And so it begins. Wednesdays and Fridays all month. Enjoy!
PS. I know it’s Jay’s birthday but I am sorry to say I just didn’t have time to get a separate fic written, my apologies. Looks like Over Time will be finished in early August, anyway. Happy Birthday Jay!

βThis is the first day.β
Jim did not look up from his PADD when Vanik spoke. Jim was sitting in the office area of the apartment he shared with Spock studying for a really important test. He vaguely wondered how Vanik got there. He hadnβt let him in and Spock wasnβt there. He did not need to deal with the pest just then.
βFirst day of what?β he asked absently.
βChristmas in July.β
Now Jim did look up. βExcuse me?β
βItβs July the first.β
βRight. Uh. Vanik. Wait, howβd you get in?β He shook his head. βNever mind. I donβt want to know. Because then I will be forced to tell Spock.β
βWhen do the celebrations begin?β
βCelebrations? Look. Thatβs not really how it works. Itβs not really until July the twenty-fourth or so. You know around the real time for Christmas and Christmas Eve five months later. Itβs just sort of a wow, itβs only five months until Christmas thing. Itβs now less than half a year. It began in a summer camp in 1933. They had fake snow and trees and Santa even.β
Vanik nodded. βCorrect. But over the many years since others have expanded on the time to celebrate βChristmas in Julyβ. I would like us to be one of them. If you will recall we did something last year.β
βDid we? Well, even if we did, Vanik, I just donβt have time right now. Maybe later in the month, but I have this big test.β
βI am certain you will ace it as usual, Jim.β
βRight. But you know itβs a little hot to be dashing through the snow anyway.β
βActually, that song originated as a Thanksgiving song.β
Jim rolled his eyes and went back to reading on his PADD. He hoped that would clue Vanik in that he needed to leave.
βDid you know that?β
βNot only is the answer no, I also donβt care.β
βI brought a Santa, a reindeer and a jingle bell.β
Jim looked up at him again. βYou what?β
βCookie cutters. I thought a pleasurable way to begin the month of Christmas in July was for us to engage in Christmas cookie making.β
Jim blinked at the boy, then sighed. He knew defeat when he saw it. So much for not believing in no-win scenarios.
βTell you what. You go into the living room and sit quietly on the couch for a whole hour and let me study in peace for that time. And when that hour has passed, weβll make those cookies. Deal?β
Vanik nodded enthusiastically. βDeal.β
Jim looked at him with skepticism. βYou think you can be quiet for that long?β
βIt will be a challenge but I am up for it. Especially if it means making Christmas cookies with you.β
Jim smiled, patted the boyβs bowl cut, and shooed him away.
It would take a miracle for him to pass this test at this rate.

Vanik!
Awesome choice to kick things off with the precocious and incorrigible kid. Iβve always adored him and his interactions with Jim especially. He brings a smile to my face.
Loved this! Fantastic.
And happy birthday to Jay!

Awww – Happiest Birthday Jay!! β¨ ππππΎβ€οΈπ β¨
I love the reindeer cookie best! Mine would all look like the gingerbread man with the deformed foot.
“He knew defeat when he saw it. So much for not believing in no-win scenarios.” – I giggled out loud at that line!
I always enjoy Vanik soooooooooooo much. He can come on over here and I’ll bake deformed foot cookies with him any time!
I find myself thinking of him as real sometimes! LOL Silly me. But then, in my head, they’re all real, in San Francisco through the time machine. (Just not the Vulcan destroyed part. Or even Romulus destroyed by the nova part.)
And they’re all happy. In the world of my mind.
And Vanik is the happiest!
Yay for doing this for us in spite of overtime. (I admit, at the very top when you said ‘Over Time’ would be finished by August, I started thinking…but I don’t remember a fic named Over Time – is that one Jay requested? I know, I know. I hadn’t had coffee yet. I’m old, that’s about all you can expect outa me first thing every morning. Literally took me at least 3 minutes till it hit me, duh! And I got coffee then.)

Vanik has proven to be a very popular original character for me, even more so than the original little boy I wrote for them that became their adopted son from early fics. I love to write him with Jim in particular though I am not sure why! The little twisted foot is cute

Perhaps because Jim met Vanik before he met Spock? And their interactions were first and so darling and different from Spock’s with Vanik.

I’m guessing that’s definitely a huge part of it

Making Christmas cookies together sounds awesome. Now I want sugar cookies! Iβm sure Jim will ace the test! Doesnβt he always?!
Will Vanik return during Christmas in July ? He always makes me smile.
Hope you enjoy your weekend and the 4th of July!
