I am thrilled to say that all of November has now been written and scheduled. Yay! What a relief.
I have also written and scheduled the first chapter of Let Nothing You Dismay. Very excited about that!
That is all.

Woo hoo! (My phone keeps autocorrecting to woo ho- which Since your Christmas fiction is mentioned, might actually be appropriate)! LOL!! I’m excited to see all that you have in store tor us.
❤️💚🖖😘
I have a question to you as an ao3 writer. Wondering what you think of this situation…
I read a one chapter fiction from 2012 by another author, who is still actively writing.
In their author’s notes at the beginning and end of their story, they said several times that they might add to it, if people were interested, but they never did.
In 2019, someone wrote a comment asking them if they ever we’re going to continue it. The author responded that they thought they had something left on an old computer hard drive. And if they were stumbled across it they would publish it.
So then I commented recently that I liked their story and asked if they’re ever continuing it. And they got all a affronted that I asked. They told me to scroll up to the top of the page and notice that it said chapter 1/1, so therefore it was a completed fiction.
Made me feel like an asshole.
Let me see exactly what they wrote… I’m getting more annoyed at them being annoyed than I should be.
… my question to you is to be continued.

I’m sorry that this person was an asshole to you. There are a shocking amount of self-entitled idiots writing on AO3 I am not going to lie. They actually get offended if you indicate you’d like to see more or ask them. I find that behavior so appalling and narcissistic. And there are plenty of fics on there that never ever got continued. They should have been deleted in my opinion. But that’s me. I was following a ten chapter fic that never got finished and as far as I know it’s still up there since like 2013 or 2014. I honestly don’t get why people act like that to reader questions

I’m sorry you went through that with that author.
I personally love then readers comment asking for more. Makes me happy they enjoyed a one-shot or a complete story so much they want more even if its not going to happen.
As for ko-fi, I have grown up around fanfics to know that taking money for fics is a bit no-no. Fanfic authors used to have to write disclaimers at the beginning of their stories stating that the characters weren’t theirs, etc.
Big virtual hugs!

… Continued:
This was their initial response to me.
“Hi! If you’ll scroll to the top of the fic, you’ll see it’s marked 1/1, and is a complete story. I’m glad you enjoyed the story, but many writers – myself included- find comments like this upsetting. This story is done, and has been since I originally published it.”
Like last year they were saying they had more on a computer. Harddrive somewhere.
Then after I responded and told them I was sorry and just meant it as a compliment… I didn’t point out that they, in several places, said they might add to it, if people asked.
Then they wrote an additional message to me that directed me to their Twitter writing page, which had a link to their Kofi writing page, so I could commission them. Like that is a hard no from me, at this point! 😡🤬
Was I inappropriate to ask in the first place, if they were adding to it? Like seriously!
Sigh! I’m getting too old for this shit.. upsetting someone with a compliment. IDK!
Lol!
I needed to vent this to someone… Sorry you are the one I’m venting to.
Anyway-hope you’re having a great week. I’m going to read more of your writing that’s on my notifications list. Generally I read comments before I read stories.

Not at all but they were quite inapporopriate for directing you to to their Kofi page. That is a direct violation of A03 rules.
Please do us a favor here and tell us who this writer is so that we may all avoid them. I will never ever read a damn thing they have written if this is the way they treated you. What BS. I am livid on your behalf.
As for the “many” writers find this upsetting? Seriously? Kiss my damn ass. Grrr
Oh and I am 100% serious about being told who they are so we can avoid them.
Edited to add: as for you being too old, no. It’s likely they are too young and immature and think they are entitled. We should all feel so sowwy for their put upon selves because someone liked their work enough to ask for more. It’s BS.
And anyone reading this right now who writes? It’s BS to treat readers like that. KNOCK IT THE FUCK OFF

I hope it’s okay that I reply despite not being a writer myself. But a happy reader – most of the time.
I can see both sides, sort of. In some ways I understand where the writer is coming from, because there’s tons of entitled readers who feel they deserve stuff and demand updates, storyline, and what not. Having said that, that’s absolutely not the case here. I felt that the first answer was friendly enough, although based on what you’ve explained, kind of wtf? If they actually wrote in the AN that there’s a chance they might write more AND mention it in replies as well. Jerk. You’ve been polite and friendly. Is it too much to ask for that in return? I don’t think so.
I think the biggest issue is that many people (nobody here included) completely leave decency and politeness behind when they start using a keyboard. I mean, I doubt they’re talking like that to actual people. As I try to teach my kids – if you got nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all. Sometimes shutting up is the best choice.
Sorry for the rambling.

I have never run across an “entitled” reader demanding anything from me in the 7 plus years I have been posting there. Obviously you have seen it. I am glad I have not. What I see are exactly what Evening described. Writers saying how dare you even ask them a question about if they are writing more and claiming such a question is forbidden and somehow offensive. It’s not. If you don’t want to write more it’s super easy to say, oh sorry, this is it. I’ve done it! ha ha So I continue to maintain this person was just rude and unkind and “upset” for no damn reason.

The author’s name is Lady_Talla_Doe. The story is called Dream a Little Dream of me. They story has them bring together… But it is until the end of the story that you realize it’s all a dream that Jim is having and that Spock thinks he hears Jim call his name out quietly. Then the story ends.

Oh, I could add some ao3 names to your list who are like that. Moreso like that when they start something and then just abandon it, but SAY they’re going to finish. Someday. And that’s several fics by this person.
I’m so glad I told you I wasn’t even going to start reading one of their latest until it was finished.
Because sure enough, here we are, and they’ve never finished it, nor updated in months.
Yeah, entitled, but that writer is old enough to know better. But you know, they’re facilitated by “the clique” as someone who can do no wrong and we’re so lucky to get to read what they DO write, finished or not.

Yes so right you are. She left that Spirk story completely unfinished and abandoned just as they were getting together and didn’t she say she had no idea what else to write? Lord. Anyway yes. too many to count on there think they are God’s special gift and don’t dare question them.
This reply to Eveningstar : “I’m glad you enjoyed the story, but many writers – myself included- find comments like this upsetting.” What in all that’s holy is upsetting? It pisses me off no end. What the hell? How dare she treat a reader like that. Seriously. I was tempted to comment to her but will let it go!

Thanks everyone for the support on this. I’m feeling better about it. ❤️❤️❤️
This was her original author’s note, from 2012.
“Notes:
this was suppose to be a multi-chapter. I don’t know how much interest there’s going to be, and I don’t know where to go. So it’s thrown to the fandom. Be it on you to judge the fate of it, if it stays a one shot of becomes a three shot. Suggestions are always welcome.“
Then in responses to comments the author seemed to indicate that they’d consider writing more., including one response just one year ago that seemed like they’d written more but it was on an old computer. Saying that if they came across it, they’d post it.

Honestly? With that note you’re inviting people to ask. It’s that easy. So their reaction to your question is totally uncalled for. Rude.
I don’t know how AO3 works, but in that case they should change the AN.

There are a lot of stories that never get finished – I find it’s worse when it’s an author who does it repeatedly but every story they post is so detailed and well written you assume this one is different and then *bam – it’s dropped again.
To be honest I always think I’m really lucky to be able to read all these amazing stories and it’s a privilege so I try not to get annoyed, but a professional novelist friend of mine says it’s rude. She gets royally pissed off as she thinks it’s beyond entitled to waste (her word) peoples time getting them into a story only to discard it.
I’m intrigued which the Spirk one above is that stopped just as they got together – I’ve got a gut feeling that’s the one that really frustrated me as it was so well written and planned. Could easily be one of a couple of hundred others through 😉

It was a recent one and she wrote and posted several chapters.
But yes, I agree. It’s happened to me so many times with ones I was reading. One recently had posted a really amazing first chapter and it was only supposed to be two chapters. I eagerly anticipated the second chapter. It sounded like she intended to post it soon. Never ever finished. I almost wept over that one! HA HA

I so agree. It’s an endless argument between writers and readers on Tumblr. Most writers ARE readers. You’d think they’d get it. But I’ve found it’s not that way at all. I’ve been chewed out for asking a writer if they plan to finish a fic. (They said they’d just decided to finish one they started like 10 years ago. So they’ll finish it whenever they decide to. So it’s not abandoned.) Sheesh. I’m 67. I don’t buy green bananas. And I keep hearing “I don’t get paid to write these. It’s free.” Well, excuuuuuuuuuuuuuse me. I’m not getting paid to READ it either! This is why I like one shots. There’s little worse than giving your heart and soul to love a fic you’re reading just to see it effectively abandoned (I don’t care what they say). I wish if a writer isn’t going to update, just delete it and repost when you decide to finish. I think anything else is MEAN, much less rude.
I’m not a smart/good writer, only one year writing in college. I’m not one to hear prompts or try to write for writing’s sake. I get inspired, I write a story. I’ve only written like 15 in the past 3 years, and some I’ve deleted because …I’m uncomfortable with them.
But I’m NOTHING like ivan who can write multiple stories simultaneously and update on a schedule.
When I write, I’m dedicated to that ONE story, and if it’s multiple chapters, I update every day or two or at most, three. That’s how my brain works. If I’m writing something, I’m addicted/obsessed with it, and it’s gotta come outa my head/hands immediately. Eveningstar knows – I write cliffies, but the solution is only a day or 2 away, so no long waits! And I’ve NEVER started anything and not finished it.
But then, I’m not a professional. Maybe that’s the difference. A lot of these fics are novel length, and novels may take over a year to write.
I just know, when I read, I put my heart into it, and my heart is BROKEN when something I’m reading is not finished.
And on the flip part of that, I’ve nagged Ivan to write more about some one shot they wrote. I’m like the nemesis around here. I like a plot, I want more more more! I’m so bad. So far though, ivan puts up with me.
So far.

Yeah I am unusual not going to lie. Most do not write like I do, I completely acknowledge that and I don’t blame anyone who chooses not to read a WIP. Even I have deleted ones I just couldn’t maintain interest in continuing, but at least you did convince me that was for the best

Yes Ivan, I started reading a recent Star Trek fiction of hers that had a couple of chapters that popped up somewhere. Not my usual cup of tea. That’s what led me to her Spirk story, that I mentioned above. I went back and deleted my comment on her recent fiction, because I was so annoyed with her.
It saddens me to see stories that get abandoned, but I always wonder what happened in the author’s life and feel sad for them, imaging that they’re facing issues that keep them from writing. And it saddens me not to see the resolution of the story.
