Spock was a little surprised when Doctor McCoy had shown up at his apartment door along with the captain, though he supposed he shouldnβt be. In the years theyβd all been acquainted, McCoy was usually around when Jim was.
In the early days, Spock had a hypothesis that they were more than friends, or at least the doctor had wanted to be, but that was early on and Spock no longer believed there was anything between them but a brotherly bond.
Still Jim hadnβt mentioned inviting McCoy to breakfast the night before when Spock had been tending to Jimβs wounds.
Although that had been unexpected and rather mildly annoying, what was more alarming was the cool look Jim had given them as Spock stepped out of his apartment to join them for breakfast.
βMorning,β Jim said, without any trace of warmth.
In the beginning of their contentious relationship, Spock had been somewhat used to cool looks from his captain. Heβd found Jim rather moody.
But as they became friends, he got many more smiles and laughter.
Until right before Krall, that was. Something had changed between them then and Spock never really knew what it was.
It was then he had made the decision to leave for New Vulcan.
All that had changed again though and he was staying. Things had begun to look up for them again, including as recently as last night, and yet this morning cold Jim was back.
βWhere are we going for breakfast?β Spock made himself ask. He had very little appetite now.
βThe Yorktown base cafeteria works for me, if does you two.β Jim eyed him. βItβs got plenty of vegetarian choices.β
Since they were hardly going to have a private table for two now with McCoy along where they ate really didnβt matter so Spock agreed.
Since it was cafeteria, it was serve yourself, and when Spock had selected oatmeal with raisins, he made his way to a table where Jim had already sat himself.
The captain had a cup of coffee and a cinnamon streusel muffin.
βIs that all your are going to eat?β
Jim nodded. βAll I feel like this morning.β
βAre you suffering any ill effects from last night?β
βNah, Iβve been beaten worse. By your girlfriendβs thug defenders for instance.β Jim smiled at him this time but there was hard steel behind it.
McCoy chose that moment to slam his tray of food down before plopping down in a chair. βIβm pretty sure these scrambled eggs have been under a heat lamp for three days.β
Jim snorted and took a sip of his coffee.
McCoy looked at Spock. βYou and Uhura reconcile again?β
Spock frowned and shook his head. βNegative. My romantic relationship with Nyota will not continue. Why do you ask?β
βShe was there this morning in your apartment.β McCoy shrugged.
βFor ship business concerning the roster of the Enterprise when we depart Yorktown.β Spock glanced at the captain. βThere have been some that have chosen not to continue.β
Jim nodded, but Spock could not help but notice Jimβs eyes appeared suddenly warmer. βI figured that. Altamid was pretty traumatic for a lot of the crew.β
βYes,β Spock agreed, then turned back to McCoy. βNot only do Nyota and I still serve under the captain onboard the Enterprise, but we also remain on good terms.β
McCoy smirked. βGood to know. Isnβt it, Jim?β
Jim shook his head but he smiled. βSpeaking of shipβs business, we really need to get together with Scotty and discussβ”

Ah man. See Jim! I knew there was a reason. No way it would be reconciliation!
So many feelings!

McCoy isnβt beating around the bush! Iβm glad that he came along. Jim would never have asked the direct question about Uhura! See Jim, not all is as it appears!

Jim *may* have gotten around to it eventually but he definitely would have been more subtle LOL

Spock acts all innocent as though he can’t imagine why Jim would suddenly be acting cold.
Makes me wanna use my fave phrase from Lois and Clark’s Superman after being exasperated at Lois: “Women. EARTH women.”
Except it doesn’t work here. I was gonna say, “Vulcans. EARTH…” but since he’s not…well, here, I can make it fit: “Vulcans. HALF-EARTH vulcans.”
Fine, I’m sure I and the writer of that L/C line are the only ones who find it so apropos so often.
Anyhoo, glad the doc was making sure Jim knew the truth, whichever way Spock answered. I thought Jim’s line was rather to the point though, about Spock’s girlfriend’s thugs.
Looking forward to the next!
(Jim CAN be moody though. But, you know, premies can be like that! LOL)

In Spock’s defense since he had already told Jim that he and Nyota were not together that should cover that. He thought he made it clear that they wouldn’t be reconciling. AND since he is first officer, naturally he has to conduct business with other officers of the crew π
Yes Jim totally got in a zinger about Spock’s girlfriend’s thugs!
