Flash Fic Friday, September 15, 2017

My prompt was “We need to talk” from Spock, leading Jim to believe the worst.

“We need to talk.”

Cryptic and ominous words thrown Jim’s way just before the shift began.

And now they were almost all he could think about.

All they were doing was star mapping at present. So Jim was sitting there in his captain’s chair wondering what in the world Spock had meant.

It had to be bad. Those four words never led to anything good.

Maybe Spock wanted to leave Starfleet after all. He’d learned well after the fact that Spock’s break up with Uhura had been because he intended to go to New Vulcan to help with the rebuilding of the race. He’d apparently changed his mind but it was quite possible even probable he had changed it back.

According to Bones, the scuttlebutt on the ship was that Spock and Uhura had briefly reconciled after his rescue of her on Altamid but that by the time the Enterprise had been rebuilt with the ‘A” added, things had cooled between them once more. Uhura wanted more emotional attachment than Spock had been prepared to give.  There were even whispers that Uhura was seeing Scotty now.

Which meant there was absolutely nothing to keep Spock on the Enterprise.

What was Jim going to do without Spock? Could he beg Spock to stay? Hell, Jim had never begged anyone for anything in his life and he certainly wasn’t about to fucking start now.

Jim stood. “Spock, you have the conn,” he called over his shoulder as he entered the turbolift. He gave the order for the medbay.

Bones was with a crew member when Jim first stepped inside the medbay so with a vague smile at the nurse on duty, Jim went to wait for his friend in his office. He wasn’t even sure what he expected Bones to say, but he needed an ear right now. Or a shoulder, maybe.

But apparently whatever was going on with his patient was more complicated than he realized, so Jim ended up leaving the medbay without ever seeing Bones.

He returned to the bridge, conscious of Spock’s stare as he sat fidgeting in his chair.

Another few hours passed when he was commed by Bones.

“Jim, you wanted to see me?”

“No, never mind,” he said quickly. He certainly couldn’t talk here.

“If you’re sick—“

Jim heard Spock get out of his seat and walk over to stand next to him. He glanced at his first officer. “No, Bones. Not sick.”

“A headache?” Bones guessed.

“No, no, nothing. I’ll talk to you later.” He cut Bones off mid-word.

“Are you unwell, Captain?” Spock asked. “You did leave the bridge rather abruptly.”

“I’m fine, Commander.” He gave Spock a reassuring cocky smile.

When his shift was finally over, Jim raced for the turbolift shutting it in Sulu’s face so he could get away from Spock. He felt a bit guilty about it but not too bad. The longer he delayed hearing that Spock was leaving him, er, the Enterprise the better.

The first place Spock would look for him was his quarters so Jim hid out in Engineering. If Scotty found it odd he suddenly had a new assistant for a few hours he didn’t say so.

Finally, he was too exhausted not to head for his quarters but as he went down the corridors, he looked around every corner to be sure Spock wasn’t lurking, waiting for him.

He closed and locked his door once inside with a great deal of relief.

Thank God on this new Enterprise he didn’t have to share a bathroom with Spock.

Jim took a quick shower and dressed in loose fitting soft cotton pajama bottoms and a thin T-shirt. And when he removed his shirt, he remembered he had something to give to Spock. He couldn’t believe he’d forgotten it and hadn’t already given it to his first officer.

He removed the holo pic from his drawer and looked down at the picture of Spock with his mother. He was probably about twelve or thirteen in the picture and he looked so very Vulcan. His mother was smiling but of course Spock was not.

His door chimed and without even thinking about it, he called, “Come in.”

And of course it was Spock.

Damn it!

He set the holo picture down for the moment and turned to his stoic first officer.

“Look, I-I know what you’re going to say,”

Spock blinked at him. “You do?”

“Yeah.” He blew out a breath. “I was hoping it wouldn’t come to this. I’ve been afraid ever since I heard you and Uhura broke up for good.”

“I…see.”

“And you have to do what you have to do, I get it, but I really wish you wouldn’t,” Jim said softly. “I don’t know what I’ll do if you do.”

Something shuddered behind Spock’s dark eyes. “I do not need to do it.”

“Yeah?” Relief flowed through him and he smiled wide. “Really? I was so sure you were going to.”

“It was never my intention to upset you or make you feel uncomfortable with my declaration, Captain.”

“Ever since you said we needed to talk I’ve been freaking out.”

Spock straightened. Became stiffer still. “There is no need to freak out. I am Vulcan and can put aside my feelings in this matter so that I will suffer no emotional compromise.”

“Oh. Well. Damn.” Jim put his hand on his stomach. He was feeling queasy again. “If-if it means so much to you, I won’t stop you.”

“Captain—”

Jim looked away. “It’s selfish, I know. I just…I don’t want you to leave. I’ve told you before I don’t know what I’d do without you, and hell, I know that’s way too needy.”

“Leave? You want me to leave?”

Jim’s eyes widened as he looked back at Spock. “No! Never. But if you want to, it’s wrong of me to stop you.” He swallowed. “There were so many times when Uhura held you to her with emotional manipulation. I hated it. You never deserved that. And I can’t be like that. I would never hold you here if you didn’t want to be.”

“I do not understand.”

“Well neither do I!” Jim exclaimed. “It’s just that I love you and—” He slapped his hand over his mouth the second he realized what he’d said. But it was too late. Spock had clearly heard. There was no mistaking it. He lowered his hand and opened his mouth to say ‘totally in a brotherly way’.

But then Spock was suddenly kissing him, devouring him, pushing him against the bulkhead of the ship, with such fervor, such need, that Jim knew then that Spock didn’t view him at all as a brother.

Thank God.

A long time later, Jim stirred in Spock’s arms. “Does this mean you aren’t leaving?”

“It was never my intention to leave.”

“Well. What did you want to talk about?”

“I wished to ascertain whether you were in agreement to begin a romantic relationship with me,” Spock said in his snootiest voice.

Jim laughed. “Oh. Well. I guess you have your answer.”

“Indeed.”

“Hey. I have something for you.” He slipped out of Spock’s arms and patted naked over to his desk where he’d left the picture. He brought it over to Spock. “They found this in the wreckage of the ship and gave it to me when they were giving me some of the crew’s personal effects.”

Spock’s hands closed over it wistfully. “I thought it lost forever.” He paused. “Like her.”

“Oh, honey.” Jim hugged him.

Spock pulled him tight against him. “You have given her back to me in this small way. And you have given me the greatest gift I could ever imagine in you.”

“I love you,” Jim whispered. “I think…I’ve always loved you.”

Spock kissed him. Put his hand over Jim’s heart. “Taluhk nash-veh k’dular, t’hy’la.”

Some More Ramblings This Week

So recent movies.

I saw The Dark Tower. I didn’t mind it. I thought it was pretty decent, actually. Maybe because I hadn’t read the books, who knows. But I and those that went with me thought it was getting a bad rap. We all liked it fine.

The Hitman’s Bodyguard. Hilarious. Lots of violence and bad language so if that’s not your thing, skip it. But Samuel and Ryan were funny as hell in it. The one weakness to me was Salma. I’ve liked her in other things but to me her character didn’t work. But otherwise quite good.

Last night we saw Wind River. It was written by the same writer who did Hell or High Water. I’ve come to the conclusion he really thinks the lives of poor people suck bad. And that’s probably true. But it’s hard to have hope in his movies of ever improving that sucky life. It was very well done but very depressing. The murder/assault scene was disturbing, though not really overly graphic. Graphic enough though. It’s a move that I think will stay with me for a while.

It comes next. I am sure none of you will be running out to see that! Ha. I don’t really find clowns that creepy. When I was a kid there was a period of time my mother collected clown related stuff. Statues of Emmett Kelley and paintings and such. She even had some ornaments. I don’t like them myself but I don’t find them really frightening. That being said the previews for It are terrifying! I can’t wait to see it, lol.

We are actually in the 70s today! Can I get a hallelujah?! HA HA

So far this week besides my guest sex chapter, I have updated What Happened to Spock and When I Fall in Love. Unlike last week I will have a flash up on Friday.

Today I had my Health Screening at work. It’s something they do every year to give you credits toward the costs of your benefits. You have to certify you don’t smoke (my company takes my word for it, M’s makes you do a swab!), get a flu shot (something I have done for years due to asthma), have your BMI done, Blood Pressure checked, and your glucose and cholesterol.

My BP was still too high even with the medicine I take at 130/84. But everything else was great. So yay! I can live for a while longer!

Guest Writing

Recently I helped my friend, AppreciativeOne (JJ on here) with her work on AO3,  Shore Leave: Irongate Wilderness. I guest wrote her most recent chapter, 6, if you want to check it out.

Ramblings of the Week, September 11, 2017

Had a pretty nice weekend. The Muppets at the Bowl were fun. Saw a few celebrities including Ty Burrell from Modern Family and composer Paul Williams. He wrote The Rainbow Connection for Muppets (as well as the music for the Muppet’s Christmas Carol) as well as several very well known songs like the Carpenters’ We’ve Only Just Begun.

And then Sunday we met a friend for brunch. Ate way too much. But it was nice.

I did manage to get the conclusion of First Impressions done despite my vow to take a break. Thanks for checking it out as I know most of you did.

I don’t have any idea what I will work on this week as far as writing goes. I need to get a new chapter of What Happened to Spock done but I am stuck on it. It’s one of those works I wish I had never started because I have written myself into a bit of a corner. I tried to write on something today but without any success I guess. I thought it was pretty good, but apparently it was not, so I am feeling very low.

So, I just don’t know. I ended up reading at lunch instead.

Sixteen years ago, of course, our country changed. I remember spending days on end crying after that day. Hearing all the stories about the people who died. And watching all the news coverage. For those of us that experienced it as adults it’s not something we can ever forget.

Happy Star Trek Day

Ramblings of the Week, September 04th

As most of you know, our AC was out and in the middle of the biggest heat wave we’ve had in a long ass time.

So we got an appointment for someone to come in and fix it and M took the day off, Thursday, to have it fixed.

FYI, Wednesday night was the most miserable night ever.

Anyway, so they were supposed to come at 10:30 on Thursday but apparently two teenaged boys arrived, according to reports! LOL.

They had no idea what they were doing I guess and ended up leaving without doing squat. The access onto the roof is in a neighbor’s yard and their ladder wouldn’t reach otherwise.

We then spent like an hour and a half driving all over looking for a portable AC but with the heatwave everyone was sold out!

So Thursday evening the neighbor contacted us and said of course they can go in. So we made ANOTHER appointment for Friday. From 2 to 5 and since I was getting off early for the holiday weekend we took the appointment.

I went on Amazon and ordered a portable for our bedroom anyway.  Paid for it to be delivered Saturday because I was taking NO CHANCES.

Dude didn’t show up Friday until almost 6 but he was an adult and knew what he was doing! Yay. Fixed it (needed a starter) and we had the best night sleep we’d had all week. Plus I now have a back up if anything goes wrong

This week is a short work week. On Saturday night we head to the Hollywood Bowl for The Muppets Take the Bowl and Firework Finale. Should be fun. We love the Bowl.

I hope to get a few things updated this week but I won’t say what so that no one blames me if their favorite didn’t make it!

Enjoy!

Flash Fic Friday, September 01, 2017

Something a little different for this week’s flash fic. I had wanted a really simple prompt as I was getting started late and there is so much going on right now. My friend, Kris, gave me the prompt that Spock is standing on a rock and Jim asks him what has his attention. But you know simple doesn’t always get that way when my imagination takes off and suddenly I knew there was way more to this than the scenario Kris gave me.

So while this week’s flash fic is indeed what she gave me, this is actually also a sneak peak on an upcoming much longer fic that I will be writing. At this point in the story, things are definitely “Pre-Slash”. This takes place after Beyond and the repair/rebuilding of the new Enterprise.

Jim smiled at the message he had just received. He looked around the immediate area of the planet they were surveying and didn’t see anything of particular interest.

He typed back, Can’t wait to see you too. Counting the hours until shore leave.

“Jim.” Bones slapped Jim on the shoulder, so he put away his device. “Look. Maybe you ought to go talk to Spock.”

“Huh? Why? What’s wrong with Spock?”

“His break up with Uhura is very recent.”

Jim shrugged. “They’ve broken up before. In fact, let’s see. They sort of broke up after the volcano. Then they broke up just before Altamid. They got back together both times. I think I heard about a time or two before I even met them, too. I’m guessing they’ll hit the sheets again within the week.”

Bones made a face. “I don’t need that image. But nope. This time I’ve heard it’s for good. This breakup was much more serious. He’s probably depressed.”

“Vulcans don’t get depressed.”

“He’s half human, Jim. Just, you know, try. You should take an interest in your crew and definitely your senior officers.”

Jim blew out a breath, and turned around to locate Spock. He was standing on a rock, tricorder in hand, eyebrows furrowed in extreme concentration.

“You really think they broke up for good?”

“Far be it from me to listen to ship’s rumors, but that’s what the scuttlebutt is.”

Jim crossed his arms in front of his chest and tapped his fingers on his arm. “Do you know what happened?”

“You mean who initiated the breakup?”

“Uh-huh. After the volcano, it was her. He was the one before Altamid due to the whole Vulcan baby thing. So, who was it this time?” Jim wondered.

Bones shrugged. “Does it matter?”

“Doctor McCoy, can you come over here? Jensen’s pricked his finger on a plant,” Sulu called to them.

Bones rolled his eyes. “My work is never done.”

Jim studied Spock after Bones walked away to work on Jensen. He didn’t look particularly wrecked by the breakup to Jim. His communication device chimed so he withdrew it from his pocket. Sure enough it was another message from Areel Shaw. The Enterprise had shore leave in only two weeks and it just so happened to be on a planet Areel currently resided on while she did some legal work for Starfleet. She would be getting time off while Jim was there so they planned to spend Jim’s shore leave time together having fun in the sun and in bed, of course. It was just a confirmation of what he’d last said, so he closed it and returned it to his pocket.

He approached Spock’s rock.

“Hello, Mister Spock.”

Spock did not look up from his tricorder. “Captain.”

“Anything interesting?” Jim asked, stepping onto the large rock, and peering over Spock’s shoulder.

“Actually, yes. This rock is multi-layered and—”

Jim’s attention immediately drifted elsewhere. He had begun to regret being part of this landing party. Nothing was really that interesting and he had so many reports he was behind on. Admiral Colton had been pestering him to get them all finished before shore leave.

“Captain?”

Jim smiled. “Yes?”

“You were not listening to a word I said.”

“Uh.” He could not really deny it. He hadn’t. And before he could stifle it, a yawn came out. Jim quickly covered it with his hand. But Spock certainly noticed as he eyes narrowed. “Sorry. Lack of sleep. You were saying?”

“Never mind, Captain. Your attention is, no doubt, needed elsewhere.”

He opened his mouth to reply, but Spock had turned his back to Jim in a plain display of dismissal. Jim closed his mouth. Well, fine then. So much for making an effort.

He stepped back off the rock and ordered a beam up for himself. Spock could certainly handle it.
