Christmas in July, Post 6.5

This is an AU where Spock joins Jim in his San Francisco high school (in this little flash, Jim lives with his mom there, rather than in Riverside, though I don’t explicitly state any of this). Just a little extra something.

β€œYou go ask him.”

β€œAre you crazy? I’m not doing it.”

Heavy sigh.

β€œCome on, Jimmy. You’re the only one he kind of likes.”

Jim eyed the kid who’d said that. Sandy was his name. Short for Alexander.

β€œOh, that guarantees my success,” Jim replied, sarcastically. β€œI’ll start with that. β€˜oh, hey, new guy, since you almost like me, at least more than any of the rest, could you…”

β€œJust do it, Kirk.” It was always the girls who thought they were tough. And it was one of them that had just shoved him toward the new guy.

Jim stuck his hands in his pockets, gave one last derisive look to his so-called friends, and sauntered up to the picnic table where the new guy sat, nose in a book. A paper one.

He cleared his throat but that got him nothing.

Jim scowled in his friends direction when he heard the snicker. He sat down then across from the guy.

β€œSo…Vulcan, huh?”

Great opening line there, Jimmy. No wonder he’s still ignoring you.

β€œYou’re the new guy.”

Very slowly dark eyes rose up to stare at him. They made Jim shiver.

β€œI know who I am,” he said. β€œWho are you?”

So much for the theory he kind of liked Jim if he didn’t even know his name.

β€œJim. Uh. Kirk.”

β€œIs it Jim or is it Kirk?”

β€œBoth. Jim Kirk. Like you know, a last name. What’s yours?”

β€œSpock.”

β€œSpock what? Or, um, what Spock?”

β€œJust Spock.”

Jim nodded. β€œLike um, Cher or Charo. Like that.”

β€œI have no idea who they are.”

Jim laughed a little. β€œI don’t know them either.”

β€œThen why mention them?”

β€œThey’re from, you know, like the past. Long past I just thought…well that compared to Spock. Just Spock.”

Spock stared at him.

Jim shifted. β€œUm, so, want to join the Glee Club?”

β€œThe what?”

β€œGlee Club. We sing. We’re about to do a holiday concert.”

β€œHoliday.”

β€œUh-huh. We’re planning on singing Hark the Herald for one.”

β€œI am not familiar with that.”

β€œOh come on. You’ve got to know that. It’s famous. Also gonna sing Santa Claus is Coming to Town.”

β€œGoing to.”

Jim nodded.

Spock put his book down. β€œWhat I mean is, you are not speaking properly. It’s β€˜going to sing Santa Claus is Coming to Town. Not gonna.”

Jim scowled. β€œI know proper grammar, dude.”

β€œIt is most curious then as to why you do not use it.”

β€œAre you going to join the Club or not?”

Spock leaned back. β€œWhat else are you going to sing?”

β€œCouple other Christmas songs. And some for Hanukkah. The usual stuff you sing at these kinds of concerts. You get extra credit if you join. Don’t worry if you sing like a frog. So does Ralph and he’s still a member.”

β€œI do not sing like a frog.”

Jim shrugs. β€œI didn’t mean anything by it. Well? What do you say?”

Spock didn’t respond at first. He finally said, β€œAnd you are in this Glee Club?”

He smiled. β€œYep. Glee Club President.”

β€œWhat does a Glee Club president do?”

β€œAsk others to join,” Jim joked.  β€œWell, whaddya say?”

β€œSince you clearly need help with your education, Jim Kirk, I will assist you with your club.”

Jim held up his hand for a high five. Spock stared at his hand.

β€œYou’re supposed to hit me.”

β€œWhy would I strike you?”

β€œNot me, dummy. My hand.”

β€œIsn’t it part of you?”

β€œNow see. I think, maybe, we can help each other out, Spock. You can teach me to speak proper grammar and I can teach you how to be a real person on Earth.”

β€œA real person.”

β€œYep. You’re here going to school right now cause your pop’s the ambassador dude, right?”

Spock gave him a look. β€œI suppose the answer is affirmative.”

Jim grinned. β€œAll right then, Spock. Stick we with me. It’s gonna be great.”

Jim turned around and gave the thumbs up to his friends.

β€œWhat is the meaning of that gesture? Is it obscene?”

He laughed. β€œNah. That’s this one.” Jim showed him. β€œBut never mind. Come on. It’s time for Jim Kirk Course One.”

β€œWhen do we rehearse the songs?”

Jim liked that Spock got up from the picnic table and followed him.

β€œTomorrow afternoon. But today, you’re just going to hang out with me and benefit from the experience.”

That earned him an eyebrow raise, but Jim slung an arm around Spock’s shoulders and led him away from his group of friends.  Jim wanted Spock to himself.

β€œNow, the song goes, Hark the Herald Angels Sing…”

Oh so cute. I love the dichotomy between them. The clear oppositeness. And yet there’s a connection. Fantastic!

This is positively wild! I have a million thoughts. But mostly, what a surprise. You scared me.
I woke up thinking, it’s Thursday, no new CIJ today.
    And then there was one.
You gotta warn me, dude. Senility runs in the family, and I’m kind of like Fred Foxx was about heart attacks – is this the BIG one???? I lost a day. It’s Friday. Ok – I need to make new plans.
You forget who this reader is!
Then I saw 6.5. And I checked my computer that CLEARLY said it’s Thursday.
So I thought – uh oh. It’s IVAN who’s clearly lost it. But how do I break it to you gently?
And then I drank some coffee and realized neither of us is losing it. Or at least, THIS isn’t the proof anyway.
So…..thank you. I’ll just leave it with a thank you. And the knowledge this Jim and Spock so much remind me of cartoons of young, HS age Jim and Spock – I saw those images all the way through it, especially when Jim threw his arm around Spock. I mean, how much surprise can this Vulcan process in one day???
(Wonder if he could bring his lyre in to accompany? Or even…learn the banjo????)
    LOL

What’s truly amazing is that I re-read this thirty million times and only just caught that I wrote they were seeking Hark the Herald instead of “singing”.
I really HAVE lost it. I know those cartoon/comics you speak of and I am flattered you are reminded of them here. Ha I thought I’d throw you all off with an extra and I see it worked πŸ™‚

I “might” revisit these two cuties in the real Christmas stuff in December.

HA I just caught the “banjo”

“All those in favor, say aye!”

        “AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!”
Motion passes unanimously. (I’m totally positive I heard everyone’s voice.)

        OR

I can do it the way our University choir president, who was music director at a local Baptist church, would say any time we had a vote:

“All those in favor say Aye.”

        “Aye.”

“All those opposed, and of course there are none!” 😁😁😁

He was a hoot. Spock wouldn’t get any of his humor. And yeah, you’d be surprised he wasn’t really kidding!
