“I came in second place!”

Bones patted Jim’s back. “Congratulations.”

Jim gave his best friend a look. Disgruntled to say the least.

“Did you hear what I said? I came in second.”

“Yeah, I think that’s great.” Bones frowned. “Wait, you’re disappointed?”

“I tried really hard,” Jim told him. “I expected to win. I hate to lose, Bones.”

“You didn’t try hard, Jim. You barely studied.”

“Well.” Jim read the results again. Sighed. “Who came in first, do you know?”

“I did.”

Jim turned around and stared at the Vulcan, Spock, who had just come up behind him. “You, Spock?”

“Indeed.”

“Damn. You didn’t tell me you were entering. I probably wouldn’t have entered had I known. Or, I don’t know, maybe I would have studied more.”

“Or at all,” Bones muttered.

Jim shot his friend another look. “Shut up, Bones.”

“Congratulations, Spock.”

“Thank you, Doctor. Would you care to have dinner, Jim? We can discuss the results further if you wish.”

Jim narrowed his eyes. “I don’t wish.”

Spock arched a brow.

Jim sighed. “Fine. I mean dinner is fine. But no gloating about beating me.”

Spock fell in step next to Jim as they began to walk. “I do not gloat.”

Bones stared after their departing figures. “Goodbye! You know most people say that when they walk away from someone!” he shouted after them.

Jim smiled. “You hear anything, Spock?”

“A gnat, I believe.”

Jim waved his fingers in Bones’ direction, who huffed, turned around and walked in the opposite direction.

Flash Fic, September 20, 2021

Jim watched his two friends, Spock and Uhura, as they interacted during lunch. They were all seated at a table in Starfleet Academy’s cafeteria. He didn’t miss the warmth in the Vulcan’s dark eyes as he sparred verbally with Uhura, the communications expert. He also didn’t fail to notice her bright smile and frequent laugh.

He sighed inwardly as he stabbed absently at the lettuce in his salad. He’d wanted a burger and fries, but had bowed to the wisdom of his friend, Leonard “Bones” McCoy, a doctor, who had already departed their table for a class. Now he was sorry he had listened to Bones, because damn he wanted to stuff his face with that burger. He knew all about the problems with emotional eating. But that was what he was feeling now.

Unrequited love sucked. And he had it big time for the Vulcan sitting across from him. The problem was that Uhura wanted Spock too and from all appearances Spock very much reciprocated her interest.

“Are you quite well, Jim?”

It took Jim a moment to realize he was being addressed. He’d felt ignored throughout the lunch.

He looked up into those beloved dark eyes and forced a smile. “Sure. Just thinking about a test.”

Spock nodded. “It would be wise to prepare for it. And now I must excuse myself to attend class.” He rose.

Jim was preparing to depart himself when Uhura put her hand on his arm.

“If you don’t mind, Jim, I’d like to talk to you for a minute.”

“Okay, yeah, I’ve got time.”

And he did too. He had only one more class that afternoon and it was not for two more hours.

They both watched Spock depart before she turned to Jim.

“I want some advice.”

Jim blinked but then grinned. “You need help with a class?”

She snorted and flipped her ponytail. “Get real. I certainly don’t need your help with that.”

He raised both eyebrows. “What then?”

She sighed and leaned her chin on her hand. “There’s this guy I’m super into and I’m not sure he’s into me.”

Jim thought about the last hour or so of lunch. “Oh, I bet he is.”

“I don’t know. I’ve been trying to get him to ask me out but so far nothing I’ve done has worked.”

Jim nodded. He loved Spock. Probably always would. But if Spock wanted to be with Uhura, Jim was okay with that. Spock deserved whatever he wanted.

“Have you tried asking him out yourself?”

“No,” she admitted. “I kept hoping he’d get the hints.”

Jim smiled. “I don’t think he always gets subtlety. Sometimes you have to be straightforward with him. I think if you tell him how interested you are and want to go out, he’ll agree immediately.”

“Yeah? You think so? He’s really into me too, you think?”

Jim ignored the crack in his heart as he said, “Oh yeah. Trust me.”

Uhura smiled. “Thanks, Jim. I’ll keep you posted. I gotta go.”

****

It wasn’t until the next morning that Jim saw Uhura again as they passed each other on the path between buildings.

She gave him a big smile. “You were right! He agreed right away. And he told me he hasn’t been able to stop thinking about me. A part of him thought I was out of his league which was why he hadn’t asked me out.”

“That’s great. I’m happy for you.”

“We’re going out tonight. Thanks, Jim!”

And off she went.

Jim’s heart broke more, but he never really expected someone like Spock would be interested in him. Gorgeous, brilliant, could have anyone he wanted in the universe. Why would he want a farm boy from Iowa?

****

After all his classes were over, Jim decided to go for a walk. He wasn’t really keen on returning to his lonely dorm room. Bones had a date. Uhura and Spock had a date. Seemed like everyone but Jim did. So much for his reputation as a slut, Jim mused.

But as he walked through the common areas, Jim was somewhat surprised to see Spock coming toward him. He had believed that the Vulcan would be getting ready for his date with Uhura.

Spock slowed as he neared Jim. “Hello Jim.”

“Hi Spock. I didn’t expect to see you out and about. Unless you’re on your way?”

Spock frowned slightly as he stood before Jim. “On my way?”

“For dinner?”

“I had not thought that far ahead yet, but if you would care to join me—”

“Join you? What about Uhura?”

“Nyota? I do not understand.”

Then almost as though she had been conjured up, across the campus, Jim spotted Uhura, arm in arm with Cadet Mark Owens, a sometimes member of their cafeteria group. Jim hadn’t a clue that Uhura had been…well anything with him. No wonder Owens had been confused and hadn’t known the so-called communications expert was into him.

“Jim?”

Jim turned back to smile at Spock, his heart suddenly a thousand times lighter. “I thought you and Uhura had a date.”

“Me and Nyota?” Spock shook his head. “She is interested in Cadet Owens.”

“Yeah, I, uh, I’ve come to realize that.”

“My interest lies elsewhere also.”

Jim deflated slightly. “Oh yeah? Who?”

And honestly, he was sorry he asked. He didn’t really want to know who Spock had the hots for.

Spock inclined his head. “As to that I am still waiting for a response to my inquiry.”

“What inquiry?”

“Would you care to join me for dinner, Jim?” Spock asked, rather pointedly this time.

“Oh. Sure. Yeah, I’d like that. But who—” Jim stopped, stared at Spock who had arched a brow. “Is it me?” His voice had not squeaked, really.

“Who else?” was Spock’s simple answer. “I have thought I was quite obvious in my interest.”

Jim’s smile widened further and his eyes lit up like the sun. “Maybe we should skip dinner.”

“You are not hungry?”

Jim shrugged. “Well.:

“Come, then. We will pick something up and take it back to my apartment. You can leave early in the morning to make it to your morning class.”

“I’m staying?”

“Aren’t you?”

“I sure am, Spock. I sure am.”

Flash Fic, September 17, 2021

You can perhaps view this as the beginning for one of the other prior flashes from earlier this month…

Spock woke staring at the ceiling. He had been lying in his back, which was not his usual position for sleeping. He immediately realized why. He was holding onto a Human male who was using Spock’s chest as his pillow.

It had been unlike Spock to go to a drinking establishment at all let alone to “pick up” an individual. A stranger. A stranger no more, obviously.

It was definitely unlike him but then this Human was unlike anyone Spock had ever known.

As Spock stared down at the male resting against him, the man’s eyes, brilliant blue, slowly opened and stared up at Spock.

“Hi.” His voice was rough and tired sounding. But he smiled.

“Hello, Jim.”

“Good morning, Spock.”

“Would you like breakfast?”

Jim’s smile widened. “Got any coffee? I’d kill for some.”

“No need to commit murder, I can get you coffee.”

Jim laughed. “Good.” He yawned. “But let’s not move quite yet. Unless you have somewhere to be?”

“I do not. It being Saturday, I have no Academy business.”

“Me either. Good. Then,” and here Jim took Spock’s hand, “stay here a while longer then?”

Spock tightened his hold on Jim by way of answer and Jim sighed, contentedly and closed his eyes. Spock did the same.

Suggestions Needed

I have 5 more Academy Flashes to write for this month and I have no clue what to write

Any suggestions? Please nothing too complicated or involved, I just don’t have time for that right now.

Thanks!

Flash Fic, September 15, 2021

Jim opened his door to a serious looking Spock.

Well, all right, he always looked serious. But this was more serious than usual. Er, Jim supposed.

“Yeah?”

“May I come in?”

It was on the tip of his tongue to say ‘go take a flying leap’ but of course what he actually did was stand back to let Spock inside.

He wore his all black professor’s uniform and it should not look as hot as it did. As he did. Obviously.

Jim had just take a shower and when the doorbell rang, he’d only bothered to pull on a pair of shorts he’d had since he was just out of high school. They weren’t in the best shape. He’d slung a towel around his neck and his hair still dripped down on to it.

“I have come to…” Spock stopped, seeming at a loss for words.

Jim didn’t bother to prompt him.

“I am aware that I am arrogant, coldly unfeeling, and-and bitchy as you said.”

Spock had struggled with that last part. Jim nearly smiled, but this was no laughing matter, after all.

“But…if there is anyone in this universe that I am not coldly unfeeling toward it is you.” Spock paused. “I am not certain I can control the arrogant part. It is difficult to change what I have always been.”

Jim did allow the tiniest bit of the corners of him mouth to upturn. “Admittedly you have reason to be arrogant.”

“Yes.” Spock looked startled. “I mean, no. I do not. As for b-bitchy, well—”

“Spock, I think, somewhere in there is an apology. Right?”

Spock straightened. “Yes, exactly.”

“And I’m guessing this is your way of saying you don’t want things to end between us.”

“Definitely not.” Spock took a step forward. “I feel a level affection for you unmatched to anyone else.”

Jim did smile then. “That’s about as close to a declaration of love as I’m going to get from you, I’m guessing.”

“Jim—”

Jim laughed and pulled Spock close. “You’ve convinced me. I accept your unique apology.”

Spock leaned into his arms. “I am…gratified.”

Flash Fic, September 14, 2021

“What’s that?”

Jim smiled into the camera and clicked the button. “My new communication device.”

Bones snorted. “Okay, I can kinda see that. What’s wrong with your old one?”

“You know I keep dropping it.”

“Right.”

“I, uh, I dropped it in the toilet. Turns out it’s not waterproof,” Jim said sheepishly.

Bones gave him a look. “Ya think? But I gotta ask. What the hell are you doing?”

“Taking a selfie to send to the cute guy I want to date of course.”

“Of course. Is it working?”

Jim flashed him a smile. “Ask him yourself.”

“Ask who–“

“Good afternoon Doctor.”

Bones turned around. “Professor Spock. Should have known. “I’m surprised you didn’t send him selfies of your–“

“Bones!” Jim laughed. Grinned at Spock. “Besides, Spock already knows what that looks like.”

“I have a class. You two just…leave me alone.” Bones shook his head and hurried away.

Jim linked his arm with Spock’s. “Shall we?”

“Indeed.”

Just a fun little silly extra as my iPhone 12 mini arrived today. No more bulging phone! Yipee!

Flash Fic, September 13, 2021

Spock noticed Cadet Kirk’s absence from his class immediately. Of course he did. Kirk was his brightest student. It was nearly impossible not to notice him when he was there, as Spock certainly had from dat one, and now his empty seat definitely caught his attention.

But he was not alarmed. There were lots of reasons Kirk would not have attended the class and students often were absent.

When the course ended, however, he received notice on his Academy PADD that Cadet Kirk had withdrawn from the class.

Spock frowned. He was well aware that Kirk needed the class for his curriculum.

He had an appointment to meet a friend for tea, but he had no choice now but to postpone that meeting to a future date. He quickly sent the message and left the campus to seek out Cadet Kirk.

Kirk…Jim lived at a small apartment building a block from campus. He had explained to Spock that the apartment belonged to his mother’s sister, and she had allowed him to live there instead of him having to stay in a dorm.

Spock had been there recently. The night before in fact.

Nothing seemed out of the ordinary when he arrived, so he knocked softly.

Only a moment later, Jim appeared at the door, opening it. He wore his red cadet’s uniform. He smiled.

“Hey.”

Spock frowned slightly. “Is everything all right?”

“Sure. Come in.” Jim seized his arm and pulled Spock inside the apartment. To Spock’s surprise, Jim pulled him into a passionate kiss, which admittedly confused him further. When Jim pulled away, he seemed as puzzled as Spock. “What’s wrong?”

“I came to inquire that of you. You did not attend class today and then you withdrew.”

For a moment, Jim stared at him. Then he smiled slightly. “Last night. What did it mean to you?”

“I do not understand.”

“Yeah, I’m beginning to get that. Spock, last night, it was amazing. More than I could have hoped for, and I guess, it was more than a one-night stand, right? I thought it was.”

Spock tilted his head. “Yes, of course.”

“Good. I’m surprised you don’t know this, but sleeping with your student is against regulations.”

Spock blinked and stared at him. He still had his arms around Jim and Jim was still clutching him. Neither of them made a move away, Spock had no desire to.

“I…had not yet thought of that.”

Jim grinned. “Last night really knocked you off your axis, huh?”

“Clearly. Then you withdrew from class for that reason.”

“Yep. Because I intend to, you know, keep sleeping with you, Professor. As often as possible.” Jim paused to give Spock a saucy look. “In fact, we should be doing that right now.”

Spock had to admit the idea had merit. But first. “Jim, you need that course for your command curriculum.”

“I know that. I’ve already talked with my academic advisor, and I can take it next semester with Lewiston.” Jim leaned in to kiss him.  “See, I’ve thought of everything.”

“Mm.” Spock gave himself to the kiss. “You are clearly more with it than I.”

Jim laughed against his lips. “Clearly. I’ll take your lack of clarity as a compliment that I really knocked your socks off.”

Human idioms. Spock shook his head. “Quite so. In that case, as to your suggestion, we should indeed, be sleeping together this instant. Without the sleep part, though.”

“Now you’re speaking my language.” Jim reached beyond Spock to lock the apartment door. “Come, professor. Why don’t you get this cadet uniform off me?”

“My pleasure, Cadet Kirk. My pleasure.”

Flash Fic, September 10, 2021

Spock opened the door of his apartment to the persistent knock. Standing there was a smiling Nyota. He could see she held a paper bag in her hand.

“Good morning,” she called out cheerfully.

“Did we have plans to meet?” Spock asked.

“No, no. But I was going by that bakery that sells those pastries you like and I just couldn’t resist getting them and coming over. I thought you could make us a pot of tea with them.”

Spock glanced toward the bedroom.

Nyota’s smile widened and before Spock could stop her, she pushed her way inside the apartment.

He opened his mouth.

“Hey Spock, I can’t find any towels. Where…”

Jim had just come out of the bedroom, wearing Spock’s bathrobe. His hair was standing on end and there were clearly marks on the exposed areas of his chest. His lips looked still swollen from Spock’s abundant kisses.

Jim blinked. “Uh, sorry, didn’t mean to—”

“The bath towels are in the cabinet in the bedroom closet,” Spock murmured.

He smiled a little. “Thanks.” He went back into the bedroom.

Nyota stood beside Spock, arms now folded across her chest, one hand dangling the paper bag. “Well.”

“Nyota, I do…apologize. As you can see, I will be unable to make breakfast.”

She bit her lip. “Was I wrong? I thought we were seeing each other.”

“You were not wrong, entirely, no. But my…interests have changed. I am sorry. It was my intention to see you soon to advise you of the change in my relationship with Cadet Kirk.”

“I see. So, uh, things are serious between you?”

“Yes. I am sorry, Nyota. It was not my intention to mislead you or hurt you. I have enjoyed our interactions, and think of you fondly as a friend. My romantic interest, however, lies with Jim.”

She made a face, but then sighed. “Okay. I mean, to be honest, when we first met I thought maybe you were gay.” She thrust the bag at him. “I got these for you so you may as well have them.”

“Nyota—”

“I know. We’ll talk soon, Spock. In the meantime, I think I need to go lick my wounds a bit.” She leaned over and kissed his cheek. “Bye, Spock.”

And then she was letting herself out of the door of his apartment.

When Spock turned back, Jim stood in the door of Spock’s bedroom, still wearing the bathrobe and holding a towel.

“Everything okay?”

“Everything is fine, Jim.”

Jim smiled a bit quizzically. “What was that about?”

“I am afraid Nyota thought the two of us were more than just friends.”

“You and me or you and her?”

Spock’s lips quirked. “Me and her. I think she is now well aware that you and I are more than friends.”

“I didn’t come out like that on purpose. Honest.”

Spock went to him and pulled him close, wrapping his arms around him. “It does not matter in the end, Jim. She is aware now.” He kissed Jim. “As am I.”

Jim grinned. “Want to share the shower with me, Professor?”

And so Spock said the words that started this. “I am amenable.”

Flash Fic, September 08, 2021

This is a continuation of the August 18th flash where Jim had marks on his neck.

“Who are you smiling at?” Bones demanded.

Jim let the smile slip from his face and turned his gaze back to Bones. “No one.”

“Oh sure. I’ve seen that smile. It’s your secret we’re going to sleep together later face.”

He laughed. “You’re crazy.”

“This is the same person who gave you the marks all over your neck.” Bones narrowed his eyes and looked around the cafeteria. “I don’t see him.”

“Bones—”

“See who, doctor?”

Jim Jumped as Spock appeared at their table. “Uh. Hi Professor.”

“Cadet,” Spock murmured.

“Idiots,” Bones said much louder.

Jim rolled his eyes. “Would you like to join us?”

Spock nodded and sat directly beside Jim.

Bones grimaced. “How’s that logical philosophy going, Spock?”

“Logical philosophy?”

“Uh-huh. That class Jim’s taking with you.”

Spock eyed Jim, who merely smiled. “He is a perfect student.”

“Oh, I’ll just bet,” Bones said with a snort. “He’s definitely getting good marks…ouch! Damn it, Jim. Now my shin is killing me.”

“Hypo yourself.”

“Why don’t you go—” Bones stopped himself and sighed. “Oh forget it. I’ve lost my appetite. Enjoy your…uh…lunch.”

Jim watched his friend skedaddle. He shook his head.

“I owe you an apology, Jim.”

Jim smiled quizzically at Spock. “Yeah?”

“About the doctor. You are correct. He is quite…odd.”

He laughed again. “Yeah, you got that right. And I don’t have a class the rest of the afternoon. What about you?”

“I too am finished for the day.”

Jim’s smile widened. “Then why are we still here instead of on the way to your apartment?”

“That is an excellent question. Let us rectify that.”

Jim winked and they rose from their seats, heading out of the cafeteria and off to their logical philosophy course for that extra credit Jim definitely needed.
