Jim had kind of had enough, honestly. He hadn’t really even wanted to go to the bar that night, but Bones and Christine had asked and Jim had felt kind of obligated because they’d done plenty of things he’d wanted to do, but he was tired and feeling rather low.

He’d studied most of the evening in the library after being shot down by his crush when he’d asked about a date. And sure, he’d sort of expected it, given who he had a thing for, but still, it was a bitter disappointment.

Jim touched the sleeve of Christine’s blouse to get their attention.

“Hey guys, I think I’m going to head home.”

“What?” Bones exclaimed. “It’s early. Especially for you.”

“I know. I’m not feeling it tonight and I just want to hit the hay.”

Bones smirked at Christine. “He’s still talking like he’s in Iowa.”

“You want us to go with you, Jim?” she asked.

“No, no. I’ll take the bus. There’s a bus stop just outside this bar. I’d walk but it’s raining.”

“Let us know you make it safe,” Christine called after him.

“She’s worse than you,” Jim told Bones.

He walked outside and stood under the awning for a moment as he considered the rain. It was light, really, nothing too heavy. And he considered walking after all, but he figured the bus would probably be arriving at any time, so he’d not have long to wait.

Shrugging, he stepped over to the bus stop. There were two other guys standing there, coats pulled tight around them, wearing caps of some kind. Looking sort of slinky and that they were up to something.

Jim did his best to ignore them.

“Hey pretty boy, got any money?”

Jim didn’t respond.

“Hey, dumbass, we’re talking to you.”

“I don’t have any money.”

“Bullshit, dweeb. We saw you coming from that bar. You got money for drinks. Give us all you got or we’ll cut you.”

Jim sighed. This was just the sort of end to a crappy day he would expect. “I have no money, but I do have a phaser, which I will use, if you don’t back off and leave me alone.”

“A phaser?” One of them laughed. “What are you one of those Starfleet idiots?”

They were too busy laughing at nothing, Jim guessed, to notice the approach of someone else. But Jim noticed. And Jim was very, very surprised as to who it was.

“Indeed, as am I,” Spock said from behind them.

Professor Spock.

“What?” The other one turned quickly, but it wasn’t quick enough, because Spock pinched his neck and dropped him to the ground.

Jim used the distraction to slug the other one in his stomach, causing him to double over.

“My car is over there,” Spock said, pointing down the road. “Care for a ride?”

Jim grinned. “Sure thing.”

He followed Spock to the car.

“Did you really have a phaser?” Spock asked after they’d gotten in and he pulled his hover car away.

“Nope. Was totally bluffing.”

Spock shook his head.

“Uh, not that I’m ungrateful. But didn’t you say no to the bar?”

“I did. I had a change of heart.” Spock glanced at him. “But I am glad I didn’t have to go into the bar, just the same. Your place or mine, Cadet?”

“Yours.”

He texted Bones.

“I’m all right, but won’t be home. C U tomorrow.”

Spirk Day 2020

I know it’s Spirk day and I should write something absolutely epic but I just don’t have it in me to do so right now. I’m pretty drained. I’m sorry.

“Spock’s going to be fine, Jim.”

“Define fine.”

Bones rolled his eyes. “He’s going to recover. He’s asking for you.”

That surprised Jim a bit. Well. Spock got injured saving Jim, again, but…maybe Spock planned to chew Jim out. Sure.

He started toward the medbay area where Spock was being treated. Bones put his hand on Jim’s shoulder.

“Uhura’s in there right now. Give it a few minutes.”

“Oh.” Jim nodded. He was aware that Spock and Uhura had broken up, but he was also aware that they were trying to reconcile. Or Jim thought they were. Probably Spock being injured would push them toward it.

He thought about leaving altogether, but Spock was his friend and first officer, and he got severely injured saving Jim, so he stuck around, having a cup of coffee with Bones.

Eventually, he spotted Uhura leaving. She was wiping at her face, and Jim wasn’t sure what that meant. Probably just upset Spock got hurt saving their captain. Whatever.

He said goodbye to Bones and went over to Spock’s biobed.

Spock had his eyes closed and Jim was about to turn around and leave after all.

“Jim,” Spock whispered.

He turned and saw Spock watching him, dark eyes as mysterious as ever.

“You are well?”

Jim huffed a laugh as he moved closer. “Me? I’m great. Nothing wrong with me. Thanks to you. And yeah, thank you. You shouldn’t have—”

“I had to.”

Jim smiled crookedly, waiting for Spock to speak of his duty as first officer to watch out for the captain’s life, as per usual.

But when Spock didn’t, Jim prompted, “Your duty to protect the captain, right?”

Spock shook his head. “My duty is important, yes, but that is not why I stepped in to save your life.” Spock paused. “This time and all the others, as well. Despite what I said.”

Jim frowned. “Then…wait. I don’t understand.”

Spock held out his hand toward Jim and Jim took it. “Jim. It is because…”

He smiled then. Understanding. “Because I am your friend.”

The words from when Jim died, for the reason Jim saved Spock from the volcano, echoed in his memories.

Once again, Spock indicated the negative.

“What then?”

“You always shall be my friend. But because I want you to be more than my friend.”

Jim’s eyes widened as it dawned on him what Spock meant.

“Uhura—”

“We are not together and will not be. I am in love with someone else.” Spock squeezed Jim’s hand that he held. “This simple feeling between us was beyond my comprehension before. It is…everything now.”

“Spock.” He leaned down then and captured Spock’s lips for the first in what he hoped would be a life time of kisses.

Happy Spirk Day 2020

Flash Fic, September 14, 2020

“Oh, God, I’m dying.”

Jim doubled over, clutching his stomach.

“I’ve been poisoned.”

He dropped down to one knee, one hand grasping on the porcelain bowl.

In the other room he heard Spock’s voice.

“Nyota, I believe we should contact medical help immediately.”

“Spock, he’s not actually dying.”

“Yes, I am,” Jim yelled.

“It’s hyperbole, Spock. You know what that is. Jim’s just had too much to drink.”

A long pause.

“Kirk, how much did you have to drink?” she yelled into the bathroom.

“Hardly any and it was poisoned.”

He heaved and his stomach contents went into the bowl.

“Nyota…”

“Spock, he’s fine. Go see for yourself if you don’t believe me.”

Jim heaved again as he heard hurried footsteps.

“Jim, do I need to rush you to the hospital?”

Jim held up a finger and then emptied his stomach again.

“Jim?”

He leaned back, sitting on the floor and hugging the toilet.

“I’m okay, I guess.”

“If you require medical attention…

Jim sighed. “I probably don’t. You can go back to the other room. Or leave or whatever you want.”

There was a long pause.

“I do not want to leave. And I want to see you are returned to your dorm safely.” Another pause. “Then it was the alcohol consumption that caused this?”

Jim nodded. “Dad’s birthday. Stupid.”

“Do you think you are able to stand and be escorted home?”

He thought about it for a second and then nodded. “Yeah, with help.”

Spock reached down and lifted him to his feet effortlessly. Jim swayed a little and steadied himself by having a death grip on Spock’s arm.

For a moment he met Spock’s gaze, but then he quickly looked away, afraid of the judgment he might see there.

They left the bar bathroom and it was Spock who made their goodbyes. Jim did notice he spoke low to Uhura, who had rolled her eyes, but then pushed Spock in Jim’s direction.

“I’m sorry to interrupt your evening.” Jim said, miserably.

“You did not.”

Jim knew he had, of course, but he fell silent and allowed Spock to almost carry him to his dorm. He was just grateful Bones had gone out with a lady friend for the night so he wouldn’t have to hear the doc tell him what a fool he was in front of Spock.

Spock opened the door for him and helped him inside.

“Do you need…”

Spock never got to finish because Jim made a break for the bathroom, dropping once more to his knees and heaving his guts.

He stayed in there for a while, even after he was done, hoping Spock would just leave and save him the embarrassment.

To Jim’s surprise when he came out, Spock was sitting at Jim’s small table, having a cup of tea.

“Uh.”

“You still look quite pale. Can you manage tea? I made you a cup.”

“Maybe.”

Spock gestured for Jim to sit at the other little chair. He did and wrapped his hands around the hot cup.

“And here I was trying to impress you,” Jim muttered. “Some dummy huh?”

Spock stared at him. “You were trying to impress me?”

“Uh-huh.” Jim laughed mirthlessly.

“Jim, I do not go to bars.”

“Well, okay, but…” Jim scrunched his face up, confused. “So why did you…”

Spock gave the barest hint of a smile. “Because I wished to spend time with you, Jim.”

“Oh.” Jim blinked, then smiled. “Oh.”

Flash Fic, September 11, 2020

In 2018 I wrote a song fic, How Am I Supposed to Live Without You? A Michael Bolton song but I preferred the Laura Branigan version.

I even got art for it.

This is a sequel to that short story.

“How long’s it been?”

Jim looked up from the test he was studying for. “I don’t know. Thirty minutes?”

“No, brainless. Since, you started seeing my teacher.”

Jim blushed. “I’m not seeing him. We just, we’ve gone for tea and coffee a few times.”

“Ten times.”

“That’s a few.”

Bones snorted and flung himself dramatically on to his back on his dorm room bunk.

“Sometimes we have muffins and cookies with it.”

“You’ve also been to dinner with him.”

“Just twice.”

“Three times. And don’t you have a date tonight?”

Jim sighed. “It’s not a date, Bones.”

“Going to the movies, just the two of you. You don’t like him?”

“I like him.”

“Don’t tell me you’re still mooning over Tommy?”

“I’m not.” Jim scowled. “I’m just…”

“If Spock isn’t who you want, Jim, you probably shouldn’t string him along. Isn’t he the one who keeps inviting you?”

“Yeah but…”

There was a knock at the door. Jim looked at Bones.

“That’s him. I gotta go.”

“Think about what I said.”

“Bones”. Jim shook his head.

He opened the door and smiled. “Hi. Let me just grab my coat.”

“Your scarf too. The wind is picking up and it will be quite cold when the movie is over.”

“Okay.”

Jim turned to get his scarf off the coatrack and saw that Bones was sitting up staring at Spock.

“Good evening, Doctor McCoy.”

“Hello Spock.”

Jim bit his lip. “Want to-want to come with us?”

He was aware that Spock turned his head to stare him. He felt his cheeks warm.

Bones looked like he was biting the inside of his cheek. “No, that’s quite all right. Go on.”

They went out into the night.

Jim wrapped in his fleece coat and scarf, trying not to look in Spock’s direction. They made it out of the area where the dorms were before Spock stopped him.

“Jim, I believe we should forgo the planned movie to talk.”

Which absolutely filled Jim with dread. But he nodded.

“Where?”

Jim assumed he’d pick somewhere close and public and quiet. Where a quick exit could be made.

“My apartment is not too far.”

Well. That was a surprise and Jim wasn’t sure what to make of that, but he nodded and followed Spock there.

They hadn’t ever gone there. Or Jim hadn’t. So he didn’t know where he was going but the building was familiar.

Once inside, and in an apartment on the second floor, Spock turned to Jim.

“Jim, I am…”

“You’re leaving, right?”

“What?”

“Going back to Vulcan. Isn’t that it?”

Spock stared at him. “No.”

Jim closed his eyes and then opened them again. “What?”

“Jim, I have spent these many weeks asking you on dates—”

“Dates.”

“Trying to woo you and—”

“Woo me.”

“With your inviting along McCoy I can only surmise that you are not interested in a romantic pairing and that is your choice, and while, I am, admittedly disappointed, I wish to make it clear that a friendship is an acceptable alter…mm.”

Jim flung himself into Spock’s arms and kissed him.

Spock kissed right back.

And then, when they came up for air, Spock gazed into Jim’s eyes.

“Then I surmise you are interested. I do not understand.”

“Before, I had this guy, and I was crazy about him. So in love.”

“That was why you were crying on the ground when I met you.”

“Yeah. I never told him I loved him, and he wanted someone else anyway and he moved away. I thought …if I started to become too involved with you, that you would leave too, that you only wanted to be friends, just like him, and I didn’t want to-I was afraid for that to happen. If I allowed myself to think we were something more than friends, well, and you went to Vulcan or…”

“I am not going anywhere, Jim.” Spock pushed him against the nearest wall and kissed him again. “And I definitely want to be more than friends.”

Jim grinned. “Me too.”

“About the movie.”

Jim grabbed the collar of Spock’s sweater and drew him close. “What movie?”

Flash Fic, September 09, 2020

“Are you nervous?” Vanik asked Jim as Spock’s significant other stood in front of a full length mirror dressed in his red cadet’s uniform.

Jim glanced down at him. “Nervous?”

“About the first day.”

Jim smiled. “It’s not really the first day. I had summer courses.”

“You did, but this is the first day of the regular semester and I thought…you might be.”

“Course not. What’s there to be nervous about?” He turned away from the mirror. Then he looked down at Vanik again. For a moment he said nothing, then the smile returned to his face, but this one was a little different. Very gentle and affectionate, rather than amused.

To Vanik’s surprise, Jim suddenly crouched down on his haunches until he was closer to Vanik’s own height.

“A little nervous about your first day at the new school, huh?”

Vanik swallowed heavily and nodded.

“You know you’re really smart, so that’s not it. Don’t think you’ll make any friends?”

“Well.” Vanik looked down toward his feet. “I am different than everyone else. They’ll all be fully human.”

“Now, I doubt that. A lot of families around here are in Starfleet or the Federation and come from everywhere. And you are different than anyone else. I’m different too.”

Vanik raised his gaze. “You are?”

“Sure. Everyone is unique. There’s not one of us that’s exactly the same and how great is that? You’re going to do fine, Vanik. You’ll see. And if you have any issues with anyone, you tell me, and I’ll come kick their as…butts.”

Vanik returned Jim’s smile. “They are kids. You can’t kick their butts, Jim.”

“Right.” Jim grinned. “Their parents then.”

“Okay. And if you have any trouble at the Academy I will kick their butts.”

“Deal.” Jim held out his palm and Vanik slapped it.

****

“Jim!”

Vanik’s uncle, Spock, watched as his nephew ran to Jim when they arrived to pick Vanik up from school as Sybok and Anoria had asked them to.

“Hey, kid. How’d it go?”

“It went great! You were right.”

“Right?” Spock asked with a questioning brow.

“There were lots of other students who were not fully human. Some weren’t even a tiny bit!”

“See?” Jim ruffled Vanik’s hair. “Who’s up for ice cream?”

“Me!”

Jim glanced at Spock. “Or you know, frozen non-dairy yogurt or whatever.”

Spock took Jim’s arm, showing his own amusement, though not to the extent his nephew did, and they walked away from Vanik’s school together.

Flash Fic, September 07, 202

“If you’ll all please bring up the information I asked you to research for today’s lesson on quadrotriticale, we can get started.”

The blue-eyed sandy haired human professor standing in front of the class was definitely new, Spock realized.

And absurdly attractive.

The entire class was staring at him and not at all the coursework.

Spock among them.

He glanced at the name written on the board in old-fashioned chalk.

James T. Kirk.

“Excuse me!” a student Spock knew was called Pavel Chekov yelled out to get the instructor’s attention.

“Yes?”

“Vhat happened to Professor Lansing? The old guy.”

Kirk shrugged. “He got sick so I’m taking over this class for the semester. Problems?”

“No, no.”

“Good, then we can get started.”

Kirk turned his back on the class to start some sort of slide program. Which seemed to fill the other students with relief as they turned to their PADDs.

Spock did not. His gaze zeroed in on…

Kirk turned around and suddenly narrowed his eyes as he looked toward Spock, who felt himself turn green with embarrassment. He dropped his PADD.

“What’s the matter with you?” Nyota hissed from beside him.

“Nothing,” Spock murmured.

But he could feel her eyes on him, and Spock swore everyone’s eyes were on him. That he had somehow been caught ogling the instructor’s ass.

When the class ended, Spock barely recalled what was said, and he scrambled to get up and out of the class. He made it to the door.

“Cadet Spock.”

Spock froze. He exchanged a look with a smirking Nyota, and he once more felt his cheeks go warm.

He waited until all the others turned away and left before facing Kirk.

“I…”

Kirk was smiling. He walked up to Spock and opened his arms.

“It’s been way too long.”

Spock went into his arms and closed his around Kirk’s. “Indeed. I-I didn’t know you were…”

“I know. It was a surprise.”

Their lips met and Spock murmured against that precious mouth. “It was. A very pleasant one.”

Kirk’s hand move up to come his cheek. “Hey. Were you staring at my ass?”

Flash Fic, September 04, 2020

A while ago, I did a fic where Jim woke up unexpectedly in A Surprise.

I decided for this September it would be fun to do it the other way around.

Who Does Spock Wake Up With? I also changed the tense of the narrative to present.

Something is strange, Spock realizes, the moment he wakes. He is in a bed but not in his bed. And for one long minute as he stares up at a strange ceiling, he cannot figure out why.

He tenses a little when he realizes a heavy, muscular arm is slung across him. He chooses not to immediately move for he is not prepared to wake up his bed partner. Not now anyway.

He goes over what he recalls from the last few hours, and as he lifts his head up slightly from the rumpled pillow cushioning his head, he recognizes the other man in bed with him as Cadet Jim Kirk.

Both the cadet and Spock himself are nude. Spock continues to survey the cadet and notes he wears several sucked bruises along his collarbone. Hickeys as Terrans call them.

Cadet Kirk is lying on his stomach, his round buttocks facing upward and exposed to the elements, or rather the room in which they are, and Spock’s gaze. There appears to be dried semen stains across the plump cheeks and between, on the crease.

Spock knows he is blushing at this and knows they are from him, as are the hickeys.

He doesn’t give himself the time to analyze all the events that led up to this coupling, as he decides it is best if he makes himself scarce from what is obviously Cadet Kirk’s living space.

He eases himself out from under the arm and is pleased when he does so without waking the young sandy haired man.

Spock feels sore all over and rather exhausted and expects they spent a rather vigorous evening together.  He takes the time to locate the sheet lying discarded on the floor and lifts it up and over Cadet Kirk’s nude body.

Spock next seeks out his clothing and finds it by the door of what is clearly an Academy Dormitory. From his perusal, the cadet does not seem to have a roommate. His mind is still a bit fuzzy on how they ended up in this situation, but he suspects once he leaves and has tea and breakfast, it will come to him.

After dressing in his professor’s uniform, he quickly sneaks out of the dorm room, grateful that no one came upon him as he does so.

It is early, Spock realizes, the sun just coming up, and most cadets in the area will be sleeping off whatever partying they’d done the evening before. It had been Friday after all.

His apartment is about a block over from the dorms and so Spock hastily makes his way there.

Once in his apartment, he showers, changes into clean clothing–grateful it is Saturday and he has no classes to instruct–and prepares his breakfast.

As he sits and sips his tea and eats his oats, Spock goes over his memories. He recalls now that he had been talked into going to a bar by another cadet of his acquaintance, Nyota Uhura. They had been…sort of dating…Spock supposes. Clearly they were not now.

He pulls out his communication device and sees he has a few texts from her.

Spock? U ok?

Spock, u better answer!

Before she can show up to his apartment inquiring into matters he is not yet ready to discuss, he quickly sends her a response.

Yes, I am fine. Having breakfast. Talk later.

He hopes this will suffice for now and that she won’t come barging over. She has a tendency to be abrasive at times and that is part of the reason Spock does not see a romantic future with her.

Even before the apparent events of the night before.

It was at this bar that Spock struck up a conversation with Cadet Kirk. And he realizes, it was definitely he who had approached the cadet.

Cadet Kirk had been sitting in a dark corner of the bar by himself drinking a beer and staring at his communication device, his blueberry eyes looking wet.

“Are you unwell?” Spock had asked.

And somehow that question had caused him to sit at the table with Kirk.

The cadet had told him a sad story about a friend, Spock had sympathized, they touched hands, had a couple more drinks, held hands, and then…

Gone to Cadet Kirk’s dorm where they…yes. Quite a lot, they had.

Spock feels himself blush again even though there is no one in his apartment but him, but he remembers it all, thinks a little bit that he was an animal, perhaps taking advantage of Cadet Kirk’s sorrowful state, Spock isn’t sure, but…

A knock startles him out of his reverie.

Spock frowns in irritation, which he allows himself to feel, certain it is Nyota Uhura after all. He thinks of ignoring it and pretending he is not home, but that seems too close to a lie, and Vulcans do not.

He pushes back from his chair and goes to the door of his apartment. He forgets to look through the peephole as he opens it and so is startled into an un-Vulcan-like gasp.

“Cadet Kirk!”

Kirk smiles, which lights up the apartment and the hallway, Spock thinks, and he holds up a paper bag that is clenched in his hands.

“Bagels for breakfast. Cream cheese too. Even vegan.”

Spock stands back and allows him to enter his apartment.

Kirk steps close and kisses him. Spock does not mind. He seizes the top of Kirk’s T-shirt and pulls him close, deepening the kiss.

“Good morning,” Kirk says breathlessly.

Spock kicks the door closed.

“Good morning, Jim.”

Flash Fic, September 02, 2020

And so we begin the month of Starfleet Academy Flashes

“What are you doing anyway?” Bones asked Jim as he poured himself coffee in their Starfleet Academy dorm room.

Jim was lying on his bunk, stomach down, swiping his finger across the PADD he held.

“Looking through the digital announcement boards.”

“For?”

“The advertisements for tutors.”

“Huh? What for? You want some coffee?”

“Yeah pour me some and leave it on the table. Um, you know, curiosity.”

“Jim, you are like the last guy who needs a tutor. What’s going on?”

Jim smiled a little. “Well, uh, I may have heard that a certain Vulcan professor was going to offer his services tutoring physics and I thought…”

“Jim, he’s going to know immediately it’s a scam.”

“I’m not scamming him, Bones.”

Bones sighed. “Okay, but trying to…what…get with him? Probably unsuccessfully.”

“Hey!” Jim got up from the bed and went to fetch the coffee bones gave him. “I’m a catch.”

“Well…”

“I am.”

Bones smirked. “What’s he going to tutor you in? Vulcan sexual practices?”

“I wish. As it happens, I found his post about tutoring so I’m going to see him this afternoon.”

“Bad idea.”

“You suck.” Jim threw a ball at him.

****

Spock looked up from the Kobayashi Maru program he was studying at the approaching footsteps. He was somewhat surprised to see Cadet James Kirk standing in front of him. He’d had Cadet Kirk in a battle simulation class the prior year. Kirk had excelled.

“Cadet.”

“Hi Professor. I saw your advertisement about tutoring.”

Spock leaned back. “I don’t really require a second tutor to assist me. So far only two students have applied, Nyota Uhura and Rupert Smiley. If those are the only two—”

“No,” Cadet Kirk interrupted. “Well, first, of course she did. But what I meant was…I’d like you to tutor me. If you would.”

Spock arched a brow. Leaned back further and studied Cadet Kirk. “You are a brilliant student. You do not need such tutelage.”

Kirk pursed his lips. “All right, maybe, but…” He laughed then. “The truth is, I like you.”

Spock felt warm at these words. Cadet Kirk was very attractive and intelligent and as Spock preferred males…

“Dinner this evening?”

Jim smiled brightly. “You bet.” Then he leaned in close. “Perhaps there’s something you can teach me after all.”

“Certainly how to pick up Vulcans is top of that list,” Spock said with some amusement.

Jim pulled back, eyes wide, but then he laughed. “Touché. Yeah, okay. So maybe I wasn’t exactly smooth here but…”

“You were smooth enough. I will pick you up at seven…cadet.”

“I’ll be ready, Professor.”

Flash Fic, August 31, 2020

Here is my last “Summer” themed August flash. This is an alternate beginning to Star Trek 2009

“So…summer’s just about over.”

Spock eyed the blue-eyed blond haired man he’d spent most of the Earth’s summer months with. Tomorrow, Spock would be returning to San Francisco and his teaching position at Starfleet Academy.

James Kirk.

Just that day they’d lounged in bed at Jim’s farmhouse.

“Yes. Unfortunately, I must depart in the morning.”

“Yeah.” Jim licked his lips. “I know.”

Now Jim wanted to go to this “dive bar” as he called it. Spock recognized several Starfleet Academy recruits. A subject Jim had not wished to discuss with Spock. Something about his father and his mother.

Still it meant he might not see Jim again. Going to a bar their last night together was not his idea of a good time.

He put his hand on Jim’s arm. “I see Captain Pike. I would like to have a word with him. I will be in shortly.”

“Okay, gotcha. Want me to order you something?”

“Tea if they have it.”

Jim smiled and nodded and went inside.

****

Spock was just finishing up speaking with Captain Pike when someone came out from the bar. It was very loud inside.

“There’s a fight going on,” the man said.

Pike frowned. “A fight? What sort of fight?”

“A bunch of Starfleet dudes are beating the crap out of a guy in civilian clothes. I don’t know. He was being friendly to a woman and they went berserk. You may want to go in there if they’re with you. They’re giving that guy a pretty bad time.”

Spock knew Jim was somehow involved.

Pike and Spock rushed inside and sure enough the big brut called Hendorff was pummeling Jim in the face.

Pike whistled loudly and the fight abruptly stopped.

Spock moved forward and pushed Hendorff aside as he let Jim fall onto the pool table.

Pike moved toward Jim. “You all right, son?”

“You can whistle really loud,” Jim said, sounding pretty out of it.

Spock glared at Hendorff and the others. “You will be on report. This is not conduct becoming to a Starfleet cadet. Wait outside.”

They all rushed out.

Spock met the uncertain gaze of Nyota Uhura, who he knew from his recruitment of cadets. Spock helped Jim to straighten from the pool table.

“Do you need medical attention, Jim?”

Blood was pouring from Jim’s nose.

“No. No. I’m all right.”

“Actually, I’ll take care of Jim here, Spock. I’d like to have a few words with him,” Pike said, taking over holding Jim up. “Why don’t you take care of those recruits outside?”

Spock nodded. “Very well.” He squeezed Jim’s arm very gently. “I will be right outside.”

Jim smiled a little, though it was ghastly with the blood. “Okay. I’ll be okay.”

Spock turned to Uhura. ”Nyota, please come with me.”

She followed him outside the bar.

Uhura fidgeted. “That guy…you know him?”

“Yes. We have been engaged in a relationship since our arrival in Riverside.”

She blinked. “Oh.”

“I accompanied him to the bar but was delayed in entry. Will you explain what started the melee?”

“Well. Um. He approached me at the bar and offered to buy me a drink. I guess I thought he was hitting on me or whatever but maybe he was just being friendly. Anyway, those guys thought he was bothering me and even though I told them I could handle your friend, they got all macho and started a fight.”

“I see.”

“Your, uh, your friend kind of encouraged it a little by being sarcastic to them, but they were mostly at fault. I tried to get them to stop but then…”

“Then?” Spock prompted.

“One of them threw Kirk into me and he grasped my body, my breasts, and I got mad and threw him right back into them where they got even more crazy and started beating him.” She winced. “I’m sorry, Spock. I didn’t know he was your boyfriend or anything.”

“I suggest you leave here and be prepared to be on the shuttle to San Francisco first thing in the morning.”

“Will I be on report?”

“No. Though none of the circumstances were ideal, you do not appear to have taken part in the assault of the civilian, James Kirk. I trust you will conform yourself appropriately from now forward.”

“Yes. Yes. I will. Thank you, Spock. And I’m sorry about Kirk.” She hurried off and Spock turned his attention to the offenders.

****

Spock joined Jim in bed much later that night. “You are sure you are all right, Jim?”

“Yeah. Just a bit bruised. Nose hurts. But nothing broken.”

“I am sorry I wasn’t in there to stop it.”

Jim laughed. “It’s okay, Spock. They were looking for a fight. I was just stupid enough to egg them on.”

“What did Captain Pike have to say?” Spock said, as he leaned in to kiss the corner of Jim’s mouth.

“He wants me to enlist in Starfleet.”

Spock drew back, surprised. “And will you?”

Jim’s eyes were sparkling as he smiled. “What do you think?”
