Jim sat alone at a two-seater table in the corner of a canteen restaurant on Space Station 12. He had his PADD with him, but at that moment he was people watching.
Half-listening for the beep from his PADD when he received a new message. He was waiting for one from Spock.
Theyβd been parted now for nearly four months and it was wearing on him.
Jim hadnβt accepted retirement, but he had accepted that he wouldnβt be captain of a starship anymore. Instead he was acting as the military head of this very space station.
And Spock had taken on the ambassadorial duties of his father when Sarek had been too unwell to complete them. Spock was spending his time between Earth, New Vulcan, and Space Station 12. And it seemed to Jim that his location got the least amount of attention from Spock.
Jim got it. He did. And it wouldnβt be forever.
The blood heβd received from Khan all those years prior had insured he would live a life far more matched to Spockβs and for that he was grateful. But he would very much like to spend that life with Spock more often.
Last time Spock was here, heβd been there only a month before leaving for New Vulcan. Jim had traveled four months ago for a visit with Spock on Earth, for a mere two weeks, and heβd had to return.
He spotted the Human woman the minute sheβd entered the canteen. She was dressed all in shiny silver, a mini skirt with a halter top. Her white hair was pulled back in a pony-tail reminiscent of the way Uhura had once worn hers. Dangling from her ears were large silver hoop earrings. Even her makeup was silver, glittery. And she looked his way.
When she reached him, she sat down without invitation.
βAdmiral Kirk.β
βJody. I wasnβt aware you were on the Station.β Which annoyed him. He should be alerted to all who arrived. Some security.
She smirked. βSorry, sir. I should have let you know I was coming. Youβre alone?β
He shrugged. βUnless youβre sitting on someone very tiny.β
Jody laughed. βYou havenβt changed.β
βDid you expect I would?β
βNo.β She sighed. βWhere is he?β
βIn class. He doesnβt get out for another two hours.β Jim sighed and picked up his coffee cup, taking a sip, then grimacing when it was cold. βHeβll be glad to see you.β
βWhat about you, Jim? Are you glad?β
βThat ship sailed, as you know.β
βTrue. Iβm just passing through. Iβll be on my way tomorrow, so you neednβt worry Iβll overstay my welcome.β
βWhere are you off to?β
βIβve taken a job on Caltos 6. Six-months. I wanted to see my son before I went.β
He nodded. βAs I said, heβll be glad to see you.β
βWhereβs your husband?β
βWorking.β
βYou two, always busy.β
Jody, of course, had been Jimβs mistake before he and Spock ever got together. Back on a place just like this. Yorktown. Theyβd spent a few weeks together pretending to have a romance, Jim supposed. It was only ever sex for him as he loved Spock even back then, but he had liked her.
But then after she left, after it was over, she informed Jim sheβd gotten pregnant. Their son, Thomas, stayed with Jim fulltime. Jody didnβt want to be tied down to a child, sheβd been clear about that, but she did visit Thomas when she could, and they did have a loving if somewhat distant relationship.
βIβm waiting to hear from him now.β
βHeβs coming to the canteen?β
βNo. Heβs on New Vulcan.β
βOh.β She nodded. βIβve got some things to take care of. Can I meet you at Thomasβ school in a couple of hours? Maybe we can have take-out together at your apartment.β
βSure. Okay.β
She smiled, stood, and leaned down to kiss his forehead. βSee you in a bit, Admiral.β
Jody turned around and walked right into a tall, thin Vulcan.
Jim stood up immediately, aware he was grinning like a fool. βSpock!β
Spock arched a brow at Jody and stepped around her to accept Jimβs embrace.
βI was waiting for your message.β
βI decided to surprise you,β Spock said. He looked at Jody. βClearly this is your day to be surprised.β
βNice to see you again, Spock,β Jody said. βDonβt worry I am leaving again tomorrow.β
βI was not, in fact, worried.β
βSheβs going to eat with the family tonight. She wanted to see Tommy before sheβs off on a six-month assignment,β Jim explained.
βShe will be welcome.β
Jody laughed. βDoubtful, but I appreciate the sentiment. I will see you soon.β
Jim watched her walk away. He put his hands on Spockβs arms. βSorry about that. She did surprise me.β
βIt is not your fault. And I am actually glad I will be here for her visit.β
βI donβt think I need protecting from Jody.β
Spock gave him a reproachful look. βI do not think she will attack you, but I wish to be there with my family.β
Jim linked his arm with Spockβs. βAnd we want you there, too. How long are you here this time?β
βFor the foreseeable future, Ashaya.β
And now with Spock beside him, Jim knew he was ready to face anything. Even his sonβs mother.

The twists! I didnβt see any of that coming. First I love the OMS and the pining but how can you not pine? And then bam! You hit us with Jody and Tommy. Excellent. So much for so little. Well done my friend!

Great job! I did not see any of the twists coming. I was just wishing that Spock was there and that they would not be parted! Kept wondering how will this resolve in the short space of a flash?! But you delivered a great ending!
Thank you! Love it!

I find myself thoroughly kiltered.
First of all, I’ve never heard of a canteen restaurant. Cantina, sure. But never canteen. And you flipped that in there like it was the most common thing around.
So I had to look it up. Hmmm.
Anyways, this is awesome. 2 new characters!
I should like to meet this Thomas.
I should not like to ever see Jody again. She reminded me too much of how T’Pring was dressed in Amok Time. That is NOT a point of any kind in Jody’s favor. : P
Great job!

Canteen is more often used in Britain. It’s basically cafeteria to us though canteen is sometimes used for a cafeteria in a military base and since I was using this an “international” universe kinda thing for the military space station I went with canteen! There’s my long ass explanation!
I was actually mildly surprised I didn’t have anyone asking me for a part 2 to see Thomas. I had expected that. I guess I never quite understand what makes people clamor for more LOL
Yes I thought of the B’s outfit too when describing what Jody was wearing!

I’m quite grateful for your long ass explanation, because I needed it and didn’t find anything like that in my short search! I feel more continental already.
I think we were so blown away by this turn of events we didn’t get to the actual asking.
All through reading it I was thinking THIS has to go to AO3.
Jody is quite the opposite of Carol, who insisted on keep David all to herself.
So I think when I calm down from hating Jody, I’d have come back and asked for more. My bp was just still up!
So….here’s your ask. I wanna meet Thomas.
I DO love the skinny Vulcan’s reaction to Jody’s appearance.

Yes see I watch a lot of fictional and true crime shows and some are in England and I’ve heard the policeman say “I got coffee at the canteen” or breakfast or whatever so i was curious and looked it up one day
“A canteen is a store that sells food and drink at an institution like a camp, college, or military base” or “a place in a factory, office, etc., where employees can buy food and meals at a low price” and like I said called a cafeteria mostly for here. Similar idea
Yes after part 2 is written I can see putting it up on AO3. But yes I thought folks would want to see Jim and Spock and their kid, because let’s face it the kid belongs to them not to Jody who does fly by visiting.
Yes the skinny Vulcan is most definitely not impressed by Jody LOL
