Chapter 3
They got a table at Giuseppeβs in the back of the restaurant, close to the kitchen, but Jim didnβt mind, because it had been where theyβd sat before, all those years ago, and he was pretty sure his mom had done it on purpose.
βItβs been years since Iβve been here,β she declared as she picked up the menu. βI even wondered it if it was still here. Everything changes so fast. Are you going to have a drink?β
Jim thought about it but shook his head. βI think Iβll stick to iced tea or something. But headβs still really fuzzy and Iβm so damn tired, I donβt think adding booze to the mix is a good idea.β
βHmm. What did the doctor say, anyway?β
βYou know.β Jim waved his hand vaguely.
She narrowed her eyes. βJames Tiberius, are you lying to your mother?β
βWell. Iβve just been busy. And anyway, you can see that I donβt have severe injuries.β
βExcept all those bruises around your neck.β
βJust a bit of soreness. What are you going to get?β
His mother sighed. βDo you know youβve been like this since you were a tiny boy? Never did want me to tend to your boo-boos. And when you came back from Tarβ¦that place, you didnβt want to deal with that either.β
βLots of people came away from there a lot worse than I did.β Jim paused. βOr not at all.β He didnβt add her own husband being one of them.
After Sam left, and Jim lost the car over the cliff, Frank had taken Jim to Tarsus IV. He had a sister that lived there with her family. Eventually Jimβs mom was to join them there. It was supposed to be a new start for them, or so theyβd all said. In the end, of the group of them, it had only been Jim and Frankβs sisterβs son, Kevin, who got out alive. The rest perished at the direction of Kodos.
Mom got quiet for a moment, her gaze sliding over the content of the menu. The waitress arrived and Jim ordered iced tea and his mom coffee.
βRemember when we came here last? Well.β She paused. βNot the very last time. That was right after you returned and even then you wouldnβt eat much.β
Jim nodded.
βThe time before that. It was you, me and Sam then.β
He smiled faintly. βYeah. We got the biggest pizza they had and a huge plate of spaghetti and meatballs.β
She laughed. βAnd garlic bread. Spumoni for dessert.β
βSam threw a meatball at me.β
βYeah.β Her gaze moved away, out to the rest of the restaurant. βThink heβs okay?β
βSam?β Jim shrugged. βMaybe. He always did seem to land on his feet. Heβs probably out there somewhere without ever a thought to us.β
βMmm.β She put down her menu. βI think Iβll have the fettucine alfredo. All that cream sauce is terrible for me, but why not indulge? My baby is alive, and surely, thatβs something to celebrate.β
He rolled his eyes at the baby. βIβm going for the spaghetti alla puttanesca.β
βLook at you, all fancy now. No more simple pizza for you.β
He laughed. βWell.β
After they ordered, his mom put her chin on her hand. βFirst time I came here was with your dad.β
βYeah?β
βAges ago, obviously. Back in our academy days, so we were babies then. And neither you nor Sam were even on our radar.β
βBet you were cute.β
βGeorge definitely was. When I first met him, he was seeing a classmate named Pamela Wenton. I hated her, of course.β
Jim laughed. βOf course.β
βWell, she had what I wanted. Or who.β
βI get it. I do. When I first met Spock he was dating Uhura.β
His mom snorted. βOh, goodness. She was never right for him. Heβs clearly interested in males.β
βSure, but I am too.β
βOnly males. I donβt know what that girl was thinking.β
βThat heβs insanely hot and extremely fascinating.β Jim grinned.
βYes, dear.β She patted his hand. βObviously, the moment he laid eyes on you, he was a lost cause.β
Jimβs smile slipped. βOr was. I justβ¦I really donβt know what to think.β
βI donβt know much, I suppose, Jim, but what I do know is that boy loves you. I can see it in his eyes. I recognize it because itβs just how I used to look at George. Heβll come around, honey. He will. Some things are just meant to be.β He tried to smile again, but it faltered a little, so he took a sip of tea, trying to ignore the burn in his throat as he swallowed.

Dude. That last line. Damn near killed me with its perfectness.
I love that they are talking and while not exactly addressing all the hard stuff, at least acknowledging it. Its wonderful to see them this way.
Jim needs it.
Adoring your take on the movie. God itβs so good!

thank you so much β€
I am definitely liking putting my own interpretation on things. As you may recall I didn't start writing their stories until after Into Darkness, so I didn't get to write too much fanfiction related to the 2009 movie, so it's definitely something I am liking doing.

I love that Winona and Jim have a good relationship in this story! Jim needs it. She makes a lot of sense: β I do know is that boy loves you. I can see it in his eyes. I recognize it because itβs just how I used to look at George. Heβll come around, honey. He will. Some things are just meant to be.β
