Kris’ Birthday Flash 03/19/2020

Written well before all of the happenings….

Spock straightened from his station as he became aware of the little huff of breath coming from the captain’s station. He became somewhat alarmed when he watched as the captain sagged deep into the chair, almost to the point he would surely fall off.

“Captain?” Spock approached out of concern.

“Uhh.” Jim kind of undulated up and gave Spock a rather incomprehensible look.

“You do not look well.”

“Gee, thanks.”

Spock withheld a sigh. “I suggest I escort you to the medbay. Your shift has ended anyway,” he pointed out.

Jim did accompany him to onto the turbolift, but once inside he acted predictably. “I’m not going to the medbay, Spock. I’m fine. Nothing that a long hot water shower won’t fix.”

“You do not look well,” he repeated.

“So you said. I know all of this is very new between us but that’s not the way to win my heart.” He was smiling crookedly. Spock assumed, to indicate he was joking. Humans were fond of joking and Jim in particular.

It was indeed new between them. Two nights ago, after a heated argument, they ended up having rather wild, intense sex. Tonight was to be their first planned date. No doubt why the captain refused to go to the medbay.

The turbolift doors opened onto the deck with their quarters and Jim got out. Spock followed. He followed Jim right into the captain’s quarters.

Jim merely glanced at him and started pulling off his uniform shirts. “I have to get a shower before our date, Spock.”

“Captain, considering you are unwell, I surmise that our date is…off.”

At that, Jim froze and frowned at him. “What? What do you mean off? This is supposed to be like the official start.”

Spock went to him and put his hands on Jim’s arms. “Jim, considering the last two night’s activities we have engaged in, I believe our official start has already come to past.”

“Yes, but…”

“Ashal-veh, my concern is for your welfare and you are not feeling well. I can plainly see.”

Jim deflated before his eyes. “I wanted it to be perfect.”

“Any time spent with you is, as far as I am concerned. If you do not wish to be subjected to the medbay, may I suggest you prepare for bed, get in, and allow me to tend to you. Doctor McCoy can make a ‘house-visit’ as they say.”

Jim blew out a breath. “I do feel kind of crappy. I’m sorry.”

“You owe me no apology. I am sorry that our plans have been postponed. However, I am pleased to be able to spend time with you anyway I can.”

Jim smiled. “You’re almost perfect.”

Spock raised a brow. “Almost?”

“Close to it.” Jim sagged against him. “You win. I’ll get into bed.”

And Jim turned to get into his pajamas, which were little more than shorts and a beat up, stained T-shirt. Once he had done so, Spock stepped forward and helped him get into bed, even fluffing up his pillows.

“You feel warm. Perhaps a fever?”

“Maybe. Are you going to be bored in here with me like this?”

Spock shook his head. “No. I will work on reports and labs. But first the doctor will come to check on you.”

“Do I have to?” Jim asked, jokingly.

“I am afraid so.” Spock brushed his fingers along Jim’s. “I will bring you tea.”

“Thanks. For, you know, everything.”

“Rest, Jim. I will take care of you.”

Always.

Flash Fic, 03/18/2020

Jim woke to the feel of a heavy leg overlapping his. Suddenly he was wide awake and staring at the wall next to his bunk, eyes wide, heart thundering.

Wait. What?

Things had returned to normal after they’d dealt with the whole Babel conference, including dropping off all the ambassadors, Spock’s parents included.

He’d been playing chess and then…

Jim turned on the bed, facing the owner of that leg, who was staring at him with wide dark eyes and messy brown bangs.

“Spock,” he whispered. His gaze went to the string of sucked bruises on Spock’s pale chest.

Spock placed his hand over Jim’s heart. “Jim.”

“What are you going to do?” Bones asked, standing beside him.

Jim stared down at Spock, lying in the biobed, currently aware of…nothing he supposed. He moistened his lips. “Stay by his side and pray for a miracle.”

Bones put his hand on his shoulder. “Scotty’s on the bridge. You’re not needed right now. If that changes, he’ll let you know.”

Jim nodded, swallowed hard. “Thanks, Bones.”

“He’s in the healing trance.”

“I know. I feel him.”

He stepped to the bed and took Spock’s hand. “Come back to me.”

“What are you going to do now?” Nyota asked him as they both watched their unconscious captain breathe as machines all around him beeped and blurped.

“Same as I always do,” Spock replied. “Forgive him, save him, sacrifice for him, advise him, stand up for him and to him, stand by his side no matter what, believe in him, take him in every way that he will allow me, as always.”

She nodded. Squeezed his arm. “We’ll mind the ship. As we always do.”

Spock appreciated it as she moved away and he moved closer to his T’hy’la.

Flash Fic, 03/06/2020

“How long is this going to go on?”

Jim tilted his glass back and took a large swallow of the burning whiskey. “Hmm?”

Uhura sighed and took a drink from her own glass. She flicked her head in the direction of the group across the room. “How many days?”

“How many days what?”

“Captain, you’re so tedious like this. You and Spock not speaking. How many days so far?”

“You’ve got your nose all up in everyone’s business. You probably know.”

She snorted. “Four days.”

He smirked. “See?”

“You know he only spoke up because he is your friend and is concerned for your safety as both your friend and your first officer.”

He finished his drink. “Are you through?”

She sighed again. “Yes.”

“Excellent.” Jim rose from his seat and without looking back at Uhura he went up to the table where Spock sat with a group made up of his science department. “Commander.”

“Captain.”

“Can we talk?”

Spock excused himself and they moved to the side of the room. Jim shifted awkwardly, not looking at him.

“So, uh, listen. I guess maybe I overreacted, so for that, I’m sorry.”

“I accept,” Spock said quickly, “and offer my own apology for stating my point in an abrupt and insensitive way.”

Jim nodded. “Okay. So, if you, I don’t know. Want to play chess—”

“Yes.”

Jim glanced at him. Nodded again. “We could do it in my quarters or—”

“Yes.”

Jim blew out a breath. “Uh. All right. See you there in a few minutes then.”

He left the rec room and headed for his quarters. It felt better to be talking to Spock again, but he couldn’t deny he still felt…stiff and awkward. Kind of like they had just before it all went to shit on Altamid.

He dreaded returning to that non-friendship.

Only a moment later, Spock appeared, requesting entry, so Jim let him in.

“Spock, I think we need to talk more,” Jim said as soon as Spock entered. “Look, I feel that…things are kind of off with us. Maybe that’s why it was so easy for us to get into that big fight, I don’t know. But I really don’t want to return to the way things were with us when you wanted to leave.”

“I did not want to leave. I felt it was my duty to—”

“Yeah, I know. That’s semantics, Spock.”

Spock’s dark eyes darkened, if that were possible. “You wished to leave also.”

He nodded. “I did. And…I just don’t want us to reach that point again. Where we’re barely friends.”

“I do not wish that either.”

“I know I have an issue, Spock, and I am working on it.”

“An issue, Captain?”

Jim exhaled. “I have these feelings surrounding you and I’m…I know they need to go away or at least be controlled.”

“What feelings?”

“Lord, you don’t intend to make this easy, do you? Soft ones. Feelings that go beyond friendship, I guess, and I’ve had them a long time, so I know a whole bunch of this is my fault because of my inability to deal with it, but I don’t want it to be awkward between us because of unwelcome feelings on my part.”

Spock sucked in a breath. “And if they are not?”

“Huh?”

“If your softer feelings are not unwelcome, what then?”

Jim’s jaw dropped open. “Spock, what are you saying?”

Spock stepped close, but his hand on Jim’s face. “I share your softer feelings.”

Jim stopped at the nurse’s desk in the Starfleet hospital outside the area where he’d been told Jaylah had been taken.

“Hi, James Kirk. Here to see Jaylah, Ensign.”

She nodded. “She’s resting comfortably in room 424, Captain.”

Jim went down the hall, shuffling the items in his hands as he did so, until he found the correct room. There was no door on the outside, as often was the case with hospital rooms. He craned his neck around the opening to see if she was awake or had other visitors. He saw no one and Jaylah sitting up.

“James T,” she greeted him instantly as he approached her bed. She smiled. “You came.”

“Of course I did.” He thrust the bouquet of flowers in her general direction, as well as the balloon declaring “Congratulations.”

She tilted her head. “Over there, on the table, please.”

Jim saw there was a vase already on the table filled with flowers as well as a big stuffed bear wearing a blue diaper. He shook his head and added his flowers over there and set his balloon next to her bed.

“Well? Where is the little one?”

“They take him for a walk. He’ll be back in a moment.”

“Who did?”

“Commander Spock and Uhura.”

“Ah.” He nodded. “They beat me here. Last minute meetings are a pain. Bear come from them?”

“Yes.”

He sat on the edge of her bed, but other than a slightly reproachful look, Jaylah let him. “So, what’s next for you? With a baby…”

They both looked toward the door at the commotion, in the form of his first and communication’s officers returning with the baby. Of course Uhura had the little blue wrapped bundle and was cooing nonsensically at him.

“Some linguistic you are,” Jim joked.

“Captain,” Spock exclaimed. “We did not expect you to be free for some hours.”

Jim’s lips twitched. “I charmed my way out early.”

Uhura rolled her eyes at him, but stopped to show him Jaylah’s little bundle of joy. “Beautiful, isn’t he?”

“I’ll say. Give me that baby.” Jim scooped him up into his arms as Spock joined them by the bed.

“Be careful, James T.”

“I know how to handle babies,” Jim insisted.

“When have you held one that young?” Uhura asked.

Jim didn’t answer at first. He let the little boy grab his index finger. Then he said softly, “On Tarsus, when a woman there lost her life shortly after giving birth. I cared for the infant for a time.”

There was a very subdued collective gasp, but Jim didn’t miss it.

“Well, you’re just about the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. Let me give you to your beautiful mama.”

He turned to Jaylah and laid the bundle in her arms.

“Gorgeous. You’re very lucky.”

“Yes.”

Uhura cleared her throat. “What about you, Captain? Think you’ll have one of your own one day?”

He shrugged. “Anything’s possible, Lieutenant. With surrogacy, it’s definitely possible someday.” He yawned. Then he covered his face in embarrassment. “I’m so sorry.”

“You are exhausted,” Spock said, quietly. He looked to Uhura. “Nyota, I am taking him home to rest. Would you like to stay a little longer?”

“Sure. I can get back to my place on my own.”

Spock grabbed his arm.

“I’ll be by tomorrow,” Jim called out as he was shuffled out of the room. “I could have stayed,” he grumbled, even as he sagged against Spock.

“As you say, we will come tomorrow.” Spock paused. “Well?”

Jim sighed. “Yeah, I got it. The promotion.”

“So you are…”

“Fucked.”

“Jim—”

“Admiral Kirk, yeah. Can we stop and get fries on the way home?”

“Yes.”

“And a burger.”

“Yes.”

“And cookies.”

Jim smiled, leaned over and kissed Spock on the cheek. “Thanks, honey.”

Flash Fic 02/26/2020

Jim slammed on the brakes of the car he was using to speed down the road away from the farmhouse, away from his life there. He really had no idea where he was going, other than away from Frank, away from the dickhead who’d made Sam leave.

The farmhouse had been theirs, his mom’s and dad’s, not that asshole, yet his words still rang in Jim’s ears as he had continued to drive.

“You live in my house.”

Bullshit, it wasn’t Frank’s house. Or it hadn’t used to be. But his mother was off planet again and Frank was back and in charge.

He’d sped right past Sam as he’d hitchhiked away. Sam looked shocked and Jim hadn’t blamed him.

Then the cop had pulled his vehicle right in front of Jim as he was about to head down a dirt  path that led to the cliff and the crater.

Now smoke was coming from his brakes and tires. Jim winced as the cop approached him.

“Citizen.”

Jim opened his mouth to say his name when the cop reached up and removed his helmet to reveal a Vulcan.

His Vulcan.

Well…the mysterious one he had seen twice before.

“Uh. Hey.”

“Jim. What are you doing?”

He scowled now. “Driving this old car. And that…you said he was gone. Frank. But you lied.”

“It was not intended to be a lie,” the Vulcan said. “He had been taken to jail. I didn’t know that he would reunite with your mother.”

Jim felt his bottom lip tremble, so he looked away. “He talks a good game when he wants to. He charmed her into thinking he’d changed.”

“I see. Jim, you must turn this car around and go back.”

“What? Why? I don’t want to go back.”’

“Driving your stepfather’s car over a cliff is not the answer.”

He looked at the Vulcan. “Well I…”

“Jim. I will take care of Frank.”

“You-you said that before. And he came back. He hurt me again.”

“I know. But never ever again.”

“And I’m just supposed to listen to you. I don’t even know your name. Who are you?”

“I cannot say. But I am from the…future.”

“The future?”

“Yes. Your future. Turn around, Jim, and go back. Please.”

Jim slammed his hand down on the steering wheel. “Fine.”

He turned the car around and drove back to the farmhouse. To his surprise, Sam had returned. He stood in the yard with his backpack.

Jim stopped the car and got out, looking at Sam in question. “Where’s Frank?”

Sam shook his head. “I don’t know. He’s not here.”

Jim bit his lip. “How come you’re back?”

Sam shrugged. “There was this Vulcan…”

Flash Fic, 02/21/2020

This one may have you out with pitchforks! LOL

Spock stood to the side, well away from his captain who was leaning in close to speak with Lieutenant Carol Marcus. He was not part of the conversation, and though he could have likely heard if he strained to do so, Spock chose not to eavesdrop.

Marcus appeared to be upset, though she was not crying. After a moment, she shook her head, briefly put her hand on the captain’s arm, then turned and fled in the opposite direction.

Spock had been surprised to see her. She had abruptly aborted her intention to be on the Enterprise after just a few short weeks. There had been rumors, plenty of them, that she had engaged in an ill-fated romance with Captain Kirk. Spock paid little heed to rumors, whether they were true or false.

He hadn’t expected to see her again, so had been surprised when she appeared on Yorktown during their leave to repair, rebuild more accurately, the Enterprise. He was aware that she had monopolized much of their captain’s time since then.

“Uh oh. That didn’t look good.”

He glanced at Nyota who stood next to him.

“You should go see if he’s okay.”

“He appears to be fine, Nyota.”

She sighed. “Spock, that looked intense. Has he told you? Was she intending to get back together with him?”

Spock bristled at this. “He has not said so. It would be illogical for her to believe that she can…”

“Spock. Go and talk to him.”

“But you and I were on our way for tea.”

She rolled her eyes. “With him. Before she stopped him. I can still meet you guys there.” She squeezed his arm. “It’s your duty.”

“As first officer?”

“No. His boyfriend.” She pushed him toward the captain, who still stood there, stiffly, his back to them.

Spock exhaled and approached. “Captain, are you well?”

Jim looked at him, eyes so tumultuous they looked nearly black in his face. “We have a son.”

It was not the first time Spock had heard Jim cry out. Generally he was tempted to check on him, but he had never done so since he had not wished to invade his captain’s privacy.

At the moment, they were on a temporary ship, presented to Jim basically to get rid of him because he was driving everyone crazy on Yorktown constantly asking for updates on the Enterprise. It was still far enough out for completion that they decided to send Kirk out before he got too antsy.

The new ship, the Enterprise that was, would no longer have these shared bathrooms between the captain and his first. Spock had seen the layout and each had a large bathroom of their own. The captain had expressed delight over this. As well as the overall expanded quarters.

This temporary ship did not have that, though, and he shared a bathroom still with Kirk.

And there was a particular element to this cry that alarmed Spock to the point that he could not block it out. So, he crossed through their shared bathroom and into the captain’s quarters, uninvited.

Jim, who had obviously been in bed, was now up and pacing the sleeping area of the quarters. He wore only pajama bottoms, no shirt. His hair stood on end and the color of his face was nearly as white as the sheets on the bed.

“Spock?”

“I apologize for the intrusion, Captain, but you did sound distressed and I was quite concerned.”

He stopped his pacing to wrap his arms around himself. “No, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to bother you.”

“You did not.” Spock hesitated. “At least not in annoying fashion. I am disturbed only out of concern.”

Jim exhaled and gave Spock a very slight smile. “A really bad dream. Really bad.”

Spock knew that his captain was plagued by such things. He didn’t know how often.

“I tell myself it wasn’t real. But…”

“Would you care to talk about it?”

“Not really, no. It just…it was related to my time on…Tarsus.”

Spock stilled. He recalled that Jim had mentioned he’d been on Tarsus very very briefly when Spock had noticed his reaction to the name Kodos. Jim would not elaborate then. Nor apparently now.

“I grieve with thee.”

Jim ran a hand over his hair. “Thanks. Uh. Yeah.”

“Would you like to go back to bed? Perhaps I can assist you in sleeping?”

“No. No. Not at the moment. Was thinking about…eating.”

The soft, almost strangled way he said it made Spock’s heart squeeze in his side. His gaze went to a display of Valentine Cards on Jim’s desk. He’d forgotten what day it was. There were boxes of chocolates and cookies too.

Spock arched his brow.

Predictably, Jim noticed. He laughed. “Gifts from the crew.”

“Attempting to win your romantic favor?”

“Nah. I don’t think so. Just being nice, I guess.”

Spock stepped over to the gifts. One appeared to be a chocolate cheesecake. “Do you desire to eat some of this?”

Jim walked over. “Probably should since they went to all that trouble.”

“Have they been scanned?”

Jim gave him a wry smile. “You think my crew wants to poison me?”

“For known allergens to your person,” Spock said dryly.

“Oh.” Jim laughed. “No. Not for that. I’m sure it’s fine though.”

Spock was not. “I will scan them.”

“I really need a cup of coffee,” Jim said, moving off to the replicator. “You don’t really need to bother with that, Spock. In fact, why are you even here? Shouldn’t you be with Uhura?”

Pausing in the middle of scanning Jim’s gifts with a tricorder, Spock glanced at him. “Why would I be with Nyota?”

“Because it’s Valentine’s Day, Spock. Some lovers think that’s an important day.”

“Captain, Nyota and I ended our relationship before the events on Altamid.”

“Yeah. But, um, after you were injured and she was rescued, thanks to that necklace, I thought…you two seemed pretty cozy. Bones said you two were together at my party just last month.”

Spock put down his scanner. Shook his head. “Nyota and I remain on good terms as friends, but we have not reunited.”

“No?”

“There is no point to maintaining a relationship with someone when they love someone else.”

“Oh.” Jim nodded. He turned to get his coffee and then with it cradled in his hands, took a sip. “Who does she love then?”

Spock glanced down at all the Valentines on Jim’s desk. The cookies, the candy, the cheesecake, flowers. He wondered how one person could be that blind. But then he knew that Jim didn’t always have the love he should have. Spock hoped he was about to change that.

“I do not know,” Spock replied. “I do not wish to spend Valentine’s Day with her because I would rather spend it with who I am in love with.”

Jim took another sip of his coffee, oblivious to the last. “Yeah? Then why are you in here with me?”

Spock sighed. “I am spending it with the one I am in love with.”

Jim blinked. “Wait. What? What are you saying?”

“I love you.”

Jim set his coffee down and rushed at Spock. He grabbed Spock’s arms, his blue eyes wide with wonder. “Spock…”

“Jim. Be mine?”
