“Jim.”

He was falling, falling, he couldn’t catch his breath, why…

“Jim, Jim.”

He was being shaken. So hard. Tears burned his eyes.

“Stop, you’re hurting me!”

“Jim, darling, please.”

Suddenly he gasped for breath and sat up straight. Hands were on his back and chest as he heaved for air.

“That is it, love. Breathe, that’s it.”

“Spock? Spock?”

“Yes, Jim, yes.”

Tears streamed down his face. Spock’s thumb wiped at him.

“A bad one?”

“Mmm.”

Spock pulled him close. “I will never let anyone or anything harm you. What did you dream? Not the monsters on Delta again?”

“No, honey, nothing like that.  Frank. Him throwing me out a window. Him shaking me until my teeth rattled for breaking a glass.  Think it’s probably being in this house, ya know?”

Spock was quiet for a while. “And you are sure he is no more?”

Jim looked at him quizzically. “Why?”

“I wish to kill him.”

“Someone did that a long time ago. Not long after Mom kicked him to the curb. He was an asshole who never did know when to keep his mouth shut.” He grabbed Spock’s hand. “I’m so glad you’re here.”

“I could never be anywhere else. I will follow you to the ends of the universe.”

Jim kissed him. “Right now, just follow me to breakfast.”

He was delighted when Spock laughed. He always loved to be surprised by his Vulcan.

“You’re amazing. And I smell waffles.”

You will see these guys one more time on Friday to wrap up June.

I already have 5 of the expected 9 Christmas in July’s scheduled. You can expect those Wednesdays and Fridays in July.

“And this is Jimmy when he was six months. See how cute his tooshie was?”

“Mom.”

“Indeed.”

Jim covered his face with his hands. “I don’t believe this.”

“If you two have a child someday imagine how beautiful they will be?”

Mother.”

His mom smiled in his direction. “It could happen. There are all kinds of methods.”

“We’ve only been bonded for—”

“Almost a year now, right?” Mom asked.

“Yes.” It was Spock who answered and though he wore no particular emotion on his face, Jim felt his amusement from their bond.

“Now, let’s see Jim at two.”

Jim jumped up from his seat and took the PADD with the digital pictures of his life away from her. “Let’s not. You can torture me with them later. We were all going to take you to lunch, remember?”

“Okay.” She smiled. “I’ll stop for now. Let me go get my coat.”

When she left to do so, Jim rolled his eyes and turned to Spock. “Sorry about that. She’s a little bit enthusiastic.”

“Her enthusiasm is sweet. She is pleased you are happy.”

“She is. Yeah. But I didn’t think she’d start in with the naked kid pictures.”

“You were adorable,” Spock assured him. “And she is not wrong.”

Jim laughed. “About my tooshie?”

“That too. That a child we would have would be beautiful.”

Jim’s eyes widened. “You aren’t actually thinking about that, are you?”

“I am.”

“Spock, we’re still on the Enterprise and…”

“After the next mission is over, of course.”

Jim snorted. “Of course.”

Spock patted Jim’s arm. ”There is a lot of time to think about it. In the meantime, I think I win.”

He frowned. “Win what?”

“Your mother is much more agreeable than my father.”

Jim chuckled. “Okay maybe. At least so far she hasn’t give us the ‘what are your future plans in Starfleet, James?’ speech.”

“Exactly. I’d rather look at old pictures of your youth anytime.”

Mom reappeared in her coat. “I’m ready.”

Jim smiled and kissed her cheek. “Come on. Time to spoil you.”

“Oh, I’m so glad you’re here.”

“Me too, Mom. Me too.”

Happy Birthday, J

“You know what today is, right?”

Chris looked up from the book he was reading to take a long sip of his coffee. “Flag day.”

Zach snorted. “Sure. Besides that.”

Chris popped a bite of chocolate chip rugelach into his mouth and chewed.  “Your friend’s birthday.”

“Uh-huh. That too.” Zach pointed. “You have, uh, you have pastry bits in your beard.”

Chris wiped at his beard with a napkin. “Guess I gotta take care of that. But what? If it’s not just Flag Day and your friend’s birthday, what is it?”

“Seven years ago on this day you told me you loved me for the first time.” Zach laughed. “I know. Corny as hell right?”

Chris smiled. “Nope. Well, maybe a little. But I fell in love with you because you’re corny.”

“A ringing endorsement,” he said dryly.

“Eh. I’m corny too. And I’d totally take you back to bed and show you how much I love you…except.”

Zach nodded. ”You’re making a movie.”

“Yeah. Which I’m already later for thanks to this morning’s activities.” Chris jumped up and left the kitchen.

“Don’t forget to clean off your beard!”

“Yeah yeah.”

Zach picked up his half-eaten rugalach and took a large bite.

“Hey, don’t eat my rugalach. I want to take it with me.”

“Uh.”

“Damn.” Chris came back in to the kitchen and kissed him. “Gotta go.”

Zach grinned, pulled him close once more, and kissed him for a much longer time.

“You sure we don’t have time to—”

“Positive. Get going.”

And Chris did. Zach looked down at the three…four demanding dogs.

Now he had to walk all of them. Great.

It’s wedding month so you get an extra flash

Enjoy!

“Would you care to dance?”

Jim was startled by the question. He’d been going over reports on his PADD. He was behind as usual. Why were there so many anyway?

He glanced down at the reports.

“Don’t really have much time.”

“It will not take long. I understand you like the song that they are about to play.”

Jim raised both brows. “Yeah? What song is that?”

“Almost Paradise.”

Jim chuckled. “Uh, yeah. Someone’s pulling your chain.”

“Do you want to dance or not?”

Jim shoved his PADD into a bag. ”Sure it’s your dime.”

“My…dime?”

Jim slid out of the booth. “Come on.”

He moved over to the dance floor of the establishment. The one who asked him followed and put his arm around Jim pulling him close.

“You are on shore leave.”

“Mm. I still have a ton of work to do.”

The song began to play as Spock pulled him even closer, leaning into him.

I thought that dreams belonged to other men
‘Cause each time I got close
They’d fall apart again

I feared my heart would beat in secrecy
I faced the nights alone
Oh, how could I have known
That all my life I only needed you?

Oh almost paradise
We’re knockin’ on heaven’s door
Almost paradise
How could we ask for more?
I swear that I can see forever in your eyes
Paradise

Jim’s heart raced as he lifted his gaze to Spock’s.

“Do you see forever?” Spock asked.

“Is this some sort of proposal?” Jim was half-joking.

“Yes.”

His eyes widened. “What?”

It seems like perfect love’s so hard to find
I’d almost given up
You must have read my mind

And all these dreams I saved for a rainy day
They’re finally coming true
I’ll share them all with you
‘Cause now we hold the future in our hand

“What is your answer?”

Jim moved in for Spock’s kiss.

“Yes. I say yes.”

“Maybe meeting your dad isn’t such a great idea.”

Spock gave Jim the side-eye. It was not the first time Jim had suggested he didn’t want to go with Spock to his father’s hotel in San Francisco.

Currently they were on leave between Enterprise missions. Sarek was on Earth and in San Francisco at the same time, performing ambassador duties.

Spock had, he thought wisely, suggested it was the perfect time for Jim and Spock’s father to become better acquainted.

“Technically you have already met him.”

“Are you…you’re talking about the time I emotionally compromised you, aren’t you?”

Spock hesitated. It was not something either of them liked to talk about. Jim felt guilt and Spock shame.

“Yes.”

Jim shook his head. “Great first impression.”

“Jim my father bears no ill will toward you regarding that. He is anxious to become more familiar with you as my mate.”

Which Jim was. They were fully bonded and had been for some time. Spock did not understand Jim’s hesitation.

He had absolutely no doubt Jim loved him and was fully committed.

“What is your hesitation in having dinner with my father at the hotel?”

“Parents of significant others do not like me.”

Spock was unaware Jim had ever had this experience before, so he stopped walking and made the query.

“Which significant other have you—”

“Back in Riverside. Before I enlisted. I was supposed to meet this girl’s mom and dad, right? Well. Turns out I had met one of them before and had a one-night stand with them.” Jim shook his head and winced. “Beyond awkward.”

“Which one?”

“Which…that doesn’t matter, Spock. The point is we were all mortified. That was the end of that.”

“You have not had a prior liaison with my father,” Spock pointed out.

“No, I know. But…”

Spock could not hide the fact he was disappointed. However, he would do anything to avoid hurting Jim in any way. “I will meet my father for dinner without you.”

“Spock—”

“It is fine, Ashaya. I wouldn’t want you to feel forced or uncomfortable.”

“No, I’ll go. I know it’s all part of it and I’d have to anyway. It’s just…I love you and I hate the idea of your dad not liking me.”

“I do not believe that will be the case, Jim, but if it is, that will change nothing between us. You are the most important being in my life and will remain so.”

Jim sighed. “You know what this means, don’t you?”

“Negative.”

Jim laughed then and leaned in to kiss Spock. “You are so meeting my mom.”

Logically, Spock had no reason to rush to the hospital. He had already been informed that his boyfriend, Jim Kirk, was stable and in good condition, and yet he found that he was rushing to be at Jim’s side, nevertheless.

He’d received the somewhat terse message from Jim’s difficult best friend, Leonard McCoy. He’d been forced to finish the course he’d been instructing before he was able to leave.

As soon as Spock stepped through the open door of the hospital room, he felt calmer. More relieved.

Jim sat up in the bed, hair adorably rumpled, a cup of something in his hands. His glance went straight to Spock. His expression brightened immediately and it was all Spock could do not to respond in kind.

“Spock!”

McCoy had been standing beside the bed talking to Jim. He frowned at Spock.

“Just a few minutes. He needs rest.”

“Don’t listen to him,” Jim said as Spock made it to his side. “Barely a scratch.”

“Doctor McCoy advised you had been struck by a hover car.”

Jim rolled his eyes. “It was a hover cart. You know the kind that the delivery guys use.”

“It knocked him to the ground and he hit his head,” McCoy said. “Got a concussion.”

“It really was nothing.” Jim smiled. “But I’m glad you’re here. Tell Bones I can go home.”

“You’re staying overnight for observation.”

“Oh come on. Spock, tell him it’s nonsense.”

“Now see here—”

Spock touched his fingers to Jim’s. “I bow to the doctor’s judgement, Jim.”

McCoy smiled and bounced up and down. “Well. That’s good then. Just a few minutes.”

And McCoy left them alone.

“You look worried,” Jim said softly.

“I am. Or was. I feel better now.”

“It really was just a small thing. I’ve got a hard head.”

“Hmm. Still I am glad it was not more serious.” Spock sat on the edge of the bed when Jim scooted over. “If you would like to delay—”

“No. No way. We’re leaving on Saturday for Vulcan to meet your parents.”

Spock nodded. “Very well. What is that you have?”

“Bones’ nasty broth. I’d kill for some coffee.”

“How about tea?”

“A milkshake?”

“Tea.”

Jim sighed. “Okay. And a cookie.”

Spock’s lips quirked. “And a cookie.” He kissed Jim’s forehead and went to fetch the tea and cookie, letting out the last of his worry and tension as he did so.

A little OMS to finish off the month, and a much happier ending for them.

It was getting late and Spock realized that Jim had still not come inside the farmhouse from “tinkering” in the garden all day.

Spock had dinner simmering on the stove, so he turned it down, and went outside to locate his mate.

Jim looked up from his spot on the ground of his garden when Spock approached. He smiled faintly. “Hi, sweetheart. Time to come in?”

“It is. You have been out here for several hours. You likely got a sunburn.”

Jim laughed. “I hear your disapproval there. Okay. Help me up.”

Spock reached down and tugged Jim to his feet. He noted the sweat on his mate’s brow.

“Come, I have your dinner ready as well.”

“You take good care of me.”

Spock nodded. “Someone has to.”

His mate laughed again and followed Spock into the house. “I’m a bit sore, I admit. And I do feel like I got too much sun.”

“Go and shower and I will have your dinner ready then for you when you come back down.”

“I’m starved.” Jim kissed him chastely. He patted his plump stomach. “Well, not really. I’m getting pretty chubby.”

“You look good to me.”

“That’s why I love you.” Jim chuckled. “Well not only.”

Spock smiled slightly as he watched Jim go up the stairs. He turned to the stove to see to the dinner when he noticed Jim had a message on his PADD asking him to attend the christening of the newest Enterprise. Spock frowned. He did not like this idea. He picked up Jim’s PADD and noticed Jim had responded.

“No, thank you. I think I’m going to skip it. I’m satisfied with my retirement with my husband, Spock. But I wish the new captain and his crew a good journey.”

Spock nodded, satisfied. And strangely, relieved.

And the conclusion…

In the morning, Spock approached Jim’s biobed cautiously. He still slept and the doctor had told Spock he’d had a restless night.

So had Spock.

Nyota had broached the subject as to whether Jim would ever recall his relationship with Spock and how the memory loss might be more permanent than McCoy suggested.  She had apologized afterward, but the idea had taken root in Spock’s mind.

At McCoy’s recommendation Spock had blocked their bond, but it felt uncomfortable to do so.

Spock was about to turn away when he heard Jim moan softly. He crept closer instead.

After a few seconds, the lids of Jim’s eyes lifted to reveal blue.

“Spock?” Jim croaked.

“How do you feel?” Spock asked cautiously. He did not want to hope too much.

“Weak. What-what happened?”

“You were injured during the mission to Alta Five.”

Jim blinked. “Can’t feel you.”

“Jim?”

“Are you shielding?”

Spock’s heart raced in his side. “Then…you remember we are bonded?”

Jim frowned. “Of course. Spock—”

Spock bent down and kissed Jim passionately, unshielding as he did so.

Jim smiled when Spock pulled back. “That’s better.”

“Much.” Spock definitely agreed.

“You’d better tell me what’s been happening.”

Spock held his hand. It was warm and the best feeling in the world to Spock, as their palms rested against each other.

“I will, ashayam. But first, let me get McCoy.”

“Hungry!” Jim called after him.

Spock smiled.

Flash Fic, June 25, 2021

“Do you understand what I’m telling you, Spock?”

“Yes, Doctor. Jim does not recall that we are together.”

McCoy nodded. “Yep. I’m sorry. I think he’s going to come out of the amnesia but it could take a bit of time.”

“Can I still go and see him?”

“Sure. But don’t expect a loving, romantic reunion, is all I’m saying.”

Spock arched a brow. “I won’t be long.”

McCoy patted his arm. “I’ll give you some privacy.”

Spock entered the area containing Jim’s biobed. He had his eyes closed and still looked pale to Spock. He opened his eyes when Spock approached.

“Hi,” Jim said softly.

“Captain.”

“Bones said, um, that you and I are…”

“Yes.”

Jim shook his head. “Strange.”

“And why is that?”

“We once hated each other.”

“I never hated you. But even still, that was a long time ago. Even prior to our relationship we had become friends,” Spock gently reminded him.

“Yeah. I know. Just…I don’t know what I’m trying to say. Sorry.”

“You owe no apology,” Spock told him. “Please rest. I will come again later.”

Spock turned away in disappointment even as Jim went back to closing his eyes. It was temporary, he tried to remind himself. Surely it was so.
