βGeez, Iβve never been so cold in my life,β Jim complained. Heβd been fiddling with the heater controls in the farmhouse for what seemed like hours but was likely no more than twenty minutes. βWhat kind of moron decides to arrive in the middle of the worst blizzard to hit Riverside in decades.β
βWhen the plans were made, no blizzard was anticipated,β the robot replied.
Okay, he supposed that was unfair. The robot was Spock and he wasnβt really a robot. Still, Jim was mildly annoyed with him so at present he didnβt give a damn.
He eyed the Vulcan who wore a big woolen sweater as he gazed blankly back at Jim. He had been of no help whatsoever since they arrived. Jim had gotten the fire going in the living room and now he was fiddling with the heater to try to get it to go on.
His family had never switched to a computer-controlled heat apparatus. Theyβd been convinced an old-fashioned heater was βcharmingβ. Charming his ass.
βIf Iβm this cold you must be freezing,β Jim said as amiably as he could manage under the circumstances.
βAs a Vulcan, I am able toββ
βBlah blah blah.β If Jim didnβt have his hands full of instruments, heβd be sticking his fingers in his ears. Immature? No doubt. βYou know you didnβt have to come with me.β
Jim was sorry heβd come with himself. Or you know, whatever. Stupid blizzard.
Theyβd barely made it there and he wanted to turn right around and leave except the weather got even worse and theyβd been stuck.
βYou did not want me to?β Spock asked, neutrally.
He had wanted Spock to. Theyβd just started aβ¦thingβ¦er a whatever. Prior to this shore leave or break, theyβd maybe had sex. Okay, not maybe, they had. Even though they hadnβt had the conversation as to what that meant at all. Jim didnβt really want to have that conversation. It made him sick even thinking about that conversation. And as far as he could tell the robot didnβt either.
But instead of answering that loaded question, Jim grimaced. βIf I canβt get this heater started weβre going to be in a world of trouble. That fire isnβt going to do it to keep us warm enough.β
βI could look at it,β Spock offered.
And it was on the tip of his tongue to ask what a stupid Vulcan would know about an old-time heater, because he was that irritated with the world, but what the hell. He wasnβt having any luck.
He stepped aside and thrust the tools into Spockβs hands. βKnock yourself out. Well, actually, donβt. I donβt think I have any medical equipment for that.β
Spock didnβt bother to comment on that and Jim didnβt blame him.
With a sigh, he rubbed his neck and said, βIβll be right back. I gotta pee.β
So he trudged up the basement stairs, shivering madly as he made his way up to the bathroom. He was really starting to hate this place and he was going to have more than a few words with his mom over it.
In the bathroom, having to lower his pants to pee, he thought his dick was going to break off it was so damn frozen.
He was eying the faucet and wondering how cold the water would be when he washed his hands when he suddenly heard the heater kick on.
A moment later a triumphant Spock came up from the basement, looking altogether pleased with himself.
βHow did youββ
βWell, scientifically speaking, Iββ
Jim covered Spockβs mouth with his to shut him up.

Iβm with Jim. The cold makes me grumpy too! (And cold it is!). But aww theyβre so cute. I sort of love how Spock didnβt react bc he likely knew where Jimβs frustration was coming from. Bc he understands Jim.
Lovely surprise!

I WONDERED if all the emphasis on Iowa temps lately would get your creativity jolted! Good for you to just let it happen.
Please put this on Ao3. The country needs it right now!

In my little world, we have NO outages. No grid problems. Except this *^%$^&* apartment complex AGAIN, after spending God knows how much 3 years ago to repair all the burst pipes THEY caused by refusing to drain the exterior fire sprinkler pipes as they’re supposed to, they AGAIN didn’t drain them, and one burst yesterday. But THIS time, the fire alarms went off all over the entire complex (that didn’t happen before at all. I have no idea what the difference is now.)
Anyway, none of us could stand being inside for about 90 minutes yesterday (because they’re literally ear-splitting loud – painfully, impossibly so) until someone came from corporate to turn them off. SMH. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Oh what a great surprise on this cold and snowy day (for me)! Grumpy Jim makes me chuckle. Things were really not going right. Having shore leave, when a blizzard hits and the heat refuses to come on. Very concerning especially with Spock there, who is definitely not used to cold winter weather. Love how Spock just fixes it so casually!
Great ending! Chefβs kiss!π π

I was going to comment that there was one small typo, but I see you fixed it. Iβm the Queen of making typos myself! Lol! π€·π»ββοΈ
