Vanik

Christmas in July, Post 7

Jim opened the farmhouse door to young Vanik.

Jim frowned. “Vanik?” He looked beyond the boy but saw no one else. “Are you alone?”

“I am, Jim,” the boy said. “I came to speak with you about Uncle Spock.”

“How did you get here?”

“By shuttle of course.”

Jim rolled his eyes. “Do your parents know you’re here?”

“No.”

“You’d better come inside. Your ears are probably getting frostbite.” He yanked the young half-Vulcan into the house.

“About my uncle—”

“Forget it.”

“But he is most apologetic and misses you terribly.”

Jim closed the door and gazed down at the boy. “Did he send you?”

“No,” Vanik admitted. “But I know that it is true.”

“Vanik, you’re just a kid, but you’re going to find out in life that sometimes relationships just don’t work out.”

“Perhaps. But that is not true in your case. You are fated mates.”

Jim snorted. “Yeah, whatever. Your uncle is a big jerk.”

Vanik nodded. “That is no doubt true, but I know that nevertheless, he cares for you a great deal. He wishes to apologize.”

“Then why isn’t he here instead of you?” Jim raised both eyebrows expectantly.

“He wants to but he is shy.”

Jim actually laughed at that. “Uh-huh. I’d better contact your parents.”

Vanik bit his lip. “If you like, you can return with me to San Francisco and meet with Uncle Spock.”

“Can’t.”

“Why not?”

“Because I agreed to spend the Christmas holidays with my mother and she arrives here in two days. I’ll have to get your parents to come get you. I don’t know how in the world they let you travel here alone.”

“I am not a child.”

“You are ten years old. That’s a kid.”

Jim walked further into the house with Vanik following.

“You could contact Spock to come and get me.”

“I think it’s better to contact your parents.”

Vanik stopped and looked at the Christmas tree Jim had been putting up in the living room. “I could help you finish decorating the pine.”

“Well, maybe, while we wait for your folks. It’s probably okay. You sit there while I contact them.”

Vanik sighed and did as he was told. “Very well.”

*****

It was a couple of hours later when Jim heard the doorbell ring. With Vanik’s help, he had finished decorating the tree and had even strung the lights on it, which he’d just turned on. It looked pretty good, he decided. And his mom would be pleased.

He had gotten Vanik a cup of warm cider and a plate of cookies, so he sat on the couch now and munched away.

“That’ll be your folks.”

Jim smiled at the boy and went to the front door to greet Sybok and Anoria.

He blinked into the face of Spock.

His former boyfriend wore a big fluffy navy sweater and he looked unexpectedly pale.

“Jim.” His name was like a soft whisper on Spock’s lips.

“Spock?”

“I…miss you.”

Jim’s stomach flipped. “You…aren’t here to collect Vanik?”

Spock frowned. “What?”

“The kid he’s here. I contacted Sybok. I thought maybe he sent you.”

“No.” Spock shook his head. He reached for Jim and pulled him out into the yard. And though it was cold and their breath could be seen, Jim didn’t really mind. “I miss you every moment of every hour of every day. I cannot sleep or eat or do anything, really. I love you more than mere words can convey. If you will forgive me and allow me back into your life, I will spend every moment of every hour of every day convincing you that I am worthy of your affections.”

“Well I…” Jim’s throat clogged and he attempted to swallow. “I think somewhere in there was an apology.”

“A most humble one. I cannot guarantee I will not upset you again, Jim, but please know that I never intentionally hurt you, for you are the most precious being in all the universe to me.”

“Spock,” Jim said, brokenly, throwing himself into Spock’s arms. The Vulcan’s arms came around him, holding him so close he could barely breathe, and he cared not at all.

“Then you forgive me?” Spock asked.

“Yes. Yes, of course.”

“You will return to our home in San Francisco?”

“Yes. Well. No. I mean not yet. Mom’s coming for Christmas and I said I’d stay through the new year.” Jim pulled back to look at him. But Spock barely let him go. “Will you stay here with me?”

“There is no way I am going anywhere without you.”

“Yay!”

They turned as one to see Vanik standing in the doorway to the farmhouse clapping.

“Vanik,” Spock said, shaking his head. “When your father comes—”

“Actually.” Vanik cleared his throat. “I contacted my parents and advised them that now that you are here, I wish to stay for the Terran holiday season as Jim’s guest.”

Spock stared. “Vanik—”

Jim chuckled. He felt too happy to do much else. Spock still held on to him. “It’s okay, Spock. He can stay.”

Spock glanced at him. “Are you certain? I can make sure that my brother collects the pest.”

“Really. It’s fine.” Jim kissed him. Spock kissed him back. “Come on. Let’s go inside where it’s warm.”

“That would be most agreeable.”

Jim went to move but Spock kept him there. “You have to let me go so I can walk.”

“Perhaps I should carry you.”

“Spock.”

Spock sighed. “Very well.”

And he released Jim but took his hand almost immediately. Together they entered the house, Vanik before them, and went to begin their celebration.

It was very merry indeed.

A little dose of Vanik…

“Where is Jim?”

Spock looked up from the terminal at his desk to see Vanik standing before him. “When did you get here?”

“A moment ago.”

“I have told you before that you do not have permission to just let yourself in.”

Vanik straightened. “Acknowledged. But I had concerns.”

Spock leaned back. “Concerns?”

“Where is Jim? He has been missing for a few days and does not respond to my attempts to contact him.” Vanik paused. “I have two theories.”

Spock arched a brow. “Do continue.”

“Either he has, as humans would say, ‘dumped you’, and is ignoring me due to our personal connection.”

Spock was torn between amusement and outrage over the notion that Jim had ‘dumped’ him. Amusement won out.

“Or?”

“You have committed a grievous act of violence against him and you have buried the body somewhere.”

This time Spock rolled his eyes. “I did not murder Jim.”

“Then it is true. He has dumped you.”

“No, it is not true. Jim went to Riverside.”

“Iowa?”

“Indeed. To visit with his mother and brother over the Terran festival of giving thanks. Neither Jim nor his mother have had contact with George Samuel Kirk for many years so this was a big deal for them.”

Vanik looked pensive. “And why did you fail to accompany him on such a momentous occasion?”

“I was not invited.”

“You were not invited?” Vanik exclaimed. “But I thought your romance with Jim was progressing appropriately.”

“And it is. This is a time when it is important for them to bond as a family.”

“But are you not Jim’s family?”

Spock shook his head. “Not as yet. Our relationship is satisfactory and we are mutually invested in the continuous nature of it. I was perfectly fine with Jim going to Riverside for this trip. As for not contacting you, I assume that he is either busy or communication is not ideal there.”

“And have you heard from him?”

Spock had not and said so. “But I had not anticipated hearing from him. The trip is brief and he will be back on Sunday.”

“That does not bode well.”

“How so?”

Vanik shrugged. “At this point, had you been providing the emotional support Jim surely needs as a human, he would have asked you to accompany him. That he did not…”

“Do you not have something to attend to other than harassing me regarding my relationship with Jim which is most certainly not your business.”

“Yes, unfortunately I do. I must go to class.”

Vanik left then, but Spock was dismayed to realize that he made Spock begin to doubt his relationship with Jim. He had thought nothing of Jim going to Iowa by himself.

He had been convinced that everything was good between them. Should he have pressed Jim for an invite? Insisted on going with him? Was he failing to emotionally support his lover?

Spock hadn’t even bothered to check that Jim made it all right. Was that wrong of him? He had assumed…

He tapped out a message.

Jim, my apologies for not checking in with you prior to now. Did you make it safely? And it there anything you need from me?

There was, of course, no immediate response, and so Spock returned to working on his coursework.

He was searching out something to eat when he finally heard from Jim.

Yeah, I’m here. No trouble at all getting here. Mom and I are fine. Things are a little more tense with Sam. Hey, tell that nephew of yours I said hi. I’ve been meaning to respond, but with the family drama…

Understood. Vanik did express concern for your welfare. I will advise him. Jim?

Yeah?

Would it be…permissible for me to board a shuttle to Riverside to join you?

When no immediate response was forthcoming, Spock began to hastily type a message taking it back.

What time can you get here? I’ll pick you up from the shuttle bay?

I will leave immediately. I will text you my arrival information.

K. See you soon.

Spock made his arrangements, closed out of everything and packed a small bag.  Before he left, he sent a message to his nephew.

Jim sends his regards. I am joining him.

Then Spock added…

Thank you.

Let’s end the month with a little Vanik!

Vanik was following Jim around the apartment Jim shared with his Uncle Spock. Vanik had arrived a short time at Jim’s invitation. To Vanik’s delight there had been glazed covered donuts and cream puffs waiting.

He’d barely had time to enjoy them though, as Jim was now taking him around, speaking of elaborate plans.

“I figure here I’ll hang webs. Maybe even spiders.”

“Is that the usual practice?”

Jim grinned. “Yep. And maybe some ghosts and witches too.”

“A witch?”

“Yeah, you know. Pointed hat, wart on her nose.”

Vanik nodded. “You are, as they say, going all out for your Halloween party.”

“Well, it’s only once a year. I’m going to have food and drinks too.”

“What did Uncle Spock have to say about all this?”

Jim smiled. “You know I’m good at convincing Spock.”

Vanik did know this. There wasn’t really much Spock denied Jim. And though he knew Spock wasn’t fond of such things, Vanik knew Jim hadn’t had any trouble talking Spock into it.

“What kind of food are you going to have?”

“Finger stuff, it’s easier. Bones makes a killer meatball so I figure we can make them look like eyeballs.”

“Spock does not eat meat,” Vanik reminded him.

“Right, so I’ll also use a melon baller and make honeydew eyeballs.”

“May I have another cream puff?”

Jim waved in their direction. “Sure sure.”

Now that Vanik thought about it, the cream puffs could make pretty good eyeballs too.

“We can make those fat pretzels into fingers and like paste a slice of almond on the end with frosting as their nail. Trust me, it’ll be cool. You can help if you want.”

Vanik did. Any time he could spend with Spock and Jim, he was all for it.

“You’ll need a costume.”

Vanik paused mid-chew. “A costume?”

“It’s a costume party, kiddo.” Jim looked at him. “How about Eddie Munster?”

“What is an Eddie Munster?”

Jim picked up his PADD, stabbed at it as though he hated it, and then handed it to Vanik with a grin.

“Eddie Munster.”

“Hmm.” Vanik grabbed another eyeball…er…creampuff. “There is a certain resemblance. I could make it work. What are you going as, Jim?”

“A zombie red shirt.”

Vanik stared at him. “A…what?”

“Um, well, just wait. You’ll see.”

Vanik shrugged. Adults were incomprehensible at times. “What will Uncle Spock be?”

“That’s an interesting question.” Jim dug into a large bag. He pulled out decorations, Vanik assumed, were appropriate for Halloween.

Just then the door of the apartment opened and Spock entered the apartment.

“Vanik, I was unaware you were stopping by.”

Vanik noticed the disapproval there but this time he could not help but be smug in his response.

“I was invited over by Jim.”

Spock glanced at his boyfriend. “Is that true?”

“Sure is.”

Spock looked back at Vanik. “Your father will not be pleased at how many sweets you are eating.” He shook his head. Turned back to Jim and noticed Jim had a life sized plastic skeleton in his hands. “What—”

“For the Halloween Party,” Vanik supplied helpfully.

“Halloween…Party.”

“I’m going as Eddie Munster and Jim is going as a zombie wearing red. What are you going as, Uncle Spock?”

Spock’s right eye was twitching. “The Invisible Man as I will not be…”

Jim arched both brows at Spock. He said nothing whatsoever. Just arched those bushy brows.

Spock sighed. “I do not know yet.”

Jim smiled then and once more Uncle Spock blushed.

Vanik held out a creampuff. “Eyeball?”

Spock scowled. “What?”

“Never mind.” It was the last one and Vanik bit into it. Spock probably didn’t eat them anyway.

Happy Halloween and on to November next! November’s theme is family and gatherings.

“Are you nervous?” Vanik asked Jim as Spock’s significant other stood in front of a full length mirror dressed in his red cadet’s uniform.

Jim glanced down at him. “Nervous?”

“About the first day.”

Jim smiled. “It’s not really the first day. I had summer courses.”

“You did, but this is the first day of the regular semester and I thought…you might be.”

“Course not. What’s there to be nervous about?” He turned away from the mirror. Then he looked down at Vanik again. For a moment he said nothing, then the smile returned to his face, but this one was a little different. Very gentle and affectionate, rather than amused.

To Vanik’s surprise, Jim suddenly crouched down on his haunches until he was closer to Vanik’s own height.

“A little nervous about your first day at the new school, huh?”

Vanik swallowed heavily and nodded.

“You know you’re really smart, so that’s not it. Don’t think you’ll make any friends?”

“Well.” Vanik looked down toward his feet. “I am different than everyone else. They’ll all be fully human.”

“Now, I doubt that. A lot of families around here are in Starfleet or the Federation and come from everywhere. And you are different than anyone else. I’m different too.”

Vanik raised his gaze. “You are?”

“Sure. Everyone is unique. There’s not one of us that’s exactly the same and how great is that? You’re going to do fine, Vanik. You’ll see. And if you have any issues with anyone, you tell me, and I’ll come kick their as…butts.”

Vanik returned Jim’s smile. “They are kids. You can’t kick their butts, Jim.”

“Right.” Jim grinned. “Their parents then.”

“Okay. And if you have any trouble at the Academy I will kick their butts.”

“Deal.” Jim held out his palm and Vanik slapped it.

****

“Jim!”

Vanik’s uncle, Spock, watched as his nephew ran to Jim when they arrived to pick Vanik up from school as Sybok and Anoria had asked them to.

“Hey, kid. How’d it go?”

“It went great! You were right.”

“Right?” Spock asked with a questioning brow.

“There were lots of other students who were not fully human. Some weren’t even a tiny bit!”

“See?” Jim ruffled Vanik’s hair. “Who’s up for ice cream?”

“Me!”

Jim glanced at Spock. “Or you know, frozen non-dairy yogurt or whatever.”

Spock took Jim’s arm, showing his own amusement, though not to the extent his nephew did, and they walked away from Vanik’s school together.

Flash Fic, August 19, 2020

It was Vanik’s idea to come sit by the community pool in his uncle’s apartment complex while his uncle’s boyfriend, Jim, did laps in said pool. Spock had not wanted to come sit under one of the faded umbrellas that clearly needed replacing, but Vanik had insisted.

“What if Jim is drowning and needs rescuing?” Vanik had reasoned.

Jim, who had heard, laughed. He was always laughing at Vanik’s interactions with Spock. It was a warm, pleasing laugh that always made both Vanik and Spock unreasonably pleased.

“I’m not going to drown, kid.”

“Certainly not if we are there to watch over you.”

Of course that reasonable, logical argument had worked. Spock agreed and the three of them had trudged down to the pool.

Vanik had pretended he intended to swim also by putting on a pair of swimming trunks his mother had thoughtfully purchased for him. Spock had come down in his usual clothing, though, at least, in deference to the August heat, he wore a T-shirt instead of a sweater.

They’d brought down with them a pitcher of lemonade and three glasses.

Currently Jim was in the pool swimming. There were a few other apartment residents frolicking in and around the pool as well.

“Have you popped the question?”

“Hmm.” Spock was studying his PADD instead of paying attention to Jim or even Vanik.

“Have you popped the question?” Vanik asked again.

“What question?”

Vanik sighed. Reached for his lemonade. “The big one.”

Spock glanced at him and then right back to his PADD. “Yes, his classes are going well and he fully expects to be the youngest captain of a starship in Starfleet history.”

Vanik closed his eyes and counted to ten as his father had taught him. Sybok had assured his son that he would need this particular coping mechanism when dealing with Uncle Spock. Boy, had his dad been right.

“Not about Starfleet,” Vanik said, patiently.

Spock looked at him. “What other question would be important?”

“The one to secure your future with Jim.”

“That is hardly your business, Vanik.”

“It is. I have an invested interest.”

“Which is all in your head. You did have something to do with my meeting Jim, I will give you that, but that doesn’t afford you the right to interfere with our ongoing relationship.”

“It is hardly inference.”

“What would you call it then?”

“An interest.”

Jim suddenly appeared by their table, wiping his wet face with a towel. He was dripping pool water next to them. “An interest in what?”

“Vanik was inquiring into the advancement of our interpersonal relationship,” Spock replied.

Jim looked at him quizzically for a moment, then looked at Vanik. “Mine and Spock’s?”

Vanik cleared his throat. “It is a matter of universal interest, yes.”

Jim laughed again. Both Vanik and Spock straightened.

“I’m pretty sure the universe doesn’t give one whit about what Spock and I get up to. But, as it happens, we’re doing great.” Jim leaned over, ignoring the pool water dripping on Spock, to kiss him lightly on the lips. “Going back in. You two don’t have to stay. I won’t drown.”

Spock’s cheeks were lightly green. “We will stay.”

Jim smiled, kissed him again, and then ruffled Vanik’s hair, before turning around to go back to the pool.

Vanik made a face. “Chlorine.”

“Yes.” Spock went back to studying his PADD.

And Vanik decided he might as well stop pretending to go into the pool and actually go in. He ran toward the pool and jumped in, splashing water everywhere.

He heard Jim’s laugh.

It was good.

From The Matchmaker

“Where is Jim?”

Spock looked up from the book he was reading to gaze into the consternated eyes of his young nephew.

“Vanik. You let yourself in again.”

“Affirmative.”

“Now that Jim lives with me it is not appropriate for you to show up in our apartment unannounced.” He really didn’t think it was appropriate before either, but he would not bring that up again. “Jim values his privacy.”

Vanik nodded. “Understood. In the future I will knock loudly on the door so that neither of you are surprised by my arrival. But…where is Jim? I thought for a moment that you had already managed to chase him away.”

“Vanik.”

The boy shrugged, a smile tugging at his lips. “A small jest at your expense.”

“Clearly.” Spock put his book down. “Why are you looking for Jim?”

“More specifically I am looking for you to learn what you have planned for your anniversary.”

“My what?”

“Anniversary. Approximately six months ago, you and Jim met, which set you on the course to become the brilliant example of couplehood that you are now.” Vanik straightened. “I could take full credit for that, but I believe that would be unfair to Jim. He had something to do with it as well.”

“And I have not?”

“Not much. You are…obtuse. In any case, what have you got planned?”

Spock paused. Glanced around the apartment. “Nothing.”

“Nothing? No Christmas in July celebration?”

“I do not participate in the merriment that surrounds Christmas, why would I have Christmas in July?”

“Because Jim does.”

“Well. But we were not yet engaged in our ‘brilliant couplehood’, as you put it, last Christmas.”

“All the more reason,” Vanik said, with a dramatic pause, “that you should do something to mark the occasion now.”

Spock shook his head and rose from the couch, followed by Vanik, into the kitchen. “I really do not believe that is necessary. Jim has not mentioned a particular interest in such frivolities.”

“As to that, since you are, obtuse, I am not certain that is the case.”

“Stop saying I am obtuse.” He sounded mulish to his own words.

Vanik waved this away. “It is not something you can help. It is what it is. Kaiidth.”

“You have been paying far too much attention to your father lately.” He reached into the fridge for the pitcher of iced tea. He took out two glasses from the cabinet. Shook his head at Vanik when he put out his hand for one. “This is for Jim who should be home any moment. You are not staying.”

As if Spock had conjured him, and he would if he had the power, the door of the apartment opened and Jim, dressed in his red cadet’s uniform stepped inside.

“Oh. Hey. Hi Vanik. Didn’t know you were coming.”

“No one did,” Spock said, pointedly. “And he was leaving.”

Vanik gave him a petulant pout before turning to Jim. “I was under the impression the Academy was out for a few weeks due to the summer holidays.”

Jim smiled. “I enrolled in the summer program to get ahead of everyone in the command track.”

“Oh. That is logical. Happy Anniversary.”

Spock cleared his throat loudly but his nephew ignored him.

Jim looked at Vanik quizzically. “Anniversary?”

“Six months since you and my uncle met. Does no one understand the significance but me?”

Jim laughed. “Um. Sure, kid. It’s definitely significant. And Spock and I love that you remembered. You’re so cute.”

Spock was amused when Vanik blushed.

“I am sure your mother would appreciate you returning home as quickly as possible,” Spock told Vanik.

Vanik sighed and nodded. “Very well. Do try to do something celebratory in my absence.”

Jim’s smile widened. “I’m sure we’ll think of something.”

Spock walked his nephew over to the door and watched him leave. “Let us know you made it home safely,” he reminded Vanik.

After closing the door, Spock turned to Jim. “Welcome home.”

“Thanks, Spock.” Jim gave him a lingering kiss. He grinned. “And about that celebration…”

Flash Fic, 02/19/2020

Spock met Jim at a restaurant across town not that far from the department store where Jim worked. There was still so little he knew about the younger man. The truth was Spock found his extraordinary masculine beauty quite intimidating. He had never known someone as attractive as Jim. And Spock had grown up feeling somewhat awkward, anyway, considering he was not fully accepted by either Humans or Vulcans. This had bothered him in a way it did not seem to bother Vanik.

But in any event, because he was still quite shy with Jim, Spock had failed to learn much information about Kirk.

Jim already waited at a table when Spock arrived, though he stood up as Spock approached.

“Hi Spock. You’re a little late. Thought maybe I’d been stood up.” He smiled though and retook is seat as Spock sat himself down.

It was not like Spock to be late and he said so, “I do apologize for my tardiness. It is uncommon.”

Spock would not explain that he had taken extra time to assure his appearance would be appealing.

“It’s okay,” Jim assured him. “Just glad you’re here. I’m always half expecting that you won’t show.”

Spock frowned slightly. “Why would you expect that?”

Jim smiled somewhat wistfully. “Well. It’s pretty clear that Vanik wanted us to get together. He pushed you into this with machinations. Would you have asked me out if he hadn’t orchestrated things?”

He believed in honesty. “No.”

That wistful smile deepened. “So you see.”

“While it is true I would not have asked you, it is not because I was not interested in you.”

“No?”

Spock could not meet Jim’s gaze. “Quite the opposite. I find you most compelling.”

“Then…why?”

His gaze rose and met those startling blue eyes. “I…do not do well in personal interactions.”

Jim smiled. It was not at all mocking or even amused. It was…gentle. “You mean you’re shy?”

“Yes.” He felt his ears warm. “Yes.”

“You have nothing at all to worry about, Spock,” Jim said then. “I find you compelling too.”
