Flash Fic, November 12, 2021

This one is a touch sad and begs for some sort of sequel resolution, so you might see one in the December flashes! Different kind of jealousy too!

Winona had always had trouble bonding with her son, Jim. There was the whole becoming a widow on the date of Jim’s birth, sure, but there were other reasons, mostly her fault, she knew, but Jim had always been…distant with her in a way Sam never had been.

Of course, Sam had left and Jim had not, but still, now she had reconciled with her older son, but Jim remained elusive to her.

Oh it was nothing outright. He called her Mom never Mother, he was always polite, if not warm, he smiled at her, if it lacked warmth, and never disparaged her to anyone.

Yet as she watched Spock’s interaction with his mother, Amanda, she could see the difference.

They were both there in San Francisco to visit their sons while they attended Starfleet Academy. Jim had told her all about his new, bourgeoning relationship with the Vulcan, and by the time Winona had arranged a visit, Jim had moved into Spock’s off-campus apartment.

To her surprise, Spock’s mother, Amanda Grayson, was also there.

Thus why as they all went to dinner together, Winona was able to notice the difference in how Spock was with his mother.

Even though Spock was a Vulcan, he was noticeably warmer in his behavior toward his mother than Jim was with her. Subtle little things. Nothing she could even point to if asked, but she felt it.

When they both went to the bathroom together, that was Spock and Jim, not her and Winona, she used that chance to mention her observations to the other human woman.

“I envy you,” Winona said plainly. Then she laughed and shook her head. “Who am I kidding? I’m flat out jealous.”

Amanda gave her a funny look. “Jealous? Over what? I can’t imagine.”

She sighed. “Your easy relationship with Spock. I’ve never had that with Jim.”

“Really? I don’t sense any tension or awkwardness between you.”

“Oh, nothing that obvious. Jim’s far too good of a boy to allow that to filter through.” She sighed again and leaned her chin on her hand. “I’m not making sense, I’m sure. But I know what I mean. Anyway, you’re lucky. I can tell how much Spock loves and respects you as his mother.”

A moment later, their sons returned, and they continued with their visit.

A couple of days later, Jim walked with her to the shuttlebay for her return to Riverside.

“I’m very happy you’re doing so well with the Academy and with Spock.”

“Thanks, Mom.”

They didn’t say anything else until they got to where her gate was located.

“Maybe you can come home for Christmas, you know when your break comes next month.”

He gave her a vague smile. “Maybe. I’ll see if I can manage it.”

“I can get a tree. Really decorate it up. All your favorite foods.”

“We’ll see.”

She bit her lip. “You can bring Spock.”

His smile never dimmed. “Maybe. I’ll let you know. Looks like they’re getting ready to board.”

She knew that was her gentle dismissal. Yes, he’d been rather like that almost from when he was a small child and certainly since Frank.

“Jim, we’re all right, aren’t we? You and me?” she ventured to ask, even though she knew without a doubt he would say yes, no matter what the truth of it was.

“Of course we are,” he gave her the predicted answer.

She moved to hug him and she was delighted when he didn’t move away as he had when she had arrived for her visit. That had hurt though she had done her damndest to hide it.

She held on tight to him while she could and she couldn’t help but notice how much like George he was. He even smelled like George. George would have been crazy nuts for Jim, just as he had been for Sam.

When she had become pregnant with Jim, George had been enthusiastic enough at the prospect that this one might be a girl, but she knew deep down he wanted another boy. They’d decided to keep it a secret until the time. And she wished they hadn’t because there would have been things they could have enjoyed in the planning for their second son that they’d never been able to do.

“You don’t want to miss your shuttle.”

Jim spoke softly and kindly as he always did, but that distant hint of dismissal was there just the same. Her heart twisted a bit, but she released her hold on him, and tried not to show him how very close to tears she was.

A silly, melancholy old woman was what she had become.

“I had a wonderful visit.”

“Me too,” Jim assured her and it even sounded sincere.

“I love you, baby.”

“Love you too, Mom.”

And she turned and went through the gate. When she turned back around to wave goodbye, he had already moved away, his long legs had already taken him far away from her.

“Let me do it myself, Mommy!”

Words she remembered him saying so often to her as a child. He never wanted her to help him.

Winona wiped her eyes, turned back around and went to go to he shuttle, praying that Jim would come for Christmas break, but knowing she would likely be disappointed.

“You are going to the fall festival with the doctor?” Spock asked.

Jim didn’t even look up from his PADD. “Uh-huh.”

They were seated outside under an umbrella. Spock had hot tea and Jim had something called a Pumpkin Chai Latte over ice.

They had both removed their Academy attire for the day. Jim wore obscenely tight jeans and a T-shirt that declared Happy Fall Y’all, which Spock had pointed out many times was grammatically incorrect, and Spock wore much looser denim trousers and a burgundy sweater.

“But why?”

“Because he asked me.” Jim looked up at Spock at last. “If you remember, you said you had—and I’m quoting here—’zero interest in attending such a festivity’.”

“I thought we had agreed not to go.”

Jim gave Spock one of those smiles he generally reserved for those he thought were idiots. Spock was somewhat surprised to be on the receiving end of one.

“No, Spock. You agreed not to go. I did no such thing. Bones asked and I said yes.”

“But…you and I are…” And here Spock floundered for the proper term. Neither ‘dating’ nor ‘seeing each other’ quite seemed right. For that matter ‘sleeping together’ wasn’t quite it either.

At least this time, Jim helped him out.

“Right, I know. But that has nothing to do with this.”

“It does not?”

“No. Bones and I are going together as friends who want to go. No big deal.”

“Then I will go as well.”

Jim stuck the straw of his drink into his mouth, but not before Spock caught a hint of that same smile.

“Why?” Jim asked.

“Because if you are going, I should go.”

“We’re not joined at the hip, sweetheart.”

And Spock warmed at the endearment even though he tried not to. He liked it when Jim used such terms for him. Illogical nonsense but there it was.

“I realize but…”

Jim was now tilting his head this way and that as he peered at Spock. “Oh. I get it.”

“Get what?”

He laughed. “You’re jealous.”

Spock was affronted. “I most certainly am not.”

“Yeah you are. You don’t like me doing things with Bones that don’t include you. It’s silly. I’m not interested in Bones. I’m interested in you. I would think my screaming your name last night would have convinced you.” He shrugged.

“Jim.”

Jim laughed again. “We’re friends only. Just like you and…” He wrinkled his nose in the same way he did when he smelled Spock cooking broccoli.

“Nyota,” Spock supplied.

“Yeah her. Anyway, there’s no need for you to go to the fall festival. Stay home and do whatever it is Vulcans do when their mates aren’t with them.”

Spock sniffed. “Most Vulcan mates don’t date others.”

“Spock.”

“Very well.” Spock paused. “What time are we leaving for the festival?”

Jim rolled his eyes but sighed. “Ten tomorrow morning.”

Spock nodded. “I will be ready.”

“Swell.” Jim laughed. “No, I mean that. I do.” He held his drink out for Spock to try, who did so.

“Not terrible.”

“There you see. Finish up and let’s go home.”

Spock did and as they walked to their apartment, he wondered how he got manipulated into going to the fall festival. Because he was certain that somehow…he was.

“You’re showing your jealousy.”

Jim laughed. “Jealous? What have I got to be jealous about?”

His best friend, Bones, rolled his eyes. They were seated in the Academy cafeteria, enjoying a late afternoon lunch.

Well, enjoying might be a slight exaggeration. The food was only marginally better than the food in Jim’s middle school cafeteria.

Bones fingered his chin. “Oh, I don’t know. Your ex is over there cozying up to your nemesis.”

“Uhura is not my nemesis.”

“Sure, sure. But she’s still practically sitting in the lap of Professor Spock.”

“Hey, whatever. Spock dumped me. He’s no longer my concern.”

“Okay, yeah. Maybe.”

Jim eyed him over his bad cup of coffee. “What does that mean?”

“Well.” Bones shrugged. “I know you two had a fight. I know you’ve been staying at the dorm ever since with me.”

“But?”

“Are you, well, was that really an official breakup? Did the hobgoblin actually say the words ‘Jim, it’s over’ or you know ‘I hereby dump you’?”

“No one says that.”

“Some version of that then.”

“Doesn’t he look like he broke up with me?” Jim asked. “He hasn’t looked this way once and he seems pretty focused on her.”

“To make you jealous, maybe.”

Jim laughed. “Well, it’s totally not working.”

“Of course not. But I still say having a fight doesn’t mean he intends for it to be done done.”

“Has he attempted to contact me or come crawling back? Nope. He has not. In fact, he’s dating. So, fuck him. Or don’t fuck him as the case might be.”

“You could be the mature one.”

“Ha. Not likely. I’ll go down with the ship before that ever happens.” Jim didn’t care that made no sense. Whatever. “I have a date myself tonight.”

“With who?”

“Gaila.”

Bones sighed. “Bad idea.”

“I don’t remember asking you.”

“And right there is where you get yourself in trouble. You should have. The moment you screw Gaila, you can forget you and Spock reconciling.”

“For the last time, Bones, WHO. CARES?”

Bones shook his head. “You’re funeral.”

****

“Jimmy, I’m having a crappy time and you look sad.”

Jim eyed her over his grasshopper. All right so he liked green. Orions, Vulcans. Whatever. Drinks counted too. Even way too sweet ones.

“Sorry.”

Gaila sighed. “You could contact him and say you’re sorry.”

“I’m not,” Jim insisted. “He was being a jerk.”

“Maybe he was and maybe he wasn’t. Does it matter who was wrong and who was right? You’re completely miserable.”

“He has a girlfriend.” He took another sip, grimaced, and then another.

“Uhura? Nah. Nyota’s not his girlfriend.”

“She wants to be.”

“Doesn’t make it so. There’s lots of girls who want to be your girlfriend, but you want Spock.”

“I do not.” He scowled.

“Jimmy, I…I’m going to go,” she said suddenly, rising from the seat across from him in the booth at the bar.

“What? Why?”

“Because someone else wants this seat.”

“What? Who?”

She shook her head, leaned down, and kissed his forehead. “Be good, Jimmy.”

She walked away and then a shadow fell across the table. Jim looked up and saw Spock looming over him. His gaze was on the green concoction in front of Jim.

“Sweet cocktails make you sick.”

“So what?”

Spock sighed and took the sear Gaila most recently occupied.

“What do you want?” Jim asked sullenly.

“To take you home. To our apartment.”

“I don’t live there. You kicked me out.”

“I did no such thing.”

“Well.” Jim shrugged. “Why do you want me to go home with you?”

“Because I love you and you are mine,” Spock said simply.

Jim blinked. He pushed away the sickening drink. “Yeah?”

Spock shook his had and sighed. “You are most illogical. There are times I would like to choke you and I am quite certain you feel that way about me.”

Jim smiled a little. “Yeah.”

“But there is no one else I would rather be with for the rest of my life.”

“Not even Uhura?”

“Not even her. There is no need to be jealous of my friendship with Nyota, Jim. She is only a friend and that is all she will ever be. I have tried to tell you that before. You are the one I want. Only.”

Jim bit his lip, then nodded. “Okay. I’ll go home with you.” His stomach churned. “But I did drink way too many of those things.”

“Indeed.” Spock nodded and stood, helping Jim from the booth. “Come, I will take care of you while you are sick.”

Jim walked out with Spock, Spock’s arm around him, and he felt…not great. But better.

“It feels so cold.” Jim shivered as he stepped past the threshold of the house. He suddenly regretted letting his friends talk him into going into the creepy house.

“Well.” Janice scooted next to him. “No one’s occupied it for years, so there’s no heat or anything. It makes sense it would be cold.”

“Mm.”

He was there with Janice, Christine, Bones, Sulu, Uhura and Spock. Jim had a big time crush on Spock, but so did Uhura. She had been jonesing to go out with Spock and get her nails into him since the beginning of the semester of the Academy. That was the sole reason she was there that night. Because of Spock.

Jim had a little hope, though, because Spock had only agreed to go into the creepy house because Janice had talked Jim into attending. Bones told Jim that Janice liked him, but Jim had eyes only for Spock. Yeah, it probably sucked for everyone.

Despite the hope he did have, Jim wasn’t convinced it meant Spock was sexually interested in him. It could just be that he thought Jim was stupid enough to get himself hurt at the creepy house and admittedly they were friends. Spock had sort of made himself Jim’s personal bodyguard ever since Jim’s acrimonious breakup with a girl whose brother wanted to kick his ass.

“Okay, sure,” Jim agreed. “But it seems like…unusually cool. Like blast freeze.”

“Or ghostly visitors?” Bones asked with a knowing smirk. “Trying to go for atmosphere, Jim?:

He shrugged. “This wasn’t my idea.”

He saw a room at the end of the hallway but the others seemed to be headed in the direction of the kitchen. For some reason, Jim felt drawn to that room, so he lingered behind from the group and headed in that direction instead. He put his hand on the outside of the door which almost felt like he was touching a block of ice.

A voice in his head told him not to open the door, but he ignored it, twisted the knob and went into the room.

It appeared to be an old ballroom, from back in the days, he guessed, rich people had those. The room was so cold, Jim could see his breath, and he started to shake uncontrollably.

I shouldn’t be here. Something bad happened here. Really bad.

“Spock,” he said out loud, though he couldn’t say why.

As he turned around to head out, he suddenly realized he was somehow in the middle of the room, though he couldn’t remember walking that far in. Cold fingers touched his neck and he blanched. Suddenly coming toward him was a wisp of smoke or mist and for some reason he found he couldn’t move.

The door of the room slammed open like an explosion in the empty room and then warm fingers seized his wrist and yanked him with unusual force from the the room.

“We are leaving,” Spock’s voice said directly into his ear.

The next he knew, he was outside of the house entirely and being held in Spock’s strong warm arms. Spock was rubbing his back and he was speaking softly but Jim wasn’t sure what he said.

Slowly he began to feel warmer and become more aware of what was happening around him. He realized the others were there too.

“It is all right, Jim. You are safe now,” Spock spoke softly.

Jim nodded and snuggled in closer to him. “What was that?”

“I do not know. Leonard says you suffered from a bit of shock but he gave you something and you are coming out of it.”

“M’kay.”

Spock’s hold tightened. “I am going to take you home as soon as you are well enough to walk away from here. I think the sooner the better though.”

“I’m ready. Just…not sure I want to be alone.”

“I am taking you home with me,” Spock assured him.

Jim summoned up his first smile in quite some time to look into Spock’s face. “Yeah?”

“Of course.”

Nearby Uhura sighed and muttered, “I don’t know why I ever bothered.”

“Told you,” Sulu whispered back.

Spock took Jim’s arm and they all began to walk away from the spooky house. Some looked back as they did, warily, but Jim kept his eyes firmly away. He never wanted to see it again.

But at least…Spock. Something good had come out of it. But it would be a long time before he’d come anywhere near this area.

Flash Fic, October 11, 2021

“Do you hear that?” Jim’s steps faltered as he walked along the foggy path toward home. It had seemed a short trip when he left the restaurant.

“Hear what?” Beside him was his “date” he guessed. Gary Mitchell. Only Jim was definitely not feeling it.

“Sounded like…howling.”

Gary snorted. “Howling? Geez. I know it’s October but cut it out with the stupid shit, will you?”

Jim felt himself blush, but attempted to ignore Gary just the same. “It’s cold tonight.”

“I’d offer you my jacket, but you’re the dummy who didn’t bother to bring one.”

Jim’s jaw clenched. “It was warm today, I didn’t think about it.”

“That’s the thing, Jim. You don’t think.”

Jim stopped in front of Gary’s apartment building. “Okay. Here we are. See you.”

“What? You aren’t coming inside?”

“Why would I?”

Gary gave him a look like he thought Jim was a moron. Jim figured Gary was the moron for even imagining Jim would sleep with him.

“To finish our date.”

Jim laughed. “Our date is finished.”

“Fuck you, Kirk.”

“You wish. Get lost, Gary. Have a nice night.”

Jim began to walk away in the fog, leaving Gary behind as he headed in the direction of his own place.

He was less than a block away when he heard a man’s scream, followed by snarling and then another howl.

His heart picked up pace, beating hard in his chest. He didn’t care what Gary said, something was out there in the fog.

Jim decided to run, feeling as though his life likely depended on it. He had only a few short blocks to go, but it felt like miles and the fog seemed endless. When he thought he could go no further, his apartment building was in sight. He ran up the stairs to the front glass doors and turned around, feeling like his heart was in his throat.

There was nothing there. No one seemed to be chasing him. And as he stood there, panting, the fog began to lift, and the area around the apartment building cleared and came fully into focus.

But he was not alone, because coming up the walkway was the Vulcan, Spock. A professor at the Academy that lived in the same Academy apartments as Jim did. He had to admit the Vulcan was insanely hot.

“Oh. Hello. Uh, Spock. Did-did you come from that way?”

Spock arched a brow. “Obviously.”

“Yeah.” He laughed nervously. “You hear anything?”

“Such as?” Spock joined Jim on the steps by the doors.

“A scream or-or howling.”

“I did not.”

“See anything?”

“It was most difficult to see clearly in the fog, Cadet. But it seems to be clearing. Shall we?” Spock reached past him and opened the door to the building. “You do look rather pale.”

“Yeah. Seems like my imagination freaked me out a bit.” Jim smiled and headed for the lift that would take him to his floor. Spock’s apartment was on the ground floor so required no lift. “Goodnight.”

“Goodnight.”

In the morning, Jim was sipping coffee in the cafeteria when Bones appeared.

“Hey. Didn’t you have a date with Mitchell last night?” Bones asked, as he sits down.

Jim rolls his eyes. “If you could call it that. Big mistake. He’s a jerk.”

“Well, don’t think you’ll have to worry too much.”

“Huh? Why?”

Bones shrugged. “Mitchell has disappeared.”

Flash Fic, September 29, 2021

And the conclusion from Spock

Spock was both surprised and anxious to see Jim sitting on the floor in front of Spock’s apartment. He had his legs bent at the knee and his arms wrapped around them. His eyes had been closed but they opened at Spock’s approach.

“Spock, hi.”

Spock surveyed Jim for any signs of new injuries or stress, but saw none, so when Jim held up his hand for Spock to assist him up, he offered it and pulled the cadet to his feet.

“Jim, I am surprised to see you. I anticipated you would still be experiencing your evening with the Caitian sisters.”

Jim visibly swallowed. “Yeah, well. That didn’t happen.”

Spock opened the door to his apartment and Jim followed him inside.

“They changed their plans?”

“I changed our plans. Canceled.”

Spock hung up his coat. “You decided not to engage in coitus with them?”

Jim laughed at that, though it was oddly without much mirth. “Something like that. Spock, I want to talk to you.”

He inclined his head. “Very well. Shall I make us tea?”

“Okay, sure.” Jim followed Spock to the kitchen, though he remained on the edge while Spock filled a kettle with water. “How was the movie with, uh, whatshisname.”

“Finnegan,” Spock replied, helpfully.

Jim snorted. “Yeah I know his name, Spock.”

“As it happens, I saw the movie alone.”

“You did? How come?”

Spock paused as he put the loose tea in the teapot. Finally he made a decision. “I chose to cancel my plans with Mister Finnegan as well.”

Jim stared. “Mister Finnegan? Not Sean?”

Spock’s lips quirked. “Not Sean.” He turned to face Jim. “To be entirely truthful, I never had much anticipation to see the movie with him.”

“No?”

“Or anything with him. He is a rather unpleasant individual.”

Jim blinked rapidly. “Then…why?”

“The answer is not one I am particularly proud of.”

“I’m still listening.”

Spock nodded. “Allow me to finish this and then we can talk.”

Jim made an impatient sound, but agreed. This evening was beginning to be much more anxiety-inducing than Spock had originally planned. But Spock supposed he should have realized anything to do with Jim was not ordinary.

After Spock moved the pot of tea to his small dining room table, they both took their seats, and Spock poured the steeped tea into cups.

“I am likewise curious as to the cancelation of your plans. You seemed to be anticipating the engagement.”

“Yeah. Well. They were…I was never serious about them. Her. They were meant to be a distraction,” Jim admitted. He wrapped his hands around the teacup,

“A distraction?”

“Mm. Only it turned out they weren’t distracting me.”

Spock sipped his tea carefully. “What were they meant to distract you from?”

Jim smiled. “I could say you first, but I won’t. They were meant to distract me from you, Spock. Ever since we became part of the same friend group, well, I’ve been attracted to you. And the more I’ve gotten to know you, the more it’s gone beyond attraction. Sadly, though, you don’t give me the time of day, so…”

“The time of day.”

“Kind of a saying meaning you don’t even notice me.” Jim sighed. “Part of the reason I punched Finnegan’s lights out was because I was jealous that you seemed interested in him, yet there was nothing from you for me but friendship. So, that’s where I am. And pretty pathetic. But I thought if it’s Finnegan you want—”

“It is not.” Spock paused. He put his cup down. His heart rate had increased by a lot. He leaned forward. “It has never been.”

“Then why—”

“I did tell you I was not proud of the reason.”:

“Yes but—”

“My intention of my alleged pursuit of Finnegan was to make you jealous,” Spock admitted. “Therefore, my actions contributed to your punching his lights out.”

Jim burst out laughing. “Well, yes, but no. They were my actions, Spock.”

“I am no more interested in Cadet Finnegan than I am in a pesky fly. It is you I am interested in, Jim, and have always been, since the beginnings of our friendship. I withdrew from the plans with Finnegan because they did not seem to have the desired effect.”

“Oh, they did.” Jim leaned forward and kissed Spock. “I couldn’t stop thinking about you with him.”

“A most disturbing thought,” Spock murmured against Jim’s mouth.

“You said it, Professor. God, to think all this time that you…”

“And you…”

“Yeah.” Jim pulled Spock out of his chair. “I definitely need to study/”

“Study?”

“Uh-huh. Vulcan anatomy.”

Spock smiled a little. “Very well, Cadet. There will be a test later.”

Jim laughed. “I’m counting on it.”

****

Spock waited anxiously at the booth in their usual restaurant. He waited for Jim, who was supposed to meet him after his retake of the landing party simulation test with Professor Lucas.

He had no doubt that Jim was more than capable of handling himself and any potential crew members, holograms or not, but Finnegan was an unknown and clearly pushed Jim’s buttons.

Spock found it hard to concentrate on the menu, which he knew by heart anyway, when finally Jim appeared at the entrance, smiled in Christine Chapel’s direction, and then headed for Spock’s location.

As Jim slid in across from him, Spock held out his two fingers, which Jim met with an even wider smile.

“I love that by the way. I don’t know why.”

“I am gratified you do. Well?”

“Passed with flying colors. Made sure every single crew member was safe, Finnegan included, and managed to disable the alien attackers without decimating their species.” Jim grinned and picked up his menu. “Top of the class.”

“I never had any doubt you would be,” Spock replied. “And Mister Finnegan?”

“He managed to pass, barely, thanks in part to the actions of his first office who saved the day.”

Spock arched his brow. “You?”

“Who else? Anyway, that’s the end of that class and good riddance to him.”

“Indeed. I am illogically proud of you.”

“Me too. And I’m starving too.”

Spock picked up his menu, chose vegetable soup, and let himself relax. It was a good day and dare he think it…he was happy.

And that’s a wrap on September. October flashes begin Friday.

Part 2

Jim spotted Spock sitting in a booth at the café they often all frequented. It was about two blocks away from Starfleet Academy, so close to get there, but often not swarming with other cadets.

But he was not alone.

Standing next to the booth was Finnegan with his usual shit-eating grin. And though Jim had tried to wipe that same annoying grin off his face earlier that day, it was still there.

Jim stayed away because the last person he wanted to deal with in that moment was his nemesis. So he hid himself by the hostess stand, ignoring the amused looks of the hostess, Christine Chapel. He could still see them, mostly.

“Why don’t you just go down there and interrupt them?”

Jim glanced at her. “Because I’d just want to finish what I started.”

“Kicking the shit out of him?’

“Something like that. And I’d end up kicked out of the Academy. Wouldn’t that just prove everyone right?”

Christine frowned. “Who’s everyone?”

“Frank,” he muttered.

“That’s hardly everyone, Jim.”

“Well.” He shrugged. Turned his attention fully to her. “What are you doing here anyway? You’re a nurse.”

“Picking up extra hours at an easy job. I’m looking to get an apartment off campus.”

“Smart. I want one of those too. Spock has one.”

“I’ve heard. Lucky.”

Jim snorted. “It’s luck all right, in the form of fatherly connections. Something neither of us have.”

“Hmm. Finnegan’s leaving.”

“Good. Hope he trips on the way out.”

Christine laughed. “Hate the guy that much huh?”

“You have no idea.”

“I have a pretty good idea. And I think it relates to Spock.”

He gave her a dismissive look and went down the aisle to the booth where Spock sat with a pot of tea and some vegetable tart thing.

Jim slid in across from him. ‘Hey, Spock.”

“There you are. I did see you over speaking with Christine.”

“Oh.” So much for being incognito. “Was trying to avoid the asshole.”

“You are a harsh judge of Finnegan.”

“You might as well say it’s sunny outside, because yep, that’s a fact. He’s been a pain in the ass to me since day one when he tripped me in the aisle of our first class together.” Jim grimaced. “The bigger question is why a guy like you, as brilliant as you are, would give that guy the time of day.”

Spock inclined his head. “I will agree that he can be…”

“The biggest douche bag.”

“I was going to say tedious,” Spock replied with some amusement. “But he has his positive side as well.”

Jim stared at Spock incredulous. He shook his head and then smiled as a waitress appeared. “Coffee lots of it. And the biggest cheeseburger you have. With fries.”

“Is this as a result of your bad day?” Spock asked, when she had moved away from their booth.

“Yeah. I mean, none of it was my finest moment. But that first few hours of that assignment was just a disaster. I’m pretty sure if we are ever on a real landing party together one of us will die. Probably me because Finnegan will think everything’s a great big joke and shove me in front of a giant Jim eating monster or something.”

Spock arched a brow.

“I swear. Imagine being partnered with a guy who yucks it up all the time.”

“Yucks it up?”

“Yeah. Yuck-Yuck-Yuck. That’s what his laugh sounds like. The assignment is on this hostile planetary simulation. We’re to take turns being in charge of the landing party and there’s this holodeck thing that throws stuff at us. Like you know old-time army games or something. Only me and him are real, the others are holograms for the assignment, but you’re still supposed to make sure everyone survives the ordeal, including the fake people. Finnegan doesn’t take any of it seriously. When someone is captured or killed, he just laughs and says, ‘It’s all fake anyway” and I finally just had enough of his stupid attitude and decked him. While we were fighting, the rest of the crew of the landing party was decimated and Lucas threatened to fail us both.” Jim sighed. He smiled as the waitress returned with his coffee. “Thanks.”

“It does sound like a difficult situation.”

“I’m pretty sure you would have taken Finnegan out yourself. Anyway, Lucas said we could take it again tomorrow. I asked that I be given a new partner.” Jim waved his hand. “You know the rest. And seeing Pike…well, I can imagine what he thinks of me now.”

“He still greatly admires you.”

Jim laughed. “Uh-huh.”

“He does,” Spock assured him. “He does think you used poor judgement in Lucas’ exercise, though. But he is correct when stating that it is a requirement of all Starfleet officers to get along with their peers.”

“Yeah.”

“As a future captain, there will be members of your own crew that might not be your favorite people, but you must learn to accept and deal with them.”

“I know, Spock. But that asshole’s never going to be on my crew.”

“I bow to your good judgment. What are your plans for this evening?”

Jim smiled. “Got a date with a hot babe. Or a couple of them.”

“I see.”

“You remember that Caitian lovely we met a few months back? She contacted me and I guess she has a sister.”

“Indeed. How…nice for you.”

“What about you, Spock? What are your plans?”\Spock sipped his tea serenely just as Jim’s cheeseburger arrived.

“I guess you’re probably studying or something, right?”

“Not tonight. I, too, have a date.”

Jim had just taken a big bite, so he chewed and swallowed. “You…do?”

“Yes with Finnegan.”

Jim was dumbfounded and his chest hurt too. He rubbed it. Must be the cheeseburger giving him indigestion.

“Finnegan?”

“Indeed, Sean. We are going to see a movie. Just before you came he asked and I accepted.”

“Finnegan?”

“Yes, Jim. While I am aware you are not fond of him, he does have his charms.”

“He does? Mind telling me what those are?”

“Jim,” Spock said reproachfully. “I hope you enjoy your date.”

“Yeah,” Jim said mulishly. “You too.”

This is a mishmosh of two ideas

“Spock? Spock, are you in here?”

Spock froze from his position under the desk in the corner of the study room.

Only an hour ago, he had come across Cadet Kirk in this very room.

“Hi.” Kirk had given him a sunny, though clearly confused smile. “Uh. I booked this room to study here for two hours.”

“I am afraid there must be some mistake,” Spock replied. “I reserved this space for a small group of science students.”

“Shoot.” Kirk had taken out his PADD and swiped his thumb across the screen with startling speed. “That’s so strange because it does say I booked it. Today.”

Spock opened his mouth to say he supposed it was possible to have his group meet elsewhere when Kirk gave him that sunny smile again.

“You know what? Forget it. I don’t really need it. I can go study in my dorm. I’ll just put my earphones on and ignore my roommate.”

“If you are certain…”

“Sure, no worries. See you later, Spock.”

During that last hour, disaster had struck at the Academy. Word had come through that there was an active maniac, as Pike had called him, roaming the campus firing his phaser and calling for Spock.

He knew the maniac. It was a student named Marius whom Spock had failed. Spock had always suspected Marius was unstable and now he knew that to be the case.

Spock hadn’t had time to evacuate so he had hunkered down here. With the door closed and locked. But somehow…

“Cadet Kirk! What are you doing? You were advised to evacuate.”

“I came for you.”

Kirk crouched down next to Spock, phaser raised protectively, as he placed himself directly in front of Spock under the desk.

“Cadet Kirk—

“Shh. We’re supposed to be quiet, Spock. We don’t want to alert him to where we are.”

Spock almost pointed out that Kirk had been the one shouting his name upon entering, but he closed his mouth. He was still startled speechless anyway that Kirk had placed himself directly in firing range should Marius make his way into the room.

Spock didn’t know how long they stayed that way. Hours, he thought. Though he was certainly rattled because his brain would not compute the time. His heart thumped in his side, not just from fear, though there was an element of that, but from the nearness of Spock’s crush.

Up until the moment Kirk had come flying in to protect him, Spock had not guessed that his feelings were in any way returned. Now he knew better.

Spock’s communicator chirped into the sudden silence and to their credit, neither one of them jumped. He saw it was Captain Pike.

“All clear, Spock. Marius has been apprehended.”

“That is good to hear, Captain.”

“Where are you?”

“Study Room 23. I advised my students who were to meet me here to evacuate instead.” Spock glanced at Kirk. “Cadet Kirk is with me.”

“Jim? What’s he doing there?”

Kirk smiled at Spock. Spock stared at him.

“Spock?”

“We have a date, Captain.”

“A date? You and Kirk?”

Spock leaned in close to capture Kirk’s lips with his, just as Kirk moved closer to him. He closed his eyes as Kirk’s warm lips slanted over his.

“Spock? Jim?”

Kirk shook his head, took the communicator from Spock and said, “Spock’s safe and sound, sir. Kirk out.” He closed it. Moved closer to Spock until he was almost in his lap, even squished as they were under the desk. “Where were we?” Spock put his hand on the back of Jim’s neck as he drew him back into a kiss. “Right here.”

Flash Fic, September 23, 2021

This is actually taking several suggestions given to me and making it one fic.

This is going to start today and finish Monday and Wednesday of next week. This one is from Pike’s POV. The other two are from Spock and Kirk.

This is AOS but I used Finnegan’s picture from TOS

“There are two cadets waiting to see you, Captain.”

Christopher Pike looked up from the reports he had been surveying into the steady, calm gaze of Ensign Marks.

“Oh? Did they have an appointment, Helen?”

“No, sir. But they do insist it’s important.”

“Who are these Cadets?” he asked with no little suspicion. She was starting to look far too amused.

“Cadet Kirk and Cadet Finnegan.”

He glanced over at Spock, who was assisting him with the reports, and sat in an oversized chair in front of his desk.

“Give us five minutes, Helen, and then bring them in.”

“Yes, Captain.”

When she had departed, he turned back to Spock.

“Explanation?”

Spock arched a brow. “I know nothing, sir.”

“Nothing? Jim didn’t inform you he was intending to come here this afternoon?”

“He did not. Cadets Kirk and Finnegan have been assigned to work together on an away mission simulation by Professor Lucas. I believe today was their first day.”

Pike frowned. “Lucas? Should I send for him?”

Spock shrugged.

He gave Spock a look before Ensign Marks returned with the two cadets in tow.

Both looked worse for wear. Spock was studying Jim’s appearance, but honestly Pike thought Finnegan looked worse.

Jim had a cut lip that was covered in dried blood and another cut on his forehead up over his right eye. Finnegan’s left eye was black and blue, there was a large ugly red bruise on his jaw, and a sling on his arm.

“What can we do for you…gentlemen?”

Jim’s gaze strayed briefly to Spock, then back to Pike’s. “We’d like to be let out of this assignment.”

Pike leaned back in his chair. “Why?”

It was Finnegan who snarled, “Because Kirk’s an insufferable immature, arrogant jerk.”

“I am? You’re the one who—

“Cadet.” Spock spoke softly but curtly and Jim closed his mouth immediately though Pike could tell he wasn’t at all happy about it.

Pike made sure they saw his displeasure. “Why come to me with this petty business? Why not go to Professor Lucas?”

“Lucas refused to excuse us from the assignment, sir. Or give us new partners. He suggested if we had a problem with that we seek out you.” Jim paused. “Sir.”

“And I suggest you get out of my office and stop bothering me. You’re going to find out, Cadets, there are many throughout your Starfleet careers that you will intensely dislike. It is your job, a requirement in fact, that you learn to deal with it and work together for the greater good. This, I am sure, is why Lucas refused your request. Out of my office.”

Kirk through one last nasty glance at Finnegan, who winked in the direction of Spock, and then turned on his heel and left. But not without shoving Finnegan as they went through the door.

Pike sighed. “Jim’s a friend of yours.”

“Indeed.” Spock paused. “They…both are.”

This did surprise Pike. “Finnegan?”

“He has his…charms.”

“I’ll take your word for it. I strongly suggest you advise your friends it is in their best interests to complete their assignment.”

“Yes, Captain.”
