Jim opened his door to a serious looking Spock.

Well, all right, he always looked serious. But this was more serious than usual. Er, Jim supposed.

“Yeah?”

“May I come in?”

It was on the tip of his tongue to say ‘go take a flying leap’ but of course what he actually did was stand back to let Spock inside.

He wore his all black professor’s uniform and it should not look as hot as it did. As he did. Obviously.

Jim had just take a shower and when the doorbell rang, he’d only bothered to pull on a pair of shorts he’d had since he was just out of high school. They weren’t in the best shape. He’d slung a towel around his neck and his hair still dripped down on to it.

“I have come to…” Spock stopped, seeming at a loss for words.

Jim didn’t bother to prompt him.

“I am aware that I am arrogant, coldly unfeeling, and-and bitchy as you said.”

Spock had struggled with that last part. Jim nearly smiled, but this was no laughing matter, after all.

“But…if there is anyone in this universe that I am not coldly unfeeling toward it is you.” Spock paused. “I am not certain I can control the arrogant part. It is difficult to change what I have always been.”

Jim did allow the tiniest bit of the corners of him mouth to upturn. “Admittedly you have reason to be arrogant.”

“Yes.” Spock looked startled. “I mean, no. I do not. As for b-bitchy, well—”

“Spock, I think, somewhere in there is an apology. Right?”

Spock straightened. “Yes, exactly.”

“And I’m guessing this is your way of saying you don’t want things to end between us.”

“Definitely not.” Spock took a step forward. “I feel a level affection for you unmatched to anyone else.”

Jim did smile then. “That’s about as close to a declaration of love as I’m going to get from you, I’m guessing.”

“Jim—”

Jim laughed and pulled Spock close. “You’ve convinced me. I accept your unique apology.”

Spock leaned into his arms. “I am…gratified.”

Flash Fic, September 14, 2021

“What’s that?”

Jim smiled into the camera and clicked the button. “My new communication device.”

Bones snorted. “Okay, I can kinda see that. What’s wrong with your old one?”

“You know I keep dropping it.”

“Right.”

“I, uh, I dropped it in the toilet. Turns out it’s not waterproof,” Jim said sheepishly.

Bones gave him a look. “Ya think? But I gotta ask. What the hell are you doing?”

“Taking a selfie to send to the cute guy I want to date of course.”

“Of course. Is it working?”

Jim flashed him a smile. “Ask him yourself.”

“Ask who–“

“Good afternoon Doctor.”

Bones turned around. “Professor Spock. Should have known. “I’m surprised you didn’t send him selfies of your–“

“Bones!” Jim laughed. Grinned at Spock. “Besides, Spock already knows what that looks like.”

“I have a class. You two just…leave me alone.” Bones shook his head and hurried away.

Jim linked his arm with Spock’s. “Shall we?”

“Indeed.”

Just a fun little silly extra as my iPhone 12 mini arrived today. No more bulging phone! Yipee!

Flash Fic, September 13, 2021

Spock noticed Cadet Kirk’s absence from his class immediately. Of course he did. Kirk was his brightest student. It was nearly impossible not to notice him when he was there, as Spock certainly had from dat one, and now his empty seat definitely caught his attention.

But he was not alarmed. There were lots of reasons Kirk would not have attended the class and students often were absent.

When the course ended, however, he received notice on his Academy PADD that Cadet Kirk had withdrawn from the class.

Spock frowned. He was well aware that Kirk needed the class for his curriculum.

He had an appointment to meet a friend for tea, but he had no choice now but to postpone that meeting to a future date. He quickly sent the message and left the campus to seek out Cadet Kirk.

Kirk…Jim lived at a small apartment building a block from campus. He had explained to Spock that the apartment belonged to his mother’s sister, and she had allowed him to live there instead of him having to stay in a dorm.

Spock had been there recently. The night before in fact.

Nothing seemed out of the ordinary when he arrived, so he knocked softly.

Only a moment later, Jim appeared at the door, opening it. He wore his red cadet’s uniform. He smiled.

“Hey.”

Spock frowned slightly. “Is everything all right?”

“Sure. Come in.” Jim seized his arm and pulled Spock inside the apartment. To Spock’s surprise, Jim pulled him into a passionate kiss, which admittedly confused him further. When Jim pulled away, he seemed as puzzled as Spock. “What’s wrong?”

“I came to inquire that of you. You did not attend class today and then you withdrew.”

For a moment, Jim stared at him. Then he smiled slightly. “Last night. What did it mean to you?”

“I do not understand.”

“Yeah, I’m beginning to get that. Spock, last night, it was amazing. More than I could have hoped for, and I guess, it was more than a one-night stand, right? I thought it was.”

Spock tilted his head. “Yes, of course.”

“Good. I’m surprised you don’t know this, but sleeping with your student is against regulations.”

Spock blinked and stared at him. He still had his arms around Jim and Jim was still clutching him. Neither of them made a move away, Spock had no desire to.

“I…had not yet thought of that.”

Jim grinned. “Last night really knocked you off your axis, huh?”

“Clearly. Then you withdrew from class for that reason.”

“Yep. Because I intend to, you know, keep sleeping with you, Professor. As often as possible.” Jim paused to give Spock a saucy look. “In fact, we should be doing that right now.”

Spock had to admit the idea had merit. But first. “Jim, you need that course for your command curriculum.”

“I know that. I’ve already talked with my academic advisor, and I can take it next semester with Lewiston.” Jim leaned in to kiss him.  “See, I’ve thought of everything.”

“Mm.” Spock gave himself to the kiss. “You are clearly more with it than I.”

Jim laughed against his lips. “Clearly. I’ll take your lack of clarity as a compliment that I really knocked your socks off.”

Human idioms. Spock shook his head. “Quite so. In that case, as to your suggestion, we should indeed, be sleeping together this instant. Without the sleep part, though.”

“Now you’re speaking my language.” Jim reached beyond Spock to lock the apartment door. “Come, professor. Why don’t you get this cadet uniform off me?”

“My pleasure, Cadet Kirk. My pleasure.”

Flash Fic, September 10, 2021

Spock opened the door of his apartment to the persistent knock. Standing there was a smiling Nyota. He could see she held a paper bag in her hand.

“Good morning,” she called out cheerfully.

“Did we have plans to meet?” Spock asked.

“No, no. But I was going by that bakery that sells those pastries you like and I just couldn’t resist getting them and coming over. I thought you could make us a pot of tea with them.”

Spock glanced toward the bedroom.

Nyota’s smile widened and before Spock could stop her, she pushed her way inside the apartment.

He opened his mouth.

“Hey Spock, I can’t find any towels. Where…”

Jim had just come out of the bedroom, wearing Spock’s bathrobe. His hair was standing on end and there were clearly marks on the exposed areas of his chest. His lips looked still swollen from Spock’s abundant kisses.

Jim blinked. “Uh, sorry, didn’t mean to—”

“The bath towels are in the cabinet in the bedroom closet,” Spock murmured.

He smiled a little. “Thanks.” He went back into the bedroom.

Nyota stood beside Spock, arms now folded across her chest, one hand dangling the paper bag. “Well.”

“Nyota, I do…apologize. As you can see, I will be unable to make breakfast.”

She bit her lip. “Was I wrong? I thought we were seeing each other.”

“You were not wrong, entirely, no. But my…interests have changed. I am sorry. It was my intention to see you soon to advise you of the change in my relationship with Cadet Kirk.”

“I see. So, uh, things are serious between you?”

“Yes. I am sorry, Nyota. It was not my intention to mislead you or hurt you. I have enjoyed our interactions, and think of you fondly as a friend. My romantic interest, however, lies with Jim.”

She made a face, but then sighed. “Okay. I mean, to be honest, when we first met I thought maybe you were gay.” She thrust the bag at him. “I got these for you so you may as well have them.”

“Nyota—”

“I know. We’ll talk soon, Spock. In the meantime, I think I need to go lick my wounds a bit.” She leaned over and kissed his cheek. “Bye, Spock.”

And then she was letting herself out of the door of his apartment.

When Spock turned back, Jim stood in the door of Spock’s bedroom, still wearing the bathrobe and holding a towel.

“Everything okay?”

“Everything is fine, Jim.”

Jim smiled a bit quizzically. “What was that about?”

“I am afraid Nyota thought the two of us were more than just friends.”

“You and me or you and her?”

Spock’s lips quirked. “Me and her. I think she is now well aware that you and I are more than friends.”

“I didn’t come out like that on purpose. Honest.”

Spock went to him and pulled him close, wrapping his arms around him. “It does not matter in the end, Jim. She is aware now.” He kissed Jim. “As am I.”

Jim grinned. “Want to share the shower with me, Professor?”

And so Spock said the words that started this. “I am amenable.”

Flash Fic, September 08, 2021

This is a continuation of the August 18th flash where Jim had marks on his neck.

“Who are you smiling at?” Bones demanded.

Jim let the smile slip from his face and turned his gaze back to Bones. “No one.”

“Oh sure. I’ve seen that smile. It’s your secret we’re going to sleep together later face.”

He laughed. “You’re crazy.”

“This is the same person who gave you the marks all over your neck.” Bones narrowed his eyes and looked around the cafeteria. “I don’t see him.”

“Bones—”

“See who, doctor?”

Jim Jumped as Spock appeared at their table. “Uh. Hi Professor.”

“Cadet,” Spock murmured.

“Idiots,” Bones said much louder.

Jim rolled his eyes. “Would you like to join us?”

Spock nodded and sat directly beside Jim.

Bones grimaced. “How’s that logical philosophy going, Spock?”

“Logical philosophy?”

“Uh-huh. That class Jim’s taking with you.”

Spock eyed Jim, who merely smiled. “He is a perfect student.”

“Oh, I’ll just bet,” Bones said with a snort. “He’s definitely getting good marks…ouch! Damn it, Jim. Now my shin is killing me.”

“Hypo yourself.”

“Why don’t you go—” Bones stopped himself and sighed. “Oh forget it. I’ve lost my appetite. Enjoy your…uh…lunch.”

Jim watched his friend skedaddle. He shook his head.

“I owe you an apology, Jim.”

Jim smiled quizzically at Spock. “Yeah?”

“About the doctor. You are correct. He is quite…odd.”

He laughed again. “Yeah, you got that right. And I don’t have a class the rest of the afternoon. What about you?”

“I too am finished for the day.”

Jim’s smile widened. “Then why are we still here instead of on the way to your apartment?”

“That is an excellent question. Let us rectify that.”

Jim winked and they rose from their seats, heading out of the cafeteria and off to their logical philosophy course for that extra credit Jim definitely needed.

Happy Labor Day – USA

“Is this chair taken?”

The hot Vulcan glanced at Jim, his expression blank, yet at the same time hostile. Not exactly a great start.

“That question makes no sense as you can clearly see the chair is there.”

“Funny.”

“I am not.”

Jim tried again. “Is this seat occupied?”

“That question is likewise illogical considering you can see that it is empty.”

Jim counted to ten, then sighed. “Okay, seriously, you’re hot but you aren’t worth all this, so I’ll find someplace else to sit. Thanks.”

He went to turn away when the Vulcan’s voice stopped him.

“If your purpose was to inquire if you may occupy the chair yourself, the answer is yes.”

Jim hesitated only a moment before sitting across from him.   “Jim Kirk.”

“I am aware. Your reputation precedes you. Spock.”

Jim smiled. “My reputation huh? Don’t believe everything you hear.”

Spock simply stared at him.

“Look. I don’t see the point of a lot of small talk, so I’ll get right to it. I’m interested in sleeping with you.”

“I have a class in ten minutes,” Spock replied.

Jim laughed. “Are you always so literal? Yeah, I bet you are. Never mind. I don’t mean this minute or in ten minutes, but soon.” He thought about it, so he said, “And when I say sleep I mean…”

“Yes,” Spock murmured. “I understand the colloquialism.” He paused. His expression never really changed from the sort of hostile blankness Jim initially received, and yet. “I am amenable.”

You are?”

Spock arched a brow. “Is that not the answer you are seeking?”

“Uh. Yeah. It is. I’m just…surprised.”

“I am certain you are used to paramours accepting your desire to sleep with them.”

Jim wasn’t sure about them, but he nodded, and licked his lips. “When?”

“I am done with classes for the day at 1800 hours. Be at my apartment at 1900 hours.” Spock rose then, quickly provided his address, and then left without another word.

Jim laughed again, shook his head, and guessed maybe this was his lucky day.

Flash Fic, September 03, 2021

“Listen.”

As a beginning it wasn’t his smoothest line.

But Spock, staring at him with those dark chocolate eyes, replied, “I’m listening.”

Jim looked out at the hallway, there was no one else there on this floor of the apartment building, but he still didn’t want to do this out here. Where Spock could slam the door in his stupid face.

“Can I come in?” He saw the hesitation there, briefly, on Spock’s face. “Please.”

Spock stepped back without a word and let Jim in. Jim was relieved when the door closed with him on the inside.

He could beat around the bush and ramble on about shit that didn’t matter. But he wasn’t going to do that. Not this time.

“I love you. I know I’ve never said it and I know I’ve done…all kinds of things that make you doubt me, make you doubt us, I get it. But I’ve never loved anyone until I met you. You make me a better person, because I want to be…for you. You inspire me. You know everything there is to know about me, even the bad things, and still…Spock. I love you. And I never want to be without you. Ever.”

He’d gotten it all out, he thought. He’d rehearsed it, but it hadn’t come out quite like he wanted it to. He hoped it would be enough anyway. That it wasn’t too late and he hadn’t screwed it all up.

“I…”

“Give me another chance.”

He stepped close to Spock, his eyes pleading.

Spock exhaled. “Very well.” He reached for Jim’s hand and held it, threading their fingers together. “Stay with me.”

Jim smiled, softly. “I’m definitely not going anywhere.”

And so Academy month begins

Recruitment

Starfleet Academy has set up some sort of recruitment center in an auditorium on campus. Spock was required to be there, though, honestly he was not very interested. But being the head of the science department and even having programmed some of the Academy’s aptitude tests, he was given no choice.

Very few stopped by his area for science study. He noticed many went to engineering or security or, of course, command. He got an occasion medical doctor. Earlier that day one such man from Georgia had stopped by to scowl at Spock. Spock scowled back.

So Spock was surprised when a young, blond human stopped in front of the material for science. He stood before the computer and swiped left and right. From where Spock stood at the side, he could see the young man was extraordinarily good looking by any standards of any humanoids. He his long lashes that fell over very blue eyes.

Spock moved away from his hidden spot and approached.

“May I help you?”

The human flashed Spock a brilliant smile, showing little rabbit teeth that Spock somehow found quite appealing.

“Hi, Jim Kirk.”

The name brought forth a memory.

“Are you related to George Kirk of the USS Kelvin.”

The smile didn’t slip. “That’s right. He was my dad. I never knew him then.”

“Then you are the child that was born during the attack?”

“Well. Not a child anymore, obviously. But yes. You’re Professor Spock, right?”

“Yes. Surely you aren’t interested in studying science.”

Jim shrugged. “You’d be surprised. I was thinking of minoring in it. Astrophysics. I’ll be concentrating on command, of course, but I want as much education as I can get. I think that will help with command.” He grinned. “Maybe I’ll take the engineering courses too.”

“That would put a lot of burden on your shoulders to complete such an expanded course of learning.”

“Yeah, sure, but I’m up for the challenge.”

Spock inclined his head. “Very well then.”

“Speaking of challenges, when you’re done here later this afternoon how’d you like to grab some vegetarian food with me. I know a great place on fifth.”

Spock knew the place on fifth and it was indeed a superior place in which to dine. Plus, he could hardly turn down an invitation from such an attractive human. At this point, Jim was not his student or even in the science department, therefore, he wasn’t violating any rules either stated or implied.

“Well?” Jim asked. “Should I come by here when this is over?”

“I would like that, yes.”

“Fantastic. See you then.”

And as Jim Kirk moved on toward engineering, Spock realized that his own mood was much improved. He picked up his communicator and texted his friend.

Sorry, Nyota. I will not be able to join you for dinner. Something came up.

Flash Fic, August 30, 2021

This one might be a bit sad to some. This concludes August

George Kirk was pretty sure he had everything ready to leave. He’d checked and double-checked. His wife, Winona, was avoiding him. He knew why. She did and didn’t want to go. He understood and felt the same way.

Prior to this day, they’d had that conversation.

“You don’t have to come, sweetheart. You can be reassigned to a place in San Francisco. Then Sam can stay with you while I’m on the Kelvin.”

“I know,” she said softly. “I know that’s true. But this assignment is short. It’ll mean so much to both our careers. After the baby’s born, I’ll be back here anyway.” She’d rested her hand on her still flat stomach.

Their second child. They’d decided not to learn what they were having this time. With George Samuel, they had decided to find out. It had been fun, but this time, they’d decided to make it a surprise. George thought she probably wanted a little girl, but he’d be happy with either.

“Son.”

George turned to his father, Tiberius Kirk. He was looking older than he’d ever looked before to George. That concerned him some. He worked hard on the Riverside farm and he had no one to help him these days.

“You okay, Dad?”

“Sure, sure. You ready to go?”

“I think so. You get my boy settled in?”

Sam was going to stay with George’s parents until Winona returned to Earth after her Kelvin assignment. Children didn’t belong on a starship. Eventually Winona would settle back here with both their children and George would continue on the Kelvin. George was going to be First Officer.

“Yep. He’ll be fine. Probably ought to say your goodbye though. I’ll then drive you two to the shuttlebay while Mom stays with Sam.”

“Right. Okay.”

George gave his Dad’s shoulder a squeeze, then went over to where his mother waited with little Sam, who barely knew how to walk. He probably would never remember his parents’ absence. That gave George some comfort.

He first hugged his mom, who wrapped her arms tight around him.

He smiled when she released him. “Think Dad’s all right?”

“He was complaining about some aches and pains. He’s not a young man anymore, George. I expect you’ll know what that’s like yourself one day.”

He laughed. “Yeah. But not for a long long time, Mom. I’m not even thirty.”

She reached up to ruffle his hair. “Don’t I know it. Never mind. Your son will be fine here. He’s a sweet boy and you’ll both be back with him before you know it.”

George nodded and dropped to his haunches to hug and say goodbye to his son. “Okay, buddy, Daddy has to go. Daddy and Mommy.”

“Go?” His fat little bottom lip trembled.

“Yeah for work. But we’ll be back. Mommy first before you know it. And you’ll have a little brother or sister.”

Sam didn’t seem too sure about it and his eyes were getting wet.

“Hey.” Georg hugged him. “You’re going to be fine. Grandma and Grandpa will take good care if you.”

“K.”

“Daddy loves you. So much. And I will be back. I promise.”

He hugged his son again and then waited while Winona did too, openly sobbing.

It was too late for her to stay behind, they both knew it, but George made the suggestion anyway when she joined him, still wiping her eyes.

“You could—”

She shook her head. “Let’s just go.”

He smiled and leaned over to kiss her forehead. “It’ll be all right, Win. This is going to be great for our family.”

She smiled back. “I know. Let’s go before I run back to him.”

George turned to go.

“Daddy!”

Giving her hand a squeeze, George turned back just as little Sam waddled over to him on unsteady legs and hugged George’s legs. He felt tears sting his own eyes. This was all much harder than he had expected. He scooped Sam up, kissed his cheek and then handed him to his mom, quickly leaving.

****

Sam held onto his two-year-old brother’s hand while Mama talked to Grandma. He could sort of hear what she was saying.

“I can’t handle taking care of them right now. I don’t know what else to do. So if I could just leave them here with you—”

“Of course you can.”

“Just for a short time until I can get my act together. It’s been so hard without George and—”

“Yes, I know. I’ll take care of those boys.”

“I know you just lost Tiberius but—”

“No, no. You just do what you need to do, Winona, honey. Sam and Jimmy are safe with me.”

Sam watched as Mama glanced their way. She had left bags with their things next to Grandma. She wiped her eyes and then instead of coming back to Sam and Jim, she hurried away from the farmhouse.

“Mama,” Jim whined.

Grandma came over to them with a smile. “Come on in, boys. We’re going to have a wonderful time together. Don’t you worry. And your Mama will be back real soon. Before you know it.”

Sam glanced at Jim as Grandma began to walk toward their bags. “Don’t believe it, Jimmy.  They always say that.”

He tightened his hold on Jim’s hand and followed after Grandma.

****

“You’ll be staying with me and Frank now.”

Sam didn’t look away from his grandmother’s grave. She was buried next to grandfather. There was no grave for George Kirk, Sam’s dad. There had been nothing left to bury.

His mom had come with a man who attempted to smile at them like he was okay, but Sam didn’t buy it. There was something in Frank’s eyes Sam just didn’t trust.

“Sam, come on. Frank is waiting over there with your brother.”

“What about this place?” Sam asked.

“We’ll sell it. Frank has his own farm. We don’t need this old place. It needs a bunch of repairs anyway. Now stop stalling and let’s go.”

Sam bent down and put a rose on his grandmother’s grave. This time there was no one to say they’d be back before Sam knew it.

****

“Why are you leaving?”

Sam almost wavered at the pained look on brother’s face. Almost. But he couldn’t stand to live there one more day. His mom was gone again. On some assignment for Starfleet. And they were stuck with Frank. Sam hated Frank.

“Because I can’t be a Kirk in this house.”

“Please. Please don’t go.”

Sam swallowed. Looked off into the distance, beyond where Frank stood, glaring at them. He looked back at Jim. “I’ll be back before you know it.”

Jim stared at him. Then he looked down at the ground and nodded, as Sam moved away, to leave Riverside behind.

****

Jim shared a look with Spock. Pursed his lips, and then approached the little boy sitting on the biobed, his small legs dangling off the side. He had strawberry blond hair and a smattering of freckles across his nose and cheeks.

“Hi,” Jim said softly.

“Hello,” he said in a small voice.

“Are you feeling better, Peter?”

“Uh-huh. Not in pain anymore.”

Jim smiled. “That’s good. Listen, uh, your dad—”

“I know he’s not coming back,” Peter said. “They never come back.”

Jim felt a lump form in his throat. He felt Spock’s hand on the small of his back and he sent thanks through their bond.

“He isn’t coming back, you’re right. And your mom, too.”

Peter nodded. “I’m-I’m an orphan.”

“Me too.”

Peter looked up at Jim, surprised. “You are?”

“Yes. My dad has been…gone since I was born. I never knew him. My mom, your grandma, died last summer.” Jim glanced at Spock. “Spock’s mom is gone too. But he still has his dad.”

Peter looked at Spock, then back to Jim. “Who will take care of me? Where will I go?”

Jim let out a steady breath. “You aren’t going anywhere.”

“Huh?”

“You’re going to live here with me and Spock. On the Enterprise. We’ll take care of you.”

“You, Uncle Jim?”

“Yes,” Jim said. “It’s all arranged. Me, Spock, and the whole crew. We’re going to be your family and you’ll be ours.”

Peter seemed to think about this and then he nodded. “Uncle Jim?”

“Yes, Peter?”

“Can we go to the mess? I’m super hungry.”

Jim laughed and helped Peter off the biobed. “You bet. Spock and I are hungry too.”
