And so it begins for November. Family and Gatherings. If sentimental hogwash isn’t your thing, you may want to skip this month and next! HA HA

We gather together to ask the Lordβs blessing
He chastens and hastens his will to make known:
The wicked oppressing now cease from distressing
Sing praises to his name, he forgets not his own.
Jim Kirk smiled faintly as he stood outside the old church, listening to the hymn they sang. It brought back many memories. Good ones this time.
He glanced overhead at the sky, fluffy white with clouds. A perfect Earth day.
A short time later he was aware of the service breaking up, so he stood aside as church members exited the church and waited.
It had slowed to a trickle when he saw her. She was frail, very thin and slightly hunched over. But he would recognize her anywhere.
He stepped out. βGran.β
Her eyes widened and then almost immediately filled with tears. βJim!β
She practically ran into his open arms as he pulled her close, holding her tight against him as she wept.
βThey said you were dead,β she managed to wail out.
βNah.β He tightened his grip.
After a few minutes of crying she finally pulled back but only a little. Her shaky hands touched his cheeks.
βIt is you. Iβd know that beautiful face anywhere.β
He laughed. βOf course itβs me.β
βGranβ was his dadβs mom. As close as heβd ever get to knowing his dad. As a child heβd spent a few summers with her and even a Christmas. She was his favorite person in the whole universe, really.
He linked his arm with hers. βIβm here for a visit.β
βHow long?β
βA week.β
And then Spock appeared, walking toward them.
Gran frowned slightly. βWho is this?β
Spock stopped before them and bowed slightly. βSpock of Vulcan, maβam.β
βVulcan.β She nodded. βIβm sorry for the loss of your planet, young man.β
βThank you.β
She looked from Jim to Spock. βAnd you are?β
βJimβs first officer.β
βHmm. Iβd say youβre more than that. My homeβs right there.β
And it was. Sheβd always had a home right next to the church she attended. She liked to walk there.
A few minutes later, she was letting them into her house.
βAnd here you are at Thanksgiving!β Her eyes lit with joy. βYouβll be staying here of course!β
Jim smiled. βWeβd love to.β
βSharing a room, are you?β She looked pointedly at Spock.
βIf convenient.β
She waved her hand. βIβm old enough to have seen everything, young man. If youβre sweet on my Jim, thatβs good enough for me.β
Spockβs lips twitched. βI am.β
Gran laughed. βGood. Now we can plan our feast.β
βIβll cook for us, Gran. You should rest.β
She snorted. βStuff and nonsense. Weβll cook together.β
βLike old times.β
βYes.β She took his hand and held it. βGeorge would have been so proud of you.β
He leaned in and kissed her cheek. βIβm happy if you are. Thatβs what matters to me.β
She got teary again. βOf course I am. And absolutely thrilled to know you arenβt dead. Iβve lost too many of my boys.β
βI know. Iβm sorry. I should have found a way to let you know.β
She sniffed. βYouβre here now. And itβs going to be quite the party!β
He laughed, kissed her and hugged her again.
βIt sure is.β

Heck yeah bring on the sentimental hogwash. You couldn’t out-sentimental my needs if you tried. I double dog dare you to!
When I was a kid before the Madalyn Murray OβHair took over, at lunch time at school, each class would bring their trays/lunch to the table and remain standing until all the kids got there. A teacher would ring a chime. Everyone would stop talking. And that class would sing their blessing song on the food. Each class had their own song. We LOVED it. I never, in all those years, heard even ONE person say a negative thing about it. Plus we had a devotion and Bible verse over the intercom each morning to start announcements. Again, never heard even ONE negative comment from anyone. Anyway, THIS was one of the songs we sang one year. Brings back such awesome memories.
Especially since I grew up and became a teach and had to do miserable lunch duty. It was miserable. MISERABLE. Kids throwing things on the floor. You ask them to pick it up and they say, THAT’S WHY OUR PARENTS PAY TAXES – TO HIRE A CUSTODIAN TO PICK IT UP! Followed by tables of mocking and laughter, and throwing more stuff in the floor.
Yeah, I’ll take the old ways over that any day. I HATED lunch duty. Ick!
Now, for the important part – YOUR FLASH.
Wow – that was gorgeous. I cried. Of course.
How she’d feel to think he was dead and then find out not. Kind of like – well, WE felt watching the movie. And Bones.
“sweet on my Jim” – I think I can 100% vouch for the fact you have NEVER used that phrase before. I LOVE LOVE that! So sweet. I just melted when I read that.
I just – I’m just one big ol’ gooey mess of happy right now with this. SOOOOOOOO very worth the wait.
Yep, I could use as many of these as you can dish up!
Your pumpkin cheesecake ain’t got ‘nuthin’ on THIS!
I just gained 5 pounds reading this thing!
Thank you so so so much.
It’s practically courageous these days to start a fanfiction with a hymn.
I’m so extra pleased and happy and proud of you for every doggone word and sentiment on this page!

Well I didn’t experience any of that in school. But as a yougun I did go to church
And this is my favorite song for Thanksgiving time, much better than over the river and through the woods, blah blah π
Of course I do not personally sing it as no one wants to hear a frog sing but other frogs.
And despite some people thinking there would be no religion in Jim’s time I say hogwash and I think his old gran would be religious. So I am not the least bit embarrassed or brave for that matter to include a hymn. It is what it is and felt appropriate for this flash
And I love to write Jim having a gran. He deserves someone to love him.

Of course you didn’t since you’re much younger than I and O’Hair’s work had already taken effect. Plus – well, CA has gone a very different direction from TX for decades.

I would even add, not only will there still be religion in Jim’s time (I mean, BILLIONS of people on Earth right now consider themselves to be religious), if they’re going to meet new life and new civilizations AND follow the Prime Directive of non-interference (yeah yeah), they’re going to have to be tolerant of all those other civilizations’ religions too.
I mean, even Roddenberry, though not a believer, is the one who wrote “Bread and Circuses” and wrote for Uhura to say, “…the empire spokesman trying to ridicule their religion. But he couldn’t. Don’t you understand? It’s not the sun up in the sky. It’s the Son of God.”
And for Jim then to say, “Wouldn’t it be something to watch, to be a part of? To see it happen all over again?”
Sorry for those who demand no religion in the ST universe. Roddenberry himself made it canon.

there were many planets who worshipped a deity, so I agree 100%

Love the way this story began. I believe I sang that song in my high school chorus Christmas concert. But believe me I canβt sing. I believe I was accepted into the chorus because there mustβve been an equal opportunity push to include more people. Lol!!
This is such a cute story! Bring on the hogwash, call out the hogs! πππππ·ππ
Gran is such a loving soul. Iβm glad Jim has her in his life!
This is adorable! β¦ She waved her hand. βIβm old enough to have seen everything, young man. If youβre sweet on my Jim, thatβs good enough for me.β
