And Totally Modern Jim continues

Jim slid into the bench of the booth to sit across from his friend, Nyota Uhura. The restaurant she’d chosen was pretty bland and not his favorite. Hugo’s Health Food Restaurant.

“To think we could have gone for Asian fusion.”

Nyota wrinkled her nose. “I don’t like fusion. And besides you know I have to be careful. I can’t have dairy or gluten.”

“Or anything good,” he mumbled.

She snorted. “You’ll survive missing a cheeseburger once in a while.” She paused to glance briefly at the menu, but then she put it down just as fast. “So, what do you think?”

Jim knew what she wanted but he liked to make her ask for it.

“About?”

“Montgomery Scott. Is he…”

“I met a weird guy.”

“Everyone you meet is weird. Can we just—”

The waitress arrived at their table. “Something to drink?”

“Coffee?” Jim asked hopefully.

“Sorry, honey. We don’t serve coffee.”

Nyota smirked. “We’ll have a pot of cranberry tea, Doris. And thank you.”

“Cranberry tea.” Jim sighed. “He was weirder than most.”

“Can we get back to my problem?”

“So Scott’s a problem?” Jim was amused.

“You know what I mean,”

“Contrary to popular opinion, I do not have gaydar.”

“Jim—”

“But no, he’s totally straight. And into you.”

She looked hopeful. “Yeah?”

The waitress arrived with their pot of bloody red tea. Okay not bloody red, but it was pinkish nevertheless and wholly unappetizing. Come to think of it, Jim knew a lot of weirdos.

 “I’m pretty sure.”

She made a face. “Why hasn’t he asked me out then?”

“Because guys like that think girls like you are off limits to them. That you wouldn’t be interested in him.”

“Why not?”

Jim shrugged. “Probably because you prance around acting like you’re God’s gift to men.”

Nyota gave him a look. Sniffed. “I am.”

He laughed. “And that’s why he hasn’t asked you. Scotty’s an average guy. He thinks you’re out of his league. If you want to get something started, Ny, you’re going to have to ask him.”

“Fine.”

She poured them each a cup of the tea and Jim took a tentative sip.

“It’s as bad as I thought it would be.” He glanced at the menu. “What can I get here that won’t make grass grow on my chest or something?”

“They do have a veggie burger on a gluten free bun.”

“Swell.” But when the waitress came, that’s what he ordered.

She leaned her chin on her hand. “So tell me about the weird guy. Who is he?”

“He lives next door. He dresses pretty strange. Like a Tibetan monk or something. Some of the time, anyway.”

“Like what the Dalai Lama wears?”

Jim frowned. “No, no. More like, uh, I guess a Franciscan monk. Like Friar Tuck from Robin Hood. But sometimes he just wears regular pants and a sweater with a hoodie.”

She looked amused. “Are you stalking him? You know an awful lot about his wardrobe.”

“Of course not. But he lives next door. He also has pointy ears.”

“Pointy ears?”

“Like Legolas.”

“Oh.” She nodded. “Like a Lord of the Rings fanatic. Just like wears fake ones all the time?”

“I think his are real.”

She snorted. “All right, you’re right, he’s weird.”

“Thing is, I kinda like him. He’s trying to get a teaching job at the Science Institute.”

“You like everyone.” She patted his head. “Honey, you aren’t always the best judge of character as far as relationships go.”

“What?”

“Gary.”

“Asshole.”

“Ruth.”

“Bitch.”

She laughed. “You’re making my point for me. Just, you know, be careful with this pointy eared dude. What’s his name?”

“Spock.”

“Spock what?”

“Just Spock.”

She snorted again. “Be really careful, Jim.”

He sighed. “Yeah.”

This conversations must definitely needed to happen after Galileo 7

Jim noticed Bones leaving Spock’s quarters and nearly called out to his friend to ask him what was the deal, but something made him hold back and just watch Bones leave.

After McCoy moved out of sight, Jim went to Spock’s door, and after a moment was granted access. He’d been expected and Spock was setting up the chess game when he entered.

“Captain.”

“Jim,” he gently reminded Spock. “What did Bones want?”

Spock stiffened around the shoulders a bit. Then he turned around. “To offer an apology.”

Jim frowned. “For what?”

He took his seat and waited as Spock brought them over beverages.

“Spock? For what?”

“His recent behavior on the mission,” Spock replied after a moment.

“Behavior? What behavior?”

Spock did not answer immediately and seemed reluctant.

“That’s an order, Mister Spock.”

“At times the crew of the Galileo were insubordinate,” Spock said, moving his first chess piece.

Jim narrowed his eyes. “To you?”

Spock nodded. “McCoy among them. The situation was stressful and tense.  After Latimer was killed, I hoped to avoid further destruction of the natives on the planet where we were forced to land. The others wished to kill them outright. One of them killed Gaetano and the crew blamed me.”

“You were making decisions based on the available information you had at the time. I read your report.”

“Yes, but they did not see it that way.”

Jim drummed his fingers on the table. “All of them? Bones? Scotty?”

“Mister Scott was not insubordinate directly, no.”

“But the others were, including Bones.” Jim grimaced. “I’ll talk to them.”

“McCoy apologized. I would rather it was dropped.”

“What about Boma?”

Spock shrugged.

“It’ll go on his record,” Jim stated.

“As I said, Captain, I would rather it was dropped.”

“And I would rather the crew respect the first officer of this ship. Spock, you aren’t going to just accept that kind of thing. And I’m not going to either. I’ll have a word with both Bones and Boma. If I don’t get a satisfactory response from Boma, it’s going on his record. What about Mears?”

“Like Mister Scott, she was not directly insubordinate.”

“Okay. I know we’ve discussed this, Spock. I really want you to tell me about this kind of stuff.” He sighed and leaned back. “And I added to it.”

“Captain?”

“Teasing you on the bridge about your emotional response and calling you stubborn.”

“I was not offended, Jim.”

“Still.” Jim shook his head. “I’m sorry, Spock.”

Spock covered the hand that rested on the table with his own. “I accept your apology, Jim. The game?”

Jim smiled, turned over his hand to touch their palms together briefly before moving his hand over to grab his coffee cup.

“Right. I believe from last time we played I was about to checkmate you.”

Blue Christmas

Advent Day 21

Jim was just putting the finishing touches on his present for Mommy when his brother came slamming into the house.

Sam was dressed in a heavy coat and scarf with a knit hat on his head. There was a light dusting of snow on him too.

“What are you doing?” Sam asked.

“Working on my Christmas present for Mommy. It’s a necklace with my hand print.”

His brother stood there silently for a moment or two and then he shook his head. “She’s not coming home for Christmas, Jimmy.”

“Sure, she is,” Jim said, matter-of-factly. He stuck out his tongue in concentration as he put glue on the bale of the necklace.

“No.” Sam paused. “She isn’t.”

Jim looked up at his brother. He had a flicker of a doubt but he quickly dismissed it. “She said she was. She promised.”

“Well she’s breaking that promise. You might as well learn now that adults break their promises all the time.”

“Not Mommy.”

Sam sighed. “She sent a message earlier today. She can’t make it off that rock she’s working on in time to make it. I’m sorry, Jimmy. But she won’t be home from Christmas.”

Jim stared down at the necklace he clutched in his hands. He felt the tremble in his bottom lip even as Sam turned away and stomped upstairs in his snow boots.

A minute later, Jim stood up from the table, scooped up all the stuff he had for the necklace and threw it in the trash.

****

Jim smiled faintly as he looked up at the tall blue Christmas tree with white lights. It was in the so-called city square on Yorktown. Jim was dressed casually, having ditched his uniform a short while ago. It was the “evening” on Yorktown complete with atmospheric coolness piped in for the time of year.

“You seem sad.”

Jim glanced at Spock, who had just appeared beside him. “I was thinking of blue Christmas.”

“The tree?”

“The song actually. But yeah the tree reminded me of it.”

Spock tilted his head. “And why is it a blue Christmas?”

“Not today really. It’s just…when I was a kid, pretty young, I was expecting Mom to come home, only she couldn’t make it, her work wouldn’t let her get away. I was absolutely beside myself over it. Threw away the present I was making for her and cried for hours.” He shook his head. “I didn’t understand adult obligations then. I just knew she had disappointed me again. After that, for the longest time, I wanted nothing to do with holidays. It just meant disappointment to me and so I stopped even thinking about them let alone celebrating them.”

“Understandable,” Spock spoke quietly. “And now?”

Jim turned to face Spock and smiled, holding out his two fingers as Spock had taught him. Spock met them and, as usual, Jim felt the slightest of zings.

“Now, I couldn’t be happier, and I say, welcome Christmas. But when we get back to the room? I need to video conference Peter. It’s not nearly enough. But I’m close enough to his location to reach him. Mom wasn’t and it was something I really resented for a long time. I should have cut her some slack.”

“You were just a disappointed child,” Spock pointed out, falling into step next to him.

“I know. But I don’t want Peter experiencing any Blue Christmases.” Jim reached for and received Spock’s hand, as they walked back to their room surrounded by twinkling lights.

In Dulci Jubilo

Another request/suggestion

Advent Day 14

‘What’s wrong, lass?”

Nyota looked up as Monty moved to sit at her table in the mess room. She’d been staring into her cup of spiced tea for a while now so she wasn’t surprised he’d come to ask her what was wrong.

“I have a problem.”

“And what would be that?”

“I think Kirk wants to get with me.”

Monty frowned. “The captain? But well, now, are you sure?”

“Not entirely,” she admitted. “But I do have evidence to come to that conclusion.”

“What evidence?”

“You know how he came on to me when we first met.”

“That was a long time ago, lass.”

“I know, but I was with Spock for years, so obviously he wasn’t going to jeopardize his friendship with Spock and command over that. We’re not together now and ever since Kirk found out he’s been paying far more attention to me.”

“Oh?”

“Even had a drink in my quarters a few weeks back. We started talking about music and I was playing some holiday stuff. I admitted to him how much I loved In Dulci Jubilo.”

“The old hymn?”

She smiled. “Yes. Spock told me long ago that it was his mother’s favorite, even though, you know, she was Jewish, she loved that song and even sung it in choral when she was young. I told Kirk all this and I said when I listened to it, I fell in love with it. I thought it was so pretty and I play it every year since.”

Monty shrugged. “A few outings with the captain hardly proves he’s interested in you, lass. He hangs out with McCoy and Spock too.”

She waved away that. “They’re different. They’re his male buddies. You know what a hound dog with the women Kirk is.”

He pursed his lips. “Hmm.

“There’s more.”

“I’m listening.”

“He’s been acting mysterious lately. Throwing me furtive glances. So one night I kind of followed him. I wondered what he was up to and if there’s something mentally wrong with the captain, I think Starfleet should know.”

“Ny—”

“Oh, don’t get me wrong. I like Kirk as much as everyone else these days. Not at all romantically, of course.”

Monty smiled. “I should hope not.”

She laughed and touched his hand. “I just mean, I was worried about him. That mission on Alasidair was particularly hard as four crew members died and Kirk himself was seriously injured. So I found him in this little area of engineering no one else goes to. He was making something.”

“Making something?”

“Yes. Out of wood. Carving this little box. I couldn’t see what the carvings were but while I was there, he operated a mechanism in the box that played music and I realized he was making some kind of music box. It looked very pretty, honestly. The song he was playing was In Dulci Jubilo.”

“So?”

Nyota sighed. “Don’t you see, Monty? It’s obviously a gift for me. He was obviously grilling me that night to find out what I liked and he’s making it for me. Probably to give to me for the holidays to soften me up to the idea of him as a partner.”

“Surely he knows you and I are seeing each other,” Monty pointed out.

“I don’t know if he does as I haven’t told him, but even if he did, it might not matter.”

“I don’t believe that. You said yourself Kirk didn’t try anything once he knew you were with Spock.”

“True. Then he must not know. I just don’t know what to do when he presents the gift to me. I’m not at all interested in him. I’m with you. I don’t want to hurt him, but I have to be honest with him.”

Monty nodded. “Perhaps you should explain to him. But in private, not in front of others, so as not to embarrass him.”

“Yes, exactly. It’s not a conversation I wish to have with him, but he’s leaving me no choice.”

****

Nyota approached the captain’s quarters. As she started down the corridor she heard low murmuring, so she stopped her forward motion.

Standing in the corridor next to Spock’s quarters were Kirk and Spock. She could see from where she was that Spock was blushing. She didn’t quite understand why.

“It is calligraphic Vulcan,” Spock whispered.

“Yeah.” Kirk’s tongue darted out and he shifted nervously. “I, uh, I studied it. Wasn’t easy to carve believe me.”

“You carved it yourself?”

“Well, yeah. I made the whole thing from start to finish. Sam and I used to do a lot of woodwork when we were kids. Our Grandpa Kirk taught us. Making the boxes, carving, even the little musical parts. He taught us all that.” Kirk ran his hand over his hair. “It’s been a long time since I made one.”

Spock’s warm brown eyes were glistening as he looked at Kirk, somewhat in awe. “And the music?”

“In Dulci Jubilo.” Kirk paused. “Your mother’s favorite, right?”

Nyota’s breath caught in her throat and she put her hand to her mouth as she realized what an absolute fool she’d been.

“Yes,” Spock agreed. “How did you know?”

“A friend told me.”

Spock looked toward the door of his quarters. “Will you come in?’

Kirk smiled. “I’d love to.”

Spock opened the door and her two command officers disappeared inside. With a shake of her head, Nyota smiled, and went to tell Monty.

The next evening at the Enterprise holiday party, she was not at all surprised to see how cozy Kirk and Spock were.

“What’s that?”

Jim smiled into the camera and clicked the button. “My new communication device.”

Bones snorted. “Okay, I can kinda see that. What’s wrong with your old one?”

“You know I keep dropping it.”

“Right.”

“I, uh, I dropped it in the toilet. Turns out it’s not waterproof,” Jim said sheepishly.

Bones gave him a look. “Ya think? But I gotta ask. What the hell are you doing?”

“Taking a selfie to send to the cute guy I want to date of course.”

“Of course. Is it working?”

Jim flashed him a smile. “Ask him yourself.”

“Ask who–“

“Good afternoon Doctor.”

Bones turned around. “Professor Spock. Should have known. “I’m surprised you didn’t send him selfies of your–“

“Bones!” Jim laughed. Grinned at Spock. “Besides, Spock already knows what that looks like.”

“I have a class. You two just…leave me alone.” Bones shook his head and hurried away.

Jim linked his arm with Spock’s. “Shall we?”

“Indeed.”

Just a fun little silly extra as my iPhone 12 mini arrived today. No more bulging phone! Yipee!

Cosmic Love, Part/Chapter 14

Probably not safe for work

Clothes were strewn about Jim’s dorm. They finally were lying on the little bed. Spock on Jim, kissing him breathless. Whatever experience neither of them had, Spock was a damn fine kisser.

And damn fine too. Before they’d gotten on the bed, Jim had snuck a look at Spock’s nude body. Maybe he was wrong, but Jim was pretty sure Spock was extremely well built.

Everywhere.

And perhaps that part being well built ought to scare him a bit but it didn’t.

Jim sucked in a gulpful of air when Spock paused long enough to allow it. When Spock resumed his mouth’s assault, Jim lowered his hand between their bodies and closed his fingers around Spock’s hardening shaft. Of course, Jim knew what one felt like, having one himself, but this seemed somehow different. Having his fist around someone else’s dick, and Spock’s for pity’s sake, well…Jim considered his mind blown.

Spock moaned and stopped kissing Jim long enough to say hoarsely, “I can blow something else should you desire.”

Mirth bubbled up inside him. “Oh, I desire all right. Wait, were you reading my mind?”

“I am a touch telepath,” Spock reminded him. He groaned loudly when Jim swiped his thumb over the head of Spock’s cock. “For someone who has not done that you remarkably talented.”

“Well.” And Jim was blushing. “I have one, you know, and have done some…practicing.”

Spock arched a brow. “Yes, I take your meaning. I cannot deny a bit of research myself.”

Jim grinned, pulled him down for another kiss, but this time Spock pulled away.

“If your desire is for me to work my mouth on that particular appendage of yours, we will need to cease kissing, so that I may move down there.”

This time Jim laughed out loud. “Oh, my gosh, you’re so cool. I never imagined sex would be so funny and fun at the same time.”

Spock shrugged, kissed Jim once more, and then began to crawl down Jim’s body, dislodging Jim’s fingers from his own dick as he did so.

Jim’s breaths shorted. This was real. Spock was about to—

“Ahhhhh.”

“I have the great Kirk where I want him.” The Gorn put a scaly hand on Jim’s battered, swollen face. His other hand jabbed Jim in his injured stomach. “I’m going to split you open and cook your meat over an open fire. We will dine on your flesh tonight.”

“And here I thought you were vegetarians.”

The Gorn hissed. “Your insolent bravery will soon be replaced with cries for mercy.”

The whir of the transporter had Jim grinning, bloody teeth and all.

“Or not.”

He reappeared on the Enterprise and collapsed to the ground.

“What took you so long?”

“Spock and I had sex.”

Leonard stared at his best friend across the table in the mess room. He had just taken a bite of food, which he didn’t thank Jim for one bit. He swallowed painfully.

“When?”

Jim lowered his voice, thankfully. “Yesterday morning. Um. Yesterday afternoon. Last night. This morning. This afternoon. And, well, about an hour ago.”

Leonard lifted his iced tea to his mouth and took a slow sip. He lowered it to the table very slowly.

“How is it you can walk?”

“I’m a little sore…yeah. Shh. Here he comes. Don’t say anything.”

“I won’t.”

“I am done with this conversation.” Jim snapped as he got in the turbolift. Spock followed closely.

“I am not done.”

Jim almost closed the doors right in Spock’s irritating face. But someone had to be mature here and apparently, this time, it was going to be him.

He crossed his arms in front of his chest as Spock stood stiffly beside him.

“You are being unreasonable,” Spock said through clenched teeth.

Definitely a sign the Vulcan was not pleased.

“You think this is unreasonable?”

So much for maturity.

Jim stepped onto the bridge, ignoring Spock as he did so.
