Six (also known as the Plus One)

Five Times Spock told Jim he loved him and the one time Jim told Spock.

Spock woke to the sound of rain against a window.

No, that wasn’t right.

He woke to lying in a biobed in the medbay. And it wasn’t rain, but Jim’s tears.

Jim, sitting in a chair beside Spock’s bed, had his face hidden against his forearm, which he leaned against  the bed.

“Jim,” Spock rasped.

Jim’s gaze rose instantly, tears still spraying his lashes, as he jumped up from the chair.

“Spock!” Jim leaned over him and kissed him on the lips, the wetness of his tears falling on Spock as he did so. “Don’t ever do that again!”

Though he felt incredibly weak, Spock lifted his arms to wrap around Jim to hold him close against him.

“It is all right.”

Jim pulled away and wiped his eyes. “No it isn’t! You almost died.”

“I am…somewhat relieved to find that I did not.”

“Somewhat relieved?” Jim repeated, sounding scandalized. He closed his eyes. Shook his head. Opened them again. They were pooling with renewed tears which alarmed Spock.

“Jim, I—”

“I fucking love you so much,” Jim managed to get out in a choked voice. “And this isn’t funny.”

“T’hy’la, I assure you I did not mean to imply that it is.” Spock swallowed hard. His heat beat fast. “You have never said that before.”

Jim stared at him. “What?”

“That you love me.”

Jim laughed and shook his head again. “You have to be daft not to know I am crazy in love with you.”

“I am not daft. I always believed that you did, but it is very nice to hear it for certain.” Spock paused. “Even under these circumstances.”

Jim grabbed his hand. “I will say it every day, every hour if it will keep you from pulling such a dumbass move again.”

“I will always offer my life as an alternative to yours, T’hy’la.”

“What is that word anyway? You’ve said it a few times.”

“It is a Vulcan word. It is hard to explain entirely but most easily explained to you by using the term…soulmate.”

Jim smiled. “Soulmate? I like the sound of that. I gotta tell Bones you’re awake or he’ll kill me.”

“Wait.” Spock held onto Jim’s hand. “Bond with me.”

“Now?” Jim’s brows rose.

“Not this very minute but in the foreseeable future.”

“A proposal, Mister Spock?”

“Yes.”

“And that’s what I say too.” Jim pulled Spock’s hand to his and kissed the fingers. “Yes.”

Three

“Oh, hey.”

Spock could not decide based on the tone of Jim’s voice or even the expression on Jim’s face if his seeking out Jim’s location on observation deck was welcome.

Earlier, when Spock was unable to reach him, he had learned Jim was at 10 Forward, and so was McCoy, so Spock had left him to it. But when Spock went to Jim’s quarters later, Jim was still not there, and Spock had discovered through the computer he was at his current location.

“Been looking for me?”

“Affirmative.” Spock paused. “If my presence is unwelcome, I will leave.”

“You’re never unwelcome,” Jim said softly, before turning his gaze away to the stars. “You heard?”

“Yes. I am sorry for the loss of your brother. I grieve with thee.”

“I hadn’t even seen him in years, you know? He didn’t care about me, so why should I care about him?”

“Emotions are seldom logical.”

Jim snorted. “That’s an understatement.”

Spock was pleased when Jim turned and threw himself into Spock’s arms. Spock closed his arms around Jim and held him there.

“I love you,” Spock told him.

“I know,” Jim whispered. “Thank you. I need you so much right now.”

Spock was glad to hear it and though it was not yet the three words he longed to hear, for now, it would be enough.

The final three parts will be next week sometime. Not Wednesday, as Ji’s birthday flash will be that day but on the other days. We shall see which ones!

“What’s your favorite color?”

Spock barely glanced at his captain as he leaned over the science station to study the screen there. “What?” he asked distractedly.

“Your favorite color.”

Spock straightened and turned his full cool gaze on Kirk. “Did you actually just interrupt my study of this sector to ask me what my favorite color is?”

Undeterred, Kirk nodded. “What are you seeing?” He slipped past Spock, pretty much wedged himself between Spock’s body and the station to look at the screen.   “So, what is it? Some space anomaly?”

“Actually…there is currently nothing out of the ordinary,” Spock was forced to admit.

The captain straightened and gave Spock a very chilly smile. “So I actually didn’t interrupt anything.”

“Well.”

“Favorite color?” Kirk persisted.

“What does it matter? I have no particular preference or any color, Captain. The question is nonsensical.”

“So’s your big nose.”

Spock sighed.

But the captain had moved away and to his seat. Spock glanced Nyota’s way but she had a disapproving look on her face and somehow Spock decided it was directed at him rather than their captain.

“I want a landing party for Denton 4,” Kirk said a while later.

Spock stepped forward to volunteer to lead the party.

“Nope. I’m taking lead.”

“But—”

“To explore new worlds,” Jim said with a charming smile. “That’s what I signed up for.”

“Very well, but as science officer—”

“Nah, I’m taking Chekov.” Kirk turned to look at Nyota. “You up for it, Lieutenant?”

“Yes, sir,” she answered immediately.

“I’ll round out the party with Scotty and Bones.”

“Captain—”

“Yes, Mister Spock?”

“Nothing.”

When Spock stood beside the biobed staring at the unconscious body of his captain, McCoy came up to him and patted his arm.

“He’s going to be okay, Spock. You can go back to your post.”

He nodded but didn’t move. He didn’t move for a long time.

Until Kirk opened his eyes to stare at him.

“Hey.”

Spock blew out a long breath. “Blue.”

The captain frowned. “Huh?”

“My favorite color, Jim. Blue like your eyes.”

Getting really close to the end here, folks. It’s going to be a “promising ending” rather than a happily-ever-after type but that leaves room for part two, doesn’t it?”

Even though this picture isn’t relevant anymore (see below LOL) I thought he’s too cute not to use one more time

Spock was left at something of a standstill. Not quite sure what to do since the Kirks took Bombay…Jim…off his hands.

Several days passed where he heard from no one but Spock decided until he did, he would  not return to his apartment, and he remained staying at the embassy until he was able to either learn more information or find out that no one else would be returning looking for Jim.

Spock did attend Nyota’s class on Jim Kirk, but he wasn’t able to learn anything he didn’t already know, and of course he knew more information than Nyota and her class did.

Afterwards, she came to speak to him.

“Spock! It’s wonderful to see you. It feels like it’s been forever.”

“I apologize, I have been…occupied.”

“I wasn’t even sure you were coming to today’s class. You only expressed mild curiosity.”

Spock inclined his head. “I have developed more of an interest in his case as of late.” Though he trusted his friend, Jim being alive in whatever form he was in was not his story to tell.

“Want to have dinner tonight?”

“Can we plan for another day?”

She smiled. “Of course. I’ll be in touch. Don’t be such a stranger.”

Spock could not deny he was likely neglecting his friends, his job at the Academy. He had asked for a leave. Hadn’t even admitted that to Nyota though he supposed she’d soon learn of it.

He was focused solely on Jim. It had become something of an obsession ever since he had touched minds with Jim as a cat. He felt somehow connected to Jim Kirk and that connection had been abruptly taken away.

He might never get it back.

Despite turning down Nyota’s invitation to dinner, Spock was hungry, so he stopped at a vegetarian restaurant near to the Embassy that included several authentic Vulcan dishes.

After obtaining the to-go packages, Spock made his way to his small studio quarters at the Embassy. He blinked at the flashing light at the door. When he’d left it had been solid red, indicating it had been locked. Flashing meant someone had accessed the door.

Alarmed, he set the bags down and cautiously opened the door.

A Human male with sandy-colored hear and startling blue eyes stood up from where he had been sitting on the edge of Spock’s bed.

Spock’s breath caught.

The man smiled. “Spock? I’m Jim Kirk.”

And of course he was. Spock would know that smile, those eyes, anywhere. Even though this was the first time he’d ever seen them on this absurdly handsome face in front of him.

He just stood there like an idiot, Spock imagined, by the door, staring in silent wonder at Jim.

Jim’s smile turned quizzical but no less charming. He walked over to where Spock stood.

“You okay?”

“I…”

And he was at a loss for words.

Seeming to understand something he himself did not, Jim stepped even closer and threw his arms around Spock in an embrace.

Spock’s breath hitched and his arms came around the man, pulling him close. And all at once that connection he’d felt seemed to ignite.

Jim pulled back to look at Spock’s face. “That’s pretty cool? Do you feel that?”

“I do, T’hy’la.”

Got it done after all…the story continues. (yes eventually this will make its way to AOS as a complete story)

Spock doesn’t really know what to do to change his current circumstances so he makes his way to his apartment.

The apartment looks as it should, at least on the outside, but Spock maintains caution until he enters the living space to inspect it.
Spock had left with Jim hastily, perhaps a bit apprehensive that someone would come there after Spock managed to get rid of the man with the fedora.

So Spock was somewhat surprised when the apartment appeared to be untouched and there was no sign of unauthorized entry. Still, he felt uncomfortable staying there under the current circumstance so he collected some belongings, as well as his computer, and locked up the apartment to stay somewhere else for the time being.

He’d thought about contacting his friend, Nyota, to stay with her, but he really didn’t want to place her in danger should someone come looking for him.

The Vulcan Embassy in downtown San Francisco maintained living quarters for dignitaries and given that Spock’s own father was an ambassador to Earth, he made his way to there and was provided a small apartment there similar to an Earth studio apartment. A room with a bed, a kitchenette, and a bathroom. It was enough and as secure as he could be at the moment.

He made himself tea and then set up his computer. He made immediate contact with George Samuel Kirk.

Jim’s older brother didn’t bother to pretend innocence.

“You made it safely back to San Francisco.” The older Kirk smirked. “Are you in a secure location?”

“At the Vulcan Embassy. Yes.”

Kirk nodded. “Good. Sorry about hitting you.”

“Then you are the one directly responsible.”

“Mm. Yeah. Tried not to hit you too hard. Listen, Jim is safe, thanks to you bringing him to us.”

“It was not necessary to get rid of me. I would not harm him—”

“We’re working on a solution to his…issue. Once we’ve helped him, should he desire contact with you, well, you’ll know. But in the meantime, you’ve got to let us handle this.”

“Why haven’t you admitted your family was made up of feline shape shifters?”

Kirk snorted. “Would you? Look what’s been done to Jim by those who have learned his secret. We’re already working on a knowledge plug to do damage control. Please keep all of this to yourself.”

“I have no intention of betraying Jim’s confidentiality.”

“Good. Then maybe Jim chose you well. I have to go. Don’t contact me again until someone from here contacts you. It’s best that way. Kirk out.”

And Spock’s computer screen went blank.

An attractive dark-haired woman greeted Spock in the foyer of a two-story home in the heart of the main city of Deneva.

The home looked sterile and impersonal, from the outside, and in the foyer where Spock was greeted.

She had introduced herself as Aurelan Kirk, George Samuel’s wife.

After Spock explained the situation, she had picked up the animal carrier to study Bombay herself.

“Jim! I can’t believe it.”

“Then you do believe this feline is indeed James Kirk?” Spock asked.

After the meld, Spock was certain himself, but he found himself having to ask nevertheless.

“Oh, yes, this is him.” She held on to the carrier as she returned her glance to Spock. “Please wait here.”

Spock couldn’t have said why he felt anxious that she took Jim with her, but he did. It was illogical. He’d brought Jim here for the Kirks to help him, naturally they were going to take charge of him.

But Spock did not like being parted from the cat, which made him realize he had more of an emotional attachment than he’d realized.

After a while it began to become clear that he’d been waiting for someone to return to his location for some time and Spock began to pace. His leg ached a bit from standing for so long and he was disinclined to rub it for he did not like to show weakness.

He heard a noise behind him and was about to turn when something struck him on the head.

Spock regained consciousness when someone shook him awake. He blinked up at a man in uniform.

“Sorry to wake you, sir, but we’ve reached out destination.”

“Destination?”

“Yes, sir. The shuttle has landed in San Francisco. Everyone else has already disembarked.”

Startled and not a little alarmed, Spock quickly looked about and saw that indeed he was on a shuttle. A now empty one.

Still a bit dazed, he got to his feet and stumbled out of the shuttle and into the bustling crowed of the San Francisco Shuttle Bay.

Clearly the Kirks had incapacitated him and sent him on his way back home.

He had lost Jim.

Yep totally left it on a bit of a mean cliffy! Bombaby/Jim will be back April 14!

*Because I got a weird question in Spam (sorry I don’t know if it was legitimate or not) this is entirely an AU. All my imagination related to the shapeshifting and nothing in Star Trek canon ever suggested Kirk was a shapeshifter (I’m surprised it has to be said)

Spock carried the cat carrier discreetly covered by a cloth as he prepared to board a passenger ship to Deneva.

He’d learned that was currently where the Kirk family was and if anyone could figure out how to help Jim Kirk, Spock imagined his own family of cat shifters would be where to start.

He’d also decided it was best to leave San Francisco for the time being so he had taken a leave of absence from teaching at the Academy.

The agent manning the gate before the entry to the ship eyed Spock. “What’s that you have?”

“A cat.”

The man peered under the cloth. “Pretty cat.”

“Indeed. He is my emotional support animal.”

“A Vulcan with an emotional support animal? Now I really have seen everything.”

“He keeps me calm and unemotional,” Spock replied, with a straight face.

The man waved toward the door. “Whatever. Go on ahead.”

Spock looked behind him before going up the ramp. He had no evidence that he and Jim were being followed, but clearly those who had abducted Jim were out to find him.

Once on the ship, Spock selected a seat in the back of the ship that faced the entrance so he could see all other occupants. He put the carrier on the empty seat next to him.

The flight was expected to take five hours and Spock hoped Jim would sleep through most of that. He, of course, would not.
As it turned out, the flight to Deneva was uneventful. There weren’t a lot of others traveling there so he’d been able to keep track of them easily.

Spock hadn’t let the Kirks know he was coming either as he hadn’t wanted anything traceable. So he exited the ship with Jim to go locate them.

Bombay

Spock now sat in his living room, cat on his lap, trying to wrap his logical mind as to why Commander James T. Kirk would be the cat that Spock had rescued and was now fostering.

A line from an old Earth’s scribe came to mind.

There are more things in Heaven and Earth, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.

From all accounts and Starfleet records, James Kirk was an ordinary Human. A brilliant, high-achieving one, notwithstanding. However, if the cat now staring at him with striking blue eyes was indeed Kirk than accounts were not accurate.

Now there was a chance that something on the planet the shuttlecraft had crashed on had somehow turned Kirk into the creature now in Spock’s apartment, but Spock didn’t think so.

He recalled after speaking with George Samuel Kirk that he read that the hole in the door of the shuttle had been too small for a Human to escape through, which was one of the reasons the authorities had decided that Kirk perished along with the others in the crash, even after not finding evidential remains. And that had been a logical conclusion if they did not have all the information needed to determine that.

But George Samuel Kirk had declared to Spock without hesitation that the hole in the door had been big enough for Jim. And if Kirk was in the form of this feline on his lap, that would make him fit through that hole.

Yet Kirk, if this was indeed somehow him, had not changed back to Human form.

“What are your secrets?” Spock asked Bombay.

Bombay made the tiniest of meow sounds, more like a kitten than a full-grown cat and then put his paw on Spock’s face.

Spock blinked at the cat. “You want me to meld with you?”

****

Spock had never taken the step to meld with an animal before. There’d been no reason, And yet if his theory was correct and this was somehow James Kirk, the cat was no ordinary animal.

Bombay’s paw had slipped off of Spock’s cheek but the feline remained staring fixedly at Spock.

Spock guessed given the appearance of the strange fedora man, someone wanted to find this cat whether or not he was Jim and the fact the man called the cat Kirk seemed to lend credence to his theory.

And that meant time was likely of the essence.

With a nod, Spock raised his hand toward Bombay’s had, being careful not to spook him in case he didn’t get what Spock was about to do. Bombay did not move as Spock gently probed his mind.

The Kirks were shapeshifters, animal shifters, cats to be exact. George Kirk’s father, Tiberius, had long ago made the decision to keep the family secret to avoid the possibility of captivity and experimentation they’d likely be subjected to. It came to the Kirks through a spousal connection. Some Kirk offspring had more abilities than others, George Samuel and James T. being among them.

Since his service with Starfleet, Jim had hidden this side of himself from everyone, even those he had trusted like his friend and colleague, Helen Moore. It hadn’t been easy since she was a physician and had noticed certain peculiarities about him. But Jim was certain she had never suspected the truth.

That was until the crash happened.

Jim had been forced to change in order to escape the wreckage of the shuttlecraft but upon exiting through the hole, he had been unable to change back to his human form as someone was waiting for him and had trapped him in an animal carrier.

Shortly after he was abducted, Jim learned that he had been set up by the now deceased Helen Moore who had somehow discovered what he was and had intended on turning him over to those waiting on the planet. But the shuttle had crash and she and several of her conspirators had perished there.

The original plan had been to claim to Jim’s captain that he had been killed in an accident on the planet, but everything had changed because of the crash.

His captors had managed to escape the Federation authorities and had take Jim in his feline form with them.

Over the course of the last years since Jim “disappeared” they had been experimenting on him and doing tests, basically torturing him, according to Jim.

More recently they had injected him with something that caused him to remain in cat form and that was when he escaped. Spock found him.

Spock lowered his hand from Bombay’s…Jim’s face.

“And now they have found you again.”
