βSo, should I join the Chess Club or the Ancient Literature in Modern Times Discussion Group?β
Bones glanced at Jim as they walked along the path between buildings at Starfleet Academy. βThatβs like asking me if you should be a geek or a nerd.β
βFunny. I could, honestly, join both because theyβre held at different times and days.β
βHow fortunate,β Bones said, sarcastically.
Jim smirked at him. βYou could join too.β
βNo, thanks. Iβm up to my eyeballs in courses about being a doctor on a starship. Theyβre kicking my ass. I have no free time. And any free time I have is spent studying. But I have no free time.β
βAnd you repeat repeatedly.β
Bones grinned. βYou know it. But knock yourself out, kid. Hopefully all that nerdity wonβt rub off on me.β
βThatβs not a word.β
βTotally is.β

When Jim got to the Wednesday Night Chess Club initial meeting he was a little surprised to see a lot of females. And maybe that was a little sexist of him, but it still seemed strange for him to be like the only guy.
He spotted Uhura, from the bar, over by a wall, so he went over to her.
βYouβre interested in chess?β
She shrugged. βWhy not?β
βI donβt know. Itβs justβ¦β
Uhura rolled her eyes. βLook around, Kirk. Most of the cadets here arenβt interested in chess. Not really.β
Jim glanced around the room and then spotted the tall Vulcan in the corner wearing a black turtleneck sweater, black jeans, and black boots. He was surrounded by females.
He blew out a breath. βOh. Professor Spock.β
βYes, Professor Spock. Whyβd you think everyone was here? Why are you?β
βTo play chess, duh.β
βYouβre one of the few, Iβd say.β
Jim watched her watch him. βIncluding you.β
Uhura smiled. βHeβs really cool and gorgeous. Brilliant. Why wouldnβt I be interested? Arenβt you?β
βWhether I am or not has nothing to do with the Chess Club,β Jim told her. βI didnβt even know he was behind it.β
And that was true. Spock was gorgeous, just like Uhura had said, but Jim wasnβt pursuing the Vulcan professor. He had plenty of interest from other cadets, he certainly didnβt need Jim mooning after him too.
But after three chess matches, all of which Jim won easily because those he played with hadnβt paid the slightest attention to the chess game, he decided to leave.
He was headed out the door when Spock called to him.
βCadet Kirk, leaving already?β
He turned to face Spock. It was on the tip of his tongue to compliment him on how good he looked in black, before his brain reminded him that he wasnβt going to be like everyone else, gushing over Spock.
βYeah, itβs uhβ¦to be honest my opponents werenβt much of a challenge so I donβt think the club is for me.β
Spock inclined his head. βPerhaps you would care to challenge me?β
Jim smiled a little. βYou, Professor? Bring it on.β

A few matches later, some Jim had won, he leaned back in his chair, stretched his arms up in the air and yawned.
βYou have an interesting playing style,β Spock murmured.
Jim grinned. βYou mean youβre surprised I managed to beat you.β
βIt is a rare occurrence when I am bested,β Spock admitted.
Jim looked around and noticed everyone else had left. βWow it must be late. Or they all left when I monopolized your time.β
βPerhaps some of both.β
Jim got up. βThanks. I didnβt mean to keep you away from everyone else.β
βMy purpose was to have meaningful chess matches and you provided those. I have no regrets. But we are behind the time I said I would utilize this room soβ¦β
Jim held up his hands. βIβm leaving, no worries. Thanks again, Professor.β
βYou will be here next Wednesday?β Spock asked as he walked Jim to the door.
βI donβt think so. This, uh, this isnβt really my thing.β
βI surmised you enjoyed playing chess.β
βAnd I do. But the players here tonightβ¦Iβm not sure why they were here, exactly,β Jim hedged. βBut it wasnβt to play chess. Anyway, Iβve taken up enough of your time. Goodnight.β

The following Monday, Jim popped in at the Ancient Literature in Modern Times Discussion Group only to see most of the same cadets heβd seen at the Chess Club, including Uhura.
Jim sighed. βDonβt tell me. Spock again?β
βOf course,β she said coolly. βYou sure managed to catch his attention on Wednesday. Back for more?β
And thatβs when Jim noticed just about everyone there was glaring at him with open hostility.
βI donβt need this,β he muttered. He looked at Uhura. βNope. Wrong room. See you.β
Just as he was stepping outside, Spock approached the room.
βYou are leaving?β
βYeah, donβt think this group is for me.β
Spock frowned slightly. βYou are not interested in Ancient Literature?β
Jim nodded. βI am. Itβs justβ¦β He took Spockβs elbow and drew him aside. βThose cadets in there arenβt interested in discussing literature any more than they are interested in chess. In fact, theyβre pretty much the same crowd.β
βI do not understand.β
Jim sighed. βSpock. Theyβre interested in you.β
Spock stared at him for a long time and then his lips thinned and he nodded. βI see. Would you like to discuss Ancient Literature in Modern Times privately over tea one afternoon?β
Jim smiled. βIβd love to.β
Spock looked at the door of the room. βIn fact, Cadetβ¦may I call you Jim?β
βPlease do.β
βIf you are free after the conclusion of this discussion at six-thirty, I would like to take you to dinner.β
For a moment, Jim wasnβt sure what to say. And when he finally did it came out stupid. βUh.β
βIf I have misjudged an interest thenββ
βYes. I meanβ¦no. Iβmβ¦youβre asking me for a date, right?β
Spock arched a brow. βYes.β
Jim moistened his lips. βAnd, uh, when you mentioned discussing Ancient Literature over tea? That was a date too, right?β
Spock nodded.
Jim let that wash over him.
βThen you are interested?β
βYeah. I am. Yes. Iβd love to have dinner.β Jim smiled. βI guess it would be easier to attend the discussion tonight so we can just go out after.β
βIndeed.β
βYou know, all those women in there, they really like you.β
βWhile I am flattered by their interest, it is misguided.β
βOh?β
βMy interests with regard to mates lie with males.β
Jimβs smile widened. βMy lucky day then. Shall we?β He indicated the door to the room.
Spock went in before him and Jim followed. And it was really hard not to preen in front of the others. But he tried. Really.

I love this! He wasnβt even trying and yet they connected so completely. It makes me so happy. And kinda glad he unintentionally got to stick it to all those silly people who were just being silly. π

Bones comments made me laugh. βThatβs like asking me if you should be a geek or a nerd.β
βBut knock yourself out, kid. Hopefully all that nerdity wonβt rub off on me.β Lol!
Jim is attending these clubs for the actual club, not even knowing who the club mentor is. Love it! Of course they click. Spock also knows a good thing when he sees it. This is the start to a beautiful relationship! Then Jim preening is the perfect ending. Ladies get your paws off of Spock.

What an awesome prompt! From someone? Or from your own bank vault of neverending ideas?
One of the best ever! One of the many that aren’t forgotten in the maze of beloved flashes.
I love how you never hold anything back here, like to save the best stuff for ao3 and longer stories and a larger audience. I don’t know many writers who would just turn in a 110% performance every day (here AND ao3). Thank you. This is the exact reason I followed you in the first place when I discovered you 3 1/2 years ago.
Thanks for the flash/story memories, and I look forward to you keepin’ ’em coming.
But this one is super specially memorable. Love it.
(Hope you’re not offended by the 110% remark. I mean, it’s actually MUCH higher than that. But I’m not Spock to know how to be precisely accurate.)

thank you so much! I came up with this one on my own (I think ha ha) so I am very glad you liked it. I think those that read my flashes here deserve something extra. Sometimes I will repost them on AO3 but often not and so that’s those that don’t read me here’s loss. You guys get extra for putting up with me here! β€

Oh, I love this one! This is brilliant. Jim is going there to be his nerdy self, absolutely deserving to be there and geek out on both occasions. And being pretty much the only one (I assume it’s the first time Spock did this? Otherwise I figure he’d given up out of frustration already). Completely oblivious about who’s running the show. I love that he basically turned around when he realized the second one was just the same all over again. Seriously, I’m adoring this one so much. It totally made my day! Thank you!!
