And in keeping with the monthly theme

“I think this is it this time.”

Jim eyed his best friend as they leaned against rocks. They were stranded, there was no doubt about that. The shuttle they had taken to get to this godforsaken location on this damn rock had exploded and was beyond repair.

“ I don’t know why you say that,” Jim said, grimacing in pain.

He was pretty sure a bone was sticking out of his leg. He didn’t want to look. Bones’ arm was in a sling they’d made.

“No transportation, communicators not working to contact the ship, we’re the only survivors of the mission party.” Bones snorted. “Such as we are. I don’t know how it could get any worse.”

“Sure, there’s all that. But…”

When he didn’t continue, Bones, surprisingly, didn’t push him to.

Jim wasn’t even sure what he intended to say.   Like Bones he was feeling a little hopeless and it was getting harder to maintain optimism.

He leaned his head against the rock and closed his eyes.

He wanted to be rescued more than anything. In exactly two weeks he was supposed to go to New Vulcan with Spock and be formally bonded. It looked like now that was never going to happen.

And wow that was depressing. He could feel tears begin to sting his eyes. Just what he needed.

He forced them away somewhat angrily and was about to try to start some kind of conversation with Bones when the growling started.

The hairs on the nape of his neck went up.

Was that his imagination?

More low growling.

“Bones,” he whispered. “Bones, do you hear that?”

“Hear what?” Bones demanded, not quietly.

“Shh. I think some creature’s stalking us!”

“Stalking us? Jim—”

Just then a huge white creature with a horn on his head came into their vision. It howled menacingly and started toward them.

“You just had to ask how it could get worse,” Jim complained as he attempted to scramble to his feet.

“Jim, you can’t travel on that leg!”

Jim looked at him, incredulous. “So I should stay here and let him eat me?”

“No, but—”

The creature sped up then, like at a run to reach them just as Jim heard the sound of a familiar low whine of transportation.

“Oh please.”

And then just like that, his view of the creature with the horn on his head was replaced with a view of Spock standing in front of the transporter, hands calmly clenched behind his back, Scotty there at the controls.

“Told you I’d get them.”

“Indeed you did.”

“Spock!” And Jim fell to the ground just as Spock went to help him.

Flash Fic, August 01, 2022

We’ve hit another month, folks, and a new theme/pattern.

Every Monday for August you can expect our intrepid Spirk team to be facing some sort of mission peril. That’s Mondays only for August flashes (there could always be an extra or two)

Here’s the first

“It’s hot as Hades.”

Spock shot him a look. “May I remind you that I suggested you stay onboard the Enterprise for this mission.”

Jim snorted. “Even if I said no, you can’t, you know you would.”

“Perhaps.” Spock coughed. “The smoke is getting to be a bit much.”

Jim dared to look down to see the flames licking ever closer to where they were hogtied to a giant contraption that kept dropping lower and closer to the fire that was supposed to, er, theoretically, end their lives.

“I think I saw this is a movie once.”

“Only once?” Spock scoffed. “I’ve seen it myself more times.”

“It’s definitely overplayed.” Jim shifted in the ropes, trying to reach his communicator which he had thoughtlessly shoved into the back pocket of his regulation uniform pants. “Go ahead and say it.”

“What am I supposed to say?”

“This is another fine mess you’ve gotten us into, Captain.”

“There is nothing fine about this. Your trousers are too tight.”

Jim moaned as he tried to maneuver his arm. “Damn that hurts. If I don’t get to this thing soon my pants will be burned right off me.”

“Chances are more likely that the material of the pants will stick to your burned flesh.”

“Reassuring, Mister Spock.”

“What are you doing?”

“I saw this guy dislocate his shoulder once so he could get out of a binding.”

“You saw this yourself?”

“In a movie, yeah.”

“We are doomed.”

“Now, don’t say that.” Jim shrugged, wrangled, and scooted. Finally his aching arm slipped from the knot and his hand into the pocket. He got it open too. “Kirk to Enterprise. Scotty, beam us up now!”

With a splat he and Spock landed on the transporter, free of the contraption, but not their binds.

“Jim!” McCoy came rushing toward them.

“See?” Jim said. “Told you I’d get us—” He blacked out.

Christmas in July, Flash Fic July 29, 2022

This might seem a little close to the last one but they aren’t related, I just got this idea stuck in my head so used it more than once

“What is the meaning of this?” Spock asked as he stepped into the ship’s rec room. All around him numerous crew members decorated the room with garish green and red decorations. Some crew members stood on ladders to hang fake snowflakes from the ceilings. “Mister Sulu, I command you to answer.”

Sulu, who at the moment wore an outlandish red hat with a green pompom on the end, glanced his way. “Captain’s orders, sir.”

Captain’s orders?” Spock supposed he should have guessed. “What is this supposed to be? Besides clearly a violation of regulations concerning the banning of—”

“Didn’t know we had our own Grinch on board,” Giotto mumbled from the other side of Sulu.

“It’s Christmas in July, Commander,” Sulu explained. “The morale’s been low so the captain thought something like this might cheer everyone up.”

Spock narrowed his eyes and surveyed the room for signs of the Human himself. Across the room near the door on the other side of the rec room stood Kirk. He had the opposite hat of Sulu’s, his being green with a red pompom. He was gesturing wildly to Nyota who stood with him, nodding, and typing into her PADD.

At that moment, Kirk’s yeoman appeared and handed him a PADD, which he took with a smile. She said something to him, shaking her head, and then he looked down at the PADD and his smile disappeared.

“I will go and speak to the captain about this senseless frivolity.”

“You do that, sir,” Sulu said, turning his back on Spock.

As soon as Spock made it across the room, he first stopped to speak with Nyota. “Surely you have not agreed to participate in this.”

She shrugged. “It’s fun. Harmless. Just a bit of entertainment considering the last few months we’ve had. I was just going over the menu for the dinner.”

“The menu…this entire event violates regulations concerning the recognition of non-exclusive—”

“Oh shut up, Spock. No one’s being excluded. And by the way, I’m not with you anymore so I don’t have to listen to this.” She flipped her pony tail and stalked off to talk to Engineer Scott.

Spock turned to the captain. “Captain Kirk, this entire affair is against regulations and you—”

Kirk looked up at him, his blue eyes troubled and haunted looking. “Tear it all down then. I don’t care.”

And he walked away and out of the rec room entirely.

Nyota returned to his side. “What did you just do?”

“I-I did nothing. I just attempted to…” Spock closed his mouth. “Please excuse me.”

****

After the captain ignored his attempts at his main door, Spock went through their shared bathroom to reach him. He didn’t want to violate Jim’s privacy this way but it seemed necessary in this instance.

Jim stood in the middle of his quarters, PADD clenched so tightly in his hands his knuckles were colorless. He just stared in front of him, though he did finally glace at Spock upon Spock’s approach.

“What do you want, Spock?”

“What has happened?”

Jim shook his head. “Nothing.”

“I can see that is a lie. Perhaps I allowed my irritation at the recreational festivities to get out of hand, but there is surely something more bothering you.”

“It’s just for the crew, Spock. They need something to make them smile even if it’s just for a few hours. There’s been…it’s a lot to deal with.”

“Acknowledged,” Spock said, finally. “I withdraw my objection. Will you tell me what has happened now?”

Jim pursed his lips. “My grandmother died.” He sighed. “I guess she died a-a few months back, but I just got word.”

“I grieve with thee.”

“There was a time when I thought she was the only one who cared about me.”

“I doubt that was true at the time and I know it is not true now.”

Jim gave him his faint little smile. “I spent time with her as a kid. We had a lot of fun together. And love.”

“Was this your mother’s mother or your father’s?”

“Mom’s. Dad’s parents died before he did. I guess at least they were spared that. My grandmother was the first one who celebrated Christmas in July with me. Even then it was just…complete silliness. But we had a blast together.”

Spock nodded. “I can see that I have quite a lot to learn.” He stepped close to Jim. “Most especially about you.”

“Do you really think you will like learning more?”

Spock kissed him. “I know it.”

And that’s a wrap (Christmas Wrap) on this year’s festivities. Thanks!

“You know I’ve been thinking.”

“Almost always a bad thing.” His CMO, Leonard “Bones” McCoy didn’t even look up from his usual slouching over his cup of coffee.

“The crew morale took a serious hit recently,” Jim continued, unwilling to pay particular attention to grumpy Bones.

“Generally being attacked by Klingons and Romulans in the same week has that affect.”

“Exactly. So we need a distraction. Scotty can even make snow.”

Bones’ gaze finally rose to Jim’s smiling face. “Snow? For what?”

“Christmas in July. Or you know, a Holiday Extravaganza in July or Winter Wonderland in July. You know for those that don’t celebrate or care about Christmas. We can have snow and all the usual festivities. Eggnog, Rum Punch, Cookies, Presents, Santa. Everything.”

Bones stared hard at him. “What does your FOSO think?”

Jim frowned. “My what?”

His friend smirked. “First Officer Significant Other.”

“Did someone mention me?” Spock took his seat beside Jim, slamming his breakfast tray down on the table so hard that his bowl of goopy looking oatmeal bounced.

“You okay?”

“In fact I am not. I have had a disagreement with my father.”

Jim looked at him warily. “Again? What’s up his…what’s his issue this time?”

“He has expanded the list of who he intends to invite to our bonding ceremony on New Vulcan in October,” Spock explained.

“What you two need is a wedding planner,” Bones butted in. “Or, uh, a bonding ceremony planner. They can run interference between you two and your respective parents.”

Jim grinned. “You volunteering?”

“Not even if I was the last guy in the universe.”

“Nor would we ask you if you were,” Spock added testily. “What did Leonard mean when he asked what I thought?”

“You know you’re my FOSO?”

Spock shrugged. “The meaning was logically easy to figure out.”

“Hmm.”

“See Jim? Spock thinks I’m logical.”

“Especially if you are an expert at figuring out the nonsensical things the doctor comes up with.”

Jim chuckled. “He wanted to know what you think of Christmas in July.”

“In point of fact I do not think of it at all.”

“Well, start. Because we’re planning on one for the ship.”

Spock grimaced and poked his spoon at his oatmeal.

“Commander?” Jim deliberately used his authority voice.

“Yes, of course, Captain.”

Jim rubbed his hands together. “This is going to be great.”

“Perhaps you would like to speak with Sarek about our bonding ceremony.”

Jim nodded. “Oh, sure sure. I’ll take care of that too. Piece of cake.”

Spock looked away just as Jim caught him rolling his eyes.

It would be easy as he intended to let Sarek invite whoever he wished. He smiled and began to plan Christmas in July for the crew and as he eyed Bones, he knew just who he’d get to be Santa.

Christmas in July, Flash Fic July 22, 2022

Who can resist the guys with a little girl?

“Are you sure you’ll be back for Christmas?”

Jim looked down at the little girl with long golden curls and pointed ears.

“Well. Pretty sure.”

She stuck out her plump bottom lip. “You should promise.”

Jim smiled and crouched down beside her. “I can’t promise, angel. There are far too many variables.”

“You sound like Father”

“How about in the meantime we do something my mom did when I was a kid?”

“What?”

“Christmas in July.”

She looked at him doubtfully. “In July? That’s not logical!”

“Probably not. But see my mom wasn’t going to be around for Christmas, so she decided to give me and my brother Christmas in the summer when she was there. We decorated a tree, and sang songs, and watched movies, and even had presents.”

“But.” Her lip trembled. “If we do Christmas now, doesn’t that mean you for sure won’t be home for real Christmas?”

“No, it doesn’t mean that.”

“How will Santa know to come now?”

Jim smiled. “He won’t. Santa’s real busy right now getting ready for Christmas in December, so for this little mini Christmas your father and I will handle everything. We don’t want to overwhelm Santa.”

She smiled too, her eyes sparkling for the first time that morning. She clapped her hands. “Yay.”

“Want to make gingerbread?”

“With Father too.” She lost her smile just a bit. “You think he’s not busy?”

“Oh, he’s never too busy for that. Let’s go ask him.”

Jim contacted Spock through the bond so that as soon as they reached him, he would know.

“Father, are you—”

Spock’s gaze met Jim’s before going down to their little girl. “Did someone say Christmas?”

That’s the scoop folks!

Christmas in July, Flash Fic July 20, 2022

The Pinto Boys from The Thought of You is Consuming Me was requested, but of course they wouldn’t have any clue about Christmas in July (or many of our modern traditions but I have done my best!

As I rested next to Chris in the middle of a field of grass on my property, I felt at peace in a way I had never felt in London proper. I spent the time I needed to in London, of course, but it was less and less all the time, as I preferred solitude here.

And Chris and I seemed to have more time together here.

“It’s going to rain later.”

I opened my eyes, turned my head, and peered at him. I had thought he was napping so I was surprised to see the wide-eyed alert in those blue eyes that so matched the blue of the sky.

“There’s not a cloud in the sky, love,” I replied.

He smiled. “Mark my words.” He sighed then, soft, and perhaps a bit regretful.

“What? Is it time to go back then?”

“Not quite. Soon though. I just wish that it was December.”

“Fond of snow, are you?”

He laughed. “No, dearest. Christmastide and all that. My favorite time of year.”

“You’ve got a good five months until then, Christopher.”

“A man can fantasize.”

I snorted. Overhead I was surprised when clouds started to roll in. I turned my head to glance at him once more and saw that he was smirking at me.

“What clever magic is this?”

“No magic, Zach. Wisdom.”

I laughed outright and straightened to hover over him as he gazed up at me with a twinkle in his eyes.

“Wisdom is it?”

“Hmm. Can we do this in December at Christmas, do you think?”

“As long as we don’t freeze particular parts off.”

He tugged me down for a kiss. “Don’t want to do that. I find yours quite useful.”

I arched a brow. “Do you now?”

“And speaking of fantasies. I suggest we go inside and act out one of yours before the rain starts.”

“The king and his knight?”

Chris laughed and sat up. “Of course. But this time…I’m the king.”

“My T’hy’la is here.” Spock made the announcement as he and his friend, Nyota Uhura, stepped through the doors of Starfleet Academy’s Auditorium.

It was currently set up to look like a Winter Wonderland even though it was 35 degrees Celsius outside. Silvery crystal snowflakes hung from the ceiling. In the corner, students could have their photo taken with the Abominable Snowman. Christmas cookies and peppermint mochas were for sale.

“What?”

“I feel him. He is here.”

She glanced at him. “Are you sure, Spock? I’m pretty certain he left for the summer.”

“I am positive.” Spock stopped to glance around the crowded place.

“Even if he is, are you sure you should seek him out? Things did not end well between you last time and—”

“Hello, Spock. Uhura.”

Jim Kirk had suddenly appeared out of seemingly nowhere, though Spock had known he was there. He was dressed from head to toe in some silver and white costume with a crystal crown upon his head.

“What are you supposed to be?” Nyota asked.

“I’m the Snow King for the festival.”

Nyota looked at Spock, then touched the arm of his sleeve. “I’ll, uh, be over there getting some spiked egg nog.”

Jim’s gaze followed her before those eyes blue as the ice that seemed to surround them returned to Spock.

“Well?”

“I…I didn’t expect to see you here.”

“I bet.”

“We had heard you left San Francisco for the summer.”

“We?”

“You have to know she is nothing to me.”

Jim winced. “Ouch.”

“You know what I mean. She is a friend only. You are my everything. And I have…it is unbearable without you.”

Jim smirked. “Unbearable is nice.”

“Jim,” was Spock’s plea.

Jim sighed. “I’m not sure you’ve groveled near enough, but, I’m a sucker for that face. And that body. And those lips. And—”

“I am a sucker for you also.”

Jim laughed. Grabbed Spock’s hand and pulled him along. “Come, you can be my consort.”

An extra!

Photo by ANTONI SHKRABA on Pexels.com

A hundred years ago I wrote a hurt/comfort story called By His Side. It had everything. Jim severely injured, Gary plotting, a devoted Spock, Spock got poisoned, Jim beat Gary, and in the end they lived quite happily ever after.

I wrote By His Side in 2015.

I thought it might be fun to check in with these two.

Merry Christmas.

“I never thought I’d ever be able to have this.”

Spock gazed upon the tiny infant in the bassinet between them on their bed. Then he glanced at his husband and mate.

“It took a bit of planning but he is beautiful.”

“Best Christmas present ever,” Jim declared.

Spock blinked. “Jim, perhaps the heat is getting to you, my adorable one, but it is July not the month of December.”

Jim laughed. “I know, sugar. But way back in December we started planning for him.” He paused. “Actually the previous Christmas. Don’t you remember? I put baby booties in your stocking to see how you’d react.”

“It was most puzzling.”

“Then we talked and talked and this past Christmas we started the adoption process. It just took this long for us to finally have him.” Jim reached down to pick up their son.

“Jim, he will never rest if you constantly pick him up to hold him.”

“He can fall asleep in my arms.”

“Mm.”

“Does he look like you or me?”

“Since neither of us share DNA with him, he looks like his biological parents.”

Jim sighed and nodded. “I’m sorry they had to die on that ship explosion for us to get him.”

Spock touched Jim’s hand. “I know you think about the loss of your own father in such circumstances.”

“Yeah. Anyway, can we call him George Sarek?”

“Or perhaps Sarek George,” Sarek said from the doorway of their bedroom.

“Father, I thought you were not arriving for another few hours.”

“I took an early shuttle to see my grandson.” Sarek smoothly stole the child out of Jim’s arms.

Jim didn’t mind.

Jim put his arm around Spock and leaned in to kiss him. “So, you know, Merry Christmas in July. For our best present ever.”

“Indeed.”

“And thank you. For being here, with me.” Jim paused. “By my side.”

Spock’s eyes sparkled. “Always.”
