment. It was becoming all too common to find the boy nearby. He was fond of his nephew, but he would not be all that unhappy when Sybok and Anoria took their leave of Earth with their precocious son in tow.

And yet…he was surprised. Illogically.

“What are you doing here?” he demanded.

“I have come to learn what progress you are making with Jim.”

Spock eyed him balefully. “That is not your business.”

“I believe that it is. Since I am the one who first introduced you to Jim…”

“We became acquainted with Mister Kirk on the same day.”

“And I arranged for your first date.”

“It was an outing, not a date. And you tricked us.”

Vanik shrugged. “You were getting nowhere on your own. Which is why I am inquiring as to whether you require my assistance again. You have now been on no less than four dates with Jim, not counting the sleigh ride.”

“We rode in a carriage, not a sleigh,” Spock pointed out. “An expensive one at that. It was false advertising.”

“There would be no place in San Francisco to pull a one horse open sleigh so improvisation was required,” Vanik said simply. “Jim did not seem to mind.”

“As he is your elder and you are barely acquainted, you, perhaps, should refer to him as Mister Kirk.”

“On the contrary, he told me when we met his name was Jim. He has not rescinded the personal use of his name.” Vanik paused. “To either of us. Are you scheduled to have a date with him this evening?”

Spock sighed. “Yes. I am preparing for it now.”

“That is good news. Have you had opportunities to exchange implications of favorable softer emotions?”

Spock blinked, feeling somewhat dizzy with such a convoluted sentence.  “I am quite sure that is not your business. Nor is any of the specific details of my interactions with Jim.”

Vanik frowned. “But you do…like him?”

He hesitated only a moment. “Yes.”

“And he likes you?”

It was on the tip of Spock’s tongue to advise the boy to direct that question to Jim, but then he realized Vanik would, and Jim certainly didn’t need to have the boy pestering him with personal inquiries.

“Yes,” Spock replied instead.

He was saved from further invasive inquiry by the blurp of Vanik’s communication device. The boy flipped it open and Spock heard Anoria’s voice.

“Vanik! You ran off again. Get back here right this instant.”

“I am with Uncle…”

“I know where you are. Stop bothering Spock. Come back to the hotel immediately.”

“I will be there soon.” Vanik closed his device and nodded at Spock. “I must go. I hope you have a most productive date with Jim.”

Spock did not reply as his nephew scampered off. Instead he looked at his colognes that had been gifts from his brother and sister-in-law just this past holiday season. He chose one and splashed it on himself.

Then he turned away from the mirror to prepare to retrieve Jim for their date.
