βDaddy, is that an elf?β
Jim Kirk looked to where his four-year-old son, David, pointed. They had just entered the department store in San Francisco. David had been asking to see Santa Claus.
At the moment, Jim had the care for his son as the boyβs mother and Jimβs ex, Carol Marcus, was off planet on a science expedition. Jim had readily agreed since it meant having David with him for the holidays. And now that he was on winter break from Starfleet Academy he no longer had to rely on his friends and fellow cadets to babysit.
Jimβs gaze widened as he grabbed Davidβs arm to keep him from rushing at the βelfβ. βEr, No. Thatβs aβ¦that manβs a Vulcan.β
And Jimβs current crush, Commander Spock, who had programmed the Kobayashi Maru Jim had taken and failed.
βOh. Okay,β David replied. He looked up at Jim. βDoes he know Santa?β
βWellβ¦β Jim was about to say he doubted it, but in fact Spock was standing next to and speaking with Uhura, who was wearing a red and white Santaβs helper uniform, and Santa. Or whoever wore the Santa costume for the store. βYeah, I guess maybe he does.β
βTake me to him,β David pleaded. βI want to ask him for what I want this year.β
He blew out a breath. He sure hoped David wasnβt going to come up with something like βmy parents back togetherβ or anything similar. Heβd met Carol back in Riverside when sheβd been there on a temporary assignment for Starfleet and before he had enlisted himself. Their relationship had been brief and wrought with more drama than either of them had wanted to deal with. They made far better friends and co-parents than lovers.
But kids sometimes just couldnβt understand adult issues and wanted for things that couldnβt be theirs.
Nevertheless, his responsibility as βdaddyβ was to make sure David got his chance. So, Jim took his sonβs hand and walked over to where they stood talking. He didnβt fail to notice the sign in front of Santaβs House that declared βSantaβs On a Break.β
Jim knew heβd probably get the brush off from Uhura and Spock, but maybe Santa would be nicer. He had to at least try.
As they approached he heard the lyrics of the song playing overhead.
He’s making a list, He’s checking it twice, Gonna find out who’s naughty and nice
βSanta Claus is coming to town,β he sang softly. He smiled down at David, who grinned back. He turned to the three standing there. βExcuse me, butβ¦β
Uhura looked at him. βKirk, canβt you see weβreβ¦β
βYes, but my sonβ¦β
Her gaze went to David and brightened instantly. βYou have a son?β
βYes. This is David. David, this is Ms. Uhura.β He glanced at Spock, feeling his face heat. He cleared his throat. βAnd this is Spock.β
βSpock?β David repeated, scrunching up his face. βIsnβt that the one you like, Daddy?β
Jim laughed, wanting to crawl away as Spock raised a brow. βUh, ha ha. Kids. They say the darndest things. Listen. I donβt want to take up your time, I just wanted to know when Santa wasβ¦Bones?β He stared at Santa.
Bones narrowed his eyes. βThatβs Santa Claus to you, son.β
David frowned. βI donβt see Uncle Bones. Where is he?β
Uhura kicked Jim. βHeβs not here. Your Daddy was mistaken.β
Jimβs jaw tightened. βHang on one second, David. Daddy wants to have a word with Santa Claus.β He glanced at Uhura. βCan you watch him for a second?β
βSure. Hey, David, do you want a candy cane?β
Jim grabbed Santaβs arm and pulled him out of earshot. βWhat the hell? Why didnβt you tell me you were going to be Santa at the store?β
βBecause you would have made fun of me for it.β
βNo, I wouldnβtβ¦okay, yeah, I would. But still.β
βListen, I just wanted some side income to send some stuff to my own kid. Plus have something to get David a gift. Itβs no big deal. Just a few hours a week.β
Jim nodded. βOkay. Well, when you talk to David try to talk him into something easy, will you?β
βYou want me to lead your son?β
βWell, you know. To like toys and stuff. Nothing like universal peace or mommy and daddy together again.β Jim grimaced.
βAll right, all right. And what was that about Spock?β
βNothing.β
He pushed Bones back to the others and saw that David not only had a candy cane but several foil wrapped chocolate balls.
Swell, he thought. A hyped up David would be just what he needed.
βUh. Thanks. Anyway I was wondering when Santaβs break would be over as my son wants to give him his wish list.β
βSantaβ looked down at Jimβs son. βHave you been nice, David?β
David nodded. ββCourse. Daddy says it always pays to be nice.β
Jim smiled.
βWell. I think you can tell him what you want right now, David. Santa can delay his break for you,β Uhura spoke up.
βThatβs right.β βSantaβ crouched down next to David and put his arm around him. βWhat do you want for Christmas, David? A toy space ship? A telescope? A little mini science lab?β
βNope. None of that.β
βEr. Um, then, books? Coloring books orβ¦β
βPerhaps it would be wise, Santa, to allow David to make the request himself,β Spock said.
βNo, Santa,β David said, voice small. βDaddy can get me all that. Or Mommy.β
βSantaβ glanced up at Jim, who shifted awkwardly. βAll right. What do you want?β
David glanced over at Spock and then back to Santa. βDaddy needs a boyfriend.β
βDavidββ
βHeβs super lonely and all he does is study and spend time with me. And Santa, I know he really really likes Spock.β
βHow do you know that?β
βHe told me!β
Jim saw Uhura smother a laugh and he glared daggers at her. βAll right, David. Iβm pretty sure weβve taken up too much of Santaβs break as it is. We should go.β
βBut Santa hasnβt saidβ¦β
βWell, now, David,β βSantaβ interrupted. βItβs very difficult to give gifts of people, you know.β
βSure. But Iβm sure if Mr. Spock got to know Daddy heβd really like him.β
Jim coughed. βLunch. Come on, kiddo. Weβll go to your favorite place. Say by to Santa now.β
David pouted a little. βOkay.β
And to Jimβs further embarrassment, David walked over to where Spock stood, looking unfailingly serene.
βI know Santa can work magic!β David said to Spock. βSee you later.β He waved frantically at Spock and then ran to where Jim waited. He smiled so brightly at Jim, he didnβt have the heart to be upset with the boy.
βDid you have fun?β Jim asked, as he steered his son away from the gawking group.
βYeah! And I got candy.β
Jim laughed. βI know. But before you eat too much of that, letβs get some real food.β
****
βDaddy, heβs here, heβs here!β
Jim frowned at his terminal screen, paused it, and looked over at his son who was standing nearby jumping up and down.
βWho?β
βSpock.β
Jim blinked. βWhat?β
βAt the door! Heβs here.β
He got up from is chair and came around the desk. βDavid, Iβve told you before not to answer the door. Come and get me.β
He hadnβt even heard someone at the door.
βOkay,β David said. βBut heβs here, heβs here.β
Jim couldnβt imagine what Spock was doing there. Heβd never been there before and Jim didnβt even know Spock knew where he lived.
He went over to the apartment door and peered out the peephole, but he couldnβt see much.
βItβs what I asked Santa for!β
βDavid, shhh. Itβs got nothing to do with Santa.β
He gestured for David to get back and then he opened the door.
Sure enough Spock stood there, dressed in his all black uniform, looking austere and intimidating.
Jim tried a smile. βHi.β
βGood evening. May I have a word?β
He cleared his throat. βSure. One second.β He turned back to David. βWait inside, okay? Iβll be back in a minute.β
βOkay, Daddy.β
Jim smiled and then stepped onto the landing outside his apartment. It was a beautiful day, really. His second-floor apartment faced out onto the garden area of the apartment complex. He preferred that then looking out over the pool or the street.
βSo, um, what can I do for you?β he asked Spock.
Spockβs gaze flicked briefly to the closed door. βYour son is quite appealing.β
βThank you.β
Spock nodded. βHisβ¦motherβ¦β
βSheβs off planet. Carol Marcus. Sheβs a scientist. Sheβs notβ¦β Jim licked his lips. βWeβre not together.β He cleared his throat. βAnymore.β
βI see.β Spock straightened. βI was wondering if I mayβ¦that is, if you might be free to have dinner with me at some point.β
βYes!β
Jim blushed, glancing quickly at the closed door. Clearly he needed to have a conversation with his son about listening in on adult conversations.
Spock quirked a brow but otherwise did not react to Davidβs yell.
Jim took a step further away from the door. βListen, um, what David said at the store.β
βChildren say all kinds of things,β Spock said quietly. βI am aware that you did not wish him to speak up, however I did hope there was some truth to what he said.β
Jim blinked. βYeah?β
Way to go, Jim, he thought. You sound so brilliant.
βLeonard McCoy did advise me that Davidβs words were truthful but ifββ
βBones did?β
Spock fell silent but nodded. His cheeks were just the tiniest bit green.
Jim laughed. βWell, then. I guess I shouldnβt bother to deny it.β
βWhat does that mean?β
βIt means, Professor, that Iβd love to have dinner with you at any point.β
βI see. Then I am gratified.β
βI do need to arrange for a babysitter, though. How does tomorrow night grab you?β
Spock inclined his head. βIt grabs me well.β
Jim grinned. βFantastic. See you then? Did you want to meet somewhere orβ?β
βI will come for you at seven tomorrow night.β
βOkay. Cool.β
Spock nodded again and then turned and walked over to the stairs that would take him to the ground level. Jim watched him the entire way until he was out of sight.
He exhaled deeply. βHeβs making a list, checking it twice. Gonna find out whoβs naughty or nice.β He shook his head. βGuess Iβve been nice.β
He turned back and opened his apartment door to face the eagers brightness in Davidβs face.
βGuess you were right, kiddo. It did have something to do with Santa.β
βYay!β He laughed, dropped to his knees and hugged his son.

Thank you! For every line, every sweet, sweet word. And as always, I’d love to see this become a big ol’ multi-chapter story! I could never get enough of this storyline.

Yes it’s definitely fluffy! I loved the idea of Jim having David when he was just starting out and so this little story came to mind. I don’t know about a multi-chapter fic or anything but I am glad you adored it enough to want that β€

Iβm behind in my reading because of RL ! π¦ …but this was wonderful to find! Love it!
Bones and Uhura, as Santa and his helper made me smile. Love little David blurting out that Jim likes Spock and then requesting a bf for Daddy! Lol!
Spock is certainly eager to act on this. Kudos to David, to Spock and most certainly to you, Ivan!
