His first officer lay still as a corpse on the biobed and Jim was very much afraid of the reason for that. He wanted to see if Spock was cold to the touch, but didn’t want to get close enough to do so for fear he’d find out exactly why.
It made no sense.
But when did Jim ever make sense?
A hundred scenarios ran through his head as he watched Bones work on him. All the ways he could have told Spock exactly how he felt. Never had. And maybe now, never could.
“Bones?”
“He’s in a healing trance.”

Arghhh! Let me pick up the broken pieces of my heart! Now just maybe Jim will tell Spock how he feels about him! This is your chance Jim.
Lots of emotions in this little fic! ❤️💚😘🖖

thanks! I made this one vague about whether it was TOS or AOS because I felt the situation could be either!

So good! Yeah, I too got a little worried there.
Jim at that time apparently didn’t even know Vulcans did healing trances. Didn’t know about extra eyelids. I mean, Jim’s gonna hafta fess up his feelings and do some exploring into this guy.

indeed but I think it was implied in Operation Annihilate that Bones “forgot” he had another eyelid or didn’t know or something like that and it took M’Benga to strike Spock out of his trance and that was because he “knew” about Vulcans when apparently others didn’t.

Yeah, when I really think about it, that’s ANOTHER discrepancy in ST writing. A starship doctor would need to be highly trained on ALL species of beings working there, because they’re THEIR doctor too. And Bones was CEO. He would be the most highly trained. And “old country doctor” bit is cute to say, but Starfleet was for training doctors too, in all species. Not just boy scout first aid. So of course, if there was really an Enterprise and a Bones, he would absolutely know all about humans and Vulcans and anyone else he treated. Like Bones in AOS, he’d be trained to treat Keenser and the Teenaxi they kept on board.
And the extremely brilliant Spock who knows more about Earth history than even the Humans do, as he quotes or explains Earth stuff to the captain and other officers ALL the time, would not forget his eyelid.
Just crummy writing. But then – each writer has their priorities, I guess.
Still it’s a HUGE insult to Dr. McCoy the way he’s on the flagship of the fleet and yet duh, doesn’t know anything about Vulcan physiology.

Very true but at the time I never even thought about it. One of the problems is they had different people writing episodes, in a lot of modern TV writing they have a writing team that hopefully deals with continuity a little more. But hell one of my favorite 80s shows, The Golden Girls, changed things they had just written in the prior season. It’s maddening.
But yes, Bones would know, or certainly should!

Oh, me neither. When I was 13-16 for the original series, I never even thought further than, oh aren’t Bones and Spock cute bickering at each other. That’s before I grew up and learned about military protocol and respect and training and realized how absolutely abhorrent it was for officers to talk that way – they’d be court martialed and thrown into military prison for it IRL. Kirk is ALWAYS saying they have their orders, or a crew member has their orders. Gene being former Air Force, it’s beyond me he thought – oh yeah, we’ll have them obeying normally one week and treat each other like absolute crap the next.

(Especially that line “his heart is where his lung should be.” REALLY? Now they write Bones to decide ALL species’ hearts should be in a certain place? There are humans who are born with their heart on the right side instead of left. I would think if there is life all through space, they may not even have the same organs we have, much less do they “belong” in a certain place in their body. I’m laughing at Undiscovered Country when Kirk kicks a large guy in the knees and he falls down groaning loudly for a long time, and Martia says, “Not everybody keeps their genitals in the same place.”

Well sure because every species should be like a human you know lol
By the movies they had realized that would not be the case!
