We revisit Jim and Spock from Hello Darkness My Old Friend

“How do you feel, Jim?”

Jim smiled at Bones. Excitement filled every single bit of him. He was pretty sure if he touched anything, sparks would come from his fingertips. Fanciful, yes. But he came from a fanciful family.

“Great. I feel so great.”

Leonard “Bones” McCoy eyed him. “I suppose you aren’t going to miss me?”

“Of course I will. I’ll miss you like…well a lot…and I wish you were getting the Farragut too, but you’ll be great on the Excelsior and one day we’ll be together again.”

Bones snorted. “Time to break into song, Jim?”

He grinned. “You know it. Sing with me, Bones.”

They sang in unison, “We’ll meet again, Don’t know where, Don’t know when, but I know we’ll meet again some sunny day.”

Bones laughed. “You’re still a little bit off but that’s what I like about you.”

Jim shook his head. “I can hardly believe it. After all I’ve been through.” He bit his lip and looked through the glass partition at the arrivals of the ships that were docking in San Francisco. He was watching one in particular way in the back. “You know I hoped they’d let me join the Enterprise.”

“Spock’s ship.”

“Pike’s ship.” Jim rolled his eyes. “Anyway, no. They decided to put me with Captain Garrovick.”

“Garrovick’s a good man. You’ll do well there.”

Jim nodded. “He knew my dad. We’ve talked some about him.”

“But first two whole days of reunion,” Bones said dryly.

“Arranged by Garrovick and Pike. Wasn’t going to happen otherwise. Not much of a substitute considering we’ve been separated two years, but I guess it will do.”

“I’ll leave you to it, then, Jim. The Excelsior is expecting me.”

“God, I can’t believe this is goodbye.”

“For now.” Bones smiled and hugged him. “Don’t forget that sunny day.”

“Take care, Bones.”

Jim watched him walk away with an ache in his chest. Everything was changing. And it was good, yeah, but it was bad too.

“Jim.”

The soft word said behind him had him turning quickly. He’d been so sure that he’d come the other way that—

Spock!”

“T’hy’la,” Spock said, rather reverently, his dark eyes wide and pale in his face as he pulled Jim close and into his arms.

That there was proof at how rattled the Vulcan was, to show so much affection right there in public.

Jim wrapped his arms around him. “Spock. I can’t believe you’re real.”

“I am real.” He exhaled slowly. “And unwilling to let you go.”

Still, Spock drew back. He stared into Jim’s face. “This separation has been much harder than I anticipated, even with our continued communication. And now you will be on the Farragut.”

“I know. But…I’ve made a ton of progress and I’m cleared for duty. And God, it’s amazing to see you. Come on. I have a hotel for us.”

They left the ship hangar and headed through the streets to their hotel. Spock kept his hand in Jim’s and Jim realized that the Vulcan was shaking.

As they approached the hotel, Spock remained silent, pensive, thoughtful.

“Having second thoughts?” Jim asked.

“And third.” Spock shook his head. “We will talk inside.”

Spock stopped in the middle of the lobby, looking quite perplexed at the large tree decorating it.

“It is July.” He paused. “Is it not?”

Jim laughed at the Christmas tree. “Yeah. They’re having a Christmas in July Ball tonight. I didn’t know when I booked the hotel.”

He led Spock to the elevator and up to the room he’d booked for them.

He supposed he should be concerned by Spock saying he was having second and third thoughts, but he was not. Spock’s unusual clinginess led Jim to believe that he didn’t have anything to worry about as far as Spock’s affection went.

“What’s wrong?” he asked when they were in the room alone.

“I wish…I know I questioned the wisdom of a long distance relationship. And this is as long distant as they come.” Spock shook his head. “We have remained in touch when we could, but I find that it is not enough, Jim.”

“What are you saying, Spock?” Jim decided to put forth the possibility Spock wanted to see others. He didn’t really, himself, which was weird. But they had mentioned that it wasn’t the time for them when they’d parted in San Francisco before. “Do you want to be with others? We did say it wasn’t right for us before. We’ve been keeping in touch but if that’s not what you want then…”

“I have not changed my mind or the depth of my feelings. Quite the contrary.”

“Meaning?”

Spock moved closer and took Jim’s hands in his. “You know that I love you. Do you still feel love for me?”

“Of course. Yes. I love you.”

“Then it is not your intent to be with others?”

“No, Spock. I haven’t been with anyone since we parted. I was working on my issues, I didn’t need to add anything to them.”

Spock nodded, his dark eyes warming. “Though we will be serving on different ships under different captains, I seek a deeper connection between us.”

Jim’s heart began to race. “What are you saying, Spock? You want to…bond?”

“Yes. Please.”

Jim laughed. “Are you sure? You really want…?”

“More than anything. When I leave here to return to the Enterprise and you to the Farragut, I want us to be mates.”

“And that won’t hurt you?”

Spock shook his head. “It will bring me peace.” He pulled Jim close. “Will you allow me to bond us?”

Jim swallowed, closed his eyes and laid his head on Spock’s shoulder. “Yes. Bond us.”

AN: In 2014 I wrote A Spirky Christmas Carol and to this day it remains my favorite Christmas story I have written. It makes me cry and I read it every year. No doubt because of my absolute love of the original story (favorite book).

So even though it’s been six years, I couldn’t help visiting these two all these years later. And the first one was rather melancholy, so I used that same sort of theme here.

Spock was not cheerful on his best days, Jim knew. He had never known his boyfriend to break into a smile or laugh or anything like that.

He was sweet and kind and a very generous lover, but he was serious, reserved and withheld most emotions from easily being viewed, even by Jim.

For the first few months after they’d gotten together over last Christmas, they’d maintained separate residences. Spock almost never left Jim’s apartment, though, and when he had, they’d both been miserable over it.

One day Spock said they should just live together and Jim agreed.

But when Jim had brought home a Christmas in July item to decorate the apartment, though Spock had tried to hide his displeasure fast enough, Jim had seen it.

It was difficult, that day, for Spock. Jim knew that. Spock’s mom had died on Christmas Eve years before and the whole thing had nothing but unpleasant memories for him. Jim too, really. His father-in-law had been an absolute beast.

But Spock had come at Christmas to be with Jim, after Jim was sure that Spock didn’t care for him at all, and so, when he’d seen the silly bit of decorations in the store, Jim, probably stupidly, got them and brought them home.

“Jim.” Spock eyed them with distaste, unmistakable.

In the months they had been together, they almost never argued. Mostly because when Spock felt like it, he opened his mouth, closed it, and then said he would meditate, and then everything was fine after that.

But now Jim could see he was struggling.

“It’s, uh, Christmas in July.”

Those dark eyes left the silliness and strayed over to survey Jim. He could read absolutely nothing there. Even the distaste was carefully hidden. And yet, somehow, the blankness, utter and complete, was almost worst.

“You hate them.”

“Yes,” Spock said, simply, precise.  “They are ugly and completely without merit.”

“I…”

“What a waste of resources. I cannot fathom why you bought them.”

And then he turned and walked away from Jim without another word.

The thing was, Spock had ceased to sound like Spock, but now sounded like Frank.

“What a waste of resources.”

“Christmas is stupid. You’re such a baby for even wanting it. Stop crying.”

Jim shook his head, trying to remove himself from the past and the demons from those days, but tears stung his eyes as he stared down at the decorations he’d bought.

Just a few glasses with sand and shells and Christmas ornaments. Jim had thought they looked cute and festive. Now he felt like such an idiot.

He hadn’t felt like that since he’d foolishly asked Spock to spend Christmas Eve with him.

“I’ll never learn,” he whispered to himself.

He found the shopping bag from the store, packed up the items, and left the apartment without bothering to tell Spock he was going anywhere.

After returning the items to the store, he didn’t feel like going back to the apartment he shared with Spock. He wandered for a while until he found a little diner several blocks away. He went inside and ordered coffee and pancakes.

Pancakes had always been a comfort food for him. So when he got them, he heaped them with butter and syrup. As much as he could stand.

When he was done with them, he ordered more.

He got a text from Spock on his communication device then.

Where?

That was it. Nothing else.

He absolutely considered not replying but his communicator could be tracked anyway.

Dalton’s

He had never been there with Spock, but he figured Spock would figure it out if he wanted to.

He was half way through the second plate of pancakes when Spock arrived. He didn’t look up when the Vulcan slid into the booth across from him.

Instead he said, “When I was thirteen I was sent to Tarsus IV to begin a new life.”

“Jim…”

“I was deemed worthy of living when some many others I knew were not. When I’m upset and stressed I can either eat three plates of pancakes or go three days without touching food.”

“Ashaya, I am sorry.”

Jim finally raised his gaze to Spock’s. “I’ve lived with abuse, Spock. Physical, yeah, but verbal, too. And I don’t want to live like that again.”

Spock swallowed. His dark eyes looked anything but blank. “My mother’s birthday was in July. That is no excuse for how I behaved and I acknowledge that. I love you. You are the only one who keeps me grounded. If I have lost you…”

Jim sighed. “You haven’t. No. I love you, too, Spock. But you-you can’t just shut me out. You could have told me about your mother’s birthday. I would have understood that it makes it harder for you with the Christmas theme. It’s just, all my life I’ve tried to be normal, like normal things and…”

Spock took his hand. “Jim. Please. My behavior was illogical and uncalled for. I sometimes forget I am not alone any longer and that I have you and all experiences are new again.”

There went the tears again. Jim rolled his eyes at himself.

“That goes double for me. I’m sorry. I don’t think of you as an abuser.”

“I am gratified. And when you are done eating, will you return to our apartment with me?”

“Yes. Of course I will.”

When they walked back to their apartment together, not hand in hand, as even months later, Spock was far too Vulcan to attempt that, but he walked very close to Jim, and that was enough.

When they got inside, Jim saw on their coffee table the three glasses with the Christmas in July decorations placed there.

Eyes wide he looked to Spock.

“How did you…?”

“I knew where they were from. I saw them too. And I knew you took them back. You are welcome to have whatever decorations in our home you wish, Jim. Always.”

Jim went into his arms and smiled wide when Spock produced a sprig of mistletoe over their heads.

From The Matchmaker

“Where is Jim?”

Spock looked up from the book he was reading to gaze into the consternated eyes of his young nephew.

“Vanik. You let yourself in again.”

“Affirmative.”

“Now that Jim lives with me it is not appropriate for you to show up in our apartment unannounced.” He really didn’t think it was appropriate before either, but he would not bring that up again. “Jim values his privacy.”

Vanik nodded. “Understood. In the future I will knock loudly on the door so that neither of you are surprised by my arrival. But…where is Jim? I thought for a moment that you had already managed to chase him away.”

“Vanik.”

The boy shrugged, a smile tugging at his lips. “A small jest at your expense.”

“Clearly.” Spock put his book down. “Why are you looking for Jim?”

“More specifically I am looking for you to learn what you have planned for your anniversary.”

“My what?”

“Anniversary. Approximately six months ago, you and Jim met, which set you on the course to become the brilliant example of couplehood that you are now.” Vanik straightened. “I could take full credit for that, but I believe that would be unfair to Jim. He had something to do with it as well.”

“And I have not?”

“Not much. You are…obtuse. In any case, what have you got planned?”

Spock paused. Glanced around the apartment. “Nothing.”

“Nothing? No Christmas in July celebration?”

“I do not participate in the merriment that surrounds Christmas, why would I have Christmas in July?”

“Because Jim does.”

“Well. But we were not yet engaged in our ‘brilliant couplehood’, as you put it, last Christmas.”

“All the more reason,” Vanik said, with a dramatic pause, “that you should do something to mark the occasion now.”

Spock shook his head and rose from the couch, followed by Vanik, into the kitchen. “I really do not believe that is necessary. Jim has not mentioned a particular interest in such frivolities.”

“As to that, since you are, obtuse, I am not certain that is the case.”

“Stop saying I am obtuse.” He sounded mulish to his own words.

Vanik waved this away. “It is not something you can help. It is what it is. Kaiidth.”

“You have been paying far too much attention to your father lately.” He reached into the fridge for the pitcher of iced tea. He took out two glasses from the cabinet. Shook his head at Vanik when he put out his hand for one. “This is for Jim who should be home any moment. You are not staying.”

As if Spock had conjured him, and he would if he had the power, the door of the apartment opened and Jim, dressed in his red cadet’s uniform stepped inside.

“Oh. Hey. Hi Vanik. Didn’t know you were coming.”

“No one did,” Spock said, pointedly. “And he was leaving.”

Vanik gave him a petulant pout before turning to Jim. “I was under the impression the Academy was out for a few weeks due to the summer holidays.”

Jim smiled. “I enrolled in the summer program to get ahead of everyone in the command track.”

“Oh. That is logical. Happy Anniversary.”

Spock cleared his throat loudly but his nephew ignored him.

Jim looked at Vanik quizzically. “Anniversary?”

“Six months since you and my uncle met. Does no one understand the significance but me?”

Jim laughed. “Um. Sure, kid. It’s definitely significant. And Spock and I love that you remembered. You’re so cute.”

Spock was amused when Vanik blushed.

“I am sure your mother would appreciate you returning home as quickly as possible,” Spock told Vanik.

Vanik sighed and nodded. “Very well. Do try to do something celebratory in my absence.”

Jim’s smile widened. “I’m sure we’ll think of something.”

Spock walked his nephew over to the door and watched him leave. “Let us know you made it home safely,” he reminded Vanik.

After closing the door, Spock turned to Jim. “Welcome home.”

“Thanks, Spock.” Jim gave him a lingering kiss. He grinned. “And about that celebration…”
