Flash Fic, September 02, 2022

And so we begin with Starfleet Academy. Will these same Academy Spirk boys dominate the month? We shall see. But here is our first flash of September.

Spock could hear buzzing in his ears, which admittedly was the droning voice of his friend, Nyota Uhura, speaking to him about how excited she was to attend her first day of classes the following day.

It was not his intention to be rude but as they sat at a table in the cafeteria at Starfleet Academy he had noticed the arrival of a tall, sandy-haired, blue-eyed cadet.

“Spock, did you hear what I said?”

“I apologize—”

Her eyes narrowed as she followed his gaze. “What’s your interest in Kirk?”

“You know him?”

Nyota shrugged. “I met him briefly in Riverside as we were shipping out from there. There was a bar fight.”

“Was he injured?”

“Just…I mean sure. It was like three guys to his one. Just a bunch of macho men. Why do you care?”

“I will explain later. Please excuse me.” Spock rose then and went after the cadet. “Jim!”

Jim Kirk turned at the call of his name and turned to face Spock. He smiled brightly. “Spock? Is that really you?”

Spock reached him and barely refrained from reaching out to touch him. “Yes. I had not anticipated seeing you here. I had thought on my first break from school I would seek you out.”

“Yeah, I got talked into enlisting.” Jim laughed. “I thought you were going to the Vulcan Science Academy.”

“It is a bit of a story, but I changed my mind.”

“That’s great luck for me.” His eyes were shining. “When I left Vulcan I didn’t think we’d see each other for maybe years.”

“Same. Although as I said when I decided to come to this Academy, I did anticipate visiting your city.”

Jim put his hand on Spock’s arm. “I can’t believe you’re here. I’m…” He wet his lips with his tongue. “I’m a little thrilled.”

“I cannot deny a feeling of pleasure myself. When do you being your courses?”

“Not until tomorrow. I was just trying to get a feel for the place.”

“Do you have a dorm?”

Jim shook his head. “I’m supposed to go later this afternoon to get an assignment.”

Spock hesitated for only a second. But then with a slight hitch of breath, he said, “I have an apartment across the street from the campus. It would be perfect for sharing.”

Jim’s eyes widened. “You mean it?”

“I do. We can go and inform campus housing that you will no longer need to be assigned a dorm.”

Jim nodded and just stared at Spock.

“Jim?”

“Sorry, I’m just…really glad to be here and really glad to see you.”

“I assure you, it is mutual.”

And then as turned to walk together, side by side, it seemed the most natural thing. Spock looked forward to informing his mother of his good news.

Here’s the last one for Missions Gone Wrong

“I did say we shouldn’t respond to the distress signal.”

A muscle in Spock’s jaw jumped. “Our orders—”

“To hell with those orders. Look where it’s gotten us.”

Spock nodded. “You are tied to a tree while I await the bride chosen for me.”

“The Bride of Frankenstein.”

“Are you calling me Frankenstein, Captain?”

Jim frowned. “No, I’m saying—

“If she is my bride and she is the Bride of Frankenstein, then it stands to reason—”

“You know what? Forget it. No doubt she’ll be dead soon because you’ll bore her to death.”

Spock looked affronted. “That was quite unkind.”

“Well you know I get grumpy when I’m tied to a tree to be the sacrifice at my husband’s wedding to someone else. Imagine.”

Spock arched a brow. “While our current situation is challenging, including insults in our interactions are beneath you.”

“You’re going to be required to have public sex with her while they roast me alive!”

“Yes, that is what we face.”

Jim sighed and closed his eyes. “I don’t know how you can be so calm about my impending death.”

“I am hardly calm.”

“I’d hate to see you excited. Well, I’ve seen you excited. I mean, agitated.”

Spock actually rolled his eyes at him and Jim swore if he had his hands free he would be punching  Spock in the nose. But just then he heard sounds of the natives returning.

“Great. You may as well say your I love you and goodbye now, Spock.”

“I do love you, but this is not goodbye.”

“Spock—”

And suddenly just as he spotted Spock’s garishly decorated “bride” he felt his particles break up and reappeared on a transporter pad on the Enterprise.

Spock stood stoically beside him. “Good work, Mister Scott.”

“I just used the coordinates you transmitted, Commander.”

“Wait,” Jim exclaimed. “You had a way to get us out of there and you let me worry and freak out?”

“You seemed to be enjoying yourself, Captain.”

Enjoying myself? Tied up?!”

Spock shrugged. “There have been times when—”

“Shut up.”

“Captain, you have ropes around you,” Scotty pointed out.

“Spock, get these off me. Spock!”

Flash Fic, August 22, 2022

Leonard stopped Jim with a hand on his arm as they prepared to beam back to the Enterprise.

“Look, why are the natives angry?”

Jim shrugged. “The chieftain thinks I slept with his wife.”

“Jim!”

“Calm down, Bones. I didn’t, I swear.”

Leonard looked around nervously. “Where in tarnation is everyone? Why does he think that if it’s not true?”

“I guess she did sneak out of their home and meet with someone. I just know it wasn’t me.” Jim eyed his communicator. “We’ve got to get out of here stat.”

“Well where the hell are Spock and Chekov?”

Just as the words were out of Leonard’s mouth, Spock and Chekov rounded the corner with Chekov looking a little frantic.

“Keptin—”

“What is it, Ensign?”

Running behind them were the natives and they carried weapons.

“Go! Go!” Chekov screamed.

As the pair reached them, Jim flung open his communicator. “Scotty, beam us up now!”

Leonard grabbed on to Chekov to pull him closer just as a native raised a weapon in their direction, yelling, “Stop!”

A mere seconds later, the four of them appeared on the transporter pad of the Enterprise.

“Well that was close, wasn’t it?” Scotty exclaimed.

“Damnit, Jim.” Leonard stepped down. “That was way too close. And now you’re going to have to explain yourself to the ‘Fleet.”

Jim laughed. “I didn’t do anything!”

“Sure.”

“Bones—”

“What does the doctor think you did, Captain?” Spock asked, unerringly polite.

“They were after us because the chieftain thinks I slept with his wife. She snuck out of their domicile last night to meet with a lover.”

Scotty looked at Jim curiously. “And did you?”

Jim snorted. “No.”

“Come on, Jim. Nobody believes that.”

Chekov frowned. “I do.”

“Okay the kid here does. But Scotty and I know better.”

“Why do you believe the captain, lad?”

Chekov shrugged. “I saw who left the keptin’s tent this morning. It wasn’t the chieftain’s wife.”

Leonard frowned. “Who was it then?”

He noticed Jim and Spock heading for the exit.

“Mister Spock, of course.”

Leonard and Scotty both gaped at him.

Jim chuckled from the doors as they opened to allow him and Spock to escape.

Leonard sighed. “Next time I’ll mind my own business.”

TOS

“This is all Spock’s fault,” Bones grumbled as he was chained to a rock wall next to me. He rattled the chains when he shook his hands.

“Bones, just…”

“Am I wrong?”

I blew out a long breath, making a whistling noise through my nose. “Yes. Your constant haranguing of  Spock is getting on my last nerve, Bones. I don’t know why you can’t get along with him, but you give me a damn headache. Spock tried to prevent this whole mess and if it’s anybody’s fault—”

There was a loud splashing sound then, like a foot hitting a puddle in the stones that lead to where McCoy and I had been chained. The beat of my heart picked up as I realized this could be it.

After all the Klingons that had chained us here hinted at some creature that would be hungry from Human flesh. I thought it was all Klingon bluster and I hoped I was not wrong.

“Captain?”

“Spock?”

“Coming, Captain.”

And a moment later my first officer came into view. It took him only a short time to undo my chains and as my boots hit the solid ground I glanced toward Bones as Spock approached to let him out of the restraints.

“You sure you want to do that, Spock?” But I smiled to show Bones I was teasing.

“Har har,” Bones muttered as Spock got him out of the chains. “Thanks.”

Spock arched a brow but said nothing in response to Bones’ somewhat sour show of gratitude.

“The beam out location is this way,” Spock said and led the way.

As we followed after him, Bones stopped me with a hand on my arm. “Listen, Jim, about what I said back there. I was cranky and feeling—”

“A little afraid.” I nodded. “I know. Forget about it, Bones.”

Bones nodded. I hadn’t even told him that my relationship with Spock had been changing. There were some things that were better left private. At least for the time being.

Spock handed me my communicator. I smiled at him and flipped it open. “Scotty, beam us up!”

Here’s What I Have Decided

I’ve decided to make the next chapter of The Mysterious One the last chapter. I’m working on it. I began this work in 2018, so I feel it’s time. I will be leaving them with what is called a Happily For Now ending.

Fear not, though, this is not the end of my silver-eyed Jim and his “lionheart” warrior, Spock (see the song King and Lionheart as well as a Spirk video to it) and their offspring.

I am making it the “Supernatural Jim Kirk” series and The Mysterious One is part one. I will be writing more of their journey in part two. I will say in honesty that will not premiere until 2023.

And if you never read that one for whatever reason, you’ll at least have the ending of this one.

So there you have it.

And in keeping with the monthly theme

“I think this is it this time.”

Jim eyed his best friend as they leaned against rocks. They were stranded, there was no doubt about that. The shuttle they had taken to get to this godforsaken location on this damn rock had exploded and was beyond repair.

“ I don’t know why you say that,” Jim said, grimacing in pain.

He was pretty sure a bone was sticking out of his leg. He didn’t want to look. Bones’ arm was in a sling they’d made.

“No transportation, communicators not working to contact the ship, we’re the only survivors of the mission party.” Bones snorted. “Such as we are. I don’t know how it could get any worse.”

“Sure, there’s all that. But…”

When he didn’t continue, Bones, surprisingly, didn’t push him to.

Jim wasn’t even sure what he intended to say.   Like Bones he was feeling a little hopeless and it was getting harder to maintain optimism.

He leaned his head against the rock and closed his eyes.

He wanted to be rescued more than anything. In exactly two weeks he was supposed to go to New Vulcan with Spock and be formally bonded. It looked like now that was never going to happen.

And wow that was depressing. He could feel tears begin to sting his eyes. Just what he needed.

He forced them away somewhat angrily and was about to try to start some kind of conversation with Bones when the growling started.

The hairs on the nape of his neck went up.

Was that his imagination?

More low growling.

“Bones,” he whispered. “Bones, do you hear that?”

“Hear what?” Bones demanded, not quietly.

“Shh. I think some creature’s stalking us!”

“Stalking us? Jim—”

Just then a huge white creature with a horn on his head came into their vision. It howled menacingly and started toward them.

“You just had to ask how it could get worse,” Jim complained as he attempted to scramble to his feet.

“Jim, you can’t travel on that leg!”

Jim looked at him, incredulous. “So I should stay here and let him eat me?”

“No, but—”

The creature sped up then, like at a run to reach them just as Jim heard the sound of a familiar low whine of transportation.

“Oh please.”

And then just like that, his view of the creature with the horn on his head was replaced with a view of Spock standing in front of the transporter, hands calmly clenched behind his back, Scotty there at the controls.

“Told you I’d get them.”

“Indeed you did.”

“Spock!” And Jim fell to the ground just as Spock went to help him.

Flash Fic, August 01, 2022

We’ve hit another month, folks, and a new theme/pattern.

Every Monday for August you can expect our intrepid Spirk team to be facing some sort of mission peril. That’s Mondays only for August flashes (there could always be an extra or two)

Here’s the first

“It’s hot as Hades.”

Spock shot him a look. “May I remind you that I suggested you stay onboard the Enterprise for this mission.”

Jim snorted. “Even if I said no, you can’t, you know you would.”

“Perhaps.” Spock coughed. “The smoke is getting to be a bit much.”

Jim dared to look down to see the flames licking ever closer to where they were hogtied to a giant contraption that kept dropping lower and closer to the fire that was supposed to, er, theoretically, end their lives.

“I think I saw this is a movie once.”

“Only once?” Spock scoffed. “I’ve seen it myself more times.”

“It’s definitely overplayed.” Jim shifted in the ropes, trying to reach his communicator which he had thoughtlessly shoved into the back pocket of his regulation uniform pants. “Go ahead and say it.”

“What am I supposed to say?”

“This is another fine mess you’ve gotten us into, Captain.”

“There is nothing fine about this. Your trousers are too tight.”

Jim moaned as he tried to maneuver his arm. “Damn that hurts. If I don’t get to this thing soon my pants will be burned right off me.”

“Chances are more likely that the material of the pants will stick to your burned flesh.”

“Reassuring, Mister Spock.”

“What are you doing?”

“I saw this guy dislocate his shoulder once so he could get out of a binding.”

“You saw this yourself?”

“In a movie, yeah.”

“We are doomed.”

“Now, don’t say that.” Jim shrugged, wrangled, and scooted. Finally his aching arm slipped from the knot and his hand into the pocket. He got it open too. “Kirk to Enterprise. Scotty, beam us up now!”

With a splat he and Spock landed on the transporter, free of the contraption, but not their binds.

“Jim!” McCoy came rushing toward them.

“See?” Jim said. “Told you I’d get us—” He blacked out.

Okay Folks

A Heart Needs a Second Chance (the title of the cheating Jim story, it’s a line from 38 Special’s Second Chance) is going live. I already wrote it so it only required me to fix a few errors so I thought now’s a good time to post it

Christmas in July, Flash Fic July 29, 2022

This might seem a little close to the last one but they aren’t related, I just got this idea stuck in my head so used it more than once

“What is the meaning of this?” Spock asked as he stepped into the ship’s rec room. All around him numerous crew members decorated the room with garish green and red decorations. Some crew members stood on ladders to hang fake snowflakes from the ceilings. “Mister Sulu, I command you to answer.”

Sulu, who at the moment wore an outlandish red hat with a green pompom on the end, glanced his way. “Captain’s orders, sir.”

Captain’s orders?” Spock supposed he should have guessed. “What is this supposed to be? Besides clearly a violation of regulations concerning the banning of—”

“Didn’t know we had our own Grinch on board,” Giotto mumbled from the other side of Sulu.

“It’s Christmas in July, Commander,” Sulu explained. “The morale’s been low so the captain thought something like this might cheer everyone up.”

Spock narrowed his eyes and surveyed the room for signs of the Human himself. Across the room near the door on the other side of the rec room stood Kirk. He had the opposite hat of Sulu’s, his being green with a red pompom. He was gesturing wildly to Nyota who stood with him, nodding, and typing into her PADD.

At that moment, Kirk’s yeoman appeared and handed him a PADD, which he took with a smile. She said something to him, shaking her head, and then he looked down at the PADD and his smile disappeared.

“I will go and speak to the captain about this senseless frivolity.”

“You do that, sir,” Sulu said, turning his back on Spock.

As soon as Spock made it across the room, he first stopped to speak with Nyota. “Surely you have not agreed to participate in this.”

She shrugged. “It’s fun. Harmless. Just a bit of entertainment considering the last few months we’ve had. I was just going over the menu for the dinner.”

“The menu…this entire event violates regulations concerning the recognition of non-exclusive—”

“Oh shut up, Spock. No one’s being excluded. And by the way, I’m not with you anymore so I don’t have to listen to this.” She flipped her pony tail and stalked off to talk to Engineer Scott.

Spock turned to the captain. “Captain Kirk, this entire affair is against regulations and you—”

Kirk looked up at him, his blue eyes troubled and haunted looking. “Tear it all down then. I don’t care.”

And he walked away and out of the rec room entirely.

Nyota returned to his side. “What did you just do?”

“I-I did nothing. I just attempted to…” Spock closed his mouth. “Please excuse me.”

****

After the captain ignored his attempts at his main door, Spock went through their shared bathroom to reach him. He didn’t want to violate Jim’s privacy this way but it seemed necessary in this instance.

Jim stood in the middle of his quarters, PADD clenched so tightly in his hands his knuckles were colorless. He just stared in front of him, though he did finally glace at Spock upon Spock’s approach.

“What do you want, Spock?”

“What has happened?”

Jim shook his head. “Nothing.”

“I can see that is a lie. Perhaps I allowed my irritation at the recreational festivities to get out of hand, but there is surely something more bothering you.”

“It’s just for the crew, Spock. They need something to make them smile even if it’s just for a few hours. There’s been…it’s a lot to deal with.”

“Acknowledged,” Spock said, finally. “I withdraw my objection. Will you tell me what has happened now?”

Jim pursed his lips. “My grandmother died.” He sighed. “I guess she died a-a few months back, but I just got word.”

“I grieve with thee.”

“There was a time when I thought she was the only one who cared about me.”

“I doubt that was true at the time and I know it is not true now.”

Jim gave him his faint little smile. “I spent time with her as a kid. We had a lot of fun together. And love.”

“Was this your mother’s mother or your father’s?”

“Mom’s. Dad’s parents died before he did. I guess at least they were spared that. My grandmother was the first one who celebrated Christmas in July with me. Even then it was just…complete silliness. But we had a blast together.”

Spock nodded. “I can see that I have quite a lot to learn.” He stepped close to Jim. “Most especially about you.”

“Do you really think you will like learning more?”

Spock kissed him. “I know it.”

And that’s a wrap (Christmas Wrap) on this year’s festivities. Thanks!
