β€œSo, should I join the Chess Club or the Ancient Literature in Modern Times Discussion Group?”

Bones glanced at Jim as they walked along the path between buildings at Starfleet Academy. β€œThat’s like asking me if you should be a geek or a nerd.”

β€œFunny. I could, honestly, join both because they’re held at different times and days.”

β€œHow fortunate,” Bones said, sarcastically.

Jim smirked at him. β€œYou could join too.”

β€œNo, thanks. I’m up to my eyeballs in courses about being a doctor on a starship. They’re kicking my ass. I have no free time. And any free time I have is spent studying. But I have no free time.”

β€œAnd you repeat repeatedly.”

Bones grinned. β€œYou know it. But knock yourself out, kid. Hopefully all that nerdity won’t rub off on me.”

β€œThat’s not a word.”

β€œTotally is.”

****

When Jim got to the Wednesday Night Chess Club initial meeting he was a little surprised to see a lot of females. And maybe that was a little sexist of him, but it still seemed strange for him to be like the only guy.

He spotted Uhura, from the bar, over by a wall, so he went over to her.

β€œYou’re interested in chess?”

She shrugged. β€œWhy not?”

β€œI don’t know. It’s just…”

Uhura rolled her eyes. β€œLook around, Kirk. Most of the cadets here aren’t interested in chess. Not really.”

Jim glanced around the room and then spotted the tall Vulcan in the corner wearing a black turtleneck sweater, black jeans, and black boots. He was surrounded by females.

He blew out a breath. β€œOh. Professor Spock.”

β€œYes, Professor Spock. Why’d you think everyone was here? Why are you?”

β€œTo play chess, duh.”

β€œYou’re one of the few, I’d say.”

Jim watched her watch him. β€œIncluding you.”

Uhura smiled. β€œHe’s really cool and gorgeous. Brilliant. Why wouldn’t I be interested? Aren’t you?”

β€œWhether I am or not has nothing to do with the Chess Club,” Jim told her. β€œI didn’t even know he was behind it.”

And that was true. Spock was gorgeous, just like Uhura had said, but Jim wasn’t pursuing the Vulcan professor. He had plenty of interest from other cadets, he certainly didn’t need Jim mooning after him too.

But after three chess matches, all of which Jim won easily because those he played with hadn’t paid the slightest attention to the chess game, he decided to leave.

He was headed out the door when Spock called to him.

β€œCadet Kirk, leaving already?”

He turned to face Spock. It was on the tip of his tongue to compliment him on how good he looked in black, before his brain reminded him that he wasn’t going to be like everyone else, gushing over Spock.

β€œYeah, it’s uh…to be honest my opponents weren’t much of a challenge so I don’t think the club is for me.”

Spock inclined his head. β€œPerhaps you would care to challenge me?”

Jim smiled a little. β€œYou, Professor? Bring it on.”

****

A few matches later, some Jim had won, he leaned back in his chair, stretched his arms up in the air and yawned.

β€œYou have an interesting playing style,” Spock murmured.

Jim grinned. β€œYou mean you’re surprised I managed to beat you.”

β€œIt is a rare occurrence when I am bested,” Spock admitted.

Jim looked around and noticed everyone else had left. β€œWow it must be late. Or they all left when I monopolized your time.”

β€œPerhaps some of both.”

Jim got up. β€œThanks. I didn’t mean to keep you away from everyone else.”

β€œMy purpose was to have meaningful chess matches and you provided those. I have no regrets. But we are behind the time I said I would utilize this room so…”

Jim held up his hands. β€œI’m leaving, no worries. Thanks again, Professor.”

β€œYou will be here next Wednesday?” Spock asked as he walked Jim to the door.

β€œI don’t think so. This, uh, this isn’t really my thing.”

β€œI surmised you enjoyed playing chess.”

β€œAnd I do. But the players here tonight…I’m not sure why they were here, exactly,” Jim hedged. β€œBut it wasn’t to play chess. Anyway, I’ve taken up enough of your time. Goodnight.”

****

The following Monday, Jim popped in at the Ancient Literature in Modern Times Discussion Group only to see most of the same cadets he’d seen at the Chess Club, including Uhura.

Jim sighed. β€œDon’t tell me. Spock again?”

β€œOf course,” she said coolly. β€œYou sure managed to catch his attention on Wednesday. Back for more?”

And that’s when Jim noticed just about everyone there was glaring at him with open hostility.

β€œI don’t need this,” he muttered. He looked at Uhura. β€œNope. Wrong room. See you.”

Just as he was stepping outside, Spock approached the room.

β€œYou are leaving?”

β€œYeah, don’t think this group is for me.”

Spock frowned slightly. β€œYou are not interested in Ancient Literature?”

Jim nodded. β€œI am. It’s just…” He took Spock’s elbow and drew him aside. β€œThose cadets in there aren’t interested in discussing literature any more than they are interested in chess. In fact, they’re pretty much the same crowd.”

β€œI do not understand.”

Jim sighed. β€œSpock. They’re interested in you.”

Spock stared at him for a long time and then his lips thinned and he nodded. β€œI see. Would you like to discuss Ancient Literature in Modern Times privately over tea one afternoon?”

Jim smiled. β€œI’d love to.”

Spock looked at the door of the room. β€œIn fact, Cadet…may I call you Jim?”

β€œPlease do.”

β€œIf you are free after the conclusion of this discussion at six-thirty, I would like to take you to dinner.”

For a moment, Jim wasn’t sure what to say. And when he finally did it came out stupid. β€œUh.”

β€œIf I have misjudged an interest then—”

β€œYes. I mean…no. I’m…you’re asking me for a date, right?”

Spock arched a brow. β€œYes.”

Jim moistened his lips. β€œAnd, uh, when you mentioned discussing Ancient Literature over tea? That was a date too, right?”

Spock nodded.

Jim let that wash over him.

β€œThen you are interested?”

β€œYeah. I am. Yes. I’d love to have dinner.” Jim smiled. β€œI guess it would be easier to attend the discussion tonight so we can just go out after.”

β€œIndeed.”

β€œYou know, all those women in there, they really like you.”

β€œWhile I am flattered by their interest, it is misguided.”

β€œOh?”

β€œMy interests with regard to mates lie with males.”

Jim’s smile widened. β€œMy lucky day then. Shall we?” He indicated the door to the room.

Spock went in before him and Jim followed. And it was really hard not to preen in front of the others. But he tried. Really.

I love this! He wasn’t even trying and yet they connected so completely. It makes me so happy. And kinda glad he unintentionally got to stick it to all those silly people who were just being silly. πŸ™‚

Bones comments made me laugh. β€œThat’s like asking me if you should be a geek or a nerd.”
β€œBut knock yourself out, kid. Hopefully all that nerdity won’t rub off on me.” Lol!
Jim is attending these clubs for the actual club, not even knowing who the club mentor is. Love it! Of course they click. Spock also knows a good thing when he sees it. This is the start to a beautiful relationship! Then Jim preening is the perfect ending. Ladies get your paws off of Spock.

What an awesome prompt! From someone? Or from your own bank vault of neverending ideas?

One of the best ever! One of the many that aren’t forgotten in the maze of beloved flashes.

I love how you never hold anything back here, like to save the best stuff for ao3 and longer stories and a larger audience. I don’t know many writers who would just turn in a 110% performance every day (here AND ao3). Thank you. This is the exact reason I followed you in the first place when I discovered you 3 1/2 years ago.

Thanks for the flash/story memories, and I look forward to you keepin’ ’em coming.

But this one is super specially memorable. Love it.

(Hope you’re not offended by the 110% remark. I mean, it’s actually MUCH higher than that. But I’m not Spock to know how to be precisely accurate.)

thank you so much! I came up with this one on my own (I think ha ha) so I am very glad you liked it. I think those that read my flashes here deserve something extra. Sometimes I will repost them on AO3 but often not and so that’s those that don’t read me here’s loss. You guys get extra for putting up with me here! ❀

Oh, I love this one! This is brilliant. Jim is going there to be his nerdy self, absolutely deserving to be there and geek out on both occasions. And being pretty much the only one (I assume it’s the first time Spock did this? Otherwise I figure he’d given up out of frustration already). Completely oblivious about who’s running the show. I love that he basically turned around when he realized the second one was just the same all over again. Seriously, I’m adoring this one so much. It totally made my day! Thank you!!

Yes, first time Spock had done the chess club and literature get togethers. Yep our boy genuinely wanted to play chess and study lit!!
And he got the Vulcan besides πŸ™‚
