You might be sorry I added this!

“What are you doing out here?”

Jim looked over his shoulder at Bones and smiled. “Out here? This is a space station, can it really be out here?”

“You’re the one that compared it to a snow globe.”

“You’re deflecting.”

Jim sighed as Bones came up to sit next to him on the bench overlooking the manmade park for Yorktown. It was made to look like Golden Gate Park. Jim thought it failed.

“Are you avoiding someone in particular?”

“Just…no, not really.”

“I’m sorry, Jim. I know you were hoping…”

“No,” he interrupted quickly. “No. I wasn’t hoping that. At all.”

Bones patted his knee. “They’re about to cut some of the pie. You should come back to the dinner. Everyone’s asking after you. Ensign Parks made the sweet potato pie special for you.”

He didn’t have the heart to admit he didn’t care for sweet potato pie. Instead he nodded. “I’ll be right in.”

“I will. I need to contact my mom.”

Bones sighed. “Okay. Under ten minutes, Jim.”

The first thing his mom said was, “You look wrecked.”

He smiled faintly. “Nah, I’m okay. Just still a little soreness from my injuries. Which had mostly healed. I’m good.”

“And emotionally?”

“Also good. Promise.”

“Wish I was there. Or you were here.”

His smile widened. “Me too. But I couldn’t let today go without contacting you. I guess I’m expected back inside for dessert. Dinner’s over.”

“Was it good?”

“Delicious. They did a great job with the turkey and all the sides.” He paused. “How about you, Mom?”

“Oh, I went to a restaurant. With just me, it’s not worth it to make anything. But it was good.”

He felt sad again, but didn’t think it was a good idea to let her see. She couldn’t change anything anyway. It was what it was.

Yeah, he sounded like Spock.

He blew out a breath and forced a smile. “I should go. Happy Thanksgiving, Mom.”

“Okay, Jim. Talk soon. Happy Thanksgiving.”

He closed his communicator and stood, to be faced with Spock.

“Oh. Hi. I was coming back inside.”

“Yes. I was told to check on you.”

Jim smiled. “Everything okay?”

“Affirmative.” Spock hesitated. “Captain, I was wondering if I could speak to you later, after dessert.”

“Sure, Spock. Any time.”

He followed Spock inside and smiled at and thanked Ensign Parks as she excitedly handed Jim a slice of sweet potato pie. “This looks delicious, Ensign, thank you.”

His smile slipped only a little when Spock returned to Uhura’s side. Uhura stood talking to Sulu and his husband and daughter. She put her hand on Spock’s back as he rejoined them. Jim shook his head and turned away to seek out Bones. He could use a drink.

And so another multiple part flash begins

This one starring our clueless Vulcan

“Do not be ridiculous, Nyota. I am most certainly not in love with the captain.”

Nyota smirked at Spock. “No?”

“Of course not. He is my friend and superior officer and that is it.”

They had been approaching her quarters when she had made the suggestion that he viewed their captain with a lot more than just friendly affection. They stepped inside, Spock glad they were no longer in the corridor where anyone could hear them.

“You two are practically joined at the hip. He can’t stop touching you and you let him. Don’t think I haven’t noticed.”

Spock paused as he took a seat on the sofa in her room. “Does that bother you?”

“No.” She went to her wardrobe. “I mean sure it did a little when we were still together, but honestly, that was part of why I ended our romantic relationship.” She unzipped her dress.

“You did not tell me this.”

“Spock, at the time I was dealing with the end of our love. Well, that kind of love. If you couldn’t figure out it was Kirk you loved, why should I tell you?” Nyota slipped out of her uniform dress and pulled on a robe, which she tied at the waist. “But now it’s been months, Spock, and you still haven’t faced the truth.”

Spock thought about his interactions with the captain. He did look upon Jim with a great deal of affection, but surely it was just as a…a friend.

“Do you remember how jealous you got at that bar on Fenrah 2? You actually put yourself between Kirk and that woman.”

“Her intentions were questionable in nature and as first officer—”

“She just wanted to fuck him, Spock.”

“It was my duty to protect him from harm.”

“Honey, you are a very logical being. Think about it. Think deep. Your wanting to protect him from paramours has nothing to do with your duty. You want him for yourself and you hate the idea of anyone else with him.”

Spock opened his mouth, closed it. Was it true? His counterpart had implied he was close with his captain, but he had never said…of course he was quite tight-lipped. And Spock had been with Nyota. There had been no reason to believe their timeline would necessarily mirror the ambassador’s.

“You’re always defending him to others, too. And Spock, you aren’t at all comfortable with anyone else touching you except him.” She sat beside him and smiled. “And me, of course. But I’m your former lover and he’s the one you want now. It makes sense.”

Spock swallowed heavily. “How do I…but he does not…”

Nyota laughed.  “Oh yes he does. Trust me. He’s crazy about you.”

“I do not know how to have that conversation.”

“You’ll find a way, Spock.”

Extra Surprise Flash August 14, 2019

Spock did not like to impose on his captain, normally. If Jim had merely invited him to his quarters and to his bed, as was usual, Spock would have gone very willingly. Eagerly, in fact, for he had  no desire to spend the night alone in his cold bed without his heater beside him.

And tonight of all nights…

The mission had gone so terribly wrong. It was a miracle both he and Jim were physically unscathed. But they were both exhausted and emotionally, as Jim would say, fried.

And yet…there had been no invitation from Jim. He’d just said goodnight and gone to his quarters.

Spock stared at him empty cold bed and made a decision he hoped he did not regret.

He picked up his sleeping robe and walked out of his quarters and went next door to Jim’s. On the prior Enterprise their bathroom had been shared, but that was an old design, and when they were forced to rebuild the ship after Altamid, they’d all gotten their own bathrooms. Jim’s and Spock’s being the largest floorplan.

Spock stepped inside  as the door slid open, then remained by it, as he held his robe staring at his captain, who already lay in bed. Jim was dressed in a tight fitting T’shirt, molded to his muscles, and Spock suspected, his usual cotton pajama bottoms with the stars dotted on them.

“Yeah?” Jim was leaning up against the pillows that propped him up. He had a book in his hand.

And now Spock felt foolish. It was obvious Jim had not wanted him there. Why hadn’t he gotten that?

Jim’s gaze went to the robe clutched in his hands as Spock remained silent. “Spock, what is it? Are you all right?”

“I…wanted to…may I stay with you tonight?” He felt that his face was flushed and knew that he must be a very dark shade of green. But this was not his element. Nyota had never made it this hard. Everything was difficult with Jim. Watching Jim breathe was.

Without a word, Jim picked up the corner of the blanket and sheet, holding it aloft.

Spock swallowed. “I understand if you do not—”

“Just…get in.”

“If you would rather—”

“Spock.” Up until that moment Jim had sounded almost harsh, but just then his tone and his voice had softened considerably. “Put on your robe and get into bed. It’s okay.”

Spock nodded, undressed and redressed quickly, and then slid into bed next to his captain, who had now put aside his book to watch Spock’s every move.

“If I have overstepped—”

Jim held out his fingers toward Spock who was suddenly filled with such relief, he was shaking, as he touched his fingers to Jim’s.

“You can’t, okay? You can’t overstep. And I’m glad you’re here.” His mouth thinned. “What a craptastic day. Yeah?”

“Beyond imagining.”

‘I’m sorry. I should have…I really wasn’t thinking. I just wanted to get in bed and have the day all over.”

“And me as well. But I needed…”

Jim smiled then, soft and sweet. “I know. It’s all right. I don’t mind. Lie down and come here.”

They both lay flat on the bed and then Spock scooted closer, wrapping himself around his captain. He closed his eyes and sighed.

“Computer,” Jim called. “Lights off.”
