“Spring is in the air,” Jim declared, as he walked beside Bones on the way to breakfast. They’d left their dorm about ten minutes ago.

“Spring is it?”

“Spring and love.”

Bones snorted. “I may throw up.”

“Well, maybe not love. But babies. Lots of babies. That’s what spring is known for.”

“What the hell, Jim. You’re even more annoying than usual. What got you on the sunny side of the bed this morning?”

“Well…” Jim stopped at the restaurant where they intended to have breakfast. “Bones, remember when I said I had the absolute best date last night?”

“Uh-Huh. You were kind of sappy and doey-eyed.”

Jim shoved his shoulder. “Shut up. The point is, everything went so incredibly perfect.”

“Yeah, yeah, you got laid.”

He laughed. “I did, yeah. And it was spectacular.”

“Jim—”

“My date from last night is meeting us here.”

“Oh swell.”

“I wouldn’t have even come home except you and I had already planned breakfast together and well, he didn’t exactly want to let me go, entirely, so I…”

Bones frowned. “This better not be Gary Mitchell.”

“Uh. Nope.” Jim pushed open the door of the restaurant. He could see that his date was already there waiting at a table. And he stood when Jim and Bones entered. Jim grinned.

Bones followed his gaze. “Oh crap. Professor Spock?”

Spock had only eyes for Jim, Jim could see that and he didn’t mind. Not one bit. He met Spock’s outstretched hand, touching his fingers to Spock’s.

“Like I said, Bones…”

“Spring and love is in the air,” Bones said, sarcastically. “At least there won’t be any babies!”

Flash Fic, 02/19/2020

Spock met Jim at a restaurant across town not that far from the department store where Jim worked. There was still so little he knew about the younger man. The truth was Spock found his extraordinary masculine beauty quite intimidating. He had never known someone as attractive as Jim. And Spock had grown up feeling somewhat awkward, anyway, considering he was not fully accepted by either Humans or Vulcans. This had bothered him in a way it did not seem to bother Vanik.

But in any event, because he was still quite shy with Jim, Spock had failed to learn much information about Kirk.

Jim already waited at a table when Spock arrived, though he stood up as Spock approached.

“Hi Spock. You’re a little late. Thought maybe I’d been stood up.” He smiled though and retook is seat as Spock sat himself down.

It was not like Spock to be late and he said so, “I do apologize for my tardiness. It is uncommon.”

Spock would not explain that he had taken extra time to assure his appearance would be appealing.

“It’s okay,” Jim assured him. “Just glad you’re here. I’m always half expecting that you won’t show.”

Spock frowned slightly. “Why would you expect that?”

Jim smiled somewhat wistfully. “Well. It’s pretty clear that Vanik wanted us to get together. He pushed you into this with machinations. Would you have asked me out if he hadn’t orchestrated things?”

He believed in honesty. “No.”

That wistful smile deepened. “So you see.”

“While it is true I would not have asked you, it is not because I was not interested in you.”

“No?”

Spock could not meet Jim’s gaze. “Quite the opposite. I find you most compelling.”

“Then…why?”

His gaze rose and met those startling blue eyes. “I…do not do well in personal interactions.”

Jim smiled. It was not at all mocking or even amused. It was…gentle. “You mean you’re shy?”

“Yes.” He felt his ears warm. “Yes.”

“You have nothing at all to worry about, Spock,” Jim said then. “I find you compelling too.”

Flash Fic Friday 01/03/2020

For January, we are back to Flash Fic Fridays. In February I will add back in Wednesday Flashes.

Spock should not have been surprised to look down and see Vanik standing beside him as he checked himself in the mirror in the bathroom of his apartment. It was becoming all too common to find the boy nearby. He was fond of his nephew, but he would not be all that unhappy when Sybok and Anoria took their leave of Earth with their precocious son in tow.

And yet…he was surprised. Illogically.

“What are you doing here?” he demanded.

“I have come to learn what progress you are making with Jim.”

Spock eyed him balefully. “That is not your business.”

“I believe that it is. Since I am the one who first introduced you to Jim…”

“We became acquainted with Mister Kirk on the same day.”

“And I arranged for your first date.”

“It was an outing, not a date. And you tricked us.”

Vanik shrugged. “You were getting nowhere on your own. Which is why I am inquiring as to whether you require my assistance again. You have now been on no less than four dates with Jim, not counting the sleigh ride.”

“We rode in a carriage, not a sleigh,” Spock pointed out. “An expensive one at that. It was false advertising.”

“There would be no place in San Francisco to pull a one horse open sleigh so improvisation was required,” Vanik said simply. “Jim did not seem to mind.”

“As he is your elder and you are barely acquainted, you, perhaps, should refer to him as Mister Kirk.”

“On the contrary, he told me when we met his name was Jim. He has not rescinded the personal use of his name.” Vanik paused. “To either of us. Are you scheduled to have a date with him this evening?”

Spock sighed. “Yes. I am preparing for it now.”

“That is good news. Have you had opportunities to exchange implications of favorable softer emotions?”

Spock blinked, feeling somewhat dizzy with such a convoluted sentence.  “I am quite sure that is not your business. Nor is any of the specific details of my interactions with Jim.”

Vanik frowned. “But you do…like him?”

He hesitated only a moment. “Yes.”

“And he likes you?”

It was on the tip of Spock’s tongue to advise the boy to direct that question to Jim, but then he realized Vanik would, and Jim certainly didn’t need to have the boy pestering him with personal inquiries.

“Yes,” Spock replied instead.

He was saved from further invasive inquiry by the blurp of Vanik’s communication device. The boy flipped it open and Spock heard Anoria’s voice.

“Vanik! You ran off again. Get back here right this instant.”

“I am with Uncle…”

“I know where you are. Stop bothering Spock. Come back to the hotel immediately.”

“I will be there soon.” Vanik closed his device and nodded at Spock. “I must go. I hope you have a most productive date with Jim.”

Spock did not reply as his nephew scampered off. Instead he looked at his colognes that had been gifts from his brother and sister-in-law just this past holiday season. He chose one and splashed it on himself.

Then he turned away from the mirror to prepare to retrieve Jim for their date.

New Years Eve

And so we come to the last flash for December. Oh what fun it has been. We rejoin the Spock and Jim from the Prime in the Library and Rudolph flashes.

“I’ve been thinking.”

“God help us.”

Jim frowned at his best friend, Bones. “I’m serious.”

“I know. And whenever you say I’ve been thinking and I’m serious, I say God help us. Because we’re going to need it, Jim. I don’t know what you’ve got in that pretty little head of yours, but I’m worried.”

“You exaggerate. I was just going to suggest we go to that new club down the street from the Academy for New Year’s Eve.”

Bones sputtered. “Sure. Just how I want to spend the night. In an overcrowded smelly club with people pawing each other.” He paused. “What time?”
“What time for what?” Spock asked, suddenly appearing at their table. He touched his fingers to Jim’s who smiled at him.

“Genius here wants to go to that new club for New Year’s Eve.”

“You should go, Doctor,” Spock said smoothly.

“I…should?”

“Indeed. However, unfortunately, Jim cannot join you.”

Jim looked at him. “I can’t?”

“That is our rescheduled dinner with my parents. From when you were previously ill.”

“Oh. Damn. Right. Sorry.” He grinned sheepishly at Bones. “Never mind, Bones. I’m having dinner with Spock’s folks.”

“It was probably a bad idea anyway,” Bones said. “I should go. I have a test I need to study for.”

After Bones left, Spock stroked his finger along the knuckles of Jim’s hand.

“Are you sorry you cannot go to the club that night?”

“No. I mean we can go any time. Bones is right, probably too crowded for New Year’s Eve, anyway.”

Spock continued to soothingly brush his knuckles. He had a way of calming Jim that he really appreciated.  “Did you really forget the dinner or were you attempting to get out of it?”

Jim coughed. “What? Of-of course not.”

“Jim.”

“I did forget, but maybe because I’m kind of sort of blocking it out.”

“May I ask why?”

He sighed. Maybe dramatically. “You won’t understand.”

“Perhaps not,” Spock agreed. “But I would like to. It is my belief that you and I have become quite close and are in a mutually beneficial monogamous long term relationship. Am I incorrect?”

A strange warmth filled Jim, which was crazy. Because it seemed such a longwinded way of saying, aren’t we a couple? And yet he liked the words. A lot.

“No, you aren’t wrong. We absolutely are.”

“Then, will you explain your reluctance?”

Jim spun his coffee cup around, keeping his eyes on the cup rather than Spock. “You know. You…you’re my first.”

“You were not inexperienced before our first sexual encounter.”

The confusion in Spock’s voice had him looking up.

“No. Not that.” He hadn’t lied to Spock, he’d been quite upfront that he’d had quite a bit of sexual experience prior to them meeting. “Relationship. You’re my first serious relationship.”

“And I hope to be your only one.”

Jim swallowed, his face feeling warm. “Yeah. And see, that’s it. Exactly.” He looked away again, back to his coffee mug.

“I do not understand.”

“Spock…I love you. I’ve never felt this way about anyone. But I’ve never met anyone’s parents either. And, well, your dad has something of a reputation, and what if they hate me?”

Spock didn’t respond. He just remained completely quiet. For so long, that Jim’s gaze rose once more to look at him, and was greeted with wide brown eyes.

“You…you okay?”

“I love you as well,” Spock whispered.

“Yeah?”

“You have not yet said these words until now.”

Jim was surprised when Spock seized his hand in his. “I know. I…like I said, this is all new to me.”

“And to me. My depth of feeling has never reached this level with another. My parents will like you, Jim, simply because you are my chosen one.”

Jim smiled a little. His stomach was full of fluttering butterflies. “Chosen one, huh?”

“Indeed. So, will you spend the beginning of the New Year with me meeting my parents?”

Jim laughed. And stroked his fingers along Spock’s. “Yes. Of course I will. And for the record, I want the same. With you.”

Spock’s eyes now sparkled. “Then it should, indeed, by a Happy New Year.”

Santa Claus is Coming to Town

“Daddy, is that an elf?”

Jim Kirk looked to where his four-year-old son, David, pointed. They had just entered the department store in San Francisco. David had been asking to see Santa Claus.

At the moment, Jim had the care for his son as the boy’s mother and Jim’s ex, Carol Marcus, was off planet on a science expedition. Jim had readily agreed since it meant having David with him for the holidays. And now that he was on winter break from Starfleet Academy he no longer had to rely on his friends and fellow cadets to babysit.

Jim’s gaze widened as he grabbed David’s arm to keep him from rushing at the “elf”. “Er, No. That’s a…that man’s a Vulcan.”

And Jim’s current crush, Commander Spock, who had programmed the Kobayashi Maru Jim had taken and failed.

“Oh. Okay,” David replied. He looked up at Jim. “Does he know Santa?”

“Well…” Jim was about to say he doubted it, but in fact Spock was standing next to and speaking with Uhura, who was wearing a red and white Santa’s helper uniform, and Santa. Or whoever wore the Santa costume for the store. “Yeah, I guess maybe he does.”

“Take me to him,” David pleaded. “I want to ask him for what I want this year.”

He blew out a breath. He sure hoped David wasn’t going to come up with something like “my parents back together’ or anything similar. He’d met Carol back in Riverside when she’d been there on a temporary assignment for Starfleet and before he had enlisted himself. Their relationship had been brief and wrought with more drama than either of them had wanted to deal with. They made far better friends and co-parents than lovers.

But kids sometimes just couldn’t understand adult issues and wanted for things that couldn’t be theirs.

Nevertheless, his responsibility as “daddy” was to make sure David got his chance. So, Jim took his son’s hand and walked over to where they stood talking. He didn’t fail to notice the sign in front of Santa’s House that declared “Santa’s On a Break.”

Jim knew he’d probably get the brush off from Uhura and Spock, but maybe Santa would be nicer. He had to at least try.

As they approached he heard the lyrics of the song playing overhead.

He’s making a list, He’s checking it twice, Gonna find out who’s naughty and nice

“Santa Claus is coming to town,” he sang softly. He smiled down at David, who grinned back. He turned to the three standing there. “Excuse me, but…”

Uhura looked at him. “Kirk, can’t you see we’re…”

“Yes, but my son…”

Her gaze went to David and brightened instantly. “You have a son?”

“Yes. This is David. David, this is Ms. Uhura.” He glanced at Spock, feeling his face heat. He cleared his throat. “And this is Spock.”

“Spock?” David repeated, scrunching up his face. “Isn’t that the one you like, Daddy?”

Jim laughed, wanting to crawl away as Spock raised a brow. “Uh, ha ha. Kids. They say the darndest things. Listen. I don’t want to take up your time, I just wanted to know when Santa was…Bones?” He stared at Santa.

Bones narrowed his eyes. “That’s Santa Claus to you, son.”

David frowned. “I don’t see Uncle Bones. Where is he?”

Uhura kicked Jim. “He’s not here. Your Daddy was mistaken.”

Jim’s jaw tightened. “Hang on one second, David. Daddy wants to have a word with Santa Claus.” He glanced at Uhura. “Can you watch him for a second?”

“Sure. Hey, David, do you want a candy cane?”

Jim grabbed Santa’s arm and pulled him out of earshot. “What the hell? Why didn’t you tell me you were going to be Santa at the store?”

“Because you would have made fun of me for it.”

“No, I wouldn’t…okay, yeah, I would. But still.”

“Listen, I just wanted some side income to send some stuff to my own kid. Plus have something to get David a gift. It’s no big deal. Just a few hours a week.”

Jim nodded. “Okay. Well, when you talk to David try to talk him into something easy, will you?”

“You want me to lead your son?”

“Well, you know. To like toys and stuff. Nothing like universal peace or mommy and daddy together again.” Jim grimaced.

“All right, all right. And what was that about Spock?”

Nothing.”

He pushed Bones back to the others and saw that David not only had a candy cane but several foil wrapped chocolate balls.

Swell, he thought. A hyped up David would be just what he needed.

“Uh. Thanks. Anyway I was wondering when Santa’s break would be over as my son wants to give him his wish list.”

“Santa” looked down at Jim’s son. “Have you been nice, David?”

David nodded. “’Course. Daddy says it always pays to be nice.”

Jim smiled.

“Well. I think you can tell him what you want right now, David. Santa can delay his break for you,” Uhura spoke up.

“That’s right.” “Santa” crouched down next to David and put his arm around him. “What do you want for Christmas, David? A toy space ship? A telescope? A little mini science lab?”

“Nope. None of that.”

“Er. Um, then, books? Coloring books or…”

“Perhaps it would be wise, Santa, to allow David to make the request himself,” Spock said.

“No, Santa,” David said, voice small. “Daddy can get me all that. Or Mommy.”

“Santa” glanced up at Jim, who shifted awkwardly. “All right. What do you want?”

David glanced over at Spock and then back to Santa. “Daddy needs a boyfriend.”

“David—”

“He’s super lonely and all he does is study and spend time with me. And Santa, I know he really really likes Spock.”

“How do you know that?”

“He told me!”

Jim saw Uhura smother a laugh and he glared daggers at her. “All right, David. I’m pretty sure we’ve taken up too much of Santa’s break as it is. We should go.”

“But Santa hasn’t said…”

“Well, now, David,” “Santa” interrupted. “It’s very difficult to give gifts of people, you know.”

“Sure. But I’m sure if Mr. Spock got to know Daddy he’d really like him.”

Jim coughed. “Lunch. Come on, kiddo. We’ll go to your favorite place. Say by to Santa now.”

David pouted a little. “Okay.”

And to Jim’s further embarrassment, David walked over to where Spock stood, looking unfailingly serene.

“I know Santa can work magic!” David said to Spock. “See you later.” He waved frantically at Spock and then ran to where Jim waited. He smiled so brightly at Jim, he didn’t have the heart to be upset with the boy.

“Did you have fun?” Jim asked, as he steered his son away from the gawking group.

“Yeah! And I got candy.”

Jim laughed. “I know. But before you eat too much of that, let’s get some real food.”

****

“Daddy, he’s here, he’s here!”

Jim frowned at his terminal screen, paused it, and looked over at his son who was standing nearby jumping up and down.

“Who?”

“Spock.”

Jim blinked. “What?”

“At the door! He’s here.”

He got up from is chair and came around the desk. “David, I’ve told you before not to answer the door. Come and get me.”

He hadn’t even heard someone at the door.

“Okay,” David said. “But he’s here, he’s here.”

Jim couldn’t imagine what Spock was doing there. He’d never been there before and Jim didn’t even know Spock knew where he lived.

He went over to the apartment door and peered out the peephole, but he couldn’t see much.

“It’s what I asked Santa for!”

“David, shhh. It’s got nothing to do with Santa.”

He gestured for David to get back and then he opened the door.

Sure enough Spock stood there, dressed in his all black uniform, looking austere and intimidating.

Jim tried a smile. “Hi.”

“Good evening. May I have a word?”

He cleared his throat. “Sure. One second.” He turned back to David. “Wait inside, okay? I’ll be back in a minute.”

“Okay, Daddy.”

Jim smiled and then stepped onto the landing outside his apartment. It was a beautiful day, really. His second-floor apartment faced out onto the garden area of the apartment complex. He preferred that then looking out over the pool or the street.

“So, um, what can I do for you?” he asked Spock.

Spock’s gaze flicked briefly to the closed door. “Your son is quite appealing.”

“Thank you.”

Spock nodded. “His…mother…”

“She’s off planet. Carol Marcus. She’s a scientist. She’s not…” Jim licked his lips. “We’re not together.” He cleared his throat. “Anymore.”

“I see.” Spock straightened. “I was wondering if I may…that is, if you might be free to have dinner with me at some point.”

Yes!

Jim blushed, glancing quickly at the closed door. Clearly he needed to have a conversation with his son about listening in on adult conversations.

Spock quirked a brow but otherwise did not react to David’s yell.

Jim took a step further away from the door. “Listen, um, what David said at the store.”

“Children say all kinds of things,” Spock said quietly. “I am aware that you did not wish him to speak up, however I did hope there was some truth to what he said.”

Jim blinked. “Yeah?”

Way to go, Jim, he thought. You sound so brilliant.

“Leonard McCoy did advise me that David’s words were truthful but if—”

“Bones did?”

Spock fell silent but nodded. His cheeks were just the tiniest bit green.

Jim laughed. “Well, then. I guess I shouldn’t bother to deny it.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means, Professor, that I’d love to have dinner with you at any point.”

“I see. Then I am gratified.”

“I do need to arrange for a babysitter, though. How does tomorrow night grab you?”

Spock inclined his head. “It grabs me well.”

Jim grinned. “Fantastic. See you then? Did you want to meet somewhere or—?”

“I will come for you at seven tomorrow night.”

“Okay. Cool.”

Spock nodded again and then turned and walked over to the stairs that would take him to the ground level. Jim watched him the entire way until he was out of sight.

He exhaled deeply. “He’s making a list, checking it twice. Gonna find out who’s naughty or nice.” He shook his head. “Guess I’ve been nice.”

He turned back and opened his apartment door to face the eagers brightness in David’s face.

“Guess you were right, kiddo. It did have something to do with Santa.”

“Yay!” He laughed, dropped to his knees and hugged his son.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

I kind of like to imagine this is the same Jim from the seeing Prime in the library. He seems the same to me.

“Your nose is as red as Snow White’s Apple,” Leonard “Bones” McCoy cracked to Jim Kirk as they strode through the middle quad path at Starfleet Academy.

“Funny. I’ve been sneezing all day and my nose is starting to run. Think I caught a cold from…hey!” Jim squealed and covered his neck with his hand. “What you just stab me with?”

“Medication, you baby. Actually considering the time of year, your nose is as red as Rudolph’s.”

“You know that reminds me, don’t you think Santa was a dick to Rudolph?”

“Well. Sure. That was kinda the point, wasn’t it? To show that even a good guy like Santa can get it wrong.”

Jim stumbled and then stopped, putting his hand on his forehead. “I think I’m getting a fever.”

“I think I have something for that.” Bones dug into his medical bag.

“Easy.” Jim dodged him. “I’m still recovering from that bee sting you gave me only seconds ago.”

“Do you wanna get better or not? Haven’t you got a big date with the hob—”

“Jim. Doctor.”

“Speak of the devil,” Bones muttered.

Spock arched his brow at Bones but otherwise ignored him in favor of gazing at Jim intently. “You do not look well.”

“It’s the bright red nose.”

Jim shot Bones an irritated look. “Be quiet. I’m sure Spock can see for himself.”

“Pretty sure the whole campus can spot that shiny beacon,” Bones cracked. “It’s glowing. You sure you don’t want another shot?”

“You received a medical procedure from the doctor?”

“Involuntary, but yeah. That’s quite all right, Bones, I’ll pass. Be on your way.”

“Let me know if that fever gets worse!” Bones called as he hurried away.

Spock’s intense look became concerned. “You have a fever?”

“Just a small one.” Jim sighed. “But, um, I don’t think I should go to the dinner with your parents. I don’t want to infect anyone. I might be contagious. I’m sorry.”

“It is I who feel regret, Jim. I will cancel.”

“No, you don’t have to…”

“My parents are in San Francisco for an extended period. We can schedule the dinner for another time when you are feeling better. I would prefer to watch over your illness.”

Jim smiled. He did, even though, he really felt pretty damn miserable. But how could he when he had this amazing Vulcan standing nearby, ready to take care of him?

And though Jim hadn’t quite got to the point where he told Spock he loved him or anything, Jim was certain he did.

“Okay.” He took a step forward and stumbled again, but Spock seized hold of him instantly. “Guess I feel pretty crappy.”

“Indeed. Come, Jim. It’s time for me to put you to bed.”

“Wish we were going to bed for something fun.”

“Jim…”

“I know. And this nose. It’s not very comfwutable.”

Spock shook his head and helped Jim out of the quad to get him to bed.

Flash Fic, October 31, 2019

Coming full circle.

On October 31, 2014 I began the fic that would be known as Professor Spock. The first words I wrote were…And it started on Halloween. Two other fics later, they finally got married and fully bonded last October.

So I thought it fitting that I end October’s Flashes with yet another peek into their lifes

“Are you going to the party tonight?”

Jim looked up from the title of the message he’d received to stare at his best friend, Leonard “Bones” McCoy. “Party?” he asked, absently.

“The Halloween party. Being held at the cafeteria and hosted by Rand and Uhura. I know you said you didn’t have a costume but…”

“Not now, Bones.” He thrust his PADD at Bones, who scanned the message title.

“What are you going to do?”

“I’ll have to tell him. I just…I thought there’d be more time.”

Jim took the PADD and read the title of the message one more time.

Congratulations on your assignment to the Farragut

Jim opened the message to read it.

James Tiberius Kirk you will report to Captain Garrovick with the rank of Lieutenant as a Weapon’s Specialist. Report on…

Jim stopped reading it.

He should be excited. He knew he should. But Spock…

“I thought for sure they’d assign me to the Enterprise. Spock is my husband and we filed all the papers and I posted for the Enterprise.”

“Hello Leonard. Jim.” It was Pike, who was suddenly standing next to their table in the cafeteria that would later be decorated for the Halloween party. “Can you excuse us for a bit, Leonard?”

“Yeah. Sure.” Bones looked at him uncertainly, but got up and walked away.

Pike sat in his place, looking serious but not unkind. “Then you got the memo?”

“Yeah. I don’t understand.” He clenched his fists. “I thought I’d be on the Enterprise with Spock, serving under you.”

“And that was my recommendation. But the admiralty thought the separation and differing assignments would be beneficial to both of you, this early in your career.”

“That’s bullshit. Spock and I are married and bonded. We’re supposed to be together.”

“Spock advised them that separate assignments would not be detrimental to your bond.”

He what?”

Pike sighed. “They asked him straight out and Spock wouldn’t lie. Look, Jim, I know you’re disappointed but Garrovick—”

Disappointed?” Jim asked, incredulous. “That doesn’t even begin to describe it. This is exactly why I didn’t want to join Starfleet in the first place. They do nothing but jerk you around. This is complete shit and you know it. I fucking resign.”

“Jim…”

“No. Seriously. Fuck you. Fuck them. I’m done.”

Jim got up from the table and fled the cafeteria, running blindly from the campus.

This was his anniversary, damn it. He was supposed to have a wonderful night with his husband. Maybe they’d show up at the party and maybe they wouldn’t. But this? It was too much.

Tears stung his eyes and as Jim stood there trying to decide which way to go, he stepped off the curb just as a hover bike changed lanes and ran right into him.

****

“Unnh.”

“We must stop meeting this way.”

“Bones?” he asked groggily.

“I am not Bones.”

Jim’s eyes flew open and he had a huge amount of de ja vu. “Professor Spock?”

Spock’s eyes crinkled just a bit. “Yes.”

“What are you doing here?”

“You have been injured and are in the medical ward of Starfleet. You have a broken leg. You have a concussion and a cracked rib. You are fortunate it was not worse.”

“All right. Thanks. You can go now.”

“Jim.”

He smiled a little. “Sorry. I thought we were replaying the day we met. Or the…after. You know.”

Spock leaned down and kissed him. “I know.”

“Happy Anniversary. Sucks.”

“You do have a dramatic way of protesting your assignment.”

Jim winced and looked away from his husband’s piercing gaze.

He felt the bed shake a bit as Spock sat down.

“Ashaya, I have news.”

Jim sighed and bit his lip. “I’m sorry I ran in front of a hover bike.”

“It was on purpose?”

“No. Still sorry though.”

“You are an exceedingly emotional being. This I have learned frequently since we became acquainted. Always running.”

“Yeah.”

“There is no need, Jim.”

“But they are separating us.”

“Not any longer.”

“Break it up, break it up, you two love birds.”

Bones came in. At least Jim thought it was Bones. Pirate Bones. With a parrot on his shoulder.

“I thought you had a party, doctor.”

“I do. And I’m on my way. Obviously. Just wanted to check on stupid here first. You’re doing fine, Jim. But you will have to stay here for a few days. I’m thinking four at least.” He thrust a drink container at Jim. “Pumpkin latte. Happy Halloween.”

Jim smiled. “Thanks.”

“And anniversary, I guess. Hard to believe just a year ago, Spock was wearing fangs. Unlike last time you got creamed by a hover bike and Spock begged to stay with you—”

“I did not beg. I merely pointed out that it was appropriate given we were bonded by the laws of—”

“Blah blah blah. Spock can stay with you tonight, no problem. As it’s all official and everything. I think I can go to the party leaving you in his capable hands.”

“Of course.” Spock was bristling.

“I’ll be by early in the morning to check on you.” Bones stopped at the door. Jim wished he could see if he had a peg leg. “Did you tell him?”

The question was directed at Spock.

“I was about to when you interrupted.”

Jim barely refrained from wincing at the censure in Spock’s voice. Bones merely rolled his eyes and left the hospital room.

Jim gazed at his husband nervously. “Tell me what?”

Because he was waiting for the other shoe to fall. Of course he was.

“The Farragut is departing in two days,” Spock said softly.

Jim frowned. “But Bones said I had to stay here for four.”

Spock nodded. He reached for and held Jim’s hand. “Your assignment has changed.”

“What? What does that mean?”

“You will not be on the Farragut.”

Forgetting for a moment he had told Pike he resigned, Jim’s frown deepened. “Where will I be assigned?”

Spock paused a beat. “The Enterprise.”

His heart leaping into his throat, Jim gripped Spock’s hand tightly. “What? But I thought…”

“Ambassador Sarek spoke to the Admiralty about our bond. Though it is true that most ordinary Vulcan bonds do not prevent a separating assignment, little is known about our T’hy’la bond, as it is so rare. He recommended against splitting us.”

Jim’s jaw dropped open. “He did?”

“Indeed. And they agreed. Which you would have found out prior to your hospitalization had you not had an emotional outburst and ran away, yet again, as Father was already working on the solution.”

Jim smiled. “I sense a reprimand in there.”

“Oh it was an obvious reprimand, Jim. Perhaps next time you will wait to speak with me.”

“There won’t be a next time.” Jim’s smile slipped. “We do seem to repeat the same behaviors, circumstances. Whatever.”

“Mm.” Spock leaned over to kiss him. “Happy Anniversary. This was not exactly what I had planned.”

“What did you have planned? The Halloween party?”

Spock drew back and gave him a look. “Hardly. A romantic dinner for two, champagne for you, chocolates for me, naked wrestling in bed…”

Jim sighed. “That does sound…wait. What?”

Spock’s lips twitched. “Or you know, making love.”

“Damn it. I had to go and get hit by that stupid hover bike. Again.”

“It was not the same one.”

“You know what I mean.”

Spock released his hand and rose from the bed, confusing Jim.

“Wait. Where are you going?”

“To fetch your dinner. We will have what passes for a romantic anniversary dinner here in your hospital room. Without the champagne and chocolate truffles, of course. And no vampire costume this year.”

“Awe. Okay. Everything else…sounds amazing. I love you, Spock.”

“And you own my heart, body and soul.”

And yes…it started on Halloween.

“Do you believe in ghosts and the like?”

“Oh, for God’s sake, Jim. I’m trying to study for a big exam here.”

Jim nudged Bones’ leg as he sat before his terminal in their combined dorm. Bones didn’t just have a cup of black coffee next to him, but a carafe.

Hand on one hip, Jim smirked. “I’m serious.”

“You think asking me if I believe in spooks is serious?”

“Uh-huh. I think I saw one.”

“How much did you have to drink?”

“Nothing! It was at the library. I was sitting at the table in the back by the philosophy section. All by myself.”

Bones snorted. “And you’re surprised? It was philosophy. Boring.”

“I know.” Jim rolled his eyes. “You’re a doctor not a philosopher.”

“Yep. Go away. You’re bugging me.”

“Anyway, as I was sitting there, he appeared…”

“Of course it was a guy.”

“Dark hair, pale skin, all dressed in black, and like a hooded cape on.”

“And that makes him a spook?”

“No. But I looked down at my PADD for like a second when I got a message from Sam and when I looked up the hooded figure was gone.”

“Hooded figure? You watch too many movies. He just went to another part of the library, Jim.”

“I would have thought so but I looked around everywhere and he was nowhere to be found.” Jim sat on the edge of Bone’s desk. “I think he was a ghost.”

“Sure, sure.” Bones leaned back in his chair. “Did you tell the professor?”

“No,” Jim said quickly. “He’d think I was crazy and illogical to boot.”

“Gotta agree with him there. I’m actually surprised you aren’t with him. Or he’s not with you. I thought you two had been sewn together or something.”

“Don’t be stupid. I asked if he wanted to be and he said no.”

Bones rolled his eyes. “Didn’t I tell you to get lost?”

“Yeah, yeah. He’s having dinner with his folks.”

“Didn’t invite you?”

“Not this time. It’s still pretty new, you know? And I think he’s waiting to see if he can stand me that long.”

“Oh he can stand you. I know from all the times I’ve seen his tongue in your mouth.”

Jim laughed and shoved him. “I’m going back to the library.”

“In search of ghosts?”

“Nah, philosophy. I still want to find a book I’m looking for. Haven’t found it yet, though it’s supposed to be there and no one has checked it out.”

“Woooowooo, spooky,” Bones said, sarcastically.

“Oh be quiet. See you later. And ease up on the caffeine dude. You’re shaking.”

Jim headed back down the campus to the library. It was a quiet night without many people around. There was a slight crisp in the air, the kind that would make his boyfriend pull on a sweater but Jim didn’t mind it.

It was a Friday night, so he knew hardly anyone would be around and though he’d mentioned his “ghost” to Bones, Jim hadn’t really believed it.

He went right up to the Philosophy section to look for his book. He’d been looking for about ten minutes when he decided to go to the table he’d sat at before and leave his book bag there. He turned the corner of the aisle and saw…

The hooded man. He was leaning over the table, placing something there.

“Hey!”

The man turned toward him and his hood fell slightly revealing pointed ears.

Jim frowned, heart thundering. “Spock? Is that…”

But no, the Vulcan looked older and…

He disappeared in front of Jim’s eyes.

“What the…”

Jim shook his head rapidly. No way. He went over to the table and looked down at what the figure had placed on his table.

It was the book he’d been looking for. He put his hand on it. Real.

His communicator beeped and Jim jumped. He fished it out of his pocket, looked at who it was, and flipped it open.

“Hi. You through? Yeah. Me too. I’m leaving the library. Meet you at your apartment. Bye.”

He closed it. Put it away and stuffed the book into his bag.

“Thanks,”  he muttered and left the library.

Our Hooded Figure

Flash Fic Friday, August 30, 2019

Jim Kirk was late to a young woman he’d been set up to meet. It wasn’t something he had been looking forward to, honestly, but the woman was the daughter of a friend of his mother’s and Jim’s mom had been pestering him in messages to get it over with.

“If you don’t like her, you won’t have to see her again.”

Yeah, sure. Jim sighed.

So he was dashing down the corridor in the science building, using it as a shortcut actually, to get across campus faster and to the coffee place where Denise was supposed to be waiting.

Commander Marius was coming out of an office to the side. She stopped when she spotted Jim.

“Cadet Kirk.”

“Commander.” He knew it would be rude not to stop.

“Have you seen Commander Spock?”

Jim wished. He had a big time crush on the Vulcan. Unrequited, unfortunately.

“No, ma’am.”

She sighed. “If you happen to, tell him Pike wants to see him. I can’t find him anywhere.”

“Will do.” He watched her continue down the hall and out of the science building. It was the middle of the day, so Jim assumed no one thought Spock would have simply gone home, but it was Jim’s experience, you just never knew. With a shrug, he continued on.

“Mister Kirk.”

Jim stopped, turned around, and looked. He saw no one. He made to keep walking.

“Jimmy!”

What the hell? No one called him that except his mother and Bones when he was trying to be funny. Oh, and that asshole, Finnegan. Suddenly an arm shot out, grabbed him and pulled him through an open door.

“Hey! What—”

Holding on to him was Commander Spock, dressed, rather sloppily, in his black instructor uniform.

“Is she gone?”

Jim stared at him, dumbfounded, trying to wrap his brain around the fact Spock had just called him ‘Jimmy’. “Who?”

“Marius.”

“Oh. Yeah. She went back that way. Did you want me to—?”

No. I cannot see her right now. Or Captain Pike.”

Jim angled his head. “Are you all right?”

“Negative. I received a gift today and…has anyone ever advised you that your eyes are the most amazing color? Like the ocean. I could stare into them for hours.”

“Uh. Well. As-as flattering as that is, um, what?”

Spock clutched him, drawing him over to Spock’s desk. “A gift. I received this.” He pointed.

“An empty box?”

“Yes. No.” Spock drew Jim closer and put his arm around Jim. Jim’s heart was actually thundering hard in his chest. “There are so many different shades of blue in your irises.”

Jim licked his lips. “Um. The box?”

“It was chocolate,” Spock blurted out loudly. Then dropped his voice to a whisper. “A box of chocolates. Sent by my mother. I was not to indulge in them at school, however, I-I found myself tempted.”

“Your mom sent you chocolates?”

“For my birthday. Yes. They are tradition between us because I am almost as fond of them as I am of you, but I wasn’t to eat them here. But I had one and before I knew it, I had…eaten them all.”

Jim blew out a breath. Spock blew back at him. It wasn’t funny. Okay it was. And Jim couldn’t help it. He laughed. “You’re drunk, huh?”

“It is not exactly drinking. It is…under the influence. But not drunk. Not the way you get drunk, certainly, ashayam.”

Jim laughed again. “I swear you are cuter than anyone I’ve ever met in my life.”

“The feeling is quite mutual, I assure you.” Spock blew on Jim’s face again. “I need you to see that I make it safely to my apartment without incident or dire circumstances, Cadet Ashayam.”

Shoot. He was supposed to be meeting Dianne or Denise, honestly, he’d forgotten which it was. But taking care of Spock before he became irreparably embarrassed was surely more important. He supposed he could contact one of Spock’s friends, but, well, Jim was already here, wasn’t he?”

“Okay, yeah. I think it’s definitely best to get you home. You can deal with Pike tomorrow.”

Spock was now staring at him, looking straight into Jim’s eyes. “I very much desire to kiss you.”

“Well. Again. I’m flattered. Really. But right now you aren’t thinking like yourself.”

“You do not want to kiss me?”

“Beyond belief,” Jim admitted. “But you’re under the influence and saying stuff you don’t mean, and I’m going to make sure you get home. Okay?”

“Very well, Cadet Ashayam.”

Jim walked with him to the door of the office. He wondered where Spock was hiding when Marius came to look for him, but decided not to ask, he’d let Spock have his secrets. He peered out.

“Looks like the coast is clear,” he announced.

“Then the clouds that came in earlier have dissipated?” Spock asked.

Jim choked. “Yeah. Yeah, honey. Come on.”

“Wait.” Spock clutched his collar.

“What?”

“You called me honey. Did that not warrant we engage in kissing?”

“No. Come on. And stop distracting me with your cuteness.” Jim got Spock into the corridor and then moved with him quickly down the hallway to the exit door. He pushed the door open and hurried them outside.

Spock tilted his head up to look up at the sky. “You are wrong, Jimmy. The clouds are still here.”

He chuckled. “So, they are. Let’s go, Commander.”

He knew where Spock lived. Not because he’d been stalking him or anything. But well…there’d been a time or two when he’d considered just knocking on Spock’s apartment door and saying, “Hey, do you wanna?” More eloquently, of course.

So he managed to get the Vulcan professor down the street and to his apartment building without much trouble. Spock almost fell into an open manhole once but Jim pulled him back.

“You saved me,” Spock said, staring in awe at Jim.

“Well. Um. You know.” Jim knew he was blushing. Stupid fair skin. He hustled Spock away from that scene and to the building. Spock lived on the fourth floor, so Jim got them into the lift and up to that floor. “Door fob?”

Spock held out his hand but when Jim went to take it, Spock closed his hand over Jim’s. He wrapped his index and middle fingers around Jim’s. “We are now kissing.”

Jim’s jaw dropped. “What?”

“A Vulcan kiss,” Spock said somewhat breathlessly.

Jim laughed and rolled his eyes. “Come on. Behave. You are so going to hate yourself in the morning.” He snatched the fob and opened the door, pulling Spock through and into the apartment. The lights came on with the movement.

He brought Spock over to the sofa.

“Sit down. I’ll make you some tea and then you’re going to sleep it off. How long does this usually last anyway?”

“Only a few hours.”

“Good. I just need to send a message to someone and then I’ll make your tea. You stay there.”

He took out his PADD and went into Spock’s kitchen to get the water ready for tea. While he waited he sent a message off to Denise, that was it, to tell her he was sorry he couldn’t make it, and he’d be unable to reschedule.

Because well…he hoped there was a reason he couldn’t.

He finished the tea and brought it out to the living room, but Spock was already asleep on the couch. Jim shrugged. He could just leave, he guessed, since Spock was out. But well, he didn’t want to, and maybe someone should keep an eye on Spock anyway.

So he sat in a chair nearby and decided to study. He drank the tea. It was kind of weird, but not bad. And when Spock woke up later, Jim hoped he’d be glad to see him.
