Spock watched somewhat apprehensively as the humanβs boyβs gaze skittered over the room, landing nowhere.
βThis will be your room.β
βOkay,β Jim said in a small voice.
Earlier, Spockβs mom had made cinnamon cookies and she had given one to Jim. To Spockβs discomfort, Jim had merely stared long and hard at the cookie. Spock had been about to advise Jim that he should eat it when his mother had firmly shaken her head at him.
Jim had then asked for a napkin and when heβd received one, he had carefully wrapped it around the cookie.
Spockβs mother had advised him that he wasnβt to make a fuss over anything Jim did unless it was directly harmful to Jim or someone else. So now Jim still had the wrapped cookie in hand and while Spock watched he walked over to the chest full of drawers, opened one of them, and placed the cookie inside.
Spock wanted to tell him that no one, no one, would take the cookie from him. In fact, Jim could have all the cookies he could eat, Spock would make sure of that, but his motherβs words of warning still rang in his head so he remained silent.
Earlier, Jim had showered under the supervision of Spockβs mother. His hair was still damp and plastered to his head and surprisingly he looked even smaller and slighter than before.
That Sarek thought Jim should go to another family on Vulcan in the condition he clearly was in, was quite unfathomable to Spock. For all that Sarek was married to a human and had a human foster daughter, Spock did not think Sarek knew humans very well at all.
βYou should rest for the night, Jim,β he told the boy. βThe bed has been made to be comfortable for you. There should be everything you need here. I am not far should you need anything, however. There is also a call button next to the bed if you need Mother.β
βI understand.β
Spock wished to say more but didnβt know what. So he turned to leave, his hand resting near the off switch for the light.
βNo,β Jim said urgently.
Spock turned quickly back.
βCan youβ¦leave the light on?β Jim wouldnβt look at him. βTheβ¦darknessβ¦I donβtβ¦β
βYes,β Spock said. βI will leave it on.β
Jim nodded. Still not looking at Spock.
βGoodnight.β
When he stepped outside, Michael was waiting for him. Spock was not surprised.
βHow is he?β
βAfraid.β
βI can see why.β She reached down and pulled a stuffed dog out of her bag and handed it to Spock. βGive him this.β
Spock frowned. βI do not thinkβ¦β
βGive it to him. Itβll help.β She turned and went back to her room.
Spock turned back to Jimβs door and knocked softly. Then he opened the door and stepped inside.
βJim, Michael thought you might wish to have this while here.β
Jim eyed the dog. βIβm not a child.β
He nodded. βThat is what I expected. I will tell her that you are not interested in having it.β
βYou canβ¦leave it. There on the bed.β
Surprised, Spock brought the stuffed dog to the bed and left it there. Jim still not meeting his gaze.
βGoodnight,β he said. And once more left Jimβs room.

Ok, I’m not sure I can survive this story.
That’s twice you’ve killed me with it already.
Sweet Michael. I just….I love how you’re willing to just jump in there and let her not only be around, but be sweet. Sigh…..
Ok, just drop everything else in your entire life and world and just write on this and the Vanik story.
Sigh….I can’t even…

I know poor sweet Jim, but at least he doesn’t have to deal entirely with Sarek, can you imagine?

I want to hug Jim and have Spock stay with him to protect him as he sleeps.

I know, poor sweet baby Jim. I don’t think Spock is quite there yet with thinking about that kind of thing. The situation mostly confuses him right now

Gah heβs killing me. Heβs trying to be so strong but the terrors heβs faced…. got me straight in the feels. I just want to hug him.
Thank god heβs got Spock now!

Yes he does, poor confused Spock and all

Sweet, poor Jim. But, there’s a confused but caring Spock and sweet and caring Amanda and Michael. That should level it out, because Sarek tips the scale way the other way. I do like how Spock recognizes that despite his personal connection to humans, Sarek is rather lacking in that department.
