“Just because we had sex doesn’t make us married.”

Those harshly spoken words played over and over in his head like a stuck melody.

He was an ass, no doubt about it, and it had cost him everything.

Now he was alone on shore leave, probably alone period, and nursing a double scotch and staring out to sea, dealing with a broken heart.

He’d spoken unthinkingly, what else is new, in a moment of annoyance at Spock’s rather heavy-handed attitude. Naturally his Vulcan lover, former no doubt, had bristled at the rebuke and excused himself from Jim’s company.

That had been yesterday afternoon and Jim hadn’t seen him since.

Shore leave was over tomorrow. He’d be beaming back on board the Enterprise in late morning.

He only hoped a transfer request wasn’t waiting for him.

He’d rented this cozy little seaside cottage.  The lanai looked out over the ocean, and Jim was reclining on a rattan lounger, doing just that.

He was just a bit startled when a shadow fell across him in the late afternoon sun. He peered up and was startled to see Spock standing above him, looking down in barely disguised disapproval.

“Captain.”

“Commander.”

Jim pursed his lips. He was at fault, he knew he was. But damn it was hard to apologize.

“Spock, listen, I, uh, I was an ass. I’m sorry for what I said. I was drunk and pissy and the stuff you were saying was rubbing me the wrong way.”

“So it is my fault?”

Jim sighed. “No, no, that’s not what I’m saying. It’s completely my fault. And I’m sorry. I hope we can continue to work together as a command team in spite of all that.”

Spock stared at him. “All what?”

“The end of our relationship.” As brief as it was. They’d had sex, what, on two occasions?

“You give up so easily?”

“Well, no, I mean, well I…”

“Jim, if you thought I was overstepping—”

“I did, yes,” Jim admitted. “But the thing is, I don’t have a lot of experience—”

Spock raised his brow.

“With relationships. Other than the sex part.” He paused. “I have that part down.”

The Vulcan nodded. “Clearly.”

“Does that mean…well are we still, uh, you know.”

Spock sighed. “Yes, we still are. However, in the future if you think I am overstepping, I request you find a more polite way to inform me. I am quite aware we are not married.”

Jim winced. “Yeah. Uh. Like I said, I was being an ass. And I’ve thought about it and it was just a slight overstep, and I overreacted. I’m really sorry I spoiled our shore leave.”

“Fortunately, we still have one more night.”

Jim set his scotch down on the ground beside him. “C’mere.”

“We will both not fit.”

“I’ll make us fit.”

Spock shrugged slightly and joined Jim on the lounger. And Jim was right, they fit.

Flash Fic, March 09, 2022

A couple of people mentioned they could see a longer fic involved with the flash where Jim asked Spock to accompany them to Spring Break in Monterey. It was implied that Jim and Spock had spent a night together.

I’ve decided to make it a longer fic that will be posted on AO3 called Spring Break (I know, how original LOL) but I wanted to post the first part here. Eventually when I post to AO3 this might be expanded, but you get the gist of it here.

Thank you.

It had been a day like any other.
Jim was sitting at a small two-seater table outside a café restaurant a couple of blocks from Starfleet Academy. He had a carafe of coffee and a half-eaten BLT sandwich in front of him. He would take an occasional bite of the sandwich and would refill his cup from the carafe every once in a while.
His attention was on the PADD he used to do his Academy work and so he was therefore startled when a shadow moved across his table.
“I am looking for a good time.”
A Vulcan stood there. A very good looking, smoldering Vulcan. He wore black jeans and a black pullover sweater.
“Excuse me?”
“You are James Kirk?”
“Uh, yeah.”
The Vulcan nodded and sat down in the chair across from Jim. “I am Spock.”
“Okay.” Jim nodded. “Spock. What did you just say?”
“I am looking for a good time.”
“Well, all right, but, uh. I’m not really sure—”
Spock thrust his own PADD at Jim, where he spotted a highlighted paragraph.
“I read your ad.”
“My…”
Looking for a good time? Look no further than me, James Kirk, sex god extraordinaire. I can often be found at the Starlight Café. Come see me and we’ll have a great time.
Jim’s jaw dropped open. “I didn’t—”
“Normally I do not respond to such advertisements, but these are extraordinary circumstances. I do not wish to interrupt anything, but if you are available at the moment, my apartment is not far.”
Jim closed his mouth and stared at Spock. Lord, he was just gorgeous. And normally, Jim would be laughing at the absurdity of it all. And he had a pretty good idea what idiot was behind the phony ad.
The thing was, when was he going to get to have sex with someone like Spock? Hardly ever. Okay never. But yet here was opportunity knocking.
“I, ah, yes. I’m available right now.”
Spock nodded. “Excellent.”
He took back his PADD and rose, so Jim closed down his, and rose also. He discarded the remains of the rest of his sandwich and followed Spock from the café.
****
Jim turned onto his back, panting. Beside him, Spock was doing the same.
“Very well, your advertisement was quite correct, James.”
Now Jim did laugh. Because honestly.
“Actually, it’s Jim. And to be honest, Spock, I didn’t place that advertisement.”
Spock turned to his side and stared at Jim. “What?”
Jim faced him. “Look, that was incredible. You’re amazing. I loved every minute of that and I think we really should do it again. Like in thirty minutes or so.”
“I do not understand.”
“Yeah, well, that makes two of us. Sorta. Listen, what made you decide to answer that ad? Vulcans don’t usually have casual sex, do they?”
“Not often but it is not unheard of,” Spock replied. “In my case, I was…I wished to be a bit rebellious of the authority my father seeks to have over me.”
“Your old enough to make your own decisions,” Jim pointed out.
“Yes, but my father is…not like normal fathers, I expect.”
Jim smiled wistfully. “I wouldn’t know.”
“I suppose you would not,” Spock acknowledged. “He seeks to control my life even now that I have vacated Vulcan and live my life here. I had a moment where I wished to…”
“Rebel.” Jim smiled. “I get it. And I’m really glad you could rebel with me. But, Spock, I placed no such ad.”
“Then—”
“I have a sort of friend, a classmate named Finnegan. It’s just the sort of thing he’d do, so I am thinking he had a hand in this.”
Spock was quiet.
“Are you okay?”
“I am…embarrassed. A new experience for me.”
Jim moved closer. “Don’t be. However this happened, I’m really glad it did. And I meant what I said. I want to go again.” He kissed Spock, who after a moment’s hesitation, kissed back. “And maybe even beyond tonight. Do you think?”
“Perhaps.” Spock smiled slightly. “The advertisement was still accurate, nevertheless. You may wish to contact them to have it removed lest you get more interested parties.”
“I will for sure.”
“I, too, am glad,” Spock said, softly, almost shyly. “Though I suspect you must think me particularly odd and given to rash decisions. I assure that is normally far from the truth.”
“Oh, I believe that,” Jim assured him. “I don’t think you’re odd. And in this case, I’m glad for your rash decision.” He kissed Spock again, longer, more lingering.
“Thirty minutes?” Spock murmured.
Jim grinned. “Perhaps less. A lot less.”

Flash Fic, March 02, 2022

A new month has begun. As I said, no particular theme, flashes at whim.

“Fun in the sun!” Bones exclaimed. “Lying on beautiful beaches with fine sand and even finer women.”

Jim smiled faintly at his friend’s excitement for their upcoming spring break from Starfleet Academy. He couldn’t blame Bones for his enthusiasm. The last few weeks had been grueling.

But admittedly, Jim’s own mind was on other things. He glanced past his friend to the table beyond where Spock sat by himself, back to them.

“I think I’m going to ask Spock to come with us.”

Bones stopped mid-sentence as he’d been waxing poetic about all the plans he was making. “Who?”

Jim shrugged. “You know. Uh, Spock.”

“What in the world for?”

“Because, you know, it’s the nice thing to do. And I am sorta, kinda seeing him.”

Bones stared at him. “A one-night stand does not count.”

“It’s only a one-night stand because it only happened once.”

“That’s usually the meaning, yeah,” Bones said dryly.

“What I mean, Bones, is I intend it to be more than the one time.”

“Okay, you’re crazy, but whatever. Can’t you do all that after our fun in the sun?”

Jim sighed. “I could, yeah.”

Bones smiled.

“But I don’t want to. It’ll be okay. He might not even agree.”

“He will. You’ll turn those baby blues and that saucy smile and he’ll be putty in your hands, just like everyone else.”

“You exaggerate.”

Jim rose, squeezed Bones slumped shoulder, and headed over to sit across from the Vulcan he’d recently spent a night of very excellent sex with.

“Hey.”

Spock, all somber in instructor black, glanced up at him from his PADD. “Jim.”

“You busy?”

“I am always busy. What is on your mind?”

“Paradise.”

Spock arched a brow.

“Of the kind we had the other night, yeah, but also…spring break is in a few days.”

“Mmm.”

“You aren’t going to Vulcan, are you?”

“I have no plans to visit soon, no.”

“Well, Bones and I, I told you about him, we’re planning on going to Monterey for the week. There’s a resort right on the beach with amazing views and a bar right there with tropical drinks. You know the Aquarium is within walking distance, too. Wanna come with me?”

“Your friend will not mind?”

“Nah, he’s good with it,” Jim lied, because he wasn’t about to say ‘he’s throwing a fit but he’ll deal.’ Jim smiled. “What do you say?”

“Would we room with him?”

Jim shook his head. “No, we can get our own room. You and me and paradise. You’d like to go, wouldn’t you?”

Spock took a sip of the tea beside him. “I would like to experience the Monterey Bay Aquarium.”

Jim smelled victory.

“And getting time to spend with you would be an added bonus.”

Jim laughed. “I’m so trying not to be offended that you didn’t say that you’d like to experience more time with me and that visiting the aquarium would be the added bonus.”

“I mean no offense.”

“I know you don’t,” Jim said, reaching out his hand toward Spock and being happily surprised when Spock took his hand. “I had an amazing time the other night and I really want some more amazing times. What do you say?”

“I say that I will join you, yes.”

“Awesome.”

Spock’s lips curved ever so slightly. “In fact, I had been considering contacting you to come over to—”

“Yes.”

“I had not finished.”

“I still say yes. What time?”

“As soon as you are done with your day.”

“I’m done now.”

“Excellent.” Spock turned off his PADD and pushed back his chair. “Let’s be on our way.”

Jim looked at the sky above, noticing the increase of clouds coming in. With a frown, he noted the decline in temperature as well.

A storm was on its way and though it was a bit cliched, Jim could, in fact, feel it in his bones. Years of misuse had given him arthritis in just about every joint.

Spock still wasn’t back from his trip to San Francisco. He was expected back that evening, but with the volatile weather, Jim guessed it was possible his shuttle flight would be delayed until morning. At least. Since Jim didn’t know how long this storm that was coming would last.

He finished loading the wheelbarrow with firewood and brought it to the back door of their house. It took a few trips to get it all inside but Jim wanted to prepared to have plenty of wood for fires if Spock made it home in time. His Vulcan got cold easily and not appreciate the probable snowstorm.

He had plans for a vegetable minestrone soup for dinner too.

Jim checked his messages but there was nothing from Spock to indicate he wasn’t coming, so he decided that was a good sign. He got to work building a fire and putting the soup on.

He decided he’d lost track of time, because before he knew it, he heard the sound of a hover car just outside the house. He went to the window, and sure enough, Spock was getting out of a hover taxi, bags in hand.

Warmth blossomed in Jim’s chest as he went to the front door to greet his husband. He opened the door and drew Spock into his arms.

“You made it before the storm hit.”

“I left early for that very reason.”

Jim thoroughly kissed him. “That explains why I thought I’d lost track of the time. God, I’m thrilled you’re here. I have the fire going and soup is on.”

Spock’s lips curved as he pulled Jim in for another kiss. “I am glad to be home.”

“He’s waking up, Spock.”

Jim groaned as he heard voices around him. He put his hand up to his head.

“Easy, Jim. Don’t want you messing up that bandage.”

He frowned.  “Bones?”

“That’s right. You’re okay, you’re in the medbay.” Bones paused. “Spock’s here.”

Jim opened his eyes to garish red. And pink. Balloons.

“What the hell?”

“It’s Valentine’s Day.“  Bones chuckled. “Your admirer sent presents.”

“Admirer?”

“You are confusing him, Doctor.”

Suddenly Spock was there by his side instead of the balloons. He smiled.

“Think he’s high on pain meds,” Bones cracked. “I’ll give you a few minutes with him.”

Spock took his hand. “T’hy’la.”

“Everything’s going to be okay, Spock.”

“I believe I am supposed to be saying that to you.” He put his hand on Jim’s cheek. “You take too many chances, Ashaya.”

“So do you,” Jim returned. “What happened?”

“You were shot and then you fell off a cliff. I nearly had a heart attack.”

“Sorry. You know I love you.”

“I love you, too, though I am uncertain what that has to do with anything.”

Spock gave him the perfect snooty Vulcan look.

“Well, in case you worried. With all my admirers,” Jim joked.

“I am not worried.” Spock kissed him. “I am the one who brought the balloons.”

Jim grinned. “You’re so romantic.”

Spock made a humphing sound and then Bones returned.

“All right, he needs rest, Spock, and so do you. And no I’m not pulling out a bed for you. In your quarters. See him again in the morning.”

“Bones is right, Spock. Go get some rest. And take care of my ship!” Jim called after his husband as he drifted off once more.

“What is a guy like you doing in a place like this?”

Spock’s lips quirked as he looked up from his PADD into the sparkling blue eyes of the too good-looking Human who stood beside his table.

“The duty roster, actually.” Spock gestured to the seat across from him. “Why don’t you join me?”

“If you insist.”

The Human plopped down with an overly dramatic sigh. He picked up the fork Spock had discarded and poked at Spock’s half-eaten fruit bowl.

“Not sure that’s actually real fruit.”

“Doubtful,” Spock acknowledged. “Bored, Captain?”

Jim grinned. “Beyond belief. I’ve been looking for you.”

“And so you have found me.”

“How much longer?”

Spock arched a brow. “What do you have in mind?”

“A little horizontal something something.”

At that he shook his head. Not in an answer to the suggestion but rather to Jim’s word choice.

“Ah come on.”

“You need to eat.”

“Okay, well, then we can have a romantic dinner first. Or, you know, as is my preference, after.”

“The duty roster—”

“I’ll do it while we eat. Or you can. Or together, whatever. Come on, Spock, this is the first time we’ve had time to breathe in a long time. We should spend it together in our quarters, basking in our love.”

Both eyebrows shot up at that.

Jim laughed. “I read that on a love card.”

“A love card?”

“Yeah you know romance, Valentine’s.”

“It is Groundhog’s Day,” Spock pointed out.

“Right, but V day is coming. You’re stalling. Let’s go have a little romance.”

Spock shut down his PADD and rose, reaching down to pull Jim up from his seat, too.

After all it was only logical to romance one’s husband, Spock supposed.

As they walked along the corridor, close enough to touch, there were some crew members who would swear their fingers were touching.

Flash Fic, January 26, 2022

“Have you ever been in love before, Spock?”

Spock was surprised by the question and he lifted his gaze from concentrating on the chess game before them.

He had been somewhat surprised by the invitation, too. Jim had assured him that they used to play chess all the time back on the Enterprise. Prior to Spocks’ demise.

Jim smiled faintly and he wasn’t actually looking at Spock.

They were on Vulcan, after the events as had been explained to Spock where Spock was revived after being found on Genesis, and his Katra returned to him. There was still many things Spock could not recall.

“I mean really in love. Not just…infatuation.”

“I am uncertain,” Spock replied, noncommittedly. Because he was unsure where this conversation was going, what Jim’s point was.

“There were times I was sure it was love,” Jim said musingly. “Do you remember Edith Keeler?”

He started to shake his head, but then stopped, as he thought about it. “Yes, I believe that I do recall her.”

At that Jim’s gaze rose. There was a twinkle in those hazel eyes but also sorrow. An interesting enigma.

“In the time I knew her I had convinced myself I was in love with her.”

“Were you not?”

Jim shook his head. “Not as I know it now. She was a remarkable woman, but I now recognize my feelings as infatuation. And Miramanee.”

“What about her?”

“Perhaps my feelings for her were more like love, I don’t know.”

Spock only had a very faint recollection of her, so he did not pursue it, he shrugged and moved his piece.

“I guess my point here, Spock, is…I thought I knew what love was or was supposed to be, anyway, but none of what I felt for any of those women compared or compares to what I feel for you.” Jim shook his head. “To lose you. And then lose my son—”

“I am sorry.”

“That was not you. Then to find you almost barely alive again where you were discarded by the Klingons. I thought-I thought everything was for nothing.”

Spock realized Jim’s eyes were filled with unshed tears.

“Love is willing to give up everything for that other person. Your life, even. To give up everything so that they can live, so that they can find happiness, even if all you can spend with them is ten minutes, it is worth it.”

“Jim—”

Jim shook his head and wiped at his eyes. “I just thought. I thought you should know.”

Spock said nothing as the room fell silent and Jim, eventually, moved his chess piece.

Then Spock said, “Yes, Jim. I have been in love.” His gaze met Jim’s. “I still am.”

Jim smiled.

“And, Jim, checkmate.”

Flash Fic, January 05, 2022

Spock has been unsettled ever since the events surrounding Psi 2000. Oh, he is back to his normal self, no longer feeling any effects of the infection, and yet Spock still suffers some…embarrassment…from his behavior.

He hovers outside the captain’s quarters, feeling an inexplicable need to either or apologize or explain himself and the things he said, but now that he is there, he feels more uncertain.

Spock supposes he wouldn’t have even thought about it, but there’s no doubt that Kirk has treated him somewhat differently since their encounter in the conference room. He is about to turn away, deciding not to speak about it after all, when the door of Kirk’s cabin suddenly opens, and the captain looks startled to see him.

Spock does not blame him.

“Mister Spock? Was there something you wanted to speak with me about?”

Did he? Well, if there is one thing Spock is not, it is coward.

“If I may have a moment?”

“Sure.” Kirk steps back to let him inside.

The door closes behind him, after his entry. He doesn’t want to stay long, he wants this over and done with.

“I wish to apologize.”

“Oh?”

“My…behavior…”

Kirk cuts him off with a shake of his head. Then, “Forget about it, Spock.”

“The things I said while in the conference room—”

Kirk smiles. “I’ve already forgotten about them.”

“Have you?” he asks doubtfully.

“Of course. Many of us did and said things we now regret, Mister Spock. I don’t hold that against any man or woman.” He pauses, his smile widening. “Especially you.”

“Why especially me?”

“Well.” He shrugs. “Those things we experienced. The out of control emotions and the insanity that went with them—”

“One of the reasons Vulcans follow Surak’s teachings is because we view many emotional responses as…insanity.”

“I know. Which is why I don’t blame you most of all. It was something none of us were used to, and especially you. Whatever you said, whatever you felt while under the influence of the infection…I’ve forgotten about it. And forgiven too. I suggest we, all of us, move on from that.”

Spock is more than willing to move on, so he nods. “Very well, Captain.”

“Is that all, Mister Spock?”

“Indeed.”

“I was about to go to the mess for some dinner. Care to accompany me?”

Spock nods again. “That would be agreeable.”

They exist the cabin and fall into step beside each other even as McCoy suddenly appears to join them.

“Where are we going?”

“Dinner.”

“Excellent, I’m hungry.”

And for the first time since they left the dying planet of Psi 2000, Spock feels like most everything has returned to the way it should be.

It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Advent Day 22

Photo by Jonathan Meyer on Pexels.com

Jim grimaced as the last of the firemen exited his apartment, carrying the remains of his burned Christmas tree. As the last man went through the door, a stray cracked ornament ball crashed to the ground. Spraying glass everywhere.

The captain of the fire department shook his head.

“Sorry, kid. Sometimes this happens. Faulty wire on a too dry tree.”

“That’s what I get for trying to have a real one.”

“It could have been worse. The damage was confined to the tree.” He paused. “And your oven where you burned your dinner.”

Jim rolled his eyes. “Not my day that’s for sure. Or my whole month.”

“Might take a while for the smell to dissipate but you should be fine.” He smiled slightly. “Merry Christmas.”

“Yeah, thanks, you too.” Jim closed and locked the door after he left. He turned to look at the mess the whole thing made. They’d cleaned up somewhat, but now there was more to clean and the glass from the last broken ornament too. “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year my ass.”

A short while later while he was in the middle of sweeping up glass, there was a knock at the door. For a moment, Jim just stood there, trying to figure out who would be at his door.

“Oh Crap.” He stepped over some of the glass and went to the door to open it. “Uh, sorry. I forgot to tell you the date was canceled. I meant to text you.”

The Vulcan at his door tilted his head and looked perplexed. “I smell smoke.”

“Er, yeah. That’s why it’s canceled. The date I mean. And hell, the whole damn holiday season. My tree caught fire, the Vulcan dish I was trying to make is now best described as charcoal. It’s all a disaster. I am. Actually. You’d better make your escape now, Spock.”

Up went Spock’s eyebrow. “Are you finished?”

“Maybe,” Jim said mulishly.

Spock nodded. “May I come in?”

“Why would you want to?”

“To assist you in cleaning up. And to have our date.”

“But—”

“I am already here. I see little reason to depart now.” Spock paused. “Unless you no longer have any desire to pursue things between us.”

“Believe me, I have all kinds of desires.”

Spock stepped inside and closed the door.

“Then one could say you are wasting time arguing with me. Let us clean up the mess and then make plans to substitute the burned food with something else.” Spock paused. “And perhaps you should plan to vacate this apartment for the foreseeable future and stay with me.”

Jim smiled, feeling suddenly a lot better. Sure his tree was still gone and the food in the trash, but Spock was here.  And wanted Jim to stay with him.

“It is the most wonderful time,” he whispered.

“Jim?”

“Nothing.” Jim grabbed Spock’s hand, leaned in and kissed him.
