Ramblings of February 15, 2020

Hello my friends

Here are some flowers for you from our work campus

And here is the cheesecake we bought for last night from the store.

Cute right? The worst tasting cheesecake I’ve ever had. Worst. I love cheesecake. This was not it. I even had to check to make sure it wasn’t vegan. It was not. M thought it tasted like meat. Just awful.

Today my friend is throwing a February Friendsgiving. Turkey is on the menu as well as M’s tiramisu. Also wine. Naturally that.

The good news is I have finished all my flashes and scheduled them through April now. Including a birthday flash for Kris.

So now I can thoroughly immerse myself in the T’hy’la Bang story. Wish I could use the title here but I guess I’m not allowed to reveal any details or whatever. My first check-in is the end of this month and it says something about an “outline”. I do not outline. Ever. Nope. Won’t be this time either. So, yeah, we’ll see how THAT goes.

We are officially back in a drought as we have had a pretty dry winter. I knew it was coming. So that’s about it for now.

Talk soon!

Valentine’s Day Flash 2020

It was not the first time Spock had heard Jim cry out. Generally he was tempted to check on him, but he had never done so since he had not wished to invade his captain’s privacy.

At the moment, they were on a temporary ship, presented to Jim basically to get rid of him because he was driving everyone crazy on Yorktown constantly asking for updates on the Enterprise. It was still far enough out for completion that they decided to send Kirk out before he got too antsy.

The new ship, the Enterprise that was, would no longer have these shared bathrooms between the captain and his first. Spock had seen the layout and each had a large bathroom of their own. The captain had expressed delight over this. As well as the overall expanded quarters.

This temporary ship did not have that, though, and he shared a bathroom still with Kirk.

And there was a particular element to this cry that alarmed Spock to the point that he could not block it out. So, he crossed through their shared bathroom and into the captain’s quarters, uninvited.

Jim, who had obviously been in bed, was now up and pacing the sleeping area of the quarters. He wore only pajama bottoms, no shirt. His hair stood on end and the color of his face was nearly as white as the sheets on the bed.

“Spock?”

“I apologize for the intrusion, Captain, but you did sound distressed and I was quite concerned.”

He stopped his pacing to wrap his arms around himself. “No, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to bother you.”

“You did not.” Spock hesitated. “At least not in annoying fashion. I am disturbed only out of concern.”

Jim exhaled and gave Spock a very slight smile. “A really bad dream. Really bad.”

Spock knew that his captain was plagued by such things. He didn’t know how often.

“I tell myself it wasn’t real. But…”

“Would you care to talk about it?”

“Not really, no. It just…it was related to my time on…Tarsus.”

Spock stilled. He recalled that Jim had mentioned he’d been on Tarsus very very briefly when Spock had noticed his reaction to the name Kodos. Jim would not elaborate then. Nor apparently now.

“I grieve with thee.”

Jim ran a hand over his hair. “Thanks. Uh. Yeah.”

“Would you like to go back to bed? Perhaps I can assist you in sleeping?”

“No. No. Not at the moment. Was thinking about…eating.”

The soft, almost strangled way he said it made Spock’s heart squeeze in his side. His gaze went to a display of Valentine Cards on Jim’s desk. He’d forgotten what day it was. There were boxes of chocolates and cookies too.

Spock arched his brow.

Predictably, Jim noticed. He laughed. “Gifts from the crew.”

“Attempting to win your romantic favor?”

“Nah. I don’t think so. Just being nice, I guess.”

Spock stepped over to the gifts. One appeared to be a chocolate cheesecake. “Do you desire to eat some of this?”

Jim walked over. “Probably should since they went to all that trouble.”

“Have they been scanned?”

Jim gave him a wry smile. “You think my crew wants to poison me?”

“For known allergens to your person,” Spock said dryly.

“Oh.” Jim laughed. “No. Not for that. I’m sure it’s fine though.”

Spock was not. “I will scan them.”

“I really need a cup of coffee,” Jim said, moving off to the replicator. “You don’t really need to bother with that, Spock. In fact, why are you even here? Shouldn’t you be with Uhura?”

Pausing in the middle of scanning Jim’s gifts with a tricorder, Spock glanced at him. “Why would I be with Nyota?”

“Because it’s Valentine’s Day, Spock. Some lovers think that’s an important day.”

“Captain, Nyota and I ended our relationship before the events on Altamid.”

“Yeah. But, um, after you were injured and she was rescued, thanks to that necklace, I thought…you two seemed pretty cozy. Bones said you two were together at my party just last month.”

Spock put down his scanner. Shook his head. “Nyota and I remain on good terms as friends, but we have not reunited.”

“No?”

“There is no point to maintaining a relationship with someone when they love someone else.”

“Oh.” Jim nodded. He turned to get his coffee and then with it cradled in his hands, took a sip. “Who does she love then?”

Spock glanced down at all the Valentines on Jim’s desk. The cookies, the candy, the cheesecake, flowers. He wondered how one person could be that blind. But then he knew that Jim didn’t always have the love he should have. Spock hoped he was about to change that.

“I do not know,” Spock replied. “I do not wish to spend Valentine’s Day with her because I would rather spend it with who I am in love with.”

Jim took another sip of his coffee, oblivious to the last. “Yeah? Then why are you in here with me?”

Spock sighed. “I am spending it with the one I am in love with.”

Jim blinked. “Wait. What? What are you saying?”

“I love you.”

Jim set his coffee down and rushed at Spock. He grabbed Spock’s arms, his blue eyes wide with wonder. “Spock…”

“Jim. Be mine?”

My Funny Valentine

Star Trek: The Original Series

When Spock first got to the lounge, he didn’t see him. He stood in the front area, surveying the crowd, and trying to decide if he had the wrong place or if he’d somehow missed him.

He pulled out the handwritten slip of paper and read the words again.

My Valentine. Meet me at Louie’s at midnight. J.

He glanced at the lit up sign behind the bar Louie’s.

Spock turned, about to leave the noisy establishment, when the sound of someone singing a song drifted over the chattering crowd.

“My funny Valentine, Sweet comic Valentine, You make me smile with my heart.”

He frowned. It was badly sung, there was no doubt about that. Sort of off-key and more spoken than sung, if it came to that. But the voice…

Spock moved forward, pushing through the crowd toward the singer of the song.

As he cleared through, he saw him, sitting at the piano, playing it, and singing, or attempting as best he ever could.

Like Spock, Jim had changed out of his Starfleet uniform, and wore jeans, a flannel shirt, and a beat up bomber jacket. Just as Spock reached him, Jim continued with the song.

“Your looks are laughable, unphotographable, Yet you’re my favorite work of art.”

“Captain.”

Jim stopped playing and singing, smiling at Spock. “You made it.”

Spock blinked. “Do you…you think my looks are laughable?”

Jim’s eyes widened. “What? No. No.”

“You did call me your Valentine.”

Jim slid out off the piano bench and said something to a nearby man who took his place at the piano. An instant improvement, really.

Spock admired his captain more than anyone, but singing was not his forte, though he clearly enjoyed doing it.

Jim cupped Spock’s elbow and led him away from the piano and further into the establishment. Spock was surprised that he found them an empty, rather private table, but it also appeared to have been reserved for them, and therefore planned by his captain.

“You are my Valentine, Spock,” Jim said after they’d been seated. “Or I hope so. After everything…”

“Everything?”

Jim frowned. “The truth is, I’ve never felt about anyone the way I feel about you. But that song? Was just an old Earth song. There’s nothing about you I find laughable.”

He opened a bottle of wine and poured himself some, then held toward the empty glass in front of Spock.

“No, thank you.”

Jim smiled wryly. “Did I ever tell you about Carol?”

Spock took a moment to absorb the seemingly abrupt change in topic. “I do not believe so.”

“We met when I was at the Academy. It was never terribly serious. At least, I think, from her point of view. For a while I imagined myself in love. But it wasn’t. Not really. Anyway, she got pregnant.”

“You have a child?”

The smile turned wistful. “Somewhere. Carol didn’t tell me. Whatever we’d had was over. It was her friend who told me. I’m not sure Carol ever would have. I confronted her about it and she, well, she made it very clear that there was no future with me for her. Or for our child. She knew I was all about Starfleet and that wasn’t the life she wanted. Later I learned from that same friend that she had a son. David. I’ve never met or even seen him.”

“I am sorry,” Spock replied, though he wondered why Jim was sharing this with him.

“And…Ruth. I thought…well, what I thought didn’t turn out to be true. We had a great time, but that was it. There have been times I was certain I was absolutely completely in love, Spock. Edith. I really thought I was.”

Spock gripped the stem of the empty wine glass in front of him. “Were you not?”

Jim shook his head. “Not really. I’ve always fell in love fast. You’ve heard the idea of love at first sight, right?”

“Yes. An illogical notion.”

Jim chuckled and it warmed Spock. “Yeah. I’m the poster boy for that. Edith. Miramanee. Reyna. God, I don’t even know how many.”

Spock did. He knew. But he decided that information was irrelevant to whatever Jim wanted to say.

“In love in a second and gone just like that,” Jim said, musingly. He took a sip of his wine. “But…then there was you.”

“Me?”

“You. I fell in love with you over time, Spock. Long hours of just…admiring your brilliance, your integrity, your wit, your courage, your loyalty. It snuck up on me. You did. For a long time I didn’t even know that’s what it was. I convinced myself you were just the best friend anyone could ever have. Playing chess, having meals. Hell, we were dating, and I never even realized it.”

Spock thought about this. Were they? He shook his head.

“The point of all this rambling, and I swear there is a point, Mr. Spock, is that loving you has made me realize that none of the others were even close to what real love is. You are. I can’t get you out of my heart now even if I wanted to and I sure as hell don’t. The rest of that song says, ‘don’t change a hair for me, not if you care for me’, and there’s not a thing I’d ever want to change about you. You’re magnificent just the way you are.”

Spock opened his mouth to reply, but then Jim’s communicator blinked. He picked it up and grimaced. “So much for shore leave, Mr. Spock. Duty calls.”

Jim began to get up, but Spock stopped him with a hand on Jim’s hand. Jim looked at him quizzically.

“It is the same for me. You are my funny Valentine, too.”

His captain laughed. He touched his fingers to Spock’s. “Let’s go back to the ship.”

Spock nodded, rose, and followed his captain, as always.

I Know

Here I am again!

Got the update done for The Fling. Yay.

I am now diligently working on April flashes which I should have done in the next few days so that all flashes are done until May.

Leap story will be done this week and ready to go on February 29th. Then…the T’hy’la Bang story will be in very full swing.

Thanks!

Nope, I don’t watch the Oscar’s. I did see Chris with his girlfriend in a pre-Oscar party pic. Looks like he is getting ready to start the Walter Cronkite movie based on the stache he is sporting.

I found my favorite wine is now made in cans.

In the continuing saga of the Fraud on my Macy’s American Express card, well, yes, it’s still going on. My mind boggles too. I have come to hate Macy’s with a purple passion. Any other color passion too.

The winds are back. For the next three days. Hurricane force at times. Lovely.

I am…behind. I have made progress on the Leap story but it is not finished. I need to get the chapter of The Fling done THIS WEEK. And I have made zero headway for my T’hy’la story. I have to provide my first update on the 29th. Ugh. Just…yeah. I’ll get there. But if I can get the update for The Fling done and the Leap story finished, then I think I can concentrate on the Bang story for a while. I am SO sorry that will mean less updates on AO3.

Wednesday is My Funny Valentine, a TOS Valentine’s Flash, and also a Song Flash. Yay. It will get posted to AO3 too eventually under my holiday collection. Friday is an AOS Valentine’s story.

I did go for a walk yesterday but there were no new pictures to take for February. We’ll see what I can come up with later!

Hope everyone has a good week.

A little TOS, post-mission, pre-Motion Picture

“Are you going to stop him?”

Jim smiled faintly. “Stop him? No.”

Bones made a frustrated sound. “Why not, Jim? You’re just going to let him walk away? Leave Starfleet? Walk away from you?”

Jim looked at Bones. In the last year of the five year mission, Bones had been looking older, more haggard. They probably all did. The last five years had taken their toll on all of them. He wasn’t at all surprised Bones had announced to him that he planned to retire. He was done with space, he said.

“Yes.”

“I don’t get it, Jim. Why don’t you call him back right now?” Bones grimaced. “I can still see the back of that stupid hobgoblin. With his Vulcan hearing—”

“No, Bones.”

“But don’t you want to tell him how you feel?”

At this Jim deflated some. “I’m guessing he knows and is leaving anyway.”

Bones made an ugly face. “Wait. What? He knows?”

“I’ve not made my feelings a secret for the last year. I can’t give Spock what he wants.”

“Which is?”

“A life devoid of drama and emotions.” Jim shook his head. “That’s not me. We both know it.” Jim shrugged. “So.”

“And what do you intend to do now?” Bones demanded. “If you aren’t going after him.”

“I’m not. Why are you so passionate about it anyway? You’ve never even liked Spock.”

Bones scowled. “Well. I don’t dislike him. And if he made you happy…but now, well, you’re saying he doesn’t?”

Jim put his hand on Bones’ shoulder. “I’m saying, let it go. I’m not going to force Spock to be with me, Bones. And as for me? I have a promotion ceremony to attend.”

“Still can’t believe you’re going to be Admiral Kirk.”

“Me either. But I had little choice. Come on, Bones. There’s time for us to have a drink.” Jim paused. “I really need one.”

Flash Fic, 02/05/2019

“You can’t save Spock by sheer will, Captain,” Sulu declared.

Jim pressed on Spock’s gaping, bleeding wound. “Watch me.”

“Captain, we’re sitting ducks here in this clearing.”

“Do what you need to do, Mr. Sulu. In fact, that’s an order. But I’m not leaving him.”

“Captain,” Spock said weakly. “Go with the others.”

“No.”

“If you stay then we will both die.”

“Okay then.”

“Jim…”

“I’m not leaving here without you, Spock. So can it.”

“Keptin,” Chekov spoke up. “I have the Enterprise. They can beam us up.”

“Do it.  Beam us up. All of us.”

It was much later that Spock looked at him with somewhat droopy eyes as he rested on a biobed, all patched up. Or mostly. Thanks to Bones.

“Captain, you should have left me behind.”

Jim smiled a little and squeezed Spock’s hand. “There’s an old saying from Earth, Mr. Spock. Used by comrades for hundreds of years. You go, we go.”

Spock just stared at him. Jim nodded and turned to see Uhura approaching.

“Stay with him,” he urged. “He’s in and out of it, but he’s doing much better.”

He went to move past her, but she put her hand on his arm.

“Captain, thank you. For what you did down there.”

“I would have done that for anyone. And you’re welcome.”

She looked thoughtful for a moment, looked at Spock and then back to Jim. “He’d want you to stay.”

“I’ve got work and anyway, I’m sure he’d rather have you.”

“No. You’re wrong. Maybe it’s not my place to tell you, but, Spock has…” She stopped, bit her lip, and sighed. “He has very deep feelings concerning you. He doesn’t know how to express them.”

“Lieutenant…”

“And I have a feeling you reciprocate those feelings. I’ve thought so for a long time. Whatever you think about Spock and me, right now, we’re just friends. It’s been that way for a while. He’d want to see you, Captain.”

Jim exhaled. “I do have reports and a few things to do. But…I’ll come back later.”

“So…what I’m telling you…it does have meaning?” She searched his eyes.

He chuckled low. “Yeah. It’s meaningful.” He patted her arm. “Thanks. I’ll be back later.”

“And you should clean up,” she said, arching a brow like her former, apparently, boyfriend. “You still have Spock’s blood all over you.” She frowned. “And your own?” Her gaze went to the red on his shirt. “Are you bleeding, Captain?”

“It’s nothing.”

“Has Leonard checked you out?”

Bones suddenly appeared. “Did I hear my name?”

“The captain is bleeding.”

“Uhura! Damn it. Bones, I’m fine.”

Bones grabbed him and hauled him away. “I’ll be the judge of that, you idiot.”

Ramblings 02/04/2020

If you aren’t bored with my stupid updates, here’s another! LOL

Did I tell you that we had a film crew on our premises on Friday? We have a shaped lawn outside our building and they wanted to film there. So we had a ton of crew and stuff all day Friday. They also set up their catering trucks, etc. Alas it was not for a movie starring Chris Pine or Tom Hanks or anyone. It was a lawnmower commercial. Still it was pretty cool to watch them.

I have finished all flashes for March now. Lucky you, you are getting Wednesdays and Fridays in March as well. Not sure about April yet. I do have a flash in mind for April 01, which is a Wednesday, and I may just go ahead and get that written and scheduled too. Keep in mind many of these are necessarily short for sanity’s sake.

Still need to do the Leap story.

After that’s finished, my plan is to get an update done for one of the two stories I have left that hasn’t been updated since November 2019, then I will fully immerse myself in the Bang story.

Right this minute I have no concrete plans for this coming weekend, so I hope that is a good thing for me. I could stand some writing time.

Tomorrow is the first February flash.

I preliminarily did my taxes and am getting about $900 back. That will be gone in a flash on bills, etc. And I haven’t yet filed, but wanted to see what I could expect.

In other news they have decided to replace the third person at my job who does it, so that was good news. No one has been hired, yet, as they just got approval, but it’s nice to know we will get that relief eventually.

Rambles 02/03/2020

Well…my weekend didn’t go quite as I hoped as we had a friend over Sunday who basically took up the entire day. And Saturday we had errands. I should have done so much more than I did. I also way over ate. Sigh.

Got nothing done writing-wise of which I am quite ashamed. Nothing productive at all really. Double sigh.

I have two more stories that need to be updated and taken into 2020 and that’s The Mysterious One and The Fling. I will do my best to get them updated soon. But I am also trying to get March flashes done, Every Four Years Later, and actually get a good start on my T’hy’la Bang story and in all honesty I’m a little stressed about it all. Plus work…so, wish me luck.

I’ll get stuff done for you guys to read, promise. At least here if no where else.
