And so it begins for November. Family and Gatherings. If sentimental hogwash isn’t your thing, you may want to skip this month and next! HA HA

We gather together to ask the Lord’s blessing

He chastens and hastens his will to make known:

The wicked oppressing now cease from distressing

Sing praises to his name, he forgets not his own.

Jim Kirk smiled faintly as he stood outside the old church, listening to the hymn they sang. It brought back many memories. Good ones this time.

He glanced overhead at the sky, fluffy white with clouds. A perfect Earth day.

A short time later he was aware of the service breaking up, so he stood aside as church members exited the church and waited.

It had slowed to a trickle when he saw her. She was frail, very thin and slightly hunched over. But he would recognize her anywhere.

He stepped out. “Gran.”

Her eyes widened and then almost immediately filled with tears. “Jim!”

She practically ran into his open arms as he pulled her close, holding her tight against him as she wept.

“They said you were dead,” she managed to wail out.

“Nah.” He tightened his grip.

After a few minutes of crying she finally pulled back but only a little. Her shaky hands touched his cheeks.

“It is you. I’d know that beautiful face anywhere.”

He laughed. “Of course it’s me.”

‘Gran’ was his dad’s mom. As close as he’d ever get to knowing his dad. As a child he’d spent a few summers with her and even a Christmas. She was his favorite person in the whole universe, really.

He linked his arm with hers. “I’m here for a visit.”

“How long?”

“A week.”

And then Spock appeared, walking toward them.

Gran frowned slightly. “Who is this?”

Spock stopped before them and bowed slightly. “Spock of Vulcan, ma’am.”

“Vulcan.” She nodded. “I’m sorry for the loss of your planet, young man.”

“Thank you.”

She looked from Jim to Spock. “And you are?”

“Jim’s first officer.”

“Hmm. I’d say you’re more than that. My home’s right there.”

And it was. She’d always had a home right next to the church she attended. She liked to walk there.

A few minutes later, she was letting them into her house.

“And here you are at Thanksgiving!” Her eyes lit with joy. “You’ll be staying here of course!”

Jim smiled. “We’d love to.”

“Sharing a room, are you?” She looked pointedly at Spock.

“If convenient.”

She waved her hand. “I’m old enough to have seen everything, young man. If you’re sweet on my Jim, that’s good enough for me.”

Spock’s lips twitched. “I am.”

Gran laughed. “Good. Now we can plan our feast.”

“I’ll cook for us, Gran. You should rest.”

She snorted. “Stuff and nonsense. We’ll cook together.”

“Like old times.”

“Yes.” She took his hand and held it. “George would have been so proud of you.”

He leaned in and kissed her cheek. “I’m happy if you are. That’s what matters to me.”

She got teary again. “Of course I am. And absolutely thrilled to know you aren’t dead. I’ve lost too many of my boys.”

“I know. I’m sorry. I should have found a way to let you know.”

She sniffed. “You’re here now. And it’s going to be quite the party!”

He laughed, kissed her and hugged her again.

“It sure is.”

And now we come to the end of October flashes for 2022

Vanik knew his two uncles, Spock and Jim, were not having a costume party, per se, but he didn’t get a chance to dress up in a getup, well, every, so he dressed in a medieval knight costume, made of fabric rather than steel, of course, and headed over to their apartment in eager anticipation.

He was momentarily nonplussed when the door did not open as soon as he knocked. They had been expecting him.

Vanik knocked again.

This time it opened after a short hesitation and his uncle, Spock, stood there. He did not look happy to see Vanik. He never did, of course as no Vulcan wanted to look happy, but this was a…specific unhappiness.

“Vanik, I think we have to cancel tonight.”

Vanik stepped inside the apartment, filled with dread. He recalled the winter season when his uncle had made a mess of everything with Jim and Jim had gone to Riverside. Vanik had to go after him to fix things. He certainly hoped Spock hadn’t sent Jim packing again.

Then he saw Jim.

Jim was pacing back and forth, looked very upset, and had a red face as though he’d been crying.

“What is wrong? What happened?” Vanik asked.

“Vanik.” Jim stopped. Shook his head. “I’m sorry, buddy, but I can’t do this. Not tonight.”

And then to Vanik’s astonishment Jim left both him and Spock standing there in the living room, departing for the bedroom he shared with Spock.

Vanik turned to Spock with a questioning look. “What have you done?”

“I have not done anything. I am not responsible.” Spock eyed him. “What are you supposed to be?”

“A knight. What has him upset if not you?”

“Vanik, this is adult stuff and—”

“Please do not dismiss me as though I am incapable of understanding adult upsets. If our plans are canceled I would like to know why.”

Spock was quiet for a moment, then nodded. “Jim’s brother was here in San Francisco and failed to let Jim know. When Jim asked him about it he told Jim he had no desire to reconnect with any of his family members, Jim included.”

“That is terrible.”

“Yes. Jim says he doesn’t really have a family and he’s been upset since.”

Vanik crossed his arms over his chest. “And you told him that was wrong, right?”

“What?”

He sighed. “We are his family. It sucks that his brother is too stupid to want Jim in his life, but that does not mean Jim has no family. He has us. We are his family. Plus, I believe Jim still has his mother, wherever she is. But regardless, he definitely has us.”

“True.”

Vanik nodded. “You go in and tell him he has all the family he needs.”

“Vanik—”

Vanik stared Spock down, but to his satisfaction Spock finally went to the bedroom.

Many minutes passed but Vanik decided to occupy himself by getting all their food, snacks, and candy ready. If Vanik was correct, Jim would come out and wish to gobble lots of food. Humans often ate when upset and Jim was no different as far as Vanik could tell.

A half an hour later, the bedroom door opened and both Jim and Spock came out.

Jim smiled when he saw what Vanik had done to set up the place for their festive night.

“This looks great.” Jim walked over to Vanik and knelt down beside him. “And I’m sorry.”

“Are you feeling better now?”

“I am. Thanks to you. Spock told me what you said. And you’re right.” He gave Vanik a hug which Vanik happily returned. “Now let’s get this party started.”

It was a food fest as well as a scare fest and Jim even let Vanik sit on the couch with him and Spock.

It was a Happy Halloween.

“You said you’d carve a pumpkin with me.”

Sam gave his brother a nasty look. “I changed my mind. Another day.”

“But it’s almost Halloween and you said—”

“I’m not going to carve a damn pumpkin with you, all right? Halloween sucks and you’re too old to be dressing up and going trick or treating and carving pumpkins.”

Jim stood there holding the pumpkin he’d wanted to carve. He could feel the sting of the tears pooling in his eyes, and the painful lump in his throat.

Sam crossed his arms in front of his chest. “Anyway, you need to grow up. Things are going to change around here.”

“Change?”

“That’s right. I’m making plans to split.”

Jim blinked, aware that dislodged some of the tears he’d fought to suppress onto his cheeks. “You can’t leave.”

“Watch me.”

“Keptin, we’re beginning the pumpkin carving contest. Didn’t you want to compete, sir?”

Jim forced a smile as the memories of Sam’s cruelty and abandonment got pushed aside. “I think there are plenty of competitors, Ensign. I’ll be happy to judge.”

Chekov nodded. “Okay, Keptin.”

Jim was aware of Spock moving over to appear by his side. “Hey.”

“You are not participating in the festivities?”

“Not these ones, no.” He sighed and ran his fingers through his hair. “The whole…pumpkin carving thing sort of brings up some memories from my childhood I’d rather forget.”

He remembered throwing and destroying that pumpkin he’d picked out of so many at the pumpkin farm after Sam’s rejection. It made him sad the instant he’d smashed it to bits. All it had done was upset him, not Sam, and Jim figured he’d learned an important lesson that day.

He turned to face Spock when he realized the Vulcan was watching him carefully.

“What?”

“I do not like it when you are…melancholy.”

“Sorry, sweetheart.”

“You owe me no apology. I know that this relationship is new for both of us, I just do not know what to do to clear the clouds I see in your eyes sometimes.”

Jim smiled and put his hand on Spock’s arm. “You’re doing good, I promise. Help me judge these things?”

“Of course. Though I am not certain I can be entirely unbiased. Nyota has entered.”

“Yeah? What’s she doing?”

Spock paused. “Us.” Jim laughed. “This I gotta see.”

“What candy should we get?”

Spock paused from peering into his shopping cart to make sure Vanik hadn’t added extra items he didn’t think were necessary to flick a glance at his nephew.

The little pest, to use Jim’s affectionate nickname for him, had insisted on going to the market with Spock as he prepared to select things for their Halloween movie night. Jim had decided the task of shopping should be left to Spock.

Jim had an important simulation test coming up he was preparing for and Jim had given Spock his best captain look, even though he was not yet one, and Spock had decided it was wise not to argue.

As he was departing for the shopping trip, Vanik had arrived to visit and Jim sent Spock’s nephew off with him. Somewhat gleefully, Spock noticed.

“Candy?”

“It’s going to be Halloween,” Vanik replied. “Jim has a sweet tooth.”

Spock stared at him. “Jim does.”

It wasn’t entirely a lie, Spock conceded. Jim was fond of certain sweets and candy was among them. But he also knew no one could beat Vanik for his love of all things sweet.

“And me. Hell hath no fury like a man whose mate forgot his candy,” Vanik made up on the spot.

Spock sighed. The pest wasn’t wrong. And he absolutely hated displeasing Jim. Likely other Vulcans would call him an illogical sap, but there it was.

“What do you recommend?” Spock asked as he wheeled his cart toward the Halloween candy display.

“He likes peanut butter cups.”

“True.”  Spock selected two bags while Vanik nodded his approval.

“And the nougat with the peanuts.”

Vanik’s favorite.

Spock picked up a bag and then added a second when Vanik gave him puppy dog eyes.

“Gummy worms?”

Spock nodded and added them and sweetarts as he knew Jim liked those too. “That is most certainly enough.”

“All right! Time to check out.”

And Vanik ran ahead. Spock wasn’t sure he ever had that much energy. But he followed after him, wondering how early he could get Vanik to go home. He wanted to spend some private time with his mate.

Jim Kirk stopped before the sign attached to an auditorium on the Academy’s campus.

“Pie contest,” he read.

His best friend, Leonard “Bones” McCoy finally caught up to him as Jim read the words out loud. Bones had been lagging behind per usual.

“Ooh. I could do a pie eating contest.” He patted his belly. “Now that’s the kind of Harvest fun I can get onboard with. None of this other stuff like a carnival. Do you know how dangerous those old rickety rides are?”

Jim smiled. “Not a pie eating contest, Bones. A pie baking contest.”

“Baking? Oh forget it.”

He shook his head and laughed. “My mom used to make a mean pecan pie.”

“Mean, huh? Did it bite you? Forget it. You don’t want to enter. Maybe we could sign up to be judges.”

“What qualifications do you have to judge pies, Bones?”

He patted his stomach again. “I know how to ‘em. What other qualifications do I have to have?”

“Well—”

“There you are, Jim.” Spock came up behind them, hands clenched behind his back. “Doctor.”

“Spock,” Bones returned.

“I hope you were not waiting long,” Spock said.

“No, just got here. Was thinking about the pie contest. Bones wants to judge.”

“I believe I heard they had all the judges they required.”

Jim smiled. “Spock’s on the Harvest planning committee.”

“Reluctantly.” He eyed Bones. “I believe they are still looking for volunteers for the dunking booth at the carnival.”

“Harty har har. No thanks.”

“Also someone to dress up as a clown in the funhouse.”

Jim grinned as they started walking. “You’d make a good scary clown, Bones.”

His friend snorted. “I think I’ll stick to being a guest. All that greasy makeup messes with my beautiful skin.”

“Maybe I’ll be a clown.”

“You are a clown.”

Jim just laughed and caught up with Spock’s long strides, leaving Bones behind.

“Lunch?”

Spock’s lips quirked upward. “Indeed.”

And so October flashes begin!

Photo by Toni Cuenca on Pexels.com

“Oh. Hey kid.”

Vanik was pleased when Jim stepped aside to allow him to enter the apartment Jim shared with Vanik’s Uncle Spock. He glanced around, already anticipating Jim’s Halloween decorations throughout the apartment.

Jim closed the door and turned to Vanik with his usual congenial smile. “Would you like a snack?”

“I would, yes.” He followed Jim into the kitchen. Jim always kept the best snacks. Spock didn’t prior to meeting Jim. Vanik was responsible for their relationship and he was quite proud of that.

“Cheese flavored chips or pretzels?”

“Where are the decorations?” Vanik asked rather than respond to the question. He didn’t really want to make a choice, he wanted them both.

“Hmm?”

“The bats, the skeletons, the ghosts. It’s October.”

“October third.”

“Yes you had two days to begin.”

Jim shrugged. “I’m going light on decorations this year.” He pointed to the coffee table. “I have a pumpkin.”

“That’s it?”

Jim smiled. “Chips or pretzels?”

“Both?” Vanik said hopefully.

“A kid after my own heart. Both it is.” Jim got out a giant plastic bowl and filled it with the cheese chips and pretzels.

Vanik started munching as he sat on the bar stool next to the kitchen counter. “Uncle Spock won’t eat these, huh? Since it’s got cheese dust.”

“Well, yeah, and he thinks their messy. His loss.”

“Indeed.”

Jim eyed him with a sudden frown. “Put those chips down.”

“What?”

The adult grabbed his arm, surprisingly gently, and brought him into the kitchen, pointing to the sink. “Wash those hands. You’re wearing your school uniform and your Uncle Spock and parents are gonna kill me if you get stuff all over it again.”

“But I want—”

“I’ll put you in a big T-shirt. Just clean up and we’ll take off that shirt.”

A few minutes later, back perched on the stool munching chips and pretzels, Vanik said to Jim, “You are wise.”

Jim laughed.

“You’ll need more decorations for the party though,” Vanik said, returning to the reason he had come.

“Party?” Jim paused with a beer bottle halfway to his mouth.

“Halloween. If you will recall you had one the last two years. It will, admittedly, be difficult to top last years.”

“Uh.”

“What does uh mean?”

“I hate to break it to you, kid, but we’re not having a Halloween party this year.”

“You…are not?” Vanik scrunched up his face.

“Nope. Parties are a lot of work and expense, Vanik. Your uncle and I decided not to have it this year.”

Disappointment washed over him, but with a heavy sigh, he popped another chip in his mouth. “Got any strawberry milk?”

Jim rolled his eyes and went into the fridge for a small bottle that he handed to Vanik. They kept the milk especially for him and Vanik loved that.

“What are the plans for Halloween then?”

“Scary movies, snacks, and cuddling on the couch.”

The door to the apartment opened then and Vanik’s uncle entered. He stopped short on seeing Vanik, then shook his head and reclosed the door.

“Did we expect you today?” Spock asked.

Vanik watched as he came to Jim and gave him a quick kiss. Spock had definitely changed. Thanks to Vanik, of course.

“No. I came to check on the Halloween plans.”

Spock frowned. “Halloween plans? We are not—”

“I know. Jim told me no party. What snacks are we having?”

“What?”

Vanik took a sip of his milk. “I’ll skip the cuddling. I can sit on a chair instead of the couch.”

Spock glanced at Jim, who smiled serenely. He turned away then, pinching the bridge of his nose. “I am getting a headache.”

Vanik looked to Jim. “Snacks?”

Jim laughed. “We have time to think about it.:

He nodded satisfied and realized, mournfully, between he and Jim, the chips and pretzels were gone. He sighed regretfully and slipped off the stool.

:”It is fortunate that Mother, Father and I now live in the same apartment building as you,” Vanik declared as he made his way to the door.

“Yes it is,” Jim agreed, amiably.

Jim was a good egg, Vanik thought. And he said his goodbyes, retrieved his school uniform shirt, and left.

For now, of course.

Flash Fic, September 19, 2022

Spock had gotten home only a short time ago and he was expecting Jim soon so he knew he didn’t have a long time to contact his father. But it was best he get it over with than have Sarek do something stupid like show up at Spock’s apartment.

“Live long and Prosper Father.”

Sarek managed to look grumpy without his expression changing. He was good at that.

“The same for you, Spock. You received my message.”

“I did.”

“I sent it nearly twenty-four hours ago, it seems you did not find it terribly important.”

Spark inclined his head, ignoring the rebuke. Instead he said, “It is not.”

Sarek arched a brow. “Your bond to a Vulcan female is not important?”

“Former bond, Father.”

“You had your bond dissolved?”

“Negative, T’Pring did.” Spock paused and steepled his fingers.

Sarek’s eyes narrowed. “Why would she do that?”

Spock gave a slight shrug. “She felt that my attentions were on someone else. And in fact, she was correct.”

“James Kirk. A Human.”

His voice dripped with his version of sarcastic derision. Spock was quite used to it.

“Yes,” Spock admitted.

“That would not matter. There are many Vulcans that take other lovers besides those they are bonded to.” He sniffed.

Spock wasn’t sure how many did and he did not feel like asking Sarek if he happened to be of those.

“She also prefers another. Given that we both do, it made logical sense for her to seek the sever of our bond, which she has done.”

“And when were you going to tell me?”

“When you brought it up,” Spock admitted. “As you have done now.”

Sarek stared silently at him for some time without response. Spock could almost see the wheels turning in his head.

“Your mother has informed me that James Kirk lives with you now.”

“That is correct.”

Sarek nodded. “Very well. Live long and Prosper, Spock.”

And he was gone before Spock could provide any response.

It went better than he expected, but Spock couldn’t deny some measure of anxiety still pooling in his gut. Talking to his father tended to do that for him and no amount of meditation seemed to help.

Spock turned as he heard Jim at the door and a moment later his boyfriend entered their apartment.

Jim smiled at him and came toward him, arms outstretched. It was his typical greeting whenever they saw each other after a short separation. At first Spock had been uncomfortable with such displays, even in private, but now he looked forward to them, even if he would not admit it.

He pulled Jim close, leaning in to smell the vanilla bean shampoo Jim used.

“Oof.” Jim stiffened and eased back a little.

Spock frowned. “What is wrong?”

Jim’s tongue came out to lick his lips. “Well…”

“Well…what?”

Jim sighed and stepped back. His fingers going to the tunic of his cadet’s uniform. “Let me show you.”

Happy Labor Day if you’re in the US.

This is a continuation from Friday’s Flash

As it happened, in the morning, Jim had to go to his classes before Spock, and after a lingering kiss between them, Jim set off.

Spock used that opportunity to contact his mother.

“Spock, what a wonderful surprise.”

“I do hope I am not disturbing you.”

She waved this away. “You can never disturb me.” She smiled. “Your new semester of classes begin  today, don’t they?”

“They do. But later. I wished to inform you I have a roommate.” He paused. “A special one.”

She looked puzzled. “Who?”

“Jim. Jim is here.” He knew he did not have to give her Jim’s full name. She would know. And she had adored Jim when they met on Spock’s home world.

“That’s wonderful! Is he right there with you?”

“He has gone to class.”

“Class?” Her eyes widened. “Is he at Starfleet Academy?”

“He is. A long story which I am certain he will be happy to share with you himself. I just wished to let you know.” Spock felt suddenly rather embarrassed about his enthusiastic call to his mother. His father would be appalled at his lack of control. He straightened. “You are well?”

She smiled. “Yes. And I’m very happy for you. I know how much you meant to each other in the brief time you had together on Vulcan. I’m sure your relationship will only strengthen now.”

It was Spock who had pursued Jim when he’d seen him on Vulcan in a teashop that catered to Vulcan visitors rather than Vulcans. Spock had seen Jim go inside with a blonde woman he had suspected was Jim’s mother. It had turned out he was wrong about that, it had been his aunt, his mother’s sister.

Spock had entered the shop and told Jim they were going to spend the night together.

Once more Spock felt embarrassed, but he could not feel so bad as it had worked, and now Jim was here in San Francisco.

“I must go now to prepare for my day, Mother. We will speak again.”

“Of course. Love you!”

And she was gone from his screen.

Spock let out a long breath and turned to prepare for his day.

Here’s the last one for Missions Gone Wrong

Photo by Felix Mittermeier on Pexels.com

“I did say we shouldn’t respond to the distress signal.”

A muscle in Spock’s jaw jumped. “Our orders—”

“To hell with those orders. Look where it’s gotten us.”

Spock nodded. “You are tied to a tree while I await the bride chosen for me.”

“The Bride of Frankenstein.”

“Are you calling me Frankenstein, Captain?”

Jim frowned. “No, I’m saying—

“If she is my bride and she is the Bride of Frankenstein, then it stands to reason—”

“You know what? Forget it. No doubt she’ll be dead soon because you’ll bore her to death.”

Spock looked affronted. “That was quite unkind.”

“Well you know I get grumpy when I’m tied to a tree to be the sacrifice at my husband’s wedding to someone else. Imagine.”

Spock arched a brow. “While our current situation is challenging, including insults in our interactions are beneath you.”

“You’re going to be required to have public sex with her while they roast me alive!”

“Yes, that is what we face.”

Jim sighed and closed his eyes. “I don’t know how you can be so calm about my impending death.”

“I am hardly calm.”

“I’d hate to see you excited. Well, I’ve seen you excited. I mean, agitated.”

Spock actually rolled his eyes at him and Jim swore if he had his hands free he would be punching  Spock in the nose. But just then he heard sounds of the natives returning.

“Great. You may as well say your I love you and goodbye now, Spock.”

“I do love you, but this is not goodbye.”

“Spock—”

And suddenly just as he spotted Spock’s garishly decorated “bride” he felt his particles break up and reappeared on a transporter pad on the Enterprise.

Spock stood stoically beside him. “Good work, Mister Scott.”

“I just used the coordinates you transmitted, Commander.”

“Wait,” Jim exclaimed. “You had a way to get us out of there and you let me worry and freak out?”

“You seemed to be enjoying yourself, Captain.”

Enjoying myself? Tied up?!”

Spock shrugged. “There have been times when—”

“Shut up.”

“Captain, you have ropes around you,” Scotty pointed out.

“Spock, get these off me. Spock!”
