Jim opened his eyes slowly. It kind of hurt to do so. He stared up at the ceiling.
Shit, the Medbay.
He didn’t remember how…
“Captain.”
Jim turned his head to see Spock standing beside the bed. Wearing a gold shirt. And a yeoman handed Spock a PADD.
“Need your review, Captain.”
“I will look at it later,” Spock replied. “Leave it for me.”
Jim frowned.
Spock approached. “Jim, I am relieved.”
“Spock…”
Spock put his hands on Jim’s face, leaned down and kissed him thoroughly. “Adun, I am glad you are awake. Doctor? My husband is awake.”

I just kept looking at that gif of Spock in the gold shirt before I even read the story. ❤️
I’m thinking Jim was out of commission or missing off the ship entirely for quite a while before he got rescued. Otherwise they wouldn’t have temporarily reassigned Spock as Captain. I’m thinking there was a great possibility in the minds of the admiralty that Jim was not going to recover. The yeoman calling Spock Captain and handing him reports to sign, just emphasizes how routine it’s become that Spock is the Captain. Otherwise Spock would just be in his blue shirt awaiting his husband’s recovery.
Spock saying: “Jim, I am relieved,” has a twofold meaning. Relief, as in turning command back to Jim although Spock will technically do the job functions while Jim is in Medbay… and relief, in that Spock can finally have his mind at ease over Jim’s condition snd revovery.
How do you pack so much story into so few words!? You seriously should be a college professor teaching creative writing!

Your comment made me think – that’s EXACTLY how it would be if our president became incapacitated and unknown whether they would recover, and the VP had to become president during that time.

Yeah, I was jarred there with Spock in gold, too, trying to figure out ahead of time what was going on. Because Spock never changed out of blue in 2009 when he was acting captain. Or did he? Because Pike clearly said, ” I’m not the Captain, you are” when he went to Nero’s ship. But I THINK things were chaotic enough Spock never changed shirts.
Anyway, yeah, that’s AWESOME that when Jim woke up, Spock didn’t call him captain, but Jim. His husband.
So perfect!

No he never changed. But I wrote this in mind as an alternate scenario where Spock was always the captain and Jim his first officer, etc instead of vice versa (that’s what I was thinking when writing) but it is interesting how others create their own stories. I think that’s awesome!

I just thought of something I never really honed in on before. When Pike told Spock he was captain, he didn’t say “acting captain” – though Spock did call himself “acting captain” in his log, as did Jim in his log on the frozen planet. And funny how snide Nyota didn’t say to Spock, “I hope you know what you’re doing…Captain” the way she glared and said to Jim when Spock stepped down.
She really is a …you know. And I’m all mad all over again about her!

Theoretically she was pissed that Jim just bested her “boyfriend” (I think I just threw up) but we all know she was just a Bitch ha ha

I was wondering if I had somehow missed a scene or an extended edition screen that ended up on the proverbial cutting room floor, with Spock in a gold shirt. Kudos to the anonymous gif maker. Didn’t think of Spock being the captain to begin with. 🤷🏻♀️ I guess I just see Jim as always being the Captain!
