Short Rambles, July 29, 2019

Work’s been absolutely crazy today so I’ve hardly had a breather, but I did manage to finally update Transfer Request. Woooh.

Next up will be The Sight and The Mysterious One. So we’ll see when I can get those up.

The Eighth chapter of I Will Follow You Into the Dark is up on Wednesday and as you know I have begun to post the earlier chapters on AO3. With only chapter 9 and 10 to go after that I anticipate it being done Mid-August.

Going out to dinner for Mom’s 93rd birthday today! I wonder how many of us will make it that far. She has outlived all her siblings and of course her husband.

Sneak Peek of Stranded 3 (coming soon…ish)

“Hey, Mom?” Jim Kirk stood by window next to the back door of the family’s farmhouse.

“Yeah Jim?”

“I’m going to go check on the barn.”

She appeared next to him, arms crossed in front of her chest, wearing an oversized sweater. Jim couldn’t totally blame her. It was cold. Outside anyway. But ever since she got sick a month ago, she got colder easy, even inside in the heat. Jim was sweltering though.

He’d moved back home to help her after her illness. She was doing much better, yeah, but not up to herself yet.

“Something wrong?”

He smiled, reassuringly. “Doubtful. I saw a flash of light or something. Probably just lightening.”

“Lightening?” She frowned. “Didn’t hear any thunder.”

“Too far off, probably. I’ll just be a second.”

“Okay. Should I make a pot of coffee?”

He squeezed her shoulder. “Good idea. Be right back.”

He went to the peg that held his coat and shrugged into it. He pulled up the hood and went out the back door and started for the barn. Rain splattered on him, at an angle, so the hood wasn’t much protection, the drops kept hitting his face.

Jim frowned when he noticed the barn door was ajar. He had definitely closed it earlier, knowing that it was going to rain.

“Hello? Is anyone there?”

It was possible someone broke into the barn to seek shelter. If so, Jim would invite them into the house for food and to dry out.

He pushed open the door.

“Hey? It’s Jim Kirk. Are you in my barn?”

And then he saw a mostly naked long hair man huddled next to his jeep.

“Hi. Do-do you need help?”

“Wait. Wait. Jim. You cannot just drop Pre-Surak Spock into Jim’s world. He won’t know what to do with a Vulcan. And Spock won’t know what to do with Jim. They won’t be able to speak to each other.”

“Well. I guess they’ll find a way, won’t they?”

“Jim.”

“Spock, it’s too late. He’s there. And Jim already knows!”

Christmas in July Flash 2019

“Okay, seriously. What the hell is Christmas in July and why should I care about it?”

Jim Kirk eyed his grumpy-assed friend, Leonard McCoy. They were standing in the entry-way of Starfleet Academy’s cafeteria. The entire eating area had been turned into a themed decorated place, Christmas in July, as it announced on banners everywhere.

Jim shrugged. “It’s a thing, I guess.”

Bones looked at him, his face pinched. “It’s not a thing.”

“It is. They have sales and people watch romantic Christmas movies and—”

“Spare me. You didn’t have anything to do with all this, did you?”

“No, of course not.”

“Surprised they allowed it. There’s Janice. I’m going over there. You coming?”

Jim’s gaze swept over the cafeteria and landed exactly on whom he had been seeking. “No.”

Bones followed his gaze. “You don’t stand a chance, Romeo.”

He sauntered off and Jim drummed up the courage to go past the hanging holly, snowflakes, and tinsel hanging from everywhere.

There in the very far corner, as far away from the decorations as could be, sat the object of Jim’s fascination.

Jim sat across from him. “Good morning.”

Very slowly, the professor’s gaze rose. “Cadet.”

Jim tried to play it cool. “After last night, I thought we’d be on a first name basis.”

“Do keep your voice down.”

“There’s no one near us. You couldn’t have picked a more isolated spot.”

The Vulcan professor, Spock, nodded. “I was attempting to keep myself as far away from the festivities as possible.”

“Don’t like Christmas?”

“I have no particular feelings regarding Christmas.”

“In July perhaps?”

“It is not logical. Earlier they were passing out peppermint mochas.”

Jim smiled. “Did you try one?”

“I did not,” Spock said stiffly. “They were hot.”

“Er yeah. Maybe later I can secure some peppermint ice cream or something.” Jim moistened his lips. “Want to come over and watch romantic Christmas movies with me? There’s one on called A Rocky Mountain Christmas.”

“If I spend the evening with you, we will engage in intimacy.”

His smile widened. “That’s the idea.”

“Cadet.” Spock paused. “I am uncertain we should continue our assignations.”

“But you want to.”

He nodded. “Indeed.”

“There’s no reason to stop. I’m not your student, and really you’re a commander who programs the complicated tests we take, you’re not an ordinary professor.” He stroked his fingers across Spock’s. “There’s nothing ordinary about you.”

Dark eyes met his. “Nor you.”

Jim turned Spock’s palm over and traced the lines there. He kept his gaze on Spock. “Coming over?”

“I will be there.” Spock switched his gaze back to the decorated cafeteria. “I believe you have a class.”

Jim chuckled. “I do.”

“Go out the south door. You will avoid Cadet Rimley who is waiting by the North door with mistletoe for you.”

Jim squeezed Spock’s hand before releasing it. “Will do. See you tonight.”

“Indeed.”

Jim was aware of Spock’s gaze on him as he brushed past hanging ornaments and packages, and when he made it to the south exit, he turned back to see Rimley looking pissed. Jim laughed again and went to class.

A merry Christmas in July indeed.

Was Asked to Add this. Does look good!

More Ramblings, July 23, 2019

I spent yesterday getting the next chapter of I Will Follow You Into the Dark ready for posting on Wednesday. Not sure how many more chapters there will be, but I think just a few. I am up to 7 so I am thinking maybe 10. Then it will get posted to AO3.

This week’s flash is a Pinto one (one of you has already read it) related to The Thought of You is Consuming Me.

Next up is the next chapter of Nine Lives. I’ll be working on that. When last we saw the boys, Jim had punched Stonn.

Then probably my Pinto story, Orchestral Maneuvers.

I’m hoping to get started on my September flashes soon too.

This coming weekend is my mother’s 93rd birthday. We are doing a barbecue on Sunday and going out to a restaurant on Monday. Saturday, we are helping M’s cousin move. Ugh. So that’s a full weekend for sure.

Tonight we are going to see the super ridiculous looking, Stuber. Not my choice. But yeah.

And that’s about it!

Weekend Ramble July 20, 2019

Hello friends

I stalled a bit on All I Ever Wanted because of getting Our So-Called Life started again, but I still intend to get the last two chapters of this fic done this week. It’ll be good to have another story finish.

Once that is completed, I will be going back to Nine Lives and then Transfer Request. I don’t think I will be completing those, just updating them.

I don’t really remember but I thought last year at this time the coordinator who does the OMS challenge got in touch with people who do it or were interested or posted something about it in July and so far I haven’t heard anything about this year. So I wonder if that means it’s a no go or if I am mis-remembering! HA. If it is a go, I will probably put something together for the November posting.

Today isn’t supposed to be too hot here. I know it’s horrible right now in other parts of the country. Only 81 today. But then getting up into the 90s the rest of the week.

We get a free lunch today at the local seafood restaurant. I am excited! Because we are on their emailing list. So that’s something we are doing today. The rest of the weekend is just chill.

Hope you have a good weekend, time, etc, with whatever you are doing.

And stay cool

Cadet Kirk impresses Professor Spock

“You wanted to see me, Professor?”

Spock looked up from his laptop into the startling blue eyes of Cadet James Kirk.  “Yes, Cadet. Thank you for being punctual.”

Kirk nodded.

“The hypothesis you turned in.”

The cadet frowned. “What’s wrong with it?”

“Not a thing,” Spock said honestly. “I was unexpectedly impressed.”

Kirk blinked. “Sir?”

“Your intelligence is remarkable. I found myself fascinated by your findings. I could find nothing at all to suggest they weren’t exacting and frankly, spot on.”

The hint of a smile played at Kirk’s mouth. “Thank you, Professor.”

“I assure you the praise is warranted.” He paused. “I was surprised.”

“Surprised,” Kirk repeated. “Uh. Why?”

Spock thought about it. “It’s been my experience that someone with your extraordinary looks is seldom matched by an extraordinary mind.”

The slow blink happened again and this time the hint of smile broadened to a full one. “Did you just say I had extraordinary looks?”

Spock felt his face flush. “Well…”

“You did. Wow.”

He cleared his throat. “Anyway, I just wished to advise you that I haven’t ever seen such a well-thought out hypothesis since I began teaching here.”

“Thank you again, Professor.”

“Dismissed.”

Kirk began to turn away, then he turned back. “It’s a shame I’m your student.”

“How so?”

Kirk shrugged and took a step forward. “I’d ask you out otherwise.”

“Indeed, that is not possible as you are, in fact, my student.”

The hinted smiled was back. “But only until the end of the semester, which is, by my calculations, over in twelve days.”

Spock found his gaze straying to the calendar, though he certainly knew the date and how many days were left before the summer break.

“True. However, I will be returning to Vulcan for the duration of the break.”

“Oh.” Kirk nodded, smile slipping. “That’s too bad. Okay. See you.” He turned away again.

Spock knew he should keep his mouth shut, but instead he called out, “Cadet?”

He turned back.

“You will not be my student when I return here after the break.”

Now the smile was a grin. “That’s right. Yes. Yes. Okay then. Good to know.” He saluted then, oddly, but then Kirk was unusual.

It was on the tip of his tongue to mention that he knew Kirk was scheduled to take the Kobayashi Maru for the third time tomorrow, but of course, Kirk knew that himself, and Spock saw no real reason to continue the conversation, therefore, this time, he let Kirk leave.

Some Announcements

In case you missed it, I have officially announced on AO3 that I am also the author “Jesse4Love” on there. At the time I created the account, I will confess here, I used it to kudo my own fics, because I didn’t think I was getting enough love at the time. Subsequently, I decided to use the account to write stories I might not write on there as IvanW, but since then, I have decided to continue a story I had abandoned some months back.

Here are the links

Finished story: Life as We Know It.

In progress story, Our So Called Life. Jim and Spock meet as children. Eveningstar, as she will no doubt discover, read it when it was listed as my incognito name.

The other is, that despite my wishiwashness, I am going to continue the blog, at least for now, beyond September 1. So you can expect flashes for 09/06, 09/13, 09/20. and 09/27 for that month. I am going to attempt to write fics for songs. Meaning the flash will somehow fit with a song. I already have one in mind, but if you want to suggest something, I am open to hearing.

And I think that’s everything. Expect a flash tomorrow, of course.
