Flash Fic Friday March 24, 2017

Prompt today is the same for both me and Kris. Write a fic containing this line:

“Will you have sex with me?” This is mine.

Captain_kirk_2

spock-professor

“Will you have sex with me?”

Spock looked up from his PADD. He was seated on a bench in the Academy atrium trying to concentrate on his lesson plan. And failing even before the extraordinary cadet with the bluest eyes he had ever seen approached him.

The cadet was tall, not quite as tall as Spock, but close, with golden hair to go with those bluest of eyes. The cadet was very good looking by Terran standards or Vulcan standards for that matter. In fact, Spock believed he would be hard pressed to find an alien race that did not appreciate the aesthetic appeal of this cadet.

“Hello.” The cadet smiled widely. “I really am sorry to bother you and I know my question is really bold. But see my friends claim that I could get absolutely anyone to have sex with me and I am telling them it’s absolute rubbish. I promise after you say no I’ll never bother you again. So. Will you have sex with me?” he asked again.

“Cadet Kirk, correct?”

His smile faltered for a moment before brightening again. “Yeah, that’s right.”

Spock nodded. “Yes, I will have sex with you.”

“Wh-what?”

Spock arched a brow. “The answer to your query is, in fact, yes.”

Kirk’s jaw dropped. “But-but you’re an instructor and a-a commander and a-a Vulcan.”

“I am, indeed, all three of those things, although currently I am on leave from active instruction.” Spock rose and stuffed his PADD into his book bag. “My apartment is close by.”

“We’re really going to have sex?” Kirk asked, his blue eyes wide.

Spock hesitated, suddenly uncertain. “Or did you only ask me, specifically, to provide sport for yourself and your friends, not actually having any true desire to engage in sexual activity?”

Kirk was staring at him. “No. I mean, no. I…” His tongue came out to trace his lips. “I’d, um, I’d like to, uh, to have sex with you.”

Spock nodded. “Then we may proceed to my apartment.”

Kirk adjusted his own book bag on his shoulder. His skin was flushed red to match his cadet uniform. “Okay.”

Spock turned to walk down the pathway that would lead to the street and then about half a block to his apartment building. He trusted Cadet Kirk to follow him and sure enough Kirk trailed just a bit behind him as he walked.

The truth was this was highly unusual and perhaps even illogical behavior for him. But after his recent communication from Vulcan regarding the breaking of his bond by T’Pring, with whom he’d been connected since he was seven, Spock was feeling strangely bereft. He had no particular fondness for T’Pring, but she had expressed her opinion that Spock was entirely lacking. Given his recent failed attempt at a relationship with Nyota, Spock had begun to wonder if perhaps it really was him.

So perhaps his agreement to engage in copulation with Kirk was impulsive, but Spock intended to go through with it.

He opened the doors to the building and held them aside for Kirk to pass through. Kirk gave him a rather tentative smile and then  walked through the doors. Spock’s gaze lowered to Kirk’s ass.

Kirk looked over his shoulder. “Are you checking me out?”

“Yes.”

He laughed at that. “You’re certainly not subtle.”

Spock held the lift doors open for Kirk to go in. “What would be the point? And besides, it is you who approached me.”

“Yeah, yeah, I did.” Kirk leaned against the wall of the lift. “I didn’t think you’d agree though.”

The lift doors opened onto the corridor containing his apartment. “Having second thoughts?”

“No.”

They stopped at Spock’s apartment and he provided his access to open the door. “After you, Cadet.”

Kirk went inside. “Since we’re about to fuck, you probably ought to call me Jim.”

“Indeed…Jim.”

“Have you-have you ever done this?”

“Had sex?”

“Well, yeah. I mean I’ve heard Vulcans aren’t really very casual about these  sorts of things.”

“We are not,” Spock acknowledged. “The bedroom is that way.” He pointed.

Kirk bit his lip and nodded.

“You have done this before yourself, correct?”

“Well. Um. Yeah. I mean, I’ve had sex. With, you know, girls. And I’ve done blow jobs with guys.”

“But no actual intercourse?”

“No,” Kirk admitted. “Wanted to, though. You have lube?”

“Vulcans secrete natural lubrication for the act of coitus.”

Kirk smiled a little. “That’s handy, isn’t it?”

He sort of shrugged and then headed for the bedroom, shedding his cadet’s jacket and undershirt while he went. Spock could appreciate the efficiency of that.

He had chosen a rather large bed when he’d rent this apartment and at the moment, imagining Kirk nude in his bed was a very arousing thing.

Kirk sat on the edge of it and toed off his boots. Though Spock knew he should be removing his own clothing, he desired to watch Kirk removing his, for every movement from the young cadet was highly erotic to Spock.

Especially each time that tongue stuck out.

Kirk laid on his back as his hands went to the fastenings of his trousers. Spock’s penis filled and rose against his regulation briefs in anticipation. The slow sound of Kirk’s zipper being lowered increased his heart rate by several beats.

As Kirk shimmied out of his trousers, his tongue poked out between his lips and Spock could not stand it one minute more. He knelt on the edge of the bed, leaned down and sucked Kirk’s tongue into his mouth, drawing out a needy moan.

When Kirk gasped for air against him, his blown pupils swallowing that cornflower blue, Spock allowed him the chance to breathe. He stared intently at Spock.

“God, we’re really going to do this, aren’t we?”

Spock stroked his fingers along Kirk’s left cheek. “Affirmative.”

“Wow.”

“Jim.” Spock gazed down at that incredible smile. “Will you have sex with me?”

“Oh yeah.”

Mid-Week Rambles, March 23 Edition

Tomorrow I will be posting a flash fic that I am pretty sure will eventually be included in a longer fic. I confess that I chose the prompt for both myself and my friend Kris, who can be found here, because I wanted to write about this. When I say longer, I am actually thinking maybe a one shot that is several thousand words (not like tens of thousands mind you) and I will likely post it all at once instead of in bits, but we shall see.

Here is a hint of who will be featured in the flash fic.

Cadet

I found a way to further distract myself by games. Most of you who regularly read me here know I was playing a game called Fishdom. I had to give that up because I was spending far too much time and money on it. I deleted the app from my phone. But on my computer I play a world-building game called Elevenar, which I love (and yes I spend money on it too). I love it much more than Fishdom and so since I felt something had to go, I chose Fishdom. But then yesterday while I was off, I discovered I could purchase and download one of my all-time favorite Final Fantasy games to play on my computer. This would be Finally Fantasy 4.

For those curious here is the order of my favorite Final Fantasy games, they are:

Final Fantasy 8

Final Fantasy 4

Final Fantasy 10

Final Fantasy 7

There you have it! HA.

Anyway, with Final Fantasy 4 at least it was a one time purchase and I don’t have to keep adding money to play. I got it all loaded and ready last night right before bed but then I had to hit the hay as it were so I am anxious to play tonight.

All this, will, of course, delay updating fan fiction stories.

I have been told my new glasses are ready at my eye doctor so I will likely pick them up on the way home tonight. They are supposed to be particular good with computers and since I live my life on them both at work and at home I decided to give them a try. Not cheap though but at least my insurance paid for part of it.

Having a BBQ on Saturday afternoon which means socializing, alas. Food will be good though.

That’s the happenings for now.

March 17 Flash Fic Friday

Today’s Prompt: A New Crew Member and a Show of Possessiveness.

The captain smiled vaguely at Spock as they made their way down the corridor toward the shuttle bay. They were expecting a group of new crew members who were assigned to the Enterprise as replacements for some of the crew they’d lost due to the incidents involving Altamid several months ago. There had been a few transfers as well. After months waiting for the new ship to be built, the Enterprise would finally be leaving Yorktown in two weeks.

Spock had no specific objection to Yorktown, but Jim was restless and anxious to be on the Enterprise and in space once more. When Jim was anxious, so was Spock.

“The shuttle is disembarking now, Captain,” an Ensign declared as they entered the bay.

“Thank you, Ensign,” Jim replied.

The new crew members began walking off the ramp and toward Spock and the captain. He noticed Jim was tense around the shoulders and wondered about it but there was no time to query him about it now.

And then he saw her. Carol Marcus. She wore the newer style of the science blue uniform dress, her blond hair was longer than it had been before, and she had a bright smile on her face.  Spock clenched his fists.

She headed straight for the captain, too, bypassing all the other checkpoints the rest of the new crewmembers were required to do before reaching them.

“Jim!” she exclaimed, embracing the captain. “It’s so wonderful to see you again.”

“Hello, Carol,” Jim replied with an easy smile. “Welcome back to the crew.”

“I’m thrilled to be here.” She turned her gaze to Spock, the warmth she had for Jim, fading instantly. “Commander. I wasn’t sure you’d be here.”

“Oh?”

“There were rumors you were leaving Starfleet.”

“Obviously false,” Spock replied as he carefully moved between her and his captain. “I remain the first officer of the Enterprise as well as Captain Kirk’s husband.”

Carol’s eyes widened in shock, her mouth falling open. “Husband?”

Jim cleared his throat. “Yes. It’s very recent.”

“Well.” She shifted uncomfortably. ”Congratulations to you both.”

“The sentiment is appreciated,” Spock replied. “Please report to Ensign Patterson. He’ll have your quarters assignment.”

She smiled awkwardly and moved past them to where Ensign Patterson waited. Jim said nothing but he did raise both eyebrows at Spock, who pretended not to notice.

Much later, they returned to their temporary living arrangement on Yorktown. As soon as they were completely alone, Spock turned to Jim.

“Did you deliberately keep Carol Marcus’ return to the Enterprise from me?”

Jim sort of shrugged as he began to pull off his uniform shirt. “Maybe a little. You get a little weird about her.”

“I do not.”

Jim smiled. “Yeah, you do. You have since the beginning. And it’s bound to be worse now that you know we slept together.”

Spock bristled. “She likely thought you would again.”

“I doubt that. And don’t you dare get all uppity about that. You used to sleep with Uhura and she’s still a member of my crew.”

“That is different.”

His husband rolled his eyes as he tossed his shirt in the hamper. His fingers went to the waistband of his trousers. “No, it’s not. This is just jealousy.”

“Have I reason to be jealous?”

Jim removed his pants.  “No. I only have eyes for you, honey. And every other part of me.”

Spock relaxed. Besides it was difficult to maintain his ire when Jim was stripping naked in front of him. Of course, Spock knew he was doing it deliberately, and still he allowed it to have the desired effect. A naked Jim was something Spock found impossible to resist.

“I still think she thought she would have you again,” Spock declared with a haughty sniff.

“Even if she did, she doesn’t stand a chance.” Jim walked over to him then, in all his completely naked glory.

Spock seized him. “Indeed. Because you are mine.”

Jim kissed him. “Oh, baby, you know it.”

Flash Fic Friday, March 10, 2017

A bit of a self-indulgent mini flash fic this week. I had no prompt, just decided to write this to be obnoxious.

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS

He sat up in bed, his chest heaving with the effort to breathe. He rested his hand on his chest where his heart beat so rapidly, he wasn’t sure it would ever go back to its normal beat.

“Jim?”

Spock came out of the bathroom dressed in a cozy looking bathrobe, his hair wet and vaguely standing on end.

Jim nodded at him. “Hey.”

“The bad dream again?”

“Uh-huh. It got even farther along this time too.”

Spock came to him and sat beside him on the bed, reaching over to rub Jim’s back. “It is not reality, Jim.”

“I know. But it seemed so real.”

“Everyone knows that it is you and I who belong together and no one else,” Spock reminded him. “The very idea that I would have ever been in a relationship with Uhura is absurd.”

“Yeah.”

“As is the idea that a strong and capable woman such as Nyota needs a relationship with a man to be considered relevant.”

“For sure.”

“Or that she has to manipulate said man into putting her on the Enterprise as if her excellent set of skills wasn’t qualifications enough.”

“Uh-huh.”

“And the idea that she would openly kiss her superior officer in front of both their superior officer as though she is incapable of controlling her womanly self or for that matter that she would openly fight with her boyfriend during a dangerous mission in front of that same superior officer.”

Jim smiled a little at that. “You’re right about that. It’s definitely sexist.”

“Yes.” Spock rubbed Jim’s shoulders. “It is you who I love, who I cherish. We’ve always been gay in any universe.”

His smile widened. “Well, maybe not gay. But I’ll go with pansexual.”

Spock shook his head and leaned over to place a somewhat chaste kiss on Jim’s lips. “What do you wish to do for our shore leave?”

Jim cupped the back of Spock’s neck and drew his lips to his. “Go back to bed.”

Flash Fic Friday, March 03, 2017

My Prompt was a Walk in the Moonlight. This takes place immediately after the events of Star Trek: Beyond

kirky

“So I guess this is supposed to simulate moonlight,” Jim commented as he and Spock walked along a path on Yorktown.

“For what purpose?” Spock inquired, hands linked behind his back.

“To appear romantic I guess.” He shot a quick glance at Spock. “Not that we’re trying to be romantic or anything.”

Spock appeared to dismiss that bit of silliness without further thought. “As this is a space station, there would be no moonlight, so to produce artificial moonlight for aesthetic purposes is highly illogical.”

“Okay, Spock.”

“Furthermore I have never quite understood Terran fascination for moonlight. It is merely the reflection of light from the sun and there are no magical properties.”

Jim nodded wearily. “Okay, Spock.”

“Are you all right, Captain? You seem particularly out of sorts.”

“Just tired I guess. You can go back to doing whatever it was you were doing. Mission reports. Or-or, you know, socializing with Uhura.”

“Since you have just barely recovered from your recent engagement with Krall, I suspect you would benefit from additional respite.”

Jim sighed and stopped to lean against a pillar, gazing up at the artificial moonlight. “It’s just the last few hours of my birthday, I wanted a little walk. But I guess you’re right. Walking on Yorktown isn’t quite what it would be on Earth or some other similar planet.”

“What has happened to the doctor?”

And Jim tried not to think that Spock was attempting to push his pathetic captain off on Bones, but really, it did seem like that.

“Called away on a medical emergency. Really, Spock. It’s fine. You can go.”

Spock took half a step closer. “Does it hurt?”

Jim knew by the slight shift of Spock’s shoulders toward his eye that he meant his black eye. “Just a little. I’ve had worse. How about you? How do you feel?”

“I am fully recovered.”

“I doubt that.”

“I assure you, Captain, I am functioning at optimal levels.”

He smiled a little. “That’s good to know.” He paused. “I think…I’m procrastinating, of course.”

“Procrastinating?”

“I need to call my mother. Today isn’t only my birthday.”

“I understand,” Spock said with a sharp nod. “Unfortunately, it is not something I can assist you with, Captain.”

“Yeah, I know.” He moistened his lips. “She cries. Even after all this time.”

Spock said nothing to that, he just looked vaguely uncomfortable. And who could blame him? So was Jim.

“I will leave you to it.”

Jim nodded and watched as Spock, shoulders stiff, began to walk away, away from the fake moonlit path. “Spock?”

He stopped. Turned. “Yes, Captain?”

“We’re-we’re friends, right?”

“Indeed.”

“Because lately, I don’t know, we seem to have drifted away from that a little.”

“Perhaps,” Spock acknowledged. “I apologize for my part in distancing us.”

“No, it’s all right.” He straightened from the pillar. “Just…I really don’t want to be alone right now, so, do you think, even though it’s fake and all, you might just walk a little further with me?”

For a moment, Jim was sure Spock would refuse his pathetic, whiny request. But then he returned to Jim’s side.

Spock gestured to the path. “Shall we?”

Jim smiled and fell into place next to his first officer.

Flash Fic February 24, 2017

A lost article returned to it’s owner was my prompt.

spocky2

“Ambassador Spock?”

Spock stiffened before turning around. It was still odd to be called ambassador. That was a title more suited to his long deceased counterpart. And yet…it was what he was now.

He turned to face the young officer.

“Yes, Ensign?”

The ensign looked impossibly young. Blond hair, blue eyes. It reminded him of—

But no.

The ensign cleared his throat. “I was going through the admiral’s things. And I found this.”

He held out his closed fist toward Spock and Spock had no choice but to open his palm to receive it.

It was a simple gold ring with Vulcan words carved into it that were far too familiar and painful now to think of. It felt heavy and burdensome in his hand now and yet he closed his fingers around it and pulled his hand close to his side.

The ensign’s tongue came out and licked at his lips. “I-I think he’d have wanted you to have it, sir.”

For a moment words were too difficult to form but Spock made himself nod. For a long time he merely stared at the young man.

Until finally, reddening slightly, the ensign turned to leave.

“Thank you, David,” Spock managed to say.

David stopped, but he did not turn around. “You’re welcome.”

Flash Fic February 17

Today’s prompt: A perfect away mission and an experiment gone wrong.

poopsie

“God, that was awesome,” Jim declared as he stepped down from the transporter room. “That was one of the best missions yet.”

“Oh, you think so, do you?” Bones asked, his voice laced with sarcasm.

“Sure do. Don’t you?”

“Oh, gee, I don’t know. Maybe you ought to think about why maybe I didn’t think it was so awesome.”

Jim patted Bones’ arm. “The slugs?”

“You might have warned me about them.”

“I forgot.”

“They consider them a delicacy and an honor to offer them to you, doctor,” Spock said from beside them.

“Well, it’s no honor to me.” Bones shuddered. “I think I’m going to have nightmares for years involving a pretty girl coming toward me with a slug caught in tweezers. Ugh!”

Bones rushed ahead of them and out of the transporter room.

Jim smiled at Spock. “Well, I guess I’ll see you later on the bridge, Mister Spock.”

“You are not going there immediately?”

“No, I’m going to get cleaned up in my quarters and file a report on the mission. I should be there within half an hour.”

****

It was much later when Jim was preparing for bed when the chime of his door indicated he had a visitor.

“Come,” Jim called out as he pulled his tank top over his head.

To his surprise, Spock walked in.

“Hey, what can I do for you?”

“Jim.”

He smiled. “Is this a special occasion? You’re calling me Jim.”

“Yes. I…it is an experiment.” Spock took several steps closer.

“Calling me Jim?”

“Negative.” Spock hesitated a moment and then was suddenly up in Jim’s space. “This.”

And Spock kissed him. And kissed him. And kissed him.

“Jesus,” Jim said as Spock went in for his lips again.

He couldn’t breathe.

Wait. He can’t breathe.

Jim shoved Spock away.

His eyes wide, an expression of hurt on his face, Spock stepped back.

Jim pointed to himself, desperately gasping.

“You cannot breath?” Spock guessed.

Jim nodded frantically. And then he was out.

****

He woke lying on his back in sickbay.

“Welcome back, Jim,” Bones declared.

“I’m alive?” he croaked.

“Sure are.” Bones switched the biobed so that Jim was sitting up. Surrounding his bed besides Bones was Spock, Uhura, and Nurse Chapel.

“What happened?”

Bones smirked, looking at Spock. “You’re allergic to Spock.”

“Leonard,” Chapel admonished as Spock turned slightly green. “You’re allergic to Plomeek, Captain. Mister Spock had Plomeek soup for dinner. He still had trace amounts of it in his mouth.”

Spock turned greener still even as Uhura smothered a laugh.

“Oh.” Jim frowned. “Well, that sucks. Does that mean Spock can never eat Plomeek and kiss me at the same time?”

“Pretty much.”

“Fortunately it is not something I am able to have often,” Spock said, his back ramrod straight, his gaze over Jim’s head.

“There’s a shot we can give you if it happens again. Maybe Spock better keep a supply handy if he continues to decide to kiss you.” Bones chortled.

Chapel rolled her eyes. “Come on, let’s leave them alone. You interrupted my date with Ny, so if you don’t mind, I’d like to get on with it.”

The three of them left and it was just Jim and Spock.

Jim smiled. “Well.”

“I apologize for causing you to have an allergic reaction, Captain.”

“That was definitely no fun,” Jim admitted. “But the part just prior to it was.”

Spock arched a brow. “Was it?”

“Perhaps. I think you ought to continue with that experiment of yours,” Jim said with an encouraging smile. “I’m pretty sure you’ll get better results.”

Spock leaned over him, his lips mere inches from Jim’s. “I am a scientist after all.”

Flash Fic Friday, February 10, 2017

Obviously this is a continuation from the previous two weeks.
My prompt was fairly simple, Spock clears up any confusion.

1469048095301

If there was one thing Jim didn’t care for it was games. He wanted people to be straight with him and not hide behind anonymity. He’d never had a secret admirer and he wasn’t about to start. He tossed the rose in the trash.

Valentine’s Day was for fools and suckers. And Jim wasn’t about to be either one.

Okay, maybe his mood wasn’t the best. Jim could admit that.

His door chimed and he turned with a sigh.

Ship’s business would surely distract him from this ailment.

“Enter.”

When Spock stepped inside he quarters, Jim nearly ordered him out. But then caught himself. Spock was not responsible for Jim’s bad mood. Maybe indirectly, sure, but not really Spock’s fault.

“Hey.”

And after that brilliant opening, Spock remained silent, his gaze going past Jim to the little trash bin next to Jim’s desk.

“You did not appreciate the rose?” Spock asked.

“That?” Jim snorted. “Someone’s idea of a joke, I guess.”

“A joke?”

Jim crossed his arms in front of his chest. “What can I help you with?”

“I confess I am at a loss at present.”

He frowned. “A loss? About what?”

“Romantic gestures. The advice I have been given is apparently wrong.”

“Advice? You mean Uhura?”

Spock nodded. “Indeed.”

He tapped his fingers on his sleeve. “You got bad advice on romance for Uhura?”

“Negative.”

Jim blinked. “But you said—”

“From Uhura not for her.”

“Huh?”

Spock sighed. There was no other word for the sound his first officer made. “Everything I have tried has been unsuccessful. I can only come to the conclusion that my interest is not reciprocated after all.”

“Everything you’ve tried? For who?”

“You cannot be this obtuse.”

“Excuse me?”

The sigh again. “The rose, a declaration of affection, was left in your quarters by me. Since only a very few senior officers and your yeoman have access to your quarters at all, I would have thought it was fairly obvious.”

Jim stared at him.

“I attempted to ask you to a concert on Risa which you refused.”

“Wait, what? You were with Uhura.”

“Nyota and I were attending the concert as friends. It was her suggestion that I ask you, as it would be a casual, relaxing atmosphere in which to learn your interest.”

“My-my interest?” Jim felt a little faint.

“I also invited you to play chess last night, you refused the invitation. There were other attempts if you would like me to mention them.”

“Spock, I had no idea you wanted me to go the concert with you. I thought you were being polite.”

“I am not known to care for such social graces.”

Jim licked his lips. His heart was hammering. “That-that day was not good for me. It was Sam’s birthday and—”

“Yes.” Spock took a step closer. “I thought perhaps you would like to be distracted from your melancholia. But you did not appear to wish for a distraction.”

Jim bent down and retrieved the rose. “This is from you?”

“Yes. I was told it was an appropriate gesture for Valentine’s Day. I confess I have no notion how to be romantic in any way.”

Jim smiled and stepped up to Spock, holding the rose. “I don’t know, Mister Spock. I think maybe you’re doing okay.”

Spock stared at him, dark eyes unreadable yet intense. “Then may I presume my interest is reciprocated after all?”

“Are you kidding?”

“Vulcans do not—”

Jim laughed. “Yeah, I know.” He kissed Spock, right on the lips, the lips he’d wanted to taste, well since, forever, really. In all his forevers.

Spock’s hand curled around the nape of Jim’s neck, drawing him in closer.

“In fact—”

“It is time to be quiet now,” Spock murmured against Jim’s lips.

He tried to be affronted, but damn Spock could kiss. “Okay, I get it. Live in the moment. Because—”

“Jim.”

He smiled against Spock’s mouth. “Shutting up.”

Another Spock sigh. This one sounding warmer and softer somehow. “At last.”

Flash Fic Friday January 27, 2017

I’m going with sad this week. I still feel crappy and I’m feeling sorry for myself, so therefore, so is Jim. My challenge was Bones, a Birthday and a Malfunctioning Tricorder.

tumblr_oejercgd9z1rnsdhso1_500

We were getting a rare bit of shore leave. And on Risa, of all places. But I didn’t feel at all happy about it. Partying hard was the last thing I wanted. More like drowning in my own sorrow.

I took my rotation and made my way down there. I spotted my favorite Risan bar right away. It was ridiculously crowded and not at all what I wanted. So I turned away to seek another establishment.

I was surprised to see Spock beaming down as he always told me he didn’t need shore leave. So surprised I invited him on instinct.

“Mister Spock. Surprised to see you here.”

“Indeed, Captain.”

“I’m about to go sit and have a drink. Want to join me?”

He hesitated for the barest of maybe ten seconds, but his gaze moved beyond me to where I noticed, for the first time, Uhura stood waiting. She had changed into a blue dress with a deep vee, exposing an ample amount of her breasts. The dress had a handkerchief hem and reached down to about the middle of her calves. She had little matching blue slippers on her feet. She wore her long hair loose. She looked pretty. Ready to take on the pleasures of Risa.

Spock glanced back at me. “Nyota and I have plans to attend the concert in the garden courtyard. You are welcome to accompany us.”

I’d rather eat boiled slugs. But I made myself smile and shake my head. “Nah, that’s okay. You go ahead. Enjoy the concert.”

He inclined his head but then said nothing further as he quickened his pace to join her. She linked her arm with his and they continued walking in the direction of the garden center.

For a brief time I had thought…but no. Bones had said there had been trouble between them during the Krall incident. But whatever it had been had obviously been resolved.

And really, it was not my business. It never would be.

I turned away from the sight of them and kept walking until I found myself a fairly quiet bar. I sat at the far end of the bar counter and ordered myself two whiskey sours.

“Two drinks when you’re drinking alone is not good.”

I glanced at my best friend and smiled. “How’d you find me?”

Bones took the seat next to me. “Followed the smell.”

“Ha.”

He gestured to the drinks the bartender had set before me. “What’s up?”

“It’s his birthday, you know.”

Bones frowned. “Who’s?”

I stared at the drinks, left them untouched for now. “Sam.” I picked one up and swirled it in the glass. “Or was.”

Bones was quiet for a while. Then he said, “I’m real sorry about your brother and his wife.”

“I hadn’t seen him in years.” And yet his loss still hurt.

“Have you heard from your nephew?”

And that was weird, wasn’t it? Having a nephew but no brother.

“This was his favorite drink.” I took a sip.

“You’re ignoring the question.”

“I haven’t. It’s difficult with him being on Earth. And Aurelan’s parents are raising him now.”

I heard the low whine of the tricorder Bones held in his hand as it scanned me.

“Bones.”

“Damn fool thing. According to this, you’re dead.”

I smiled slightly. “I guess you need a new one. Unless I am.”

“You aren’t. And I’m going to see it stays that way.”

I pushed the other whiskey sour toward Bones. “Have a drink with me for Sam.”

He picked it up and we clinked glasses, both taking a sip.

“I resented him, you know. For leaving.”

“I can imagine.”

“Mostly because he got away.” I swallowed heavily. “He never had to go to Tarsus either.”

“No,” Bones agreed.

“But he went to Deneva.” I sighed. “Birthdays suck.”

“Yeah.”

I finished the drink, letting it burn down my throat and then pinched the bridge of my nose. “God, this is a shitty day.”

“Want me to get Spock?”

I laughed. “For what? So he can parade his girlfriend in front of me? No thanks. I think I’m just going back to the ship and sleep for twelve or fourteen hours.”

As I rose, he put his hand on my upper arm. “You’re depressed.”

I snorted. “You think?”

“I’m concerned, goddamn it.”

“I’ll be fine, Bones.”

“Jim—”

I hugged him then, because at the moment it really felt as though he was the only one who cared. Stupid and wrong, I knew. But even still.

“Why can’t I love you instead?” I whispered.

He shook his head. “I wish I knew. Life doesn’t work that way.”

I nodded and pulled away. “Not for me. I do love you.”

Bones paused, his eyes becoming very sad. He nodded, then looked away. “I love you, too, kid.”

I looked at the now empty glasses on the bar. “Happy Birthday, Sam.”
