From The Matchmaker

“Where is Jim?”

Spock looked up from the book he was reading to gaze into the consternated eyes of his young nephew.

“Vanik. You let yourself in again.”

“Affirmative.”

“Now that Jim lives with me it is not appropriate for you to show up in our apartment unannounced.” He really didn’t think it was appropriate before either, but he would not bring that up again. “Jim values his privacy.”

Vanik nodded. “Understood. In the future I will knock loudly on the door so that neither of you are surprised by my arrival. But…where is Jim? I thought for a moment that you had already managed to chase him away.”

“Vanik.”

The boy shrugged, a smile tugging at his lips. “A small jest at your expense.”

“Clearly.” Spock put his book down. “Why are you looking for Jim?”

“More specifically I am looking for you to learn what you have planned for your anniversary.”

“My what?”

“Anniversary. Approximately six months ago, you and Jim met, which set you on the course to become the brilliant example of couplehood that you are now.” Vanik straightened. “I could take full credit for that, but I believe that would be unfair to Jim. He had something to do with it as well.”

“And I have not?”

“Not much. You are…obtuse. In any case, what have you got planned?”

Spock paused. Glanced around the apartment. “Nothing.”

“Nothing? No Christmas in July celebration?”

“I do not participate in the merriment that surrounds Christmas, why would I have Christmas in July?”

“Because Jim does.”

“Well. But we were not yet engaged in our ‘brilliant couplehood’, as you put it, last Christmas.”

“All the more reason,” Vanik said, with a dramatic pause, “that you should do something to mark the occasion now.”

Spock shook his head and rose from the couch, followed by Vanik, into the kitchen. “I really do not believe that is necessary. Jim has not mentioned a particular interest in such frivolities.”

“As to that, since you are, obtuse, I am not certain that is the case.”

“Stop saying I am obtuse.” He sounded mulish to his own words.

Vanik waved this away. “It is not something you can help. It is what it is. Kaiidth.”

“You have been paying far too much attention to your father lately.” He reached into the fridge for the pitcher of iced tea. He took out two glasses from the cabinet. Shook his head at Vanik when he put out his hand for one. “This is for Jim who should be home any moment. You are not staying.”

As if Spock had conjured him, and he would if he had the power, the door of the apartment opened and Jim, dressed in his red cadet’s uniform stepped inside.

“Oh. Hey. Hi Vanik. Didn’t know you were coming.”

“No one did,” Spock said, pointedly. “And he was leaving.”

Vanik gave him a petulant pout before turning to Jim. “I was under the impression the Academy was out for a few weeks due to the summer holidays.”

Jim smiled. “I enrolled in the summer program to get ahead of everyone in the command track.”

“Oh. That is logical. Happy Anniversary.”

Spock cleared his throat loudly but his nephew ignored him.

Jim looked at Vanik quizzically. “Anniversary?”

“Six months since you and my uncle met. Does no one understand the significance but me?”

Jim laughed. “Um. Sure, kid. It’s definitely significant. And Spock and I love that you remembered. You’re so cute.”

Spock was amused when Vanik blushed.

“I am sure your mother would appreciate you returning home as quickly as possible,” Spock told Vanik.

Vanik sighed and nodded. “Very well. Do try to do something celebratory in my absence.”

Jim’s smile widened. “I’m sure we’ll think of something.”

Spock walked his nephew over to the door and watched him leave. “Let us know you made it home safely,” he reminded Vanik.

After closing the door, Spock turned to Jim. “Welcome home.”

“Thanks, Spock.” Jim gave him a lingering kiss. He grinned. “And about that celebration…”

Cadet Ashayam and our chocolate loving Vulcan…

“On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me, a partridge in a pear tree.”

“On the second day of Christmas, my true love gave to me, two turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree.”

Spock looked up from his terminal to stare at his beloved, who was currently baking something in the kitchen of their apartment. He wore an apron that declared “Kiss the Cook”, a very thin blue T-shirt that matched the blue of his eyes, and jeans slung low on his hips and ass.

Which managed to distract Spock from what he was about to say.

“On the third day of Christmas, my true love gave to me three French Hens, Two—

“Jim.”

“Turtle Doves…”

“Cadet.”

“And a partridge in a pear tree.”

Ashayam.”

“On the fourth…oh. Yeah, babe?” Jim had been leaning over putting a cookie sheet into their oven. Now he straightened and turned toward Spock.

“It is July.”

Jim smiled. “Yeah. I know. And?”

“Currently, we have the apartment being cooled by central air as it is one hundred degrees Fahrenheit outside.”

“Yep. Boiling out,” Jim agreed.

Spock nodded. “Correct me if I am wrong, but is that not a song you made me sing at holiday time with you when we were intoxicated on chocolate peanut butter martinis?”

Jim’s sweet smile widened into a huge grin. “That was a good time.”

“It was. But, then it is true, correct? That was the song.”

“Yeah.”

“Then…”

“Christmas in July, Spock.”

Spock leaned back in his chair and eyed his boyfriend. “Is that really a thing?”

“You bet your sweet Vulcan ass it is.”

“Mm. What are you doing?”

“Making cookies.”

“What sort of cookies?”

“Gingerbread men. And women. People. A sehlat or two.”

Spock sniffed. “It does smell appealing. But is that not also a winter treat.”

“Sure. But in the spirit of Christmas in July…” Jim shrugged. “Since the air’s on anyway, I figure you wouldn’t mind a few cool weather treats. Like the gingerbread. And some peppermint mochas.”

“Mochas?”

Jim nodded. “Yep. Extra chocolate in yours.”

Spock licked his lips. His gaze strayed to the tests he was grading. They were not due until Monday and it was only Friday night, but Spock did like to be efficient.

“Chocolate whip cream too.”

Spock pushed back from his desk and stood up. “The tests can wait.”

“That’s the Christmas spirit!”

“I now declare my independence,” Jim said as he walked beside Bones.

Bones smirked. “From Gary?”

“Gary and from all others. No more relationships, Bones. I am footloose and fancy free.” Jim turned around and started walking backwards, doing a little foot work as he did so, laughing at the look Bones was giving him.

He turned around then and walked straight into…

“Oomph.” Jim staggered back and a hand shot out to steady him. He felt himself blushing hot. And staring into the most beautiful pair of dark eyes he’d ever seen. “Uh. Hi. And, um, sorry.”

The guy, a Vulcan, arched a brow. “That was quite a dance.”

“Uh.” Jim laughed uncomfortably. “Yeah. I was…sort of celebrating. Jim Kirk.”

“Spock. What were you celebrating?”

“A, uh.” He moistened his lips. “A break up.”

“How fortunate.”

“It is?”

“For me,” Spock said, matter-of-fact. “Dinner?”

Jim heard Bones coughing nearby.

He ignored him.

Smiled.

“Yeah. Dinner sounds great.”

Happy Independence Day!

“What?”

“I said…you’re pregnant,” Bones repeated.

“I heard you.”

“Then why’d you say what?”

“Because…what?”

“Jim.”

“Bones, that’s crazy. I’ve just started the Academy. How am I going to complete all my courses, how am I going to command a ship…how am I going to tell…”

“Spock.”

“Well, duh, but can you give me some…”

“No.” Bones nudged him. “Doorway.”

Jim turned, eyes wide, to see Spock standing in the doorway of the exam room.

“I was told you fainted and were being examined. Are you all right?” Spock rushed toward him.

“Uh.”

“T’hy’la?” When Jim did not answer at once, Spock looked to McCoy. “Doctor?”

“He’s fine, Spock. You don’t need to worry.” Bones patted Jim’s arm. “I’m going to go get you a peanut butter milkshake. Give you a chance to talk.”

Spock watched Bones go. He looked back to Jim. “What?”

“Well, Spock, it’s like this…”

“Spock! Please. Bones…you have to…”

The voice was distant, far away. And it sounded tinny, hollow.

“It’s all my fault, Bones. You have to save him.”

“Jim I’m doing the best I can. There’s a lot of damage—”

The pain was excruciating. Almost too much to bear. In fact, perhaps…

“God, Bones. I love him so much. Please.”

Love.

Yes. He loved Jim. Jim loved him.

“It’s my fault. I was distracted by this stupid Sam thing and I wasn’t paying attention and he stepped in and saved me. Bones…”

The sounds, the voice, faded as he went into a trance.

“He’s coming around. Jim!”

It was almost impossible to come out of the trance and for a moment, Spock wondered if Leonard or someone would have to strike him. He didn’t think Jim would.

But then with extreme effort, he forced his eyes opened and gasped for breath.

“Spock!”

Jim was there, hovering directly over him, his face pale, his blue eyes huge in his face.

“Jim,” he whispered.

He saw that Jim was crying, and was alarmed, but then Jim leaned down to kiss his lips and Spock tasted his salty tears.

Jim pulled back just a little. “I’m sorry. I’m just so happy you’re okay.”

“I am not sorry,” Spock told him. “I love you as well.”

Jim sucked in a breath. “You heard me?”

“Yes, ashaya.”

“Spock, I’m so sorry you got hurt because of me. I was…”

“It was not your fault. I simply moved too slowly. And if I prevented your death, as I suspect I did, then none of it matters.”

“It matters to me.”

Spock took the hand that Jim offered. “We can discuss all that later and everything else between us. And what is going on with your brother.”

“Yeah, I…” Jim blew out a breath. “It’s nothing compared to this. To you. But yes, I am sure you’re tired and need sleep.”

“Jim! What are you doing? Stop crawling into Spock’s bed with him! Jim!”

Spock simply pulled Jim close and Jim wrapped his arms around Spock, careful not to place them anywhere that might injure Spock.

Spock met the doctor’s eyes, who rolled them, and then sighed.

“Fine. Nobody listens to me.”

He turned down the light and Spock fell asleep in Jim’s arms.

“You have been very preoccupied of late,” Spock ventured to say over a chess game with his captain.

Jim looked up from the chessboard. He was looking at Spock, but there was a definite sort of distracted, vacant look in his blue eyes that rather unnerved Spock.

Over the last few days he had been considering confessing the dept of his regard for Jim, but his captain’s recent behavior did not encourage such a conversation.

Logically, Spock doubted that he was the cause of Jim’s off behavior. But he could not be one hundred percent certain either.

Whatever or whoever the cause was, Spock was concerned.

Jim smiled but it turned into a sort of grimace as he picked up and then put down his chess piece. Then he leaned back and sighed.

“Sorry, Spock, not really into chess right now.”

“I can see that. If you would like to discuss whatever is occupying your thoughts, I am more than happy to listen.”

The smile he got this time was a little more genuine but also more distant. “Nah, it’s-it’s nothing. Um. How are you, anyway?”

“Me, Captain?”

“Yeah. You know with Uhura. The-the breakup.” Jim scrunched up his face and then shook his head. “That did happen right?”

“Yes. We are no longer in a relationship. So far, there has been no difficulties for either of us.”

Jim nodded, but Spock got the distinct impression Jim wasn’t even listening to him.

“Good. I’m uh I’m going to go back to my quarters. I’m sorry, Spock. I know I’m being weird. I’m just…I have a lot on my mind right now.”

“Jim…”

He smiled again, shook his head, and headed for the door to exit Spock’s quarters.

And he was gone like that before Spock could say more.

Spock closed his eyes and sighed.

Random Thoughts

“To what do I owe this unexpected thrill?” McCoy asked, predictably, sarcastically. “You sick?”

“Negative.” Spock was already rethinking this. It was…at the very least, ill timed. And definitely ill-advised.

“Spock?”

“Nyota and I ended our relationship.”

“Again? What was it this time? You aren’t leaving again, are you?” McCoy downed the glass of whiskey he held. “Not that it matters to me or anything. But Jim.”

“Is drinking in the med bay a wise choice, doctor?”

McCoy rolled his eyes.

“I am not leaving. We decided to end our relationship mutually. We no longer find fullfillment.”

McCoy snorted. “Sounds like she said that.” He shook his head. “I have familiarity with divorces.”

“We were not married.”

“And that right there is probably why she broke up with you, Spock. You’ve been together for a while and never got to that point. Ever wonder why?”

Of course he did, but he was not prepared to speak with McCoy about that. And certainly not now.

“Thank you for your time, doctor.”

“Well, but why’d you come here? What did you want?”

“I had a headache and wondered if you had something that would not turn my stomach.”

“I’ve got a shot but…”

Spock nodded and backed away. “I will pass and work through it.”

He returned to his quarters, stopped briefly before Jim’s, but then continued to his own door.
