“You have been very preoccupied of late,” Spock ventured to say over a chess game with his captain.

Jim looked up from the chessboard. He was looking at Spock, but there was a definite sort of distracted, vacant look in his blue eyes that rather unnerved Spock.

Over the last few days he had been considering confessing the dept of his regard for Jim, but his captain’s recent behavior did not encourage such a conversation.

Logically, Spock doubted that he was the cause of Jim’s off behavior. But he could not be one hundred percent certain either.

Whatever or whoever the cause was, Spock was concerned.

Jim smiled but it turned into a sort of grimace as he picked up and then put down his chess piece. Then he leaned back and sighed.

“Sorry, Spock, not really into chess right now.”

“I can see that. If you would like to discuss whatever is occupying your thoughts, I am more than happy to listen.”

The smile he got this time was a little more genuine but also more distant. “Nah, it’s-it’s nothing. Um. How are you, anyway?”

“Me, Captain?”

“Yeah. You know with Uhura. The-the breakup.” Jim scrunched up his face and then shook his head. “That did happen right?”

“Yes. We are no longer in a relationship. So far, there has been no difficulties for either of us.”

Jim nodded, but Spock got the distinct impression Jim wasn’t even listening to him.

“Good. I’m uh I’m going to go back to my quarters. I’m sorry, Spock. I know I’m being weird. I’m just…I have a lot on my mind right now.”

“Jim…”

He smiled again, shook his head, and headed for the door to exit Spock’s quarters.

And he was gone like that before Spock could say more.

Spock closed his eyes and sighed.

Jim approached the café where he was meeting his new boyfriend for lunch. It was a warm sunny day and he was very much hoping he could convince his boyfriend to eat outside.

Sunglasses firmly in place, Jim stepped into the entryway for the restaurant. Of course his boyfriend was already waiting.

He smiled. “Hi Spock. Been waiting long?”

“Only ten minutes.”

“Mind if we have an outdoor table?”

“No, that is fine.”

After they were seated, Jim noticed Spock was eying him rather than the menu. Pushing away his nervousness, he smiled.

“Something wrong?”

“I do not believe so.”

“Made up your mind about your food already?”

“No.” Spock paused. “Jim. May I see your eyes.”

Jim tried laughing it off. “What? Why?”

“Jim.”

He sighed. Took off his sunglasses and waited.

“You have a black eye.”

“Yeah.”

“You have been fighting again.” The reproach was there. Oh, yes, it was.

“Geez, Spock, you make it sound like a frequent thing.”

Spock pursed his lips, picked up his menu and said, “Is it not?”

“No. I mean sure, since we’ve been seeing each other there have been three times but…” Jim put his sunglasses back on. “I’m not like that.”

Spock remained silent, continuing to look at his menu.

Jim’s heart was pounding painfully. “You-you’re rethinking this, aren’t you?”

“Lunch?” Spock murmured.

“No and you know that’s not what I mean. Us.”

Spock put down his menu. “May I inquire as to the nature of this particular latest skirmish?”

Jim bit his lip. Then winched. He’d forgotten it was slightly split. “Some guy said some stupid shit and I hit him and his friends jumped me and it went from there.”

“Stupid shit,” Spock repeated.

“Yeah.”

“About me.”

Jim nodded and looked away.

“Jim, give me your hand.”

He glanced at Spock, then put out his hand which Spock took in his.

“First, no, I am not.”

Jim frowned.

“Rethinking us.”

“Okay. Good because…”

“I do not care what they say about me.”

“Words have power.”

“Only if you allow them to, which I do not. And I would never wish for you to be put in harm’s way over thoughtless words spoken by those who are meaningless to us.”

“But—”

“I ask that next time, you simply walk away and contact me. We will discuss their words or their inferior thinking or the weather or what we plan to do later that day. Anything but engaging in violent confrontations. And if I am not available because I am instructing a class or in a meeting, I ask that you walk away anyway and wait for me.”

Jim closed his eyes, sighed, and nodded. “Okay.”

“Ashaya. Remove those glasses and look at me. I wish to see your beautiful eyes, even if they are damaged.”

Jim smiled a little and took the glasses off and set them on the table. “Are you hungry?”

“Not particularly.”

“Me either. And if I am later, we can order something to be delivered. Let’s get out of here. I just want to go home and be with you.”

Spock squeezed his hand. “I concur.”

They got up and left, telling the hostess as they left that they wouldn’t be staying. And side by side, they walked home.

He was pretty sure based on the way his leg was twisted and bent beneath him that it was broken. He was also certain he had a pretty nasty head wound. Warm blood still flowed from it.

And no one was around.

He honestly figured this was it. The end. Again.

He’d died before and it felt like this. Hopeless. Painful. Over.

He sucked in a painful breath that caused him to cough and blood splurted from his mouth. Great. Just…

Strange bell-like sound and then—

“Enterprise, I’ve found the captain. Two to beam up.”

His eyes closed as Spock leaned over him.

His eyes opened as Bones leaned over him.

“How are you feeling?”

“Pretty terrible.”

A nod.

“It’s okay, Jim. You’re going to be okay.”

“Yeah?”

And then Bones moved away and it was Spock leaning over him.

Jim smiled weakly. “Hey thanks.”

“Your thanks are not necessary.”

“Still. Bones says…gonna live. You saved…”

Spock kissed his forehead. “Rest and save your strength, t’hy’la.”

He frowned as Spock moved away.

Bones reappeared. “What’s the matter?”

“Did Spock just kiss me?”

Flash Fic, June 05, 2020

“Want me to come with you?”

Jim glanced at Bones. He was tempted to say yes. He really was. Or even say, no you go in my place. But that wouldn’t really work, would it?

“No.” He sighed. “I have to do this. And on my own.”

Uhura made a snorting noise causing him to look her way. Sure enough she was smirking at him.

“It’s not that bad, Captain.”

“Hmm.”

“Seriously. I did it. I’m in one piece.”

Jim grimaced as he saw Spock gesturing to him. “Damn it, it’s time.”

Uhura laughed out right. He gave her a look. She punched his arm.

“Good luck, farm boy.”

“Oh shut up.”

He didn’t move so Bones pushed him toward Spock. He turned around and glared at both of them.

Stumbled over to Spock, who was now giving him his classic bitchy Spock look. That did not bode well.

“Hi.” His voice squeaked. He cleared his throat, deepened his voice and said, “Hello.”

Spock was unimpressed. “Are you ready?”

“Sure?”

Spock blinked at him, but turned to the door, which he knocked upon. It was opened so quickly, Jim was sure the occupant had been waiting on the other side.

“Father, may I present my mate, James Kirk.”

This comes from a prompt from J, but I like it and might try to somehow work it into the Best Friends universe, if I can make it work. I might have to tweak it or something as it’s been a while since I read that story: Best Friends. But I think it can work. Anyway, here you go…

“What do you want?” Spock asked his brother, Sybok. Spock was standing on the terrace of their father’s home overlooking the mountains and the city in the distance.

“Well.” Sybok shrugged. “I thought you might like to talk.”

Spock gave him the side eye. “About what?”

Sybok came to stand next to him and looked down to where Spock’s gaze was fixed on the level below. A young blond human laughed, conversing with another.

“The birds and the bees.”

“What?”

“You know. The birds and the bees.”

“I do not know what you are talking about.”

Sybok sighed. “Sex.”

Spock glanced quickly at him, expression carefully blank. “I know about sex, brother. I am not a child.”

Sybok’s lips turned upward. “At least I got your attention. If it helps, I’m fairly certain T’Pring is no more interested in maintaining your ill-advised bond than you are.”

As they both watched, the blond human suddenly glanced up, smiled, and waved at them. Spock, before he had a chance to think otherwise, returned the wave. But he regretted instantly, his cheeks warming, as the blond human winked.

Spock moved away from the edge of the terrace.

“He likes you too.”

“I do not know what you are referring to,” Spock said, primly.

“No?” Sybok asked. “Oh. Well, then. If you are not interested in James Kirk, then I will…”

“No,” Spock said quickly, his voice coming out in a snarl.

Which only caused his brother to laugh. “Yeah, I knew you knew what I meant.” Sybok looked over the edge. “I think he’s coming up here.”

“He is?” Spock’s heart began to race.

“Yes, he’s headed to the stairs leading up here. Shall I leave you two alone or do I need to chaperone?”

“I am not a child,” Spock insisted again.

“And you’re sure you don’t need the sex talk?’

Spock took a step toward him. “Leave.”

Sybok held out his hands. “I’m going, I’m going.” Just as he turned away, he spotted James Kirk at the top of the staircase and his brother, wringing his hands, waiting anxiously. Sybok grinned and went back inside.

The turbolift suddenly lurched and stopped abruptly.

Jim frowned and looked at the controls. “What the hell?”

“Perhaps if you let me look—”

“Yeah, because you know so much more about it,” Jim snapped. His headache had just gotten way worse. He stepped aside and gestured. “Go ahead, Mr. Spock. You’re the expert on everything.”

Spock gave him a look but wisely said nothing as he moved in place to the controls.

It was just the two of them in the lift. And they’d been bickering all day prior to this.

Jim smirked as Spock stepped back. “Can’t fix it?”

“No,” Spock replied, clearly reluctant to admit defeat.

Jim went to the comm. “Kirk to Engineering.”

There was no response. In fact, it was as though the comm didn’t work at all. He hit again.

“Captain, I am certain that pounding on it to oblivion will not make it work.”

He shot Spock a look.

“This sucks.”

“We are in obvious agreement on that.”

Jim mumbled, “Well, at least you agree with me on something.”

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“I believe you referenced something about agreeing with you.”

“If you heard me, then why say what? Geez.”

“Explain.”

Jim folded  his arms across his chest. “Listen, mister, don’t take that superior, commanding, snooty-ass tone with me.”

“Snooty-ass is nonsensical.”

“Oh, yeah? Well so are your ears.”

Spock’s mouth opened and closed.

“Aha! Finally got you to shut up,” Jim said, triumphantly. Okay maybe he was being a bit childish. And definitely surly but…

“That begs the question.”

“Begs what question?”

Spock arched a brow. “How do I get you to finally shut up?”

“Are you…you know what…that’s it.”

Jim launched himself at Spock, pushing the Vulcan against the bulkhead. Spock’s eyes widened just before Jim’s mouth slammed down on his. Spock made a little bit of a squeal noise and then began to return Jim’s kiss.

The turbolift began to operate again, but Jim and Spock paid it no heed, continuing the frantic slide of mouth against mouth.

The doors slid open on their floor.

There was resounding applause.

“About damn time!” Uhura exclaimed.

Jim reluctantly tore his mouth from Spock’s and they both turned to look out at the crowd gathered on the deck. They were still clinging to each other.

“Uh.”

Uhura smirked at them. “Congratulations.”

“Nyota, did you stop the turbolift?” Spock asked.

“No, well, technically it was Scotty.” She laughed. “We were all sick of you two.”

“I feel…manipulated.”

Jim cleared his throat. “What do you say we discuss this in my quarters, Mr. Spock?”

Spock inclined his head. “Yes, Captain. We are, once more, in agreement.”

Flash Fic, May 15, 2020

Spock sat before the terminal in the captain’s quarters. In the corner by the closet, Jim was pulling off his command tunic and undershirt, and reaching into the drawer for a T-Shirt.

“Hey, babe?”

And that still took some getting used to. It was not unpleasant. Not at all. But the casual way Jim used an endearment for him was…exhilarating in a way he wouldn’t have imagined.

Curious.

It did not matter whether Jim called him babe, baby, honey, sweetheart, or whatever silly thing he came up with, Spock liked it. And he found that he liked it, craved it even, was completely and utterly illogical.

“Yes, Jim?”

“You think the crew knows about us?”

Spock paused before he answered, choosing instead to watch as Jim struggled into his T-Shirt, admiring the exposed chest and abdomen of his lover.

“Spock?” Now Jim smirked at him, clearly noticing Spock’s admiration.

“You refer to their obvious observation of us earlier in the mess room?”

“Uh-huh.”

“Yes, I suspect that at least some of them have surmised we are together.”

“Does that bother you?”

“Not in the least. Does it you?”

“Nah. I mean they were going to find out eventually. I’m not going to want it to be a secret.” Jim came over to the desk and looked down at what Spock was doing. “Reports?”

“They are past due.”

Jim sighed. “I know. But you shouldn’t have to do them for me. I can do them if you want to move.”

“I don’t mind attending to them, ashayam. Go ahead and have your video conference with your mother. I will work on these.”

“Yeah?”

“Of course.”

“Ashayam? That’s new. What is it?”

“It is…babe.”

Flash Fic, May 08, 2020

When I woke up this morning, you were gone.

I guess I thought that this time you would stay. But as I opened my eyes there was a dent in the pillow where your head used to lie. I reached over and touched the spot where only last night you had fallen asleep after we loved each other. There was no warmth there. You had left long ago.

I turned to lie on my back, staring at the ceiling and wondering what I had done to send you away this time. Did I say too much? Was I too needy? I tried to hold back but then…I could not. Not really.

Is that why you left?

A noise within the apartment catches my attention, and I turned my head to look at the open door. It is the sound of pans clanging together.

Scrambling out of bed, I pull on my robe, slip my feet into the slippers at the edge of the bed, and leave the bedroom.

The scent of waffles and orange tea waft over me. Your back is to me, but I would know it anywhere. A thousand miles away and I would know those shoulders. That hair.

You turn then and smile.

My heart begins to race in my side.

You are here.

Jim.”

Jim, the human boy, was skittish, and Spock supposed he could not blame him, considering what Spock had learned had happened to him. And to the others.

Not that there were a lot of survivors that had been brought to Vulcan. And most that were, were young like Jim.

This human boy jumped at everything, which cause Spock to feel sorry for him. He had obviously been through a lot.

“Come, Jim. It is only a little farther.”

Jim’s steps faltered. “Where?”

“My home. As I said, you can bathe and eat and become warm again.”

Jim shivered though it was not cold. “Not sure I will ever be warm.”

“You will be safe there,” Spock promised.

“Your house?”

“Yes, Jim.”

“And I get to stay there?” he asked shyly.

“Yes.”

Jim took a step forward, then stopped again. “You sure?”

Spock nodded. “My father has a habit of fostering children. There is already an older human female in our household. My mother is human. Do not worry, you will be welcome.”

But still Jim hesitated so Spock reached out his hand in a gesture probably most Vulcans would not do. But Spock was not most.

Jim blinked and put his hand in Spock’s and Spock led him to the house and inside.
