My prompt was “We need to talk” from Spock, leading Jim to believe the worst.

“We need to talk.”

Cryptic and ominous words thrown Jim’s way just before the shift began.

And now they were almost all he could think about.

All they were doing was star mapping at present. So Jim was sitting there in his captain’s chair wondering what in the world Spock had meant.

It had to be bad. Those four words never led to anything good.

Maybe Spock wanted to leave Starfleet after all. He’d learned well after the fact that Spock’s break up with Uhura had been because he intended to go to New Vulcan to help with the rebuilding of the race. He’d apparently changed his mind but it was quite possible even probable he had changed it back.

According to Bones, the scuttlebutt on the ship was that Spock and Uhura had briefly reconciled after his rescue of her on Altamid but that by the time the Enterprise had been rebuilt with the ‘A” added, things had cooled between them once more. Uhura wanted more emotional attachment than Spock had been prepared to give.  There were even whispers that Uhura was seeing Scotty now.

Which meant there was absolutely nothing to keep Spock on the Enterprise.

What was Jim going to do without Spock? Could he beg Spock to stay? Hell, Jim had never begged anyone for anything in his life and he certainly wasn’t about to fucking start now.

Jim stood. “Spock, you have the conn,” he called over his shoulder as he entered the turbolift. He gave the order for the medbay.

Bones was with a crew member when Jim first stepped inside the medbay so with a vague smile at the nurse on duty, Jim went to wait for his friend in his office. He wasn’t even sure what he expected Bones to say, but he needed an ear right now. Or a shoulder, maybe.

But apparently whatever was going on with his patient was more complicated than he realized, so Jim ended up leaving the medbay without ever seeing Bones.

He returned to the bridge, conscious of Spock’s stare as he sat fidgeting in his chair.

Another few hours passed when he was commed by Bones.

“Jim, you wanted to see me?”

“No, never mind,” he said quickly. He certainly couldn’t talk here.

“If you’re sick—“

Jim heard Spock get out of his seat and walk over to stand next to him. He glanced at his first officer. “No, Bones. Not sick.”

“A headache?” Bones guessed.

“No, no, nothing. I’ll talk to you later.” He cut Bones off mid-word.

“Are you unwell, Captain?” Spock asked. “You did leave the bridge rather abruptly.”

“I’m fine, Commander.” He gave Spock a reassuring cocky smile.

When his shift was finally over, Jim raced for the turbolift shutting it in Sulu’s face so he could get away from Spock. He felt a bit guilty about it but not too bad. The longer he delayed hearing that Spock was leaving him, er, the Enterprise the better.

The first place Spock would look for him was his quarters so Jim hid out in Engineering. If Scotty found it odd he suddenly had a new assistant for a few hours he didn’t say so.

Finally, he was too exhausted not to head for his quarters but as he went down the corridors, he looked around every corner to be sure Spock wasn’t lurking, waiting for him.

He closed and locked his door once inside with a great deal of relief.

Thank God on this new Enterprise he didn’t have to share a bathroom with Spock.

Jim took a quick shower and dressed in loose fitting soft cotton pajama bottoms and a thin T-shirt. And when he removed his shirt, he remembered he had something to give to Spock. He couldn’t believe he’d forgotten it and hadn’t already given it to his first officer.

He removed the holo pic from his drawer and looked down at the picture of Spock with his mother. He was probably about twelve or thirteen in the picture and he looked so very Vulcan. His mother was smiling but of course Spock was not.

His door chimed and without even thinking about it, he called, “Come in.”

And of course it was Spock.

Damn it!

He set the holo picture down for the moment and turned to his stoic first officer.

“Look, I-I know what you’re going to say,”

Spock blinked at him. “You do?”

“Yeah.” He blew out a breath. “I was hoping it wouldn’t come to this. I’ve been afraid ever since I heard you and Uhura broke up for good.”

“I…see.”

“And you have to do what you have to do, I get it, but I really wish you wouldn’t,” Jim said softly. “I don’t know what I’ll do if you do.”

Something shuddered behind Spock’s dark eyes. “I do not need to do it.”

“Yeah?” Relief flowed through him and he smiled wide. “Really? I was so sure you were going to.”

“It was never my intention to upset you or make you feel uncomfortable with my declaration, Captain.”

“Ever since you said we needed to talk I’ve been freaking out.”

Spock straightened. Became stiffer still. “There is no need to freak out. I am Vulcan and can put aside my feelings in this matter so that I will suffer no emotional compromise.”

“Oh. Well. Damn.” Jim put his hand on his stomach. He was feeling queasy again. “If-if it means so much to you, I won’t stop you.”

“Captain—”

Jim looked away. “It’s selfish, I know. I just…I don’t want you to leave. I’ve told you before I don’t know what I’d do without you, and hell, I know that’s way too needy.”

“Leave? You want me to leave?”

Jim’s eyes widened as he looked back at Spock. “No! Never. But if you want to, it’s wrong of me to stop you.” He swallowed. “There were so many times when Uhura held you to her with emotional manipulation. I hated it. You never deserved that. And I can’t be like that. I would never hold you here if you didn’t want to be.”

“I do not understand.”

“Well neither do I!” Jim exclaimed. “It’s just that I love you and—” He slapped his hand over his mouth the second he realized what he’d said. But it was too late. Spock had clearly heard. There was no mistaking it. He lowered his hand and opened his mouth to say ‘totally in a brotherly way’.

But then Spock was suddenly kissing him, devouring him, pushing him against the bulkhead of the ship, with such fervor, such need, that Jim knew then that Spock didn’t view him at all as a brother.

Thank God.

A long time later, Jim stirred in Spock’s arms. “Does this mean you aren’t leaving?”

“It was never my intention to leave.”

“Well. What did you want to talk about?”

“I wished to ascertain whether you were in agreement to begin a romantic relationship with me,” Spock said in his snootiest voice.

Jim laughed. “Oh. Well. I guess you have your answer.”

“Indeed.”

“Hey. I have something for you.” He slipped out of Spock’s arms and patted naked over to his desk where he’d left the picture. He brought it over to Spock. “They found this in the wreckage of the ship and gave it to me when they were giving me some of the crew’s personal effects.”

Spock’s hands closed over it wistfully. “I thought it lost forever.” He paused. “Like her.”

“Oh, honey.” Jim hugged him.

Spock pulled him tight against him. “You have given her back to me in this small way. And you have given me the greatest gift I could ever imagine in you.”

“I love you,” Jim whispered. “I think…I’ve always loved you.”

Spock kissed him. Put his hand over Jim’s heart. “Taluhk nash-veh k’dular, t’hy’la.”

Flash Fic Friday, September 01, 2017

Something a little different for this week’s flash fic. I had wanted a really simple prompt as I was getting started late and there is so much going on right now. My friend, Kris, gave me the prompt that Spock is standing on a rock and Jim asks him what has his attention. But you know simple doesn’t always get that way when my imagination takes off and suddenly I knew there was way more to this than the scenario Kris gave me.

So while this week’s flash fic is indeed what she gave me, this is actually also a sneak peak on an upcoming much longer fic that I will be writing. At this point in the story, things are definitely “Pre-Slash”. This takes place after Beyond and the repair/rebuilding of the new Enterprise.

Jim smiled at the message he had just received. He looked around the immediate area of the planet they were surveying and didn’t see anything of particular interest.

He typed back, Can’t wait to see you too. Counting the hours until shore leave.

“Jim.” Bones slapped Jim on the shoulder, so he put away his device. “Look. Maybe you ought to go talk to Spock.”

“Huh? Why? What’s wrong with Spock?”

“His break up with Uhura is very recent.”

Jim shrugged. “They’ve broken up before. In fact, let’s see. They sort of broke up after the volcano. Then they broke up just before Altamid. They got back together both times. I think I heard about a time or two before I even met them, too. I’m guessing they’ll hit the sheets again within the week.”

Bones made a face. “I don’t need that image. But nope. This time I’ve heard it’s for good. This breakup was much more serious. He’s probably depressed.”

“Vulcans don’t get depressed.”

“He’s half human, Jim. Just, you know, try. You should take an interest in your crew and definitely your senior officers.”

Jim blew out a breath, and turned around to locate Spock. He was standing on a rock, tricorder in hand, eyebrows furrowed in extreme concentration.

“You really think they broke up for good?”

“Far be it from me to listen to ship’s rumors, but that’s what the scuttlebutt is.”

Jim crossed his arms in front of his chest and tapped his fingers on his arm. “Do you know what happened?”

“You mean who initiated the breakup?”

“Uh-huh. After the volcano, it was her. He was the one before Altamid due to the whole Vulcan baby thing. So, who was it this time?” Jim wondered.

Bones shrugged. “Does it matter?”

“Doctor McCoy, can you come over here? Jensen’s pricked his finger on a plant,” Sulu called to them.

Bones rolled his eyes. “My work is never done.”

Jim studied Spock after Bones walked away to work on Jensen. He didn’t look particularly wrecked by the breakup to Jim. His communication device chimed so he withdrew it from his pocket. Sure enough it was another message from Areel Shaw. The Enterprise had shore leave in only two weeks and it just so happened to be on a planet Areel currently resided on while she did some legal work for Starfleet. She would be getting time off while Jim was there so they planned to spend Jim’s shore leave time together having fun in the sun and in bed, of course. It was just a confirmation of what he’d last said, so he closed it and returned it to his pocket.

He approached Spock’s rock.

“Hello, Mister Spock.”

Spock did not look up from his tricorder. “Captain.”

“Anything interesting?” Jim asked, stepping onto the large rock, and peering over Spock’s shoulder.

“Actually, yes. This rock is multi-layered and—”

Jim’s attention immediately drifted elsewhere. He had begun to regret being part of this landing party. Nothing was really that interesting and he had so many reports he was behind on. Admiral Colton had been pestering him to get them all finished before shore leave.

“Captain?”

Jim smiled. “Yes?”

“You were not listening to a word I said.”

“Uh.” He could not really deny it. He hadn’t. And before he could stifle it, a yawn came out. Jim quickly covered it with his hand. But Spock certainly noticed as he eyes narrowed. “Sorry. Lack of sleep. You were saying?”

“Never mind, Captain. Your attention is, no doubt, needed elsewhere.”

He opened his mouth to reply, but Spock had turned his back to Jim in a plain display of dismissal. Jim closed his mouth. Well, fine then. So much for making an effort.

He stepped back off the rock and ordered a beam up for himself. Spock could certainly handle it.

My prompt, Spock confesses his love when Kirk and Spock are captured. Kirk believes it is because they are going to die, but Spock does it because they are going to live.

“Captain.”

There was no response. He could hear the captain breathing, but he made no other sound in the darkness. From Spock’s position chained to the wall he could not see Kirk. The alien race native to this planet had chained Kirk to the opposite wall and left them in a cell of complete darkness.

They had come once to feed them, hours ago now. But otherwise they had been left alone in silence. They had not even been chained together.

“Captain.”

“What, Spock?”

Kirk sounded weary and despondent. Spock knew he was injured. When they’d been abducted from the landing party, the one in charge had decided to beat Kirk for his insolent mouth, or so he declared. Spock had been forced to watch as Kirk had been pummeled over and over again. When they had finished pummeling him, they’d kicked him. Spock had been distraught. He had offered to take the captain’s place for the beating, but they had ignored him. Spock wanted to tear them apart, but he could do nothing. He was useless and restrained.

“Are you in severe pain?”

“Kind of a dull ache now.”

“When we return to the ship the doctor will see to your injuries.”

Jim made some sort of derisive noise. “We’re not returning to the ship, Spock. We’re going to die here.”

“I do not believe that.”

Kirk said nothing to that. Just lapsed back into his silence.

“Captain.”

“What now?”

“There is something that I have…hesitated to inform you, but I believe I cannot withhold this information from you anymore.”

“Last confession before we die, Spock?”

“We are not going to die,” Spock insisted.

“They have no idea where we are. I’m pretty sure I’ve got internal injuries. Spock—”

“We will be rescued in time.”

“Fine. What do you want to tell me?”

“You are my friend,” Spock began.

A snort. “You’ve already established that the last time I was dying. Which I actually did die.”

Spock’s side twisted. “I am aware.”

“Well, it’s all right. I know we’re friends.”

“Jim. I wish to convey that we are more than friends.”

“Comrades. Brothers. Yeah. I get it.”

Spock closed his eyes. “You do not. Over the many months, even years, that we have served together, I have come to rely on our interactions above all others.”

“I’m not sure Uhura would be thrilled to hear that.”

“Nyota and I ended our relationship before Altamid,” Spock informed him.

“Huh. Didn’t you get back together after the whole tracking necklace thing?”

“Negative. We agreed we made better friends.” Spock exhaled very slowly. “You are an uncommonly attractive male and I have been…enamored of you for some time.” He did not think enamored was quite the correct word, but since he was pressed for time to make Kirk understand, Spock decided to go with it.

“So…you are attracted to me.”

It went far beyond attraction, of course. But at least he was getting somewhere.

“This is a really odd time to tell me you want to fuck, Spock.”

Or not.

If Spock could, he would pinch the bridge of his nose in frustration.

“I do not want to fuck.”

There was a pregnant pause during which he was certain Jim was about to say something that would frustrate him.

“Now,” Spock quickly added. “In the future, if we are mutually prepared to—”

“A future we don’t actually have.”

“Engage in satisfactory copulation—”

“It would be more than satisfactory, buddy.”

“Then I see nothing that will impede us from doing so.”

“Being dead might impede us,” Jim said dryly.

Spock counted to five. “I am desperately in love with you,” he blurted out, before Jim could interrupt him again.

Spock felt a moment of disorientation and then heard the slight whine of the transporter engaging.

He reappeared on the transporter pad, without his restraints. As did the captain, who was even now being pounced on by McCoy.

“Get Spock to sickbay too,” McCoy barked as he carried Kirk away in a stretcher.

****

“What are you waiting for” Nyota asked Spock as she stepped up to him on the bridge. “Go to sickbay.”

“The bridge—”

“I’ll call Scotty to the bridge.” She swatted his shoulder. “You want to be there, Leonard said he’s awake, don’t you?”

Spock stood. “Yes.”

“Then go. He’s waiting.”

Spock had thought his duty should come before his desire to see Kirk, but Nyota was right. He did not want to wait any longer. He had advised Nyota that he had, at last, confessed his regard to their captain. Something he had discussed doing numerous times with her since the demise of their relationship.

McCoy greeted him with two raised eyebrows and pointed to the side. “Over there, Romeo.”

Spock ignored his odd reference to a teenager who killed himself, and hurried to Kirk’s biobed.

The captain was sitting up, but he looked pale and wan. “Hey.”

Spock swallowed as he got closer.

“I guess you were right again, Mister Spock. We didn’t die.”

“For which I am gratified.”

“Me too,” Jim said softly. “But that fucking you wanted to do? That’s going to have to wait. At least for a day or two.”

“Captain—”

“Come here,” Kirk said in his most imperious captain’s voice.

Spock stepped so close he was almost on the biobed.

“Come here,” Kirk said again, gesturing for Spock to come toward his face. Spock did. Kirk tapped his lips. “Here.”

Spock pressed his lips to Jim in a gentle kiss so as not to cause his captain any injury. It was not enough. But for now, it would have to be.

Jim’s eyes were shining as Spock gazed down at him. “I’m pretty desperate too.”

Married Spirk is always welcome. This week’s prompt was a simple one: A Massage.

When the door to their quarters opened, Jim glanced up from the book he was reading. Spock stalked in. There was no other word for it. Jim could tell from his position on their bed that Spock was wound up tight.

“You okay?”

Spock shot him a look that was just short of incredulous. He did not even dignify Jim’s question with an answer, but rather went right to the wardrobe where he kept his Vulcan robes.

“Was he angry?”

“Vulcans do get angry.” His predictable response. Spock always fell back on predictability when he was ruffled.

“Disappointed?”

“There was a level of that,” Spock replied.

Spock had been forced to advise his father that they would not make their planned visit to New Vulcan for shore leave as originally planned. Starfleet had ordered them to explore another sector of the universe and it would mean they would be completely out of range. They’d had to select a new destination for the crew’s shore leave. Jim hadn’t been thrilled either for he knew Sarek had been anticipating their visit for some time.

“I’m sorry, sweetheart.”

“You are not responsible for the change in plans.”

“I know, but I’m still sorry.” Jim knew that Sarek was not the only one who experienced some level of disappointment. If Jim could change it for Spock he would. He knew Spock hadn’t been able to see his father since the Enterprise had gone out again.

Spock had now changed into his softest brown robe, which was not the one he generally wore while meditating.

“No meditation tonight?” Jim asked.

“Negative. I do not need it.”

Jim suspected as agitated as his husband was that was not exactly true, but he was hardly about to argue. Any time Spock’s smelly incense wasn’t lit within their quarters was a win for Jim.

“Can I get you anything?” he asked as he set aside his book.

Spock shook his head and lifted the covers next to Jim, joining him in the bed. Which was also surprising. Spock generally spent some time attending to business at the terminal at their desk before coming to bed.

Jim watched him for a moment as he attempted to settle in. “I’m sorry.”

“You have already said that.”

He smiled a little at Spock’s gruff tone. “It really sucks.”

Spock had no response to that because, Jim suspected, he agreed it sucked but didn’t want to say it.

He tugged on his lip with his teeth. “Maybe I should have argued more.”

“T’hy’la, none of this is your fault and your repeated apologies are—”

“Pissing you off. I know.” Jim sighed. “You know what you need?”

“I am not prepared to have sexual intercourse tonight.”

He said it so primly that Jim had no choice but to smile.

“I’ll try to contain myself,” Jim said dryly.

“Jim—”

“I wasn’t talking about fucking, Spock. Though I think I could fuck it out of you.”

Spock narrowed his eyes.

“Lay on your stomach.”

Spock just stared at him.

“That’s an order.”

At that an eyebrow shot up. But Spock did not argue, for once, and turned over onto his stomach.

“Oh wait. I should have had you slide your robe off.”

“Jim—”

“Oh, for pity’s sake, Spock, I’m not going to take advantage of you. Just do as you’re told.”

Spock lifted up and slipped his arms out of the sleeves of the robe and lowered it to his waist.

Jim put his hands on Spock’s back and pressed down gently.

“What are you doing?”

“Giving you a massage,” Jim explained. “And don’t say, Vulcans don’t like massages or you will be sleeping alone.”

Spock closed his eyes. “I was not going to say that.”

“Good.” He moved up to Spock’s shoulders and began to massage there.

“And I would not sleep alone.”

“No?”

“Wherever you went I would chase you down,” Spock murmured.

Jim smiled. “I know. And I’d be sure to be caught, too.”

“I know that as well.”

Jim continued to pinch, prod, and rub Spock’s back, neck and shoulders until his Vulcan was practically purring putty in his hands. Jim laughed.

Spock opened one eye. “What is amusing?”

“Practically purring putty.”

Spock closed his eye again. “I never entirely understand you.”

“But I keep you on your toes, don’t I?”

“You do indeed.”

Suddenly, Spock turned onto his back and ensnared the back of Jim’s neck with his hand, pulling a startled Jim’s lips down on his.

“Feel better?” Jim murmured against Spock’s very tasty lips.

“I am still disappointed,” his husband admitted. “But I do feel better.”

Jim readjusted himself so that his head lay on his husband’s chest. “Good. Computer, lights off.”

Spock kissed the top of Jim’s head. “Goodnight, T’hy’la.”

“Night, sweetheart.”

My prompt this week was a dessert shared in celebration after a successful mission

“This seems to be a very strange custom, Captain.”

I eyed my first officer over the banana split that lay between us.

“It’s not a custom, Mister Spock.” I scooped up a bite of surprisingly creamy goodness. “Although it ought to be.”

“If it is not a custom, then why did you suggest it?”

I sighed. Or mentally anyway. On the outside, I smiled. “Just as a celebration for a successful mission.”

Spock frowned minutely. “We have had, surprisingly, several successful missions. And yet you have never suggested indulging in banana splits before.”

I decided to ignore the surprisingly comment. “It just seemed fun to do. You need to have more fun, Spock.”

He contemplated this while he dipped his spoon in the ice cream covered in pineapple. Or what passed for it anyway. “Fun. Do you refer to the sort of fun you had when you engaged in intercourse with the prime minister’s niece?”

I sputtered out ice cream. “No! And-and…you know about that?”

“She was very vocal in her appreciation of your attributes.”

I felt myself blush and covered it by wiping a napkin over my mouth. “That-that was a while ago.”

“For which I am grateful.”

I cleared my throat. “Anyway, you could, I don’t know. Feed me.” I laughed to show I was joking.

Predictably, he did not get it. “Feed you, Captain? Is there something that has rendered you incapable of tending to this basic function?”

I sighed out loud this time. “No, Spock. Forget it. And honestly, you’re in my quarters eating a banana split naked, I think considering that, you can consider calling me Jim.”

“You make a valid point.”

I smiled at that and lowered my gaze as I went to spoon more ice cream. But as I looked up, I noticed Spock holding out his spoon toward me, ice cream covered in pineapple sauce.

My smile widened to a grin, as I leaned in to take the bite. Just as I did, he turned the spoon and the ice cream and sauce landed on my chest and began to slide down my torso.

Spock’s eyes were warm as he glanced at the pathway the ice cream took. “Very clumsy of me. I suppose I shall have to eat that.”

I sucked in a breath.

“Perhaps you are correct, Captain.” Spock began to lower himself on the bed toward my lap. “This should become a custom.”

Warm

This turned out a little more sorrowful than I originally intended and I almost just deleted it thinking it was too sad. But what the hell. Here it is.

Garden

Jim found him tending his garden, knelt in the dirt, fingers in the soil. His shoulders were slightly stooped, but really that was almost the only sign of his age. That and the black hair now liberally streaked with gray.

“Hey.”

He looked up at the darkening sky. It was not quite four but this time of the year it got dark far too early. Plus Jim was fairly sure a storm was coming.

Spock looked up from the garden he tended. His lips quirked just slightly when he took in that Jim had bundled himself into his warmest coat. “You should have stayed inside, t’hy’la. It is cold out here. I will be in soon.”

“To think I used to be always hot,” Jim replied. “While I’m grateful for the extra time I got from that super blood, it would have been nice to have a few other perks.”

“The fact that you are still with me is all that I need. I will warm you up later.”

Jim smiled. “Is that a promise?”

“Of course.”

Jim looked down at what Spock was growing. “Your onions are doing great.”

“Indeed. I will be harvesting them tomorrow and most everything else, too. The weather is turning too cold to grow much of anything much longer.”

He sounded wistful and Jim hated that. He should have let them move to a climate better suited for Spock’s wanting to grow things.

“Speaking of onions,” Jim said instead. “I’m making potato leek soup and we’ll have hot fresh baked rolls with it.”

“I look forward to it.”

There didn’t seem much else to say and Jim really was cold.

“Okay, I’ll see you inside.”

“Yes, t’hy’la.”

Jim bit his lip and turned to go back into the farmhouse. He paused on the porch to look back. The thing he feared most, more than any other in this lifetime, was that he would outlive Spock. He would ensure that it would not be for long, should that happen, but it still plagued him. In the other universe, Spock had died saving the Enterprise, he knew that. And the other him had endured it. Somehow. And in the end he’d made sure Spock lived once more. Yet, that Spock had died alone without Jim, anyway.

He watched as Spock stood with still a great amount of grace. He wiped the dirt off his robe and turned toward the path to return to the farmhouse himself.

Spock arched his brow when he saw that Jim still stood on the porch.

Jim pulled him up the stairs and wrapped his arms around his Vulcan.

“I am still covered in dirt, ashayam.”

“I don’t care.”

Spock leaned his head against Jim’s. “You did not return to the warmth of the house.”

“I know. It’s not warm without you.”

“You are most—”

“Illogical. Yeah.” Jim pulled back and smiled at the Vulcan that was everything. “I love being your illogical human.”

Spock’s hand came up to caress Jim’s cheek. “You do it so well.”

He laughed then and soundly kissed his husband. “I love you. So much.”

“And I worship and adore you.”

Jim took Spock’s hand and led him inside the farmhouse.

And it was indeed…warm.

A kiss under aurora borealis type lights

His captain seemed strangely quiet as they continued to explore the planet. Generally it was rare for Jim to shut up. Spock believed it was likely due to the personal transmission he’d received that day and though Spock had tried to hint to Jim that he would like to know what it was, Jim pretended not to take the hint. But Spock knew he was troubled.

The sky was becoming night as Jim stepped toward the edge of the cliff, he stopped, staring at the multi-colored purple and bluish lights that stretched across the sky.

“Aurora borealis,” Jim said softly.

Spock glanced at them. “The aurora borealis lights are the result of electrons colliding with the reaches of the planet’s atmosphere.”

“Spock.”

He looked to Jim, who he noticed was not looking at him, but at the lights. “Yes, Captain?”

“They’re just pretty.”

Tearing his gaze away from the beauty of Jim’s profile, Spock looked at the lights once more. “Indeed.”

He stepped closer to Jim so that even though they were not touching, he could feel the heat of Jim’s body.

His gaze on Jim’s face once more, Spock slipped his index and forefingers toward Jim’s hand. Jim didn’t shift his gaze from the lights but his hand moved an inch toward Spock, accepting the touch of Spock’s straying fingers. Their fingers touched and Spock stroked along the familiar knuckles. He heard the tiniest hitch of breath from his captain.

The captain’s communicator beeped. With his other hand, he removed it from his belt. “Kirk here.”

“We’re ready to beam you and Mister Spock up now, Cap’n,” Mister Scott said cheerfully.

Jim’s blue gaze finally strayed to Spock’s. It was Spock’s turn to catch his breath.

Jim smiled. He did not move his hand from Spock’s. “Energize.”

Flash Fiction Friday (early) July 21

So my friend AO gave me the prompt for this week. She wanted Jim to speak to Spock about his bedside manner. As per the below scene in the movie. Of course since Jim “dies” before he could have that conversation, I decided to have it in the hospital. And well, I couldn’t just leave it at that.

Also, you will note that rather than wait until Friday I am posting it today. I’ll be working on the new chapter of Didn’t We Almost Have it All so went ahead and posted this.

James T. Kirk: [Kirk’s HUD breaks midway through his space-jump] Spock my display is down, I’m flying blind.

Spock: Captain, without your display compass hitting your target destination is mathematically impossible.

James T. Kirk: Spock, if I get back, we really need to talk about your bedside manner.

“Spock’s here again.”

Jim looked at Bones as he scanned him. “Yeah?”

Bones nodded. “Waiting outside. I’ll send him in as soon as I’m done checking on you.”

Jim smiled a little and glanced toward the door. Bones had told him Spock had visited every day while he was in a coma. The day Bones had brought him out of it, Spock had been there. And every day since he’d awakened. Off and on, anyway.

He’d had other visitors, too. Scotty, Sulu, Chekov. Even Uhura had come by the day before yesterday with Spock.

Bones turned off his scanner and stood back. “You’re doing well. Great even.  Better than I expected.”

“Super blood?”

“I need to run some more tests, but yeah, I think so. For someone who was mostly dead, it’s pretty remarkable.”

“When can I get out of here then?”

Bones shook his head. “Not until I run a whole battery of tests. Things look good now, but in a day or so, it could go bad.”

“You and your damn caution,” Jim muttered. “I feel great. And I hate being in this bed.”

“Yeah I know you do. I’ll send a nurse in later after Spock leaves to help you take a shower.” Bones waggled his brows. “A beautiful brunette.”

Jim smiled. “Send Spock in, will you? There’s something I need to talk to him about.”

“He sure seems fond of you,” Bones said, staring down at him. “I gotta say I’m surprised.”

“Why are you surprised?”

“I thought you’d finally found someone you couldn’t charm,” Bones said. “But apparently that old Kirk charm even works on Vulcans.”

Jim rolled his eyes. “Just send him in, will you?”

Less than a minute later, Spock appeared by his hospital bed. He was dressed in the gray dress uniform he’d worn when Jim had first awakened. He held his hat in his hands.

“Hey Spock. How’s it going?”

“I have been to meetings in headquarters and—”

Jim waved that away. “No, not about work. You doing okay?”

Spock blinked at him but did not reply.

Jim shook his head bemusedly. “There’s something we need to discuss, Spock.”

His first officer straightened and gave a very tiny sigh. “Yes. I…yes. I do believe it is important for us to discuss matters as they stand now as well.”

“Then you know what I want to talk to you about?”

Spock nodded. “Yes. I have suspected you would want us to discuss it.”

“Good.” Jim indicated the edge of the bed. “Was there something you wanted to say first?”

“No. I will wait for you.”

Jim nodded. “Seriously, Spock. You need help.”

“Captain?”

“Your bedside manner.”

“I…what?”

Jim laughed. “Remember? When I was flying over to Marcus’ ship with Khan?”

Spock stared at him. “I recall that moment.”

“Well, then don’t you remember? I said if I made it back we’d have to discuss your bedside manner.” Jim gestured to himself and the hospital room. “Well, here I am. Granted my making it back is up for interpretation. But I’m definitely here.”

Spock’s lips thinned. “I…see.”

“You should see your face right now,” Jim said, shaking his head. “But really. I’m out there flying blind, fully aware it’s likely I won’t make it, and instead of words of comfort you have to tell me the odds I’ll survive.” Jim chuckled. “You’re one in a million, Spock.”

“It was logical to provide you with factual information during an important mission.”

“Yeah. I know.” He smiled. There was something a little off in the way Spock held himself. Maybe Vulcans didn’t appreciate being teased. “Anyway, that was all.”

“Of course, Captain.”

Definitely something off.

“Did you…was there something else you wanted to talk about?” He seemed to have surprised Spock so maybe there had been something else weighing on Spock’s mind. He certainly hoped he didn’t want to tell Jim he was leaving.

Spock hesitated slightly, then shook his head. “No, Captain. There is nothing else.”

Jim searched Spock’s face. There was definitely tension there. Perhaps he thought Jim was reprimanding him. “Spock, you know, I was just joking, right?”

“Joking?”

“About your bedside manner. I just wanted to give you a hard time. I was kidding. Trying to lighten things up.”

Spock nodded very slightly. “I am aware it was not a serious reprimand, Captain.”

“Well.” Jim licked his lips. “Good then.”

“If you will excuse me, I—”

Jim frowned. His chest tightened thinking of Spock leaving. “You’re going already? I thought-I thought you’d stay.” Whenever Spock was there, staying in the hospital wasn’t so bad.

“Unfortunately not. I only stopped by to ascertain your welfare. Since you seem to be doing well, I will be on my way,” Spock said coolly.

“You have things to do then?”

“Indeed.”

“Oh.” Jim looked away and nodded. “Okay. Um, thanks then.”

“You are welcome.”

“See you tomorrow?” Jim asked hopefully.

“I do not believe I can make it tomorrow.”

“Oh. All right.” He tried a smile, but it hurt to make his lips move like that. There was a ball of ice in the pit of his stomach.

Spock nodded, turned and left.

Jim closed his eyes,

Fuck.

****

It was another week before Bones would release him and Spock had insisted Jim stay at his temporary apartment for at least the first week he was out. Bones had agreed with Spock and therefore Jim had gone along with it. If it meant getting out, it was worth it.

Whatever he’d said that day to Spock though had changed things between them. That last week in the hospital, Spock had barely come to visit him and when he had, it had been all business. He’d been surprised when Spock insisted Jim stay with him.

And now as he went into Spock’s kitchen to get a glass of water, he saw Spock standing outside on his patio talking to Uhura. They were standing very close and Uhura had her hands up on Spock’s shoulders.

A lump formed in his throat before he could prevent it. What the hell was he even doing here? Later, he’d probably hear them having sex in Spock’s bedroom. And he-he’d just wish he died after all.

He hated all this. Hated feeling like he did.

One thing that had definitely changed since he woke up from being dead. His emotions were all over the fucking place and just now he felt the prick of tears.

God, he was damn pathetic.

The patio door opened and Jim wiped frantically at his eyes.

“Captain? Are you all right?” Spock hurried into the kitchen.

Jim turned away. “Yeah.”

“Are you in pain?”

“No. I just…” And the stupid tears started rolling down his cheeks.

Spock seized his arms and turned Jim to face him. “Captain? Jim? What is wrong?”

“Nothing. I’m fine,” Jim insisted.

“Please.” Spock suddenly looked stricken. “Your crying disturbs me.”

Jim pushed away. “Well, I can’t help it, okay? Don’t watch then.”

“That is not what I meant,” Spock said softly, though he allowed Jim to free himself. “Your well-being is important to me.”

Jim snorted. “Because of your duty.”

“Negative.”

Jim chanced a look at him. He couldn’t read anything in Spock’s expression.

“I am aware that you do not share my regard and perhaps even find it a burden but—”

“Your…wait. What? Your regard?” Jim’s jaw dropped open.

“I wish to ensure your safety and well-being at all times,” Spock said softly.

Jim drew in a shaky breath and then stepped closer. “When-when you say regard, just…what do you mean?”

“Captain—”

“Spock, don’t-don’t ‘captain’ me right now. Do you share my feelings or not?”

“Share?” Spock stared at him dumbfounded.

“God, you are the most infuriating—”

Spock cut off his tirade by reaching for Jim, grasping his arms and pulling him up against him. “There is something we need to discuss.” With a shaky hand, Spock touched Jim’s cheek.

“Later.” Jim pressed his lips to Spock’s, whose mouth softened and opened under his with a slight hitch of breath. “Take me to bed.”

“Has Doctor McCoy cleared you for strenuous sexual activity?”

“Strenuous, huh?” Jim smiled against Spock’s mouth. “That sounds pretty good.”

“Jim—”

“But if you”re worried, how about you just fuck me real slow?”

My prompt this week was “Irritation”.

SpockZacharyQuinto

The air was heavy in their quarters when Jim stepped inside. He couldn’t quite put his finger on it but there was something a little off about his husband.

And it was also unbearably hot.

He immediately tugged at the collar of his uniform.

“Computer lower temperature twenty degrees,” Jim called out.

Spock, who was at the terminal, glanced up at Jim, his dark eyes stormy.

“Uh, sorry. It’s really hot in here.” He paused to take in the cold look of his husband. “Are you mad at me?”

“Vulcans do not get angry,” Spock returned coolly.

Normally, Jim might have teased Spock and said that it was his human side that was mad then, but he had a feeling that wouldn’t go over well, so he just smiled and removed his tunic.

“Did you eat?” Jim asked as he tossed it on the bed.

Spock rose, walked around the desk, and snatched up Jim’s tunic. “Is that where this goes?”

“No.” A smile. “Did you eat?”

“Considering you have been gone for hours, I would have thought you would not expect me to wait for you.”

Jim kept his smile. “Good point.”

Spock sniffed. “You are inebriated.”

“I had a few drinks with Bones,” he said easily.

“You spend too much time with him.” His voice was low and almost a growl. Spock turned away and placed Jim’s tunic in the laundry chute.

Jim decided to let that go. He went into the bathroom, stripping out of his undershirt as he did so. Even twenty degrees cooler, it was far too hot in their quarters. Spock usually kept the temperature down for Jim’s comfort. Apparently that was not the case tonight.

He splashed water on his face and then rubbed soap in, washing away the day’s dirt. He really did smell like alcohol, which he knew Spock found unpleasant, so he brushed his teeth too.

Spock stood on the edge of the bathroom watching him. “Water is everywhere,” he admonished.

“Uh.” Jim looked at the sink. “Sorry. I’ll—”

“I will clean it up,” Spock said, pushing him aside. “You will just spread it around.”

Jim tamped down his own irritation with effort and reached for a towel to dry his hands. “Spock, are you—” He put his hands on Spock’s upper arms.

“Your hands are wet,” Spock snapped, pulling out of Jim’s grip. “I have never understood how a brilliant starship captain is incapable of drying his hands properly.”

“Sorry,” Jim mumbled. He went to pick up his undershirt, but Spock had already scooped it up. Jim turned and left the bathroom. He took off his boots and pants, putting the boots in the closet, and the pants in the laundry chute, even before Spock came out of the bathroom. He slipped out of his briefs next and reached for his sleeping shorts.

When he turned around, Spock was standing just inside their quarters staring intently at him. He tried another smile.

“Okay?”

“Affirmative.”

Jim didn’t push it. Instead, he pulled on a tank top, and went over to the replicator.

“You are going to eat now?”

“Yeah. I’m hungry. Didn’t eat before.”

Spock said nothing to that though Jim could definitely feel his disapproval through their bond. Which, by the way, was thrumming with irritation. Jim decided, for the moment, to ignore it. Whatever had his husband in a tizzy, he imagined Spock would get around to telling him eventually.

He chose a chicken sandwich because it would be easier to eat at his desk, so with the plated sandwich, he headed to the desk and the terminal.

“You are not going to bed?” Spock asked.

Jim resisted the urge to say since he intended to eat, obviously not. Instead, he practiced his smile once more. “I have a report that has to be done tonight.”

“You had a report you knew had to be finished tonight and yet you continued spending hours drinking excessively with Doctor McCoy.”

The smile became just a little harder to form. “It was not excessive. I had a couple of drinks.”

Spock said nothing to that. Just sort of glowered.

“Did you meditate tonight, Sweetheart?” Jim asked then as he pulled up the report he had to finish.

“Yes.”

When Spock did not elaborate further, Jim picked up his sandwich, took a bite, and then began to work.  After a few minutes, he realized Spock had moved quite a bit closer to the desk and was now sitting on the edge, staring at Jim with heated eyes.

“Hi,” he said softly.

Spock did not reply but his gaze lowered to Jim’s lips and then down to Jim’s body. Even though Jim wore a tank top and shorts he suddenly felt very naked.

“Spock.”

“Yes, Jim?”

“You’re not angry with me?”

“I am not.”

“Yet you are acting—”

Spock scooted closer.

Jim licked his lips.

Spock grabbed his wrist and pulled it from the keyboard.

“Hey! Spock, what are you—”

“You will cease working and come to bed,” Spock ordered.

“What? Who do you think…?”  Jim’s stomach suddenly dropped. “Oh, fuck. You’re-you’re–”

He was pulled to his feet. Then the room lurched as Spock picked him up and slung Jim over his shoulder.

“Wait! Spock. I have to notify Bones and—”

He was slapped on the ass.

“O-okay. You notify Bones then.”

He found himself thrown on the bed as he watched a very flushed Vulcan pull out a communicator. “Doctor, we will be busy for approximately three point five days. Do not interfere.”

“Three point five days? Spock, what are you—”

“Spock out.”

“Wait, you stupid hobgoblin!”

Spock closed his communicator and tossed it across the room.

He pounced on the bed, laying on top of Jim, crushing his mouth over his.

Jim broke the kiss with a huge gulp of air and before Spock could dive back in, he said, breathlessly, “Not that I’m complaining but—”

“You are complaining.”

“Okay.” Jim licked his lips. “But a little more notice would have been ideal.”

“Acknowledged,” Spock said in the softest of voices and for a moment Jim thought, well, maybe it wasn’t what Jim thought after all. But then he saw the wicked, possessive gleam in Spock’s eyes just before he tore the shorts from Jim’s body.

Okay, for sure.

Pon far.
