A little bit of a different scenario

Jim Kirk looked up from his PADD at the tall, thin Vulcan standing before him. He took a moment to admire how goodlooking the man was. And as much as he wanted to flirt, he was there to do a job too.

“You must be the Vulcan from the Science Academy here on the Enterprise on temporary assignment.” Jim checked the name. “Spock, is it?”

“That is correct.” And even though he was around the same height as Jim, give or take an inch, he managed to look down his nose just the same. “Lieutenant.”

“Captain Pike has given you the honorary rank of commander while you’re onboard, Mister Spock. Your quarters are with the other executive officer quarters on deck seven. The number is 7248.” He stopped and smiled. “Mine is 7249. We’re neighbors.”

“I see.”

Jim’s smile dimmed just a bit but he shrugged. “I have down here that your assignment on the Enterprise is to last one year. Is that your understanding as well, Commander?”

“Affirmative.”

Jim saw that others were lining up behind the Vulcan to get their assignments, so he marked Spock checked in.

“You’re all set to settle in.”

“Thank you, Lieutenant.”  And Spock moved off, but not before Jim saw him look back at him.

Perhaps he was more interested than it seemed.

One year later

“So, you really told your dad?” Jim asked as he pulled on his new uniform. He’d just been promoted to Lieutenant Commander.

“Indeed, Jim.”

“And the Vulcan Council?”

“They were not pleased.”

Jim smiled and reached for Spock. “And that rank is no longer honorary. And you didn’t even have to attend Starfleet Academy.”

“I completed the course work over the last year and technically graduated.”

Jim laughed. “Show off.”

“My parents are eager to meet you at the first opportunity,” Spock informed him.

“Me? Great.”

“They will like you. And it is normal to meet the parents of one’s mate.” Spock frowned. “Isn’t it the same on Earth?”

“Well, yeah. But let’s put off meeting Mom and Sam as long as we can, hmm?”

Spock shook his head. “If we do not depart now, we will be late for the captain’s morning conference.”

“Right. Just one tiny kiss then.” He leaned in and kissed Spock. He went to pull away, when Spock drew him back.

“A minute or two late is acceptable,” Spock murmured against Jim’s smiling mouth.

“Gentlemen,” Pike said a short time later. “Nice of you to join us.”

Jim spotted Uhura hiding her smile as he and Spock took their places at the conference table.

Pike nodded. “Let’s get started. Report…”
