Flash Fic, September 11, 2020

In 2018 I wrote a song fic, How Am I Supposed to Live Without You? A Michael Bolton song but I preferred the Laura Branigan version.

I even got art for it.

This is a sequel to that short story.

“How long’s it been?”

Jim looked up from the test he was studying for. “I don’t know. Thirty minutes?”

“No, brainless. Since, you started seeing my teacher.”

Jim blushed. “I’m not seeing him. We just, we’ve gone for tea and coffee a few times.”

“Ten times.”

“That’s a few.”

Bones snorted and flung himself dramatically on to his back on his dorm room bunk.

“Sometimes we have muffins and cookies with it.”

“You’ve also been to dinner with him.”

“Just twice.”

“Three times. And don’t you have a date tonight?”

Jim sighed. “It’s not a date, Bones.”

“Going to the movies, just the two of you. You don’t like him?”

“I like him.”

“Don’t tell me you’re still mooning over Tommy?”

“I’m not.” Jim scowled. “I’m just…”

“If Spock isn’t who you want, Jim, you probably shouldn’t string him along. Isn’t he the one who keeps inviting you?”

“Yeah but…”

There was a knock at the door. Jim looked at Bones.

“That’s him. I gotta go.”

“Think about what I said.”

“Bones”. Jim shook his head.

He opened the door and smiled. “Hi. Let me just grab my coat.”

“Your scarf too. The wind is picking up and it will be quite cold when the movie is over.”

“Okay.”

Jim turned to get his scarf off the coatrack and saw that Bones was sitting up staring at Spock.

“Good evening, Doctor McCoy.”

“Hello Spock.”

Jim bit his lip. “Want to-want to come with us?”

He was aware that Spock turned his head to stare him. He felt his cheeks warm.

Bones looked like he was biting the inside of his cheek. “No, that’s quite all right. Go on.”

They went out into the night.

Jim wrapped in his fleece coat and scarf, trying not to look in Spock’s direction. They made it out of the area where the dorms were before Spock stopped him.

“Jim, I believe we should forgo the planned movie to talk.”

Which absolutely filled Jim with dread. But he nodded.

“Where?”

Jim assumed he’d pick somewhere close and public and quiet. Where a quick exit could be made.

“My apartment is not too far.”

Well. That was a surprise and Jim wasn’t sure what to make of that, but he nodded and followed Spock there.

They hadn’t ever gone there. Or Jim hadn’t. So he didn’t know where he was going but the building was familiar.

Once inside, and in an apartment on the second floor, Spock turned to Jim.

“Jim, I am…”

“You’re leaving, right?”

“What?”

“Going back to Vulcan. Isn’t that it?”

Spock stared at him. “No.”

Jim closed his eyes and then opened them again. “What?”

“Jim, I have spent these many weeks asking you on dates—”

“Dates.”

“Trying to woo you and—”

“Woo me.”

“With your inviting along McCoy I can only surmise that you are not interested in a romantic pairing and that is your choice, and while, I am, admittedly disappointed, I wish to make it clear that a friendship is an acceptable alter…mm.”

Jim flung himself into Spock’s arms and kissed him.

Spock kissed right back.

And then, when they came up for air, Spock gazed into Jim’s eyes.

“Then I surmise you are interested. I do not understand.”

“Before, I had this guy, and I was crazy about him. So in love.”

“That was why you were crying on the ground when I met you.”

“Yeah. I never told him I loved him, and he wanted someone else anyway and he moved away. I thought …if I started to become too involved with you, that you would leave too, that you only wanted to be friends, just like him, and I didn’t want to-I was afraid for that to happen. If I allowed myself to think we were something more than friends, well, and you went to Vulcan or…”

“I am not going anywhere, Jim.” Spock pushed him against the nearest wall and kissed him again. “And I definitely want to be more than friends.”

Jim grinned. “Me too.”

“About the movie.”

Jim grabbed the collar of Spock’s sweater and drew him close. “What movie?”

Flash Fic, September 09, 2020

“Are you nervous?” Vanik asked Jim as Spock’s significant other stood in front of a full length mirror dressed in his red cadet’s uniform.

Jim glanced down at him. “Nervous?”

“About the first day.”

Jim smiled. “It’s not really the first day. I had summer courses.”

“You did, but this is the first day of the regular semester and I thought…you might be.”

“Course not. What’s there to be nervous about?” He turned away from the mirror. Then he looked down at Vanik again. For a moment he said nothing, then the smile returned to his face, but this one was a little different. Very gentle and affectionate, rather than amused.

To Vanik’s surprise, Jim suddenly crouched down on his haunches until he was closer to Vanik’s own height.

“A little nervous about your first day at the new school, huh?”

Vanik swallowed heavily and nodded.

“You know you’re really smart, so that’s not it. Don’t think you’ll make any friends?”

“Well.” Vanik looked down toward his feet. “I am different than everyone else. They’ll all be fully human.”

“Now, I doubt that. A lot of families around here are in Starfleet or the Federation and come from everywhere. And you are different than anyone else. I’m different too.”

Vanik raised his gaze. “You are?”

“Sure. Everyone is unique. There’s not one of us that’s exactly the same and how great is that? You’re going to do fine, Vanik. You’ll see. And if you have any issues with anyone, you tell me, and I’ll come kick their as…butts.”

Vanik returned Jim’s smile. “They are kids. You can’t kick their butts, Jim.”

“Right.” Jim grinned. “Their parents then.”

“Okay. And if you have any trouble at the Academy I will kick their butts.”

“Deal.” Jim held out his palm and Vanik slapped it.

****

“Jim!”

Vanik’s uncle, Spock, watched as his nephew ran to Jim when they arrived to pick Vanik up from school as Sybok and Anoria had asked them to.

“Hey, kid. How’d it go?”

“It went great! You were right.”

“Right?” Spock asked with a questioning brow.

“There were lots of other students who were not fully human. Some weren’t even a tiny bit!”

“See?” Jim ruffled Vanik’s hair. “Who’s up for ice cream?”

“Me!”

Jim glanced at Spock. “Or you know, frozen non-dairy yogurt or whatever.”

Spock took Jim’s arm, showing his own amusement, though not to the extent his nephew did, and they walked away from Vanik’s school together.

Star Trek Day Flash

I didn’t think about writing anything for “Star Trek Day” September 8th until the night before so forgive me for this extremely rough short flash.

Spock hears the approach of Doctor McCoy, but he does not turn around. He suspects the doctor had been sent ahead to tell him the news about Spock’s husband. There is still so little they know to presume that he would not know. The instant he had been torn from the Enterprise Spock knew.

“Spock.”

McCoy’s voice is rough, hoarse, torn asunder with grief. Spock manages not to wince.

Spock’s silence encourages the doctor to continue though that was not Spock’s intention.

“Jim…”

Spock closes his eyes from the sight of the city lights outside their…his…apartment window. He straightens though he does not turn around.

“I know, Leonard.”

“Spock, Jim…”

“I know,” Spock says again.

“How? Who told you?” There are tears in McCoy’s voice. It sounds thick and unsteady.

“No one.”

“Then…”

He wants to sigh, but knows it is inappropriate under the circumstances. “The bond severed upon his–demise.”

Silence greets his words and though Spock still does not turn around it seems like an uneasy, stunned silence. Perhaps he imagines it. He is aware that McCoy does not fully understand the connection he has–had–with Jim.

“I’m sorry.”

So is Spock but he cannot make the words form let alone have them fall from his lips. He manages not to show that he is shaking. Or at least he believes he does.

“What do you need?”

“To be alone.”

McCoy is quiet though Spock knows he has not left. Then there is a hand placed on his shoulder and Spock cannot stop the flinch. Doesn’t try.

“I’ll leave you be then.” A long pause. “For now.”

He hears the apartment door open and close and then the fading of McCoy’s footsteps as he walks away to leave Spock alone.

Spock clenches his fists and curses Jim for dying.

I am soooooo sorry for this.

Flash Fic, September 07, 202

“If you’ll all please bring up the information I asked you to research for today’s lesson on quadrotriticale, we can get started.”

The blue-eyed sandy haired human professor standing in front of the class was definitely new, Spock realized.

And absurdly attractive.

The entire class was staring at him and not at all the coursework.

Spock among them.

He glanced at the name written on the board in old-fashioned chalk.

James T. Kirk.

“Excuse me!” a student Spock knew was called Pavel Chekov yelled out to get the instructor’s attention.

“Yes?”

“Vhat happened to Professor Lansing? The old guy.”

Kirk shrugged. “He got sick so I’m taking over this class for the semester. Problems?”

“No, no.”

“Good, then we can get started.”

Kirk turned his back on the class to start some sort of slide program. Which seemed to fill the other students with relief as they turned to their PADDs.

Spock did not. His gaze zeroed in on…

Kirk turned around and suddenly narrowed his eyes as he looked toward Spock, who felt himself turn green with embarrassment. He dropped his PADD.

“What’s the matter with you?” Nyota hissed from beside him.

“Nothing,” Spock murmured.

But he could feel her eyes on him, and Spock swore everyone’s eyes were on him. That he had somehow been caught ogling the instructor’s ass.

When the class ended, Spock barely recalled what was said, and he scrambled to get up and out of the class. He made it to the door.

“Cadet Spock.”

Spock froze. He exchanged a look with a smirking Nyota, and he once more felt his cheeks go warm.

He waited until all the others turned away and left before facing Kirk.

“I…”

Kirk was smiling. He walked up to Spock and opened his arms.

“It’s been way too long.”

Spock went into his arms and closed his around Kirk’s. “Indeed. I-I didn’t know you were…”

“I know. It was a surprise.”

Their lips met and Spock murmured against that precious mouth. “It was. A very pleasant one.”

Kirk’s hand move up to come his cheek. “Hey. Were you staring at my ass?”

Flash Fic, September 02, 2020

And so we begin the month of Starfleet Academy Flashes

“What are you doing anyway?” Bones asked Jim as he poured himself coffee in their Starfleet Academy dorm room.

Jim was lying on his bunk, stomach down, swiping his finger across the PADD he held.

“Looking through the digital announcement boards.”

“For?”

“The advertisements for tutors.”

“Huh? What for? You want some coffee?”

“Yeah pour me some and leave it on the table. Um, you know, curiosity.”

“Jim, you are like the last guy who needs a tutor. What’s going on?”

Jim smiled a little. “Well, uh, I may have heard that a certain Vulcan professor was going to offer his services tutoring physics and I thought…”

“Jim, he’s going to know immediately it’s a scam.”

“I’m not scamming him, Bones.”

Bones sighed. “Okay, but trying to…what…get with him? Probably unsuccessfully.”

“Hey!” Jim got up from the bed and went to fetch the coffee bones gave him. “I’m a catch.”

“Well…”

“I am.”

Bones smirked. “What’s he going to tutor you in? Vulcan sexual practices?”

“I wish. As it happens, I found his post about tutoring so I’m going to see him this afternoon.”

“Bad idea.”

“You suck.” Jim threw a ball at him.

****

Spock looked up from the Kobayashi Maru program he was studying at the approaching footsteps. He was somewhat surprised to see Cadet James Kirk standing in front of him. He’d had Cadet Kirk in a battle simulation class the prior year. Kirk had excelled.

“Cadet.”

“Hi Professor. I saw your advertisement about tutoring.”

Spock leaned back. “I don’t really require a second tutor to assist me. So far only two students have applied, Nyota Uhura and Rupert Smiley. If those are the only two—”

“No,” Cadet Kirk interrupted. “Well, first, of course she did. But what I meant was…I’d like you to tutor me. If you would.”

Spock arched a brow. Leaned back further and studied Cadet Kirk. “You are a brilliant student. You do not need such tutelage.”

Kirk pursed his lips. “All right, maybe, but…” He laughed then. “The truth is, I like you.”

Spock felt warm at these words. Cadet Kirk was very attractive and intelligent and as Spock preferred males…

“Dinner this evening?”

Jim smiled brightly. “You bet.” Then he leaned in close. “Perhaps there’s something you can teach me after all.”

“Certainly how to pick up Vulcans is top of that list,” Spock said with some amusement.

Jim pulled back, eyes wide, but then he laughed. “Touché. Yeah, okay. So maybe I wasn’t exactly smooth here but…”

“You were smooth enough. I will pick you up at seven…cadet.”

“I’ll be ready, Professor.”

Flash Fic, August 31, 2020

Here is my last “Summer” themed August flash. This is an alternate beginning to Star Trek 2009

“So…summer’s just about over.”

Spock eyed the blue-eyed blond haired man he’d spent most of the Earth’s summer months with. Tomorrow, Spock would be returning to San Francisco and his teaching position at Starfleet Academy.

James Kirk.

Just that day they’d lounged in bed at Jim’s farmhouse.

“Yes. Unfortunately, I must depart in the morning.”

“Yeah.” Jim licked his lips. “I know.”

Now Jim wanted to go to this “dive bar” as he called it. Spock recognized several Starfleet Academy recruits. A subject Jim had not wished to discuss with Spock. Something about his father and his mother.

Still it meant he might not see Jim again. Going to a bar their last night together was not his idea of a good time.

He put his hand on Jim’s arm. “I see Captain Pike. I would like to have a word with him. I will be in shortly.”

“Okay, gotcha. Want me to order you something?”

“Tea if they have it.”

Jim smiled and nodded and went inside.

****

Spock was just finishing up speaking with Captain Pike when someone came out from the bar. It was very loud inside.

“There’s a fight going on,” the man said.

Pike frowned. “A fight? What sort of fight?”

“A bunch of Starfleet dudes are beating the crap out of a guy in civilian clothes. I don’t know. He was being friendly to a woman and they went berserk. You may want to go in there if they’re with you. They’re giving that guy a pretty bad time.”

Spock knew Jim was somehow involved.

Pike and Spock rushed inside and sure enough the big brut called Hendorff was pummeling Jim in the face.

Pike whistled loudly and the fight abruptly stopped.

Spock moved forward and pushed Hendorff aside as he let Jim fall onto the pool table.

Pike moved toward Jim. “You all right, son?”

“You can whistle really loud,” Jim said, sounding pretty out of it.

Spock glared at Hendorff and the others. “You will be on report. This is not conduct becoming to a Starfleet cadet. Wait outside.”

They all rushed out.

Spock met the uncertain gaze of Nyota Uhura, who he knew from his recruitment of cadets. Spock helped Jim to straighten from the pool table.

“Do you need medical attention, Jim?”

Blood was pouring from Jim’s nose.

“No. No. I’m all right.”

“Actually, I’ll take care of Jim here, Spock. I’d like to have a few words with him,” Pike said, taking over holding Jim up. “Why don’t you take care of those recruits outside?”

Spock nodded. “Very well.” He squeezed Jim’s arm very gently. “I will be right outside.”

Jim smiled a little, though it was ghastly with the blood. “Okay. I’ll be okay.”

Spock turned to Uhura. ”Nyota, please come with me.”

She followed him outside the bar.

Uhura fidgeted. “That guy…you know him?”

“Yes. We have been engaged in a relationship since our arrival in Riverside.”

She blinked. “Oh.”

“I accompanied him to the bar but was delayed in entry. Will you explain what started the melee?”

“Well. Um. He approached me at the bar and offered to buy me a drink. I guess I thought he was hitting on me or whatever but maybe he was just being friendly. Anyway, those guys thought he was bothering me and even though I told them I could handle your friend, they got all macho and started a fight.”

“I see.”

“Your, uh, your friend kind of encouraged it a little by being sarcastic to them, but they were mostly at fault. I tried to get them to stop but then…”

“Then?” Spock prompted.

“One of them threw Kirk into me and he grasped my body, my breasts, and I got mad and threw him right back into them where they got even more crazy and started beating him.” She winced. “I’m sorry, Spock. I didn’t know he was your boyfriend or anything.”

“I suggest you leave here and be prepared to be on the shuttle to San Francisco first thing in the morning.”

“Will I be on report?”

“No. Though none of the circumstances were ideal, you do not appear to have taken part in the assault of the civilian, James Kirk. I trust you will conform yourself appropriately from now forward.”

“Yes. Yes. I will. Thank you, Spock. And I’m sorry about Kirk.” She hurried off and Spock turned his attention to the offenders.

****

Spock joined Jim in bed much later that night. “You are sure you are all right, Jim?”

“Yeah. Just a bit bruised. Nose hurts. But nothing broken.”

“I am sorry I wasn’t in there to stop it.”

Jim laughed. “It’s okay, Spock. They were looking for a fight. I was just stupid enough to egg them on.”

“What did Captain Pike have to say?” Spock said, as he leaned in to kiss the corner of Jim’s mouth.

“He wants me to enlist in Starfleet.”

Spock drew back, surprised. “And will you?”

Jim’s eyes were sparkling as he smiled. “What do you think?”

Flash Fic, August 28, 2020

Some OMS TOS

Spock found Jim sitting on the porch of his Riverside farmhouse at nearly eight-thirty at night. The sun was setting, as it was August, and nearly the end of their leave. Time to return to San Francisco and HQ soon enough. He was aware that Jim did not really look forward to it as he once did. They were older now and Jim spoke of retirement more than he used to.

Jim gave him a weary smile.

“Finish the dishes? Sorry, I meant to go in.”

Spock lowered himself into a chair beside his husband.

“It is fine. I did not mind doing it.”

Jim nodded, staring out into the yard. “Would you mind so much if we came here to live after we retire?”

Spock was aware that for Jim, Riverside was home. Outside of the Enterprise, which was no longer theirs to call it that way. For Spock, wherever Jim was, was home. It had taken him a long time to discover this, to admit to it, too long. But now he knew, now he accepted.

“I would offer no objections.”

Jim smiled. “Good. I like the idea of us living here, arguing over whose going to do the dishes that night…”

“I would not argue. I would do them willingly.”

“I know. But you get what I mean.” Jim continued to smile faintly, then he looked from the yard to Spock. “Or we could retire to Vulcan, if you’d rather.”

Spock did not say it, but he knew, there would be plenty of time, likely, for him to live on Vulcan once Jim passed away. Unless some odd tragedy occurred, Spock would outlive Jim by a good many years. It was not outside the realm of possibility, of course. After all, Spock had died once already.

“No, living here will be acceptable,” Spock replied. He put his hand out toward Jim who met Spock’s hand with his own, their fingers touching as they did, as once, long ago, when Spock’s mother still lived, she did with Sarek.

“I love summer,” Jim spoke after a few minutes. “Summer nights especially. Out here, anyway. You can see stars for miles and miles around. This…this I grew up with.”

“And made you wish to live among those very stars.”

Jim nodded. “Yep. Never imagined then that I’d meet someone like you, and you’d change every aspect of my life.”

Spock thought about all those years in the past when last he’d seen Michael and her words to him.

 “As you have changed mine.”

Flash Fic, August 26, 2020

Happy 40th to CP. Just a little something.

“How about a cruise?”

Zach shook his head. “No. Just a few years ago there was all that pandemic stuff.”

Chris frowned. “I’ve never been. Thought it might be fun.”

“Uh-uh. Maybe in another five years.”

Chris sighed. “Hawaii.”

“That’s nice but I went there with M—”

“Forget it,” Chris said quickly. “Australia?”

“Really long flight.”

“Damn it, Zach, where do you want to go then?”

Zach reached for and grabbed Chris’ hand to pull him close. He put his hands on Chris’ hips then. “You want a crazy idea?”

“You’ve shot down every one of mine, so I’d love to hear what you suggest for our summer vacation.”

“A staycation.”

Chris rolled his eyes. “What?”

“We have the pool, the jacuzzi, the tennis courts. Even a gym. We disconnect from the world, no phones, no internet, no social media. Just you and me for your birthday and the natural order of things. Well for people with a pool and a spa, anyway.”

Chris put down the brochures. “That’s starting to sound okay.”

“Of course it does. We can barbecue, lie out by the pool. If it gets too hot, we move inside and do each other.”

Chris laughed. “Okay, okay, you’ve convinced me. You always do.”

Zach smiled and kissed him. “I always do.”

“What’s going on, Jim?”

Jim opened his mouth to answer McCoy, but Spock beat him to it.

“We were out by the ocean of this planet—”

“Spock.”

Spock touched Jim’s hand. “And Jim decided he wished to surf.”

McCoy held up his hands. “Say no more. He biffed, right? Where’d you hit your head, Jim?”

“I…”

“He did not hit his head. He became overcome.”

Jim closed his mouth and gave Spock a look.

“Overcome?” McCoy frowned, holding up his tricorder.

“Faint. Heart racing at a rapid pace. Broke out into a sweat. Turned very pale.”

“Hmm. Jim, what did it feel like?”

“It was very hot out,” Spock replied. “He stated he felt nauseated and had a headache.”

“Is that right, Jim?”

Jim opened his mouth.

“His vitals are a bit off,” McCoy said. “When was the last time you ate something, Jim?”

“Not since last night at dinner. And then it was just a small salad.”

McCoy looked at Spock. “Unable to speak is he?”

“I can speak,” Jim said.

“Chest pain?”

“No. Just the heart racing.”

McCoy shoved a hypo into Jim’s neck. “You’re starting to return to normal. Probably a combination of things.”

“Such as?” Spock asked.

“Heat exhaustion, low blood sugar from lack of food, and a panic attack.”

“Uh.”

McCoy shook his head. “Go back to your hotel and rest. REST. And eat. And stay cool. And eat.” McCoy pointed at Spock. “You make sure. And calm down, Jim.”

“I can leave?”

“Yes.”

Spock helped Jim off the table and then escorted him out of the room and outside where they were having shore leave. Their hotel was only a short distance away from where McCoy had set up to examine Jim.

“What were you panicked about, ashayam?”

“Um. Well. I guess maybe it has been a while since I tried surfing and the waves were more than I anticipated.”

Spock could see that his mate was embarrassed. “Jim, you do not have to show off for me.”

“I know.”

“I hope that you do. For the rest of today, you will sit in our room and I will pamper you, feed you,  and make sure you do not overdo anything.”

“I don’t need…you know what? Yes.” Jim sagged against Spock. “I’d love that. I need that. And God, thank you, for your love.”

“Always.”
