“What’s the last thing you remember?”

Jim shook his head. “Uh. I dunno. Waking up here in medbay, I guess.”

Bones frowned. “And nothing at all about the mission or the landing party?”

“No.”

“Well. You did get conked on the head. It’s probably temporary.”

“Probably?”

Bones smiled slightly. “Most likely. I’m keeping you overnight and then I can release you to your quarters under supervision and observation of Spock.”

Jim paused. Then asked, slowly, “Spock?”

“Yes. He’s waiting to see you.”

“Why?”

“Oh likely because he’s worried sick.”

“Doesn’t want to take over captain duties?” Jim asked, puzzled.

“Jim, what do you remember about who Spock is?”

“First officer.”

“And that’s it?”

Jim thought. “Science officer. Vulcan and Human.” Jim smiled. Shook his head. “Pain in the ass.”

He could see Bones’ face change and definitely not in a good way.

“What?” Jim asked.

“Spock is…your husband, Jim.”

“My what?” Jim laughed. “Spock? Oh come on, Bones. Pull the other one. He’s with Uhura.”

“No, not for a long time. You and Spock got married and bonded last year.”

“That’s crazy.”

“I thought so, but it’s true,” Bones said wryly. “You’d better rest, Jim. I think I better go have a word with Spock.”

Jim shook his head as Bones walked away. Him and Spock? Maybe it was Bones who got conked in the head. But, now that he thought about it, he was feeling pretty sleepy. He closed his eyes.

“I heard somebody was grumpy.”

Spock looked over the rim of his teacup. Jim stood at the foot of biobed, smiling gently at Spock.

“I am not.”

He held out his hand for Jim to come to him and Jim came, quite willingly. He grabbed hold of Spock’s hand, sat on the edge of the bed and leaned down to kiss Spock softly on the lips.

“How are you feeling, honey?”

“Remarkable well, considering,” Spock replied. “You are well?”

“Not a scratch on me. I’m sorry I wasn’t here when you woke. I was on the bridge.”

“Yes. And I know you do not…”

“I hate that part, yeah.” Jim squeezed Spock’s hand. “I don’t ever want to hurt you.”

“Your history with domestic violence,” Spock said with a nod. “It is not the same, ashayam.”

“I know. I do. But I’d still rather not. Anyway, you have to stop playing the hero.”

“I was not playing the hero,” Spock insisted.

“Hmm. I may have been a little harsh with Ensign Mayo just the same.”

“When can I get out of the medbay?”

“I’ll have to check with Bones but I’m sure you aren’t ready.”

“I am sure that I am.”

Jim laughed. “We’ll see.” He kissed Spock again.

“Captain to the bridge.” Sulu’s voice,

Jim sighed. “Duty calls.” He rose and gave Spock’s hand once last squeeze. “I’ll check with Bones and come by later. Love you.”

“I love you also.”

Jim gave him one last kiss and then left Spock alone. Spock sighed. Maybe he was a little grumpy.

Flash Fic, June 18, 2021

“When will he wake up?” Jim asked Bones quietly.

He was in the medbay watching from a distance as Uhura sat by Spock’s side. According to Bones, Spock was in a healing trance.

“Hard to tell, Jim,” Bones replied. “I hear it can last for hours or days, depending on the extent of what needs to be healed. Spock was in a bad way, so I think we can expect a longer time.”

Jim nodded, squeezed Bones’ arm, and then went to Spock’s biobed. Uhura stood up immediately and wiped at her eyes.

“You okay?” he asked.

“Yes. He-he asked for you before he went into the trance.”

Jim took Spock’s hand.

“I can leave if you want to sit with him.”

“I’d like to, but I’m needed on the bridge. I’d like you to sit with him, if you can. He needs a friend to watch him. And then later, when he needs to come out, I’d rather…”

Uhura embraced him. “I get it. I’ll do what needs to be done to get him out of it when the time comes. I know you don’t want to hit him.”

“Right.” Jim’s throat hurt. “Thanks.”

“He’s going to be okay.”

“I know.” Jim leaned over and kissed Spock’s forehead. “See you soon, sweetheart.”

Then he took another hug from Uhura and went back to the bridge to wait.

Some hours later, he was commed.

“Uhura to the bridge.”

“Kirk here.” His heart raced.

“Captain…he’s awake.” She paused. He heard the smile in her voice. “And grumpy.”

“Tonight, I’m going to meet the person of my dreams,” Jim announced.

Leonard eyed him.

They were both dressed in costumes. It was Starfleet Academy’s Summer Masquerade. Leonard had chosen to wear an old man’s costume, with wrinkles and a wig of long white hair. Jim had applied his makeup.

Jim had decided to dress as a Space Pirate. He even had a patch over one eye, which made him constantly squint with the other to see better.

Idiot.

“Person?”

Jim shrugged. “Could be anyone. Male or female. I won’t know until I see them.”

Leonard snapped his fingers. “Just like that. You’ll see them and know.”

“Yep.” Jim clasped him on the shoulder and said, “Let’s go.”

The auditorium was crowded with cadets and professors alike. Made Leonard feel a bit claustrophobic honestly. Jim was looking around, rather anxiously, likely looking for this dream person.

“What if you don’t see your person of your dreams? What are you gonna do? Sulk?”

“No. But I will. I can feel it.”

“You’re psycho not psychic.”

“Ha ha. You’re so funny. I’m going over there to get a drink. Be right back, old geezer.”

Leonard snorted and began to mingle with a few others. He was greeted by quite a few and complimented on his costume. After a time he realized Jim hadn’t come back and it appeared that he’d been gone a whole hour. Leonard went looking for him.

He finally spotted Jim in a corner of the auditorium. He was leaning against a wall, talking to someone. From Leonard’s observation the guy Jim was talking to was also dressed as a space pirate.

Then as Leonard watched, Jim raised his hand to the other man’s face and then, a finger caressed a long an ear. A pointed one, Leonard realized.

He stepped over to them, figuring he’d tell Jim he’d see him later so that Jim could enjoy himself.

Jim smiled brightly, his gaze flicking to Leonard. “Hi, Bones,”

“Jim.”

The other space pirate turned to look at Leonard and he realized instantly that the guy was a Vulcan.

Jim’s one eye sparkled. “This is Spock.”

“Doctor,” the Vulcan pirate said.

“Spock,” Leonard replied. “So, uh, Jim. Is this…what we talked about?”

“Yep.” Jim had his hands on the Vulcan’s arms and Leonard noticed the Vulcan didn’t seem to mind one bit.

“Happy for you then. I’m going to go make myself scarce. See you later?”

Jim glanced at Spock’s face, who arched a brow. Jim winked and smiled, then looked back at Leonard. “Maybe not for a…day…or two.”

Leonard sighed, nodded, and moved on.

When he glanced back, the Vulcan’s head was bent close to Jim’s and Jim laughed at whatever he must have said. And then, Spock took hold of Jim’s arm and they headed for the exit. Leonard shook his head. Whatever.

“Hello,” a soft feminine voice said from behind Leonard. He turned quickly. She was dressed as an old woman, he noticed. Leonard smiled. “Hello there. I’m Leonard.”

Happy Flag Day June 14, 2021 (Flash)

You’re a grand old flag
You’re a high-flying flag
And forever in peace may you wave
You’re the emblem of
The land I love
The home of the free and the brave
Ev’ry heart beats true
Under red, white and blue
Where there’s never a boast or brag
But should old acquaintance be forgot
Keep your eye on the grand old flag

If you are looking for the main Birthday story, Longer (based on the song by Dan Fogelberg, please go here.

“So,  your birthday is Flag Day, huh?”

Spock heard the flirtatious tone in his mate’s voice even from his position by the door of the drinking establishment. He’d come looking for Jim.

Jim sat on a bar stool at the bar, next to a pretty blonde woman with a rather extravagant hairdo piled atop her head.

“Flag Day?”

“Oh. Well. An old Earth thing. Many years ago, centuries really, Iowa was part of the United States of America,” Jim said, cheerfully. “They had a holiday back then on this day.”

“Ohhh.” The blonde was leaning toward him, smiling brightly.

Spock sighed and approached.

Jim glanced at Spock, his smile not dimming even a little. “Hello there, Mister Spock. This here is…what did you say your name was?”

“I didn’t,” she replied, coyly.

“Birthday Flag Girl then. It’s her birthday. I bought her a drink.”

“I see that. Happy Birthday.”

“Thank you,” she said.

“This is my esteemed second officer.”

“First.”

Jim nodded.  “And also a big pain in the a—”

“I am also the captain’s husband,” Spock interrupted coolly.

The blonde’s mouth pulled into an “O” shape.

“That too,” Jim acknowledged with a wave that nearly knocked him off the stool. Spock steadied him.

“And if you will excuse us, ma’am, I will be extracting him from this current situation.”

She shrugs a little and smiles, rather apologetically. “Can’t blame a girl, can you?”

Spock nods. “I cannot. But I assure you that he’s twice the big pain in the ass as he was about to say I was.”

She laughed at that. She really was attractive. But she could not have Jim. No one could but Spock. He was Spock’s “problem” to deal with.

Spock helped Jim to slide himself off the stool and he held onto Spock with a firm but trembling grip. The blonde woman excused herself then.

“Happy birthday, Flag Girl” Jim yelled after her.

Spock turned Jim toward the exit door but Jim wasn’t moving.

“You still mad at me?” Jim asked, gazing at Spock from beneath his lashes. Unfortunately for Spock he was adorable and sexy and Spock could not resist him.

“I am not. But you did over indulge. Come. It’s time to return to your farmhouse.”

“Not mine,” Jim mumbled. But this time he allowed Spock to take him to the door and outside. “I hate Riverside.”

“I know, ashayam. We leave tomorrow.”

Jim smiled. “Yeah. Love you.”

Spock returns the smile and the sentiment.

“Captain, it was never my intention to—”

Jaw tight, body rigid, his captain glared daggers of ice at Spock. “I don’t want to hear it, Commander. Get out.”

Spock stood just inside the door to Jim’s quarters. That his captain was extremely angry he made very clear.

“But—”

“I said get out. That’s an order.”

Spock tugged down his Science blue shirt, pursed his lips, and wondered if it was worth arguing further. Based on the cold fury in Jim’s eyes, he decided not. With a nod, he exited Jim’s quarters and went to his own.

Once there, Spock changed out of his uniform into much more casual attire, regulation pajamas. Then he went into the bathroom he shared with Jim, opened the door to Jim’s quarters and walked in.

Jim, arms folded in front of his chest defensively, gave him a look. It was mildly less hostile than before.

“Jim, may I speak?”

Jim turned away and walked over to his own wardrobe, pulling off his own uniform shirts. Spock waited. When he had pulled a T-shirt on, he turned back to Spock.

“Okay.”

Spock allowed himself to feel some relief. “It was never my intention to challenge your authority in front of the crew. I was out of line.”

“Yes.”

Spock approached Jim where he stood. “There is no finer captain in Starfleet than you. And there is no one I respect or admire more both as my commanding officer and as my friend. That I made you doubt that, I regret immensely.”

“Okay, Spock,” Jim said softly. “I forgive you.”

Spock felt that it should not be that easy and he wondered if indeed it was not. But Jim’s gaze was softer and more open than it had previously been.

“I will not do it again,” Spock promised.

Jim’s lips twitched. “Oh you probably will.”

“Jim—”

“But right now, we’re not captain and commander. We’re Jim and Spock. Off duty, out of uniform, out of words.”

Spock’s brows furrowed, but then cleared when Jim stepped close. Spock closed his arms around Jim and pulled him close. Jim’s arms came around Spock as he buried his face into Spock’s neck. Spock closed his eyes, grateful for Jim’s forgiveness and understanding. It was quite difficult managing a relationship with your commanding officer and made more so because that officer was Jim. Their relationship would never be easy for Spock. Or for Jim, he suspected. But it was more than worth it for both of them.

“I love you,” he whispered.

“I know you do,” Jim replied. And it was as good as Spock would get. He knew that. Jim had not yet said those words to Spock, but Spock was patient. They would come.

Flash Fic, June 09, 2021

“That is an infant.”

Jim, who currently held that infant in his arms, raised both eyebrows. “Your powers of observation never fail you, Spock.”

Spock frowned. “Is it yours?”

“A girl. No, she’s not mine. At least…not yet.”

That earned him a curious look. “Explain.”

“She was…is…the daughter of my brother, Sam.” Jim blew out a breath. He brought her closer to where Spock stood just inside the door of Jim’s apartment, having arrived only moments earlier. “They brought her to me because I’m Sam’s next of kin.”

Spock stared at the baby and then at Jim. “They?”

“The authorities from the planet Mylon where Sam lived. Both Sam and her mother were killed in the Klingon invasion.” He bit his lip. “What do you think?”

“She is beautiful. But will you be able to care for her?”

“I will if…”

Spock’s dark gaze met his. “If?”

“You help me.” Jim sighed. “I know when you thought about pursuing a relationship with me, this wasn’t in consideration, so I can’t blame you if you change your mind.”

“I have not.”

“There’s no one else, Spock. The thought of giving her up, to someone else, I just…I don’t think I can. She’s the only part of Sam left.”

Spock did not say anything for a long time. Then he said, in almost a whisper, “We will need to shop for the items she will need.”

Jim exhaled. Smiled. “Yeah. Yeah.” He leaned over to meet the lips that captured his.

“Sometimes I feel invisible.”

Spock looked at his companion in surprise. They were walking side by side on their way to a student meet for Starfleet Academy cadets.

“I do not understand.”

Jim Kirk, sandy hair and bright blue eyes, gave him a sideways glance. “What do you mean?”

“You are the least invisible person I know.”

Jim frowned. “What does that even mean, Spock?”

Spock shook his head. “Everyone notices you, Jim. Everywhere we go, you are the first person anyone speaks to or looks at no matter who else is with you. I do not understand how you can believe yourself to be invisible.”

“Well. I mean, I guess they see the outside of me well enough, but they never go beyond the surface to see what’s going on with me. It’s all…shallow.”

Spock considered this. “Do you feel that is true of me?”

Jim stopped then, on the edge of the campus. Rather near the exit of the Academy though not that far from the Biology Building where the student meet was.

“Clarify.” Jim had a slight smile on his face as he used Spock’s own term against him.

“I believe that I see well below your outside appearance to what makes you who you are, but I wonder what your perception is.”

Jim’s smile widened and to Spock’s pleased surprise, Jim slid his hand toward Spock’s and touched his index and middle fingers to Spock’s,

“I know you see me, Spock.” He paused. “I see you too.”

As the warmth where their fingers still touched infused Spock’s entire being, he inclined his head.

“Are you quite certain we have to attend the student meet?”

Jim grinned. “I’m quite certain we don’t.”

“Really?” Spock asked, doubtfully. “We did say we would meet up with friends.”

“They’ll understand. Besides, I want us to see each other a little closer still.”

Knowing by that slight smirk what Jim referred to, Spock allowed himself to consider the possibilities.

“We could be late.”

Jim’s eyes danced. “We could be very late.”
