This Jim might beat all Jims for being incredibly obtuse

They were getting a rare bit of shore leave. And on Risa, of all places. But Jim didnβt feel at all happy about it. Partying hard was the last thing he wanted to do. More like drowning in his own sorrow.
But Jim took his rotation and made his way down to the planet surface. He spotted his favorite Risian bar right away. It was ridiculously crowded and not at all what he wanted. So Jim turned away to seek another establishment.
While he tried to figure out where to go, Jim was surprised to see Spock beaming down as heβd always told Jim he didnβt need shore leave. So being surprised, Jim invited him on instinct.
βMister Spock. Surprised to see you here.β
βIndeed, Captain.β
βIβm about to go sit and have a drink. Want to join me?β
He hesitated for the barest of maybe ten seconds, but his gaze moved beyond Jim to where Jim noticed, for the first time, Uhura stood waiting. She had changed into a blue dress with a deep vee, exposing an ample amount of her breasts. The dress had a handkerchief hem and reached down to about the middle of her calves. She had little matching blue slippers on her feet. She wore her long hair loose. She looked pretty. Ready to take on the pleasures of Risa.
Spock glanced back at Jim. βNyota and I have plans to attend the concert in the garden courtyard. Would you care to accompany us? You are welcome.β
Jim would rather eat boiled slugs. But he made myself smile and shook his head. βNah, thatβs okay. You go ahead. Enjoy the concert.β
Spock inclined his head but then said nothing further as he quickened his pace to join her. They spoke briefly about something before she linked her arm with his and they continued walking in the direction of the garden center.
For a brief time Jim had thoughtβ¦but no. Bones had said there had been trouble between them during the Krall incident. But whatever it had been had obviously been resolved.
And really, it was not Jimβs business. It never would be.
He turned away from the sight of them and kept walking until he found a fairly quiet bar. Jim sat at the far end of the bar counter and ordered two whiskey sours.
βTwo drinks when youβre drinking alone is not good.β
He glanced at his best friend and smiled. βHowβd you find me?β
Bones took the seat next to him. βFollowed the smell.β
βHa.β
He gestured to the drinks the bartender had set before Jim. βWhatβs up?β
βItβs his birthday, you know.β
Bones frowned. βWhoβs?β
Jim stared at the drinks, left them untouched for now. βSam.β He picked one up and swirled it in the glass. βOr was.β
Bones was quiet for a while. Then he said, βIβm real sorry about your brother and his wife.β
βI hadnβt seen him in years.β And yet his loss still hurt.
βHave you heard from your nephew?β
And that was weird, wasnβt it? Having a nephew but no brother.
βThis was his favorite drink.βJim took a sip.
βYouβre ignoring the question.β
βI havenβt. Itβs difficult with him being on Earth. And Aurelanβs parents are raising him now.β
Jim heard the low whine of the tricorder Bones held in his hand as it scanned him.
βBones.β
βDamn fool thing. According to this, youβre dead.β
Jim smiled slightly. βI guess you need a new one. Unless I am.β
βYou arenβt. And Iβm going to see it stays that way.β
He pushed the other whiskey sour toward Bones. βHave a drink with me for Sam.β
He picked it up and they clinked glasses, both taking a sip.
βI resented him, you know. For leaving.β
βI can imagine.β
βMostly because he got away.β Jim swallowed heavily. βHe never had to go to Tarsus either.β
βNo,β Bones agreed.
βBut he went to Deneva.βHe sighed. βBirthdays suck.β
βYeah.β
Jim finished the drink, letting it burn down his throat and then pinched the bridge of his nose. βGod, this is a shitty day.β
βWant me to get Spock?β
Jim laughed. βFor what? So he can parade his girlfriend in front of me? No thanks. I think Iβm just going back to the ship and sleep for twelve or fourteen hours.β
As Jim rose, Bones put his hand on Jimβs upper arm. βYouβre depressed.β
Jim snorted. βYou think?β
βIβm concerned, goddamn it.β
βIβll be fine, Bones.β
βJimββ
Jim hugged him then, because at the moment it really felt as though he was the only one who cared. Stupid and wrong, Jim knew. But even still.
βWhy canβt I love you instead?β Jim whispered.
He shook his head. βI wish I knew. Life doesnβt work that way.β
Jim nodded and pulled away. βNot for me. I do love you.β
Bones paused, his eyes becoming very sad. He nodded, then looked away. βI love you, too, kid.β
Jim looked at the now empty glasses on the bar. βHappy Birthday, Sam.β
****
A few days later, Jim found himself on the Observation Deck
Heβd come up here to get away from everything. The celebrations. It was Valentineβs Day and the rec room was decorated with glitzy red hearts and cherubs holding arrows. Pink frosted cakes. Bad candies with sayings written on them. It was too much to take. Especially when as he was preparing to leave anyway, he saw Uhura come in wearing dangly red heart earrings. He heard her asking people if Spock had arrived yet. That was definitely Jimβs cue to leave.
So here he stood on the Observation Deck looking out at the stars. And speaking of stars, Jim still had to file his report on that star that turned out to be an undiscovered planet. He added it to his mental to do list. Sounded like a great way to spend a night about love, when he had nothing else to do.
He sighed and crossed his arms, leaning slightly forward so his forehead touched the glass. What the hell was wrong with him? He didnβt waste time feeling sorry for himself. It never got him anywhere but more depressed. And if he didnβt knock that off, Bones was going to insist he talk or some shit.
And as if on cue the door to the room he was in slid open. He knew he should have locked it.
βWhatβs up, Bones?β Jim asked.
βI am not the doctor.β
That had him turning sharply to face Spock. His first officer was dressed casually in black slacks and a maroon sweater. Very Valentiney looking.
βUhuraβs not here, Spock.β
Spock looked slightly puzzled but then tilted his head. βI am not at present seeking to locate Nyota. I am aware of her location in the rec room.β
Jim nodded. βWhat are you doing here then? Orders from the βFleet?β
βNone that I am aware of, at present. My purpose is of a personal nature.β
Jim gave what he hoped was an encouraging smile but he feared it was not. It was Valentineβs Day. And his mind conjured up Spock asking Jim for permission to go to New Vulcan to bond with Uhura or something. And Jim would die.
Spock approached him and stood next to him, gazing out at the stars. βI trust you enjoyed your shore leave on Risa?β
So, small talk was it? Great.
βNo. Not particularly.β
βYou did not?β
βI only spent a very short time there with Bones before I went back to the ship and spent the remainder of the time catching up on sleep. How about you? Did you and Uhura enjoy the outdoor concert?β
βYes. It was stimulating.β
βStimulating,β Jim repeated. He did not want to think of what they did after they were stimulated by the concert. βSo what is it? Uhura was looking for you, so you probably want to go.β
βYou are troubled.β
That surprised Jim so much that he glanced at Spock in surprise. βExcuse me?β
βIf there is anything I can help you withββ
βDid Bones put you up to this?β Jim saw from the quick flash of guilt that was barely there in Spockβs expression that he had got it exactly right. βWell, Iβm fine. And you can tell him that too. I donβt need you running interference for him or whatever it is you are doing.β
βI just donβt wish for you to be overwhelmed.β
βOverwhelmed?β Jim repeated incredulously. βIβm not overwhelmed, Mister. And Iβd thank you to mind your own business.β
Spock straightened at that and maybe Jim ought to take it back. He didnβt know.
βI have reports. Enjoy your evening.β
Jim left the observation room with Spockβs mouth hanging open.
He almost stopped to give Bones a piece of his mind but decided he was just better off letting himself cool down and he went to his quarters instead.
Lying in the middle of the bed was a single long stemmed red rose.
A single red rose shows love.
Jim had read that somewhere.
He went to the bed and picked it up but there was absolutely no indication where it came from.
If there was one thing Jim didnβt care for it was games. He wanted people to be straight with him and not hide behind anonymity. Heβd never had a secret admirer and he wasnβt about to start. He tossed the rose in the trash.
Valentineβs Day was for fools and suckers. And Jim wasnβt about to be either one.
Okay, maybe his mood wasnβt the best. Jim could admit that.
His door chimed and he turned with a sigh.
Shipβs business would surely distract him from this ailment.
βEnter.β
When Spock stepped inside he quarters, Jim nearly ordered him out. But then caught himself. Spock was not responsible for Jimβs bad mood. Maybe indirectly, sure, but not really Spockβs fault.
βHey.β
And after that brilliant opening, Spock remained silent, his gaze going past Jim to the little trash bin next to Jimβs desk.
βYou did not appreciate the rose?β Spock asked.
βThat?β Jim snorted. βSomeoneβs idea of a joke, I guess.β
βA joke?β
Jim crossed his arms in front of his chest. βWhat can I help you with?β
βI confess I am at a loss at present.β
He frowned. βA loss? About what?β
βRomantic gestures. The advice I have been given is apparently wrong.β
βAdvice? You mean Uhura?β
Spock nodded. βIndeed.β
He tapped his fingers on his sleeve. βYou got bad advice on romance for Uhura?β
βNegative.β
Jim blinked. βBut you saidββ
βFrom Uhura not for her.β
βHuh?β
Spock sighed. There was no other word for the sound his first officer made. βEverything I have tried has been unsuccessful. I can only come to the conclusion that my interest is not reciprocated after all.β
βEverything youβve tried? For who?β
βYou cannot be this obtuse.β
βExcuse me?β
The sigh again. βThe rose, a declaration of affection, was left in your quarters by me. Since only a very few senior officers and your yeoman have access to your quarters at all, I would have thought it was fairly obvious.β
Jim stared at him.
βI attempted to ask you to a concert on Risa which you refused.β
βWait, what? You were with Uhura.β
βNyota and I were attending the concert as friends. It was her suggestion that I ask you, as it would be a casual, relaxing atmosphere in which to learn your interest.β
βMy-my interest?β Jim felt a little faint.
βI also invited you to play chess last night, you refused the invitation. There were other attempts if you would like me to mention them.β
βSpock, I had no idea you wanted me to go the concert with you. I thought you were being polite.β
βI am not known to care for such social graces.β
Jim licked his lips. His heart was hammering. βThat-that day was not good for me. It was Samβs birthday andββ
βYes.β Spock took a step closer. βI thought perhaps you would like to be distracted from your melancholia. But you did not appear to wish for a distraction.β
Jim bent down and retrieved the rose. βThis is from you?β
βYes. I was told it was an appropriate gesture for Valentineβs Day. I confess I have no notion how to be romantic in any way.β
Jim smiled and stepped up to Spock, holding the rose. βI donβt know, Mister Spock. I think maybe youβre doing okay.β
Spock stared at him, dark eyes unreadable yet intense. βThen may I presume my interest is reciprocated after all?β
βAre you kidding?β
βVulcans do notββ
Jim laughed. βYeah, I know.β He kissed Spock, right on the lips, the lips heβd wanted to taste, well since, forever, really. In all his forevers.
Spockβs hand curled around the nape of Jimβs neck, drawing him in closer.
βIn factββ
βIt is time to be quiet now,β Spock murmured against Jimβs lips.
He tried to be affronted, but damn Spock could kiss. βOkay, I get it. Live in the moment. Becauseββ
βJim.β
He smiled against Spockβs mouth. βShutting up.β
Another Spock sigh. This one sounding warmer and softer somehow. βAt last.β
Thanks for reading the throwbacks…this is the last one

Oh oh! Yes! I remember. Thought the same thing now as then: heβs painfully obtuse. But itβs cute in a way.
Except heβs so focus on how someone canβt love him he canβt see that Spock does.
That was a great one to remind of us so I thank you!
Iβve enjoyed these TBTs. π

NO! No no no. Why is this the last one?
Oh, I guess you weren’t going to do one for Thanksgiving. But I’da looked forward to reading it!
Maybe pick back up in January? If you knew how much I need these…..
Their conversation in the middle always reminds me of the “Who’s on first?” skit. Obtuse, indeed.
I love this one. I’ve read it several times! I’m glad you chose it for today.

Well yes I do mean the last one until January. Originally I set this up to be the last one but then you wanted me to continue next year, but I never went back in and changed what this said. This is the last one for a “while” π
Poor dumb Jim! But he finallllyyyyyy gets it! ha ha

Well, Jim was a bit obtuse. On the other hand, at least the concert part, I get how he could misunderstand that one. Plus since he’s convinced himself Spock can’t love him back…I’m happy Spock at some point used actual, clear words. Makes it so much easier, lol.
I hadn’t read them all before, so for me some of the TBTs were new ones :). The day doesn’t have enough hours to catch up on everything I want to read.

Yes and as many years and fics as I have on here it’s probably hard for anyone who isn’t a die hard reader of my work to have read everything! ha ha
It’s cool when things are new to someone.
Yeah I totally get why the concert wasn’t obvious to Jim. π

I think it took me practically 2 years non-stop reading in my free time to read everything. So you can understand why it all runs together and I do so horribly on Tuesdays guessing game!

Oh yeah I get it totally! I have like 200 plus fics

And if anyone doubted my sanity, I can confirm I have lost it. I am currently working on a one-shot to post either today or tomorrow. I am doing a second Christmas story just to post to AO3 called Sleigh Bells (not 25 chapters by the way ha ha) and still have 21 chapters of 25 to write for Let Nothing You Dismay. The good news is I have the entire week of Thanksgiving off!

I enjoyed rereading this. Yes, quite an obtuse Jim but we love him. Especially Spock β€

Spock being subtle does not work with an oblivious Jim. Have to give him E for effort, for all his failed attempts! Glad he kept on trying, finally just telling Jim how he feels. Poor Jim just doesnβt understand that Spock could love him.
Iβm glad that youβll go back to throw back Thursdays in the future. β€οΈπππ
